Anyone else here have this nasty upper respiratory bug that's going around?
My sister, a nurse, said that there's a very strong bug making the rounds. I've been sick as a dog since Thursday night. I tend to develop a secondary bacterial bronchial infection when I get a cold, so am on pre-emptive antibiotics. I started a new job last week, where just about everyone was sick, so I know I picked it up there. Anyone else here living this hell at the moment?
YES! I've had it for almost a week and a half. It's ridiculous. Antibiotics didn't do dick for me.
Or it's sweeping my area. We're calling it Captain Trips. Don't dear the Reaper.
Where are you located OP & R2?
NYC. Get better everyone.
Future posters on this one, always please state your state and even your town if possible.
Yeah, my family has it. WTF? I think I have the stomach bug version.
How dumb. Something is always going around.
Yeah, I'm in the tri-state area as well. I'm surprised it hasn't been reported in the news yet.
NYC petri, dish
Portland, OR. I woke up with a 101 degree fever last Monday (my birthday) in a tent in the Redwoods in Northern Calif. I had an 8 hour drive home and I lost my wallet on the way so I had to call around and cancel credit cards then get up the next morning and deal with my driver's license and mass transit pass.
I had the fever and major aches for about 3 days, then just really fatigued. Today is the first day I've started to feel like being up and around.
My lungs have felt tight, but it never turned into a respiratory problem.
Yes, I got extremely ill at a wedding and have struggled with kicking it completely. A steroid shot helped tremendously but now I have a recurrent throat thing.
Originally contracted it in NYC, realized how sick I was in Hilton Head, SC, and now in Birmingham, AL. I actually had to go home and let my parents take care of me for the first time in decades, I was so weak for a day or two.
BTW, I originally got it two weeks ago.
I'm nauseous and have bad gas and dizziness and lots of coughing. I used my partner's asthma inhalers.
Bunch of malingerers … walk it off!
Good heavens! Bad gas and lots of coughing. That must be dreadful!
The shit lingers too. I have had the residual dry cough and sore throat for almost a month now. Whenever I jog in the mornings my chest starts burning. Its like something is in there and I just can't cough it up.
I'm in NYC and have been dealing with it for over two weeks now. I had chalked it up to a particularly bad hay fever season. I don't normally suffer from allergies. I ended up with a sinus infection, laryngitis and can't stop coughing.
Well, for once, I'm not alone. I'm in Philly. It began last Sat as a bad sort of allergy attack but by Sun night turned into an orgy of endless horrible coughing, sore throat, aches and exhaustion. DR has me on "pre-emptive" antibiotics. But they don't make one feel better. Nothing does.
I developed something on Monday night .... it has now pretty much passed except for that damn hacking cough/chest congestion. It was mostly a runny nose/congestion to begin with. Now just that lingering cough. Thank goodness I already have next week scheduled off so I can just chill out and recoup. I will say I've also been sleeping a lot too, so there must be some exhaustion tied in too.
Fuck, I literally just had a coughing fit before I scrolled down and saw this thread.
Still, not as bad as the time i decided to watch Contagion earlier this year when I had the worst virus (im pretty sure it was a really nasty norovirus) i've ever had in my life and was bed-ridden for days.
Not the greatest idea, let me tell you.
Now this has me worried, I don't have much sick time left this year.
Thanks for the heads-up OP.
Are any of you guys smokers of cigs or pot?
>>Its like something is in there and I just can't cough it up.
Chicago - had it twice. Once in December and once about a month ago. Still hacking up phlegm!
These superbugs suck. Antibiotics don't help at all.
Is that what you're calling HIV now?
Yeah, I smoke cigs and pot, but abstaining didn't do anything to shorten the duration.
I'm in Seattle and have something similar to your experience. Symptoms started suddenly yesterday, like an ON switch was thrown! Nasal congestion and scratchy throat. Lots of general aching and malaise, and I've rarely felt this wiped out. No coughing though.
Good luck, r30. It will be a week tomorrow since I got sick. I feel a lot better, but I am still low on energy.
