I do agree with you OP. A sociopath is a real condition with real meaning, it is overly and misused here to mean anyone that the poster doesn't like.
Thank you OP. I have actually been thinking about creating a thread just like this. It seems everyday someone here creates a thread saying so and so is a sociopath, when in fact, the examples they give of such behavior does not match what is the true the clinical definition. Of course should you point this out, you stand a chance of being labeled a sociopath.
The following questionnaire is based on research and experiences of socialised sociopaths. For each trait, decide if it applies to the person you suspect may be a socialised sociopath, fully (2 points), partially (1 point) or not at all (0 points).
1) Do they have problems sustaining stable relationships, personally and in business?
2) Do they frequently manipulate others to achieve selfish goals, with no consideration of the effects on those manipulated?
3) Are they cavalier about the truth, and capable of telling lies to your face?
4) Do they have an air of self-importance, regardless of their true standing in society?
5) Have they no apparent sense of remorse, shame or guilt?
6) Is their charm superficial, and capable of being switched on to suit immediate ends?
7) Are they easily bored and demand constant stimulation?
8) Are their displays of human emotion unconvincing?
9) Do they enjoy taking risks, and acting on reckless impulse?
10) Are they quick to blame others for their mistakes?
11) As teenagers, did they resent authority, play truant and/or steal?
12) Do they have no qualms about sponging off others?
13) Are they quick to lose their temper?
14) Are they sexually promiscuous?
15) Do they have a belligerent, bullying manner?
16) Are they unrealistic about their long-term aims?
17) Do they lack any ability to empathise with others?
18) Would you regard them as essentially irresponsible?
A score of 25 or above suggests strong psychopathic tendencies. This does not mean the person is a potential mass-murderer: socialised psychopaths are not mad, nor do they have to resort to violence. Even so, a close professional or emotional relationship with a socialised psychopath is likely to prove a damaging experience.y
There is something called secondary sociopathy, which means the person has been conditioned in one way or another to become one.
Not to mention, our society is getting more and more sociopathic. Human beings are reduced to commodity.
Profit trumps people in every sector of our society. We have sociopathic value system where it's not who you are, but how much money you make, what car you drive, and the status you possess.
I grew up with a sibling who was believed to be one, and R3's list is pretty accurate. The gold standard this may be derived from is Robert Hare's Psychopathy Checklist. Hare and some other experts use psychopath and sociopath interchangeably, although others think psychopathy is hard-wired and sociopathy more a free will choice.
My late brother spent considerable time and energy on harming others, overtly and covertly. We don't miss him.
r5, what did your parents think of him? How did he die?
Really personal questions
After coming across one in my younger years, I became obsessed with reading about sociopaths. For many of us who have been damaged by one, it is hard to shake the impact. Maybe I have spent too much time reflecting outward (learning about psychopathy) and my time would be better spent dealing with the damage.
Any suggestions about how to deal with the damage - either from R7 or anyone with thoughts on the matter?
I do know what it means, Eva Braun.
I am heartily sick of the "_______ is a Sociopath" Troll.
The family dynamic also involved a narcissistic and paranoid father and co-dependent mother. So they protected...and didn't register as evil...a child who killed and harmed animals, started fires, and terrorized (and worse) his siblings and others who were on to him.
Ours was a middle to upper income family, respected in the community. So no act was too heinous, including playing chicken in (and totaling) pop's new car, being caught with drugs and in a breaking & entering (pop paid his legal bills), my reports that he tried to drown me in a lake, and that he was beating fuck out of me. Really awful denial of the meaning of all this stuff. And there's much more I can't go into in a public forum.
As an adult, my brother was caught stealing a lot of money from our elderly mother. He was dealing with that and my recollections of sibling abuse in court. He killed himself at a friend's house, in a way that caused the friend considerable pain (of course.)
Side note: his memorial service was held in a small public room at mom's nursing home. Over 50 of his friends came, mostly uninvited. Some of them were drunk, noisy, wanted to burn incense, etc. and had to be removed. Weirdly, he had compartmentalized his life to such an extent that many of them were strangers to us, and to each other.
"...although others think psychopathy is hard-wired and sociopathy more a free will choice."
That's interesting. I had heard that psychopathy was simply the openly violent variant of sociopathy.
I'm another person who is sick of the "so and so is a sociopath" troll. She strikes me as someone who has no education, heard the term on "Dr. Phil" or somewhere equally pedestrian, and uses "sociopath" as an insult to anyone whose opinions she doesn't like.
For people who have dealt with real sociopaths, it's not a term to toss around lightly.
Now if only we had similar threads for vagina, fetish, and pedophile.
I know exactly what it means. And it involves those evil fucking bi polars who don't take their meds. Those selfish fucking dangerous cunts. Put a fucking monitor on them and if they don't take their meds, shoot them in the fucking head on the spot.
*backs slowly away, motions orderlies to bring the straightjacket*
R16 has never dealt with a bi polar fag off their meds. Trust me, it is horrifying if you are in their crosshairs. They should be forced to report to a med window daily, by law. They LOVE to skip their meds and wreak havoc. It is part of their pathology.

Are you kidding me? Of course I do: I post here regularly.
