Seinfeld: the main characters were pretty promiscuous for straight people
I've been watching re-runs lately, and it struck me this time through how slutty they are. They each have a new partner practically every episode, and they're always clearly fucking them.
Are single heterosexuals in their 30s really so slutty?
Of course they are.
There's this strange notion amongst some very prissy Dataloungers that only gay men have slutty sex with multiple partners. The truth is that straight people are just as slutty.
"They each have a new partner practically every episode, and they're always clearly fucking them."
That's clearly an exaggeration.
They are as slutty BUT they are nowhere near as fugly as the Seinfeld crew was. Maybe they could pick up some homeless women hooked on crack but George,Kramer and Jerry couldn't get laid EVEN if they paid for it.....
As for Elaine, she didn't need a face lift but rather a face trade! Her body was that of a dumpy hausfrau who just had her fourth spawn.
Are single heterosexuals in their 30s really so slutty?
Not that there's anything wrong with that.
All the characters in Seinfeld were sociopaths, OP, and sociopaths are VERY promiscuous.
Young str8 professionals in NYC fuck like rabbits. Changes in culture (post-feminism, greater awareness of sexual hygiene, even "Sex and the City") have given young str8 women complete sexual license. They fuck like porn stars without apology.
I am a HUGE Seinfeld fan, and still regularly watch the reruns. One exchange which I have always found odd was when the characters were considering getting circumcisions:
Kramer (to Jerry): "What if I told you I never impregnated a woman?"
Jerry: "Really? Never slipped one past the goalie?"
When I first saw the original episode in prime time, I assumed that exchange would end up being controversial, because it would mean that either: Kramer has a child (or children) he has no contact with and his friends don't know about; or, past girlfriends or one-night stands have had abortions.
It was also odd because Jerry expresses surprise that Kramer doesn't have children that he (Jerry) has never heard of. Finally, it kind of implies that Jerry himself HAS gotten a woman pregnant.
Well, there was no mention of it anywhere so I guess no one else thought it was odd, but I sure did.
That woman Elaine was a tramp. The second that skank took a swig out of my bottle of water I dumped it in the trash.
What I meant to say was only [italic]poor, failed[/italic] straight people are promiscuous. All the successful ones who I know and am friends with prefer to be in a monogamous relationship or are already married by that time. Mid-twenties are when straights try to get married.
R18 admitting you're a horrible person is not something sociopaths do.
Most straight people are their sluttiest in college but its still usually only a handful of partners; never into the hundreds or thousands like hollywood portrays. Even known sluts like Taylor Swift and Kim Kardashian are probably still in single digits. Far fewer than the average DLer.
Please. You see what Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David look like. There is no way in hell they would get all of those good-looking girls Jerry was dating unless they were millionaires. And on the show, they weren't millionaires. Same with George Costanza. A guy who looks like Jason Alexander who was not on a tv show would never get all those women in real life.
And the Julia Louis Dreyfus character was supposed to represent Carol Leiffer who was never married and didn't even discover she was a lesbian until she was about 50 years old.
So no, it was not realistic. The ability to bring in lots of different characters to prevent us from being bored to death by the three main characters is why they were always introducing new BFs and GFs.
And the Julia Louis Dreyfus character was supposed to represent Carol Leiffer
Only in small part. Both Jerry Seinfeld and Carol Leifer (not "Leiffer") have admitted that Elaine was based on many women and only has a small part of Leifer in her character. Elaine was based on many other women including Elayne Boosler (from whom she gets the first name) and Monica Yates (Larry David's former girlfriend, whose father was the famous novelist Richard Yates and who provided inspiration for the episode "The Jacket."
I was single in NYC at the time Seinfeld aired, with tons of single heterosexual friends and no, they didn't have all those sex partners. The women were all looking to get married and eventually have kids.
Funny, one thing I notice about young people today is how they get married and immediately spawn. The women know they do not have the luxury of waiting until their late 30s or 40s to get pregnant. They learned from their infertile aunts that procreation is very difficult (and more expensive) as a woman ages. So now I see a lot of women in their 20s with a couple of kids. Some of them look like teenagers to me and I wonder, "How the fuck do they afford to live in Manhattan with a couple of kids?" The two bedroom apartments in my buildings go for $4500-5500, yet I see tons on teen-looking women pushing strollers and hanging into a toddler in the neighborhood.
When Seinfeld came on at 9 pm Thursday night, I used to do my laundry while taping the show on my VCR. It was the only time that my laundry room was completely empty because everyone in Manhattan was watching Seinfeld.
I would so do George; cute as a button. Jerry looked like he had a nice package down there, but the face... (perhaps through a glory hole?). Kramer looks like he has ugly-guy sizemeat. Again, paper bag...
It was a SHOW, for ACTORS and JOBS. So there was a core cast and there was a serial cast.
And Jerry did all right with getting Shoshanna; no so much with the gold-digger.
"All the successful ones who I know and am friends with prefer to be in a monogamous relationship"
Well, smell HER.
Did you know that Julia Louis Dreyfus is worth almost 3 BILLION dollars?