It's the new AIDS
Came down with it on Wed.. and have been sleeping most of my weekend. It's congestion and aches that won't leave. Luckily it hasn't traveled to my chest yet. Feel better everyone!
Fukashima syndrome. Get off those meats
I've been feeling low energy for the past three days but the dizziness came yesterday, and nausea came very early this morning. I've been sneezing, blowing my nose a lot, and the pressure and dizziness are still with me.
No coughing but lots of drainage. Bloated feeling too. It's funny. I feel like I can barely hold my head up, but if I lie down I can't sleep. Generally feeling like I'm on the verge of coming down with something awful like a flu, since Thursday night.
I hope none of you guys have meningitis.
I think with meningitis the symptoms come on strong very quickly and then you, uh, die. So it wouldn't be a two week long illness.
R5, how...idk, Mary!
Did anyone come down with this shortly after hooking up with someone?
This is my second go-round with this fucking plague. It became a sinus infection, pretended to go away, then came back six weeks later.
I'm on antibiotics but they don't seem to be doing much. My quack put me on something called (I think) "Augmentin" but it gave me violent vomiting. That's the first time in my life that I've had a bad reaction to a drug. Now I'm just taking plain old Amoxicillin.
The exhaustion has passed but the amount of crap I'm coughing up and blowing out of my nose is disgusting.
I have had fucked up sinuses for a couple of weeks. Antibiotics fixed it, but a couple of days later and it's back again. Ugh, bored with it now. My eyes feel like raisins, my limbs feel like lead, and my sinuses feel like they are being cauterised.
Yup! Portland, OR here. Have had the hacking cough for the last three weeks now. Had to suck it up and keep working. Thanks to all the sick employee's at my work, we just keep recycling it and passing it back around. Good luck if you get this, hard to get rid of the plebbies.
Eeek! Stay away!
2weeks and holding here in American Samoa. Miserable bug. Sore throat won't go away.
It's hit here in Censornazi as well. Several people at work have had it - constant hacking cough, wheezing, aches, fever. Almost like the flu but the lingering cough and chest wheezing is more like a lung infection.
Sounds fucking awful and I avoid those people like the plague. Also eat a lot of garlic. Not only will it keep everyone away, but it is supposed to help fight infections.
I haven't been ill but the last three days I've taken unscheduled noontime naps and I've felt exhausted much of the day. I hope that's not an early warning.
Did any of you sick people get a flu shot last Autumn?
Any chance this dread disease will reach Luxembourg?
[quote]Did any of you sick people get a flu shot last Autumn?
Yes, I did. I wonder if that's why my chest felt tight but never turned into an infection. I just had the high fever, major aches and fatigue.
Tomorrow will be day 7 and I still don't have my energy back.
And on top of that I may have scabies, and not through something acceptable like raunchy sex, but through going to a dirty laundromat.
I didn't have the flu shot and I got the upper respiratory thing.
Are any of you non smokers?
R49, the flu shot targets several viruses & may have defended you against some (while not all) of the ones that comprise the "bug" you caught -- thus reducing the severity of your total symptoms.
And note that the flu shot typically lasts only 6 months. So if someone got a shot in Oct, it wore off during April & the patient then became susceptible to catching this new thing.
Drink lots of fluids, preferably citrus juices for the Vitamin C. You've pretty much just got to sleep it off, but it's very important to stay hydrated (& fruit juice has sugar that's easily absorbed to give you a little energy).
Stay out of Freedonia!
Most people are non-smokers, R52. This goddamned plague doesn't give a fuck.
I think getting my flu shot early may have screwed me, regardless of the fact that I don't smoke.
Would any of you like to put me in your last Will and Testament if I say a prayer for you tonight? A prayer for you to die, of course.
Got a case of it here in DC. About 11 days so far...had flu shot nonsmoker. Lung congestion coughing up crap.
DC resident too and this is day 5 with this.. went into work and boss sent me home 10 minutes later. I don't have anymore leave nor vacation, but they don't want me at work either :/ Just had this shit in February turned into full fledge pneumonia.