She is also one of the most nominated women in Emmy history.
"Elaine" was originally "Eileen." JLD was more surprised that her character was allowed to talk about "her period" than about sex.
In real life, Jerry dated a very pretty lingerie model for years before Teen Shoshanna.
Jason's son, Gabe, is a cutie.
I have nothing on Michael Richard whom I don't like.
"Did you know that Julia Louis Dreyfus is worth almost 3 BILLION dollars?"
Yes, many know JLD is a descent of the Dreyfus Fund family. She was wealthy before fame.
JLD is very beautiful, so I never found it odd that Elaine could be with a lot of guys.
The three men on the other hand...
Most str8 women don't necessarily put looks on the top of their priority lists, especially when looking for a husband, especially in this messed up economy.
Security comes first and a great place to live is tied in with that, that points to hooking a wealthy man.
Despite so many women working and many women getting advanced degrees and then having actual careers, many of them seem to get pregnant immediately after marrying, then leave the workforce permanently. A man with a great career is the main priority for this type of woman.
A relative's attractive wife was a lawyer, about a year into the marriage, she quit her job and started pumping out babies. My relative owns a lucrative business, the wife is all set.
The relative's looks? He's repulsive looking, he reminds me of Chris Christie. Money changes everything, you need look no further than all those trollish Hollywood producers and their gorgeous much younger trophy wives.
Of course there are straight sluts in their 30's around but probably not the majority.. The problem with most people though is that they're average looking with average income and therefore could never attract the large variety of attractive people willing to have sex with them like the Seinfeld gang did. That's why it's a fictional comedy.
Sex is not the driving force for a lot of women like it is with men. Consider the facts that only 25% of women have an orgasm every time during sex with a partner and a large majority of about 75% can't climax from intercourse alone and about 10% have never had one in their life. Women have different priorities so straight men just have a lot less willing partners than gay men.
You'll be surprised at how many people marry their high school sweethearts. Hets don't take cheating very lightly. I wouldn't be surprised if a babe like Drew Brees, with his traditional values, has slept with only his wife.
Yes, many know JLD is a descent of the Dreyfus Fund family. She was wealthy before fame.
Well then many people "know" an incorrect "fact". JLD is not at all connected to Dreyfus Funds.
R9's analytical skills are right up there with the koala bear.
Dear, the exchange (in an episode and scene I know well) was just as you saw it, with nothing inferable along that chase of the wild geese you engaged in for your post.
Be clear now:
Kramer was saying he never got a woman pregnant.
They had not discussed this subject before.
Jerry, with the humorous detachment he always showed in his conversations with the impossible Kramer, simply asked about "slipping one past the goalie" to be funny, in a question to verify Kramer's statement.
Nothing in the scene or in any episode of Seinfeld provided an indication that Jerry, Kramer, Costanza, or Elaine was ever involved in a preganancy situation, regardless of the outcome.
The had sex. They made only a glancing reference to contraception. (A sponge being the most well-developed, and a couple condoms thrown in). This was not because the show was against contraception - it simply wanted to maintain as much humor in every situation as possible, and so yielded to farce in matters of sex.
Finally, you know it was a comedy, don't you? And that sometimes the plots purposely exaggerated not only the story lines' plausibility but presented some situations that never appeared again, because they were for the acute laugh, not the long-term character development and story arc?
Her wealth comes from the Louis Dreyfus Group, a commodities and shipping multinational, founded in the 1800's, which members of the family control to this day.
Most str8 women don't necessarily put looks on the top of their priority lists, especially when looking for a husband, especially in this messed up economy
Seinfeld took place in the 90s, when the economy was good.
A man with a great career is the main priority for this type of woman.
Jerry worked sporadically as a standup comic; George worked sporadically at all kinds of crap jobs; Kramer didn't work.
They made only a glancing reference to contraception. (A sponge being the most well-developed, and a couple condoms thrown in).
And the time Elaine's diaphragm fell out of her purse. And the time all the guys wanted to get vasectomies.
"In real life" I don't think Jerry and George would have been friends.
Jerry worked sporadically as a standup comic; George worked sporadically at all kinds of crap jobs; Kramer didn't work.
And yet, they all lived on their own in apartments far larger than most New Yorkers could dream of. In fact, the only person who had a share was Elaine, the one person who had a steady job.
Sluts R Us
Thanks for that info, R38. Like others I had always thought her wealth was from the Dreyfus funds.
One of Howard Stern's last land-based radio interviews (before he went to Sirius) was with JLD. A classic HS interview, he was constantly goading JLD about her wealth, what was her net worth, did Brad marry her only for her money, did she hate Jerry for not giving her a cut of the syndication rights, etc, etc, all in his inimitable style.
"Jerry" was well-known enough to book an interview on The Charles Grodin Show and was also famous enough to be the celebrity spokesperson for Elaine's Clothe the Homeless charity event. The character wasn't exactly struggling for money.
And he also bought me a fully loaded Cadillac complete with the Northstar system. Twice.
Morty Seinfeld, still wondering what the hell the Northstar system is.