I was laughing at you and damn if I didn't wake up with a nasty sore throat, covered with red and white blotches, my chest hurts and pretty sure I'm sitting here with a fever.. The worst part is after my shower I see a ringworm on my leg! A ringworm! Am I five? What do people do about them nowadays? Who cursed me for my Ackles Padalecki posts?
r59, holy crap. How did you even know what a ring worm looked like?
How are you feeling, are you still alive?
Today, day 7, was the first day I had my energy back. I didn't have the nasty chest stuff though, just the fever and aches for 3 days.
I don't have that, but I do have a drippy burning from my penis when I urinate.
I think our friend visiting from Australia may be responsible for the
bug. He flew over seated near someone sick as a devil flying in from china. He infected all of our group, then, being young, and interested in sightseeing and partying, despite being too sick too really be doing it, we continued going out.
Does anyone have a lingering flemmy, breathing issue?. Havn't been to the doctor yet, but my breathing has a roughness to it...does that sound like a bronchial infection?
Did the illness cause severe bodily aching and relatively high fevers? Mine got up to 102 - 103.
Very high for an adult; any higher I'd have gone to the hospital.
I'm based in NYC, upper east side, and brooklyn which is why I wonder if our group might be ground zero, so to speak...
I got achy for a few days and thought I was over it. Then on Saturday BAM- the worst day. My skin and muscles were so sore I felt like I'd been run over by a car. Little did I know my lungs were filling up with crud. So as the fever subsided, I started hacking up globs of brown snot from my chest.
I was so pissed and frustrated because I wanted to put in my garden but I felt too wasted- like I'd been poisoned.
A week later I still have the urge to cough and get this shit out.
Got my partner last week and me today. There is an arsenal of medication in the house - antibiotics, inhalers, cough syrup. Feel like hell...
OP here. Went through the worst of it Sunday and Monday. Finally, today, day 4 on the antibiotic levaquin, I'm starting to feel better. Still hacking, but now more of a residual dry cough than productive, and don't feel as mucusy. The choking up phlegm was the worst. I'm chalking it up to really bad, stupidly untreated allergies that advanced to a sinus infection. Although I suppose it could be a mild case of the flu. I got the shot early last fall too, so the effect has probably worn off by now. Just glad it seems like it's finally passing. Hope everyone else gets better soon.
There's an NYC nurse going around and posting to conspiracy boards that there's an active cover up by NYC authorities going on right now and that it's SARS. Go to Lunatic Outpost, you'll see the thread on the front page.
[quote]Does anyone have a lingering flemmy, breathing issue?
Is "flemmy" the femme version of the butch "phlegm"?
Two of the junior officers at the military base where I work have it. One went home yesterday.
These things always begin on page 7 of the newspaper.
Then before you know it, it's in the streets of your town, it's right outside your house.
My husband said he didn't feel good yesterday. He felt he was coming down with a sore throat. Today he is coughing and he went to his doctor who told him it is pollen and recommended he gargle with salt water for the sore throat and then go take a bracing walk on the beach.
It's not very warm here and windy.
Gargling with salt water helped me tremendously as far as making the throat less raw. The sinus symptoms have come and gone for a month, but they're much improved compared to the initial acute illness, which practically floored me.
I've had some kind of nasty lung bug for the last 6 weeks. My doctor has has me on 4 differant antibiotics so far. They seem to work a bit after the first two days taking them but then 4-5 days later I'm back to feeling like I'm breathing thru a straw and coughing so hard I've thrown up. He takes x-rays every time I go in, so he's sure it's not pneumonia. I just wish he could find the right drug or my body would fight this thing off. So tired of being sick.
The UK Daily Mail has a story now of two deaths and five hospitalizations for this "mystery respiratory illness" in Alabama.
Two people have died and five others have been hospitalized by a mysterious respiratory illness in southeast Alabama, state health officials said on Tuesday.
All seven adults had been admitted to hospitals with symptoms including fever, cough and shortness of breath in recent weeks, said Alabama Department of Public Health spokeswoman Mary McIntyre.
Get ready for SARS II.

Interesting, but we're talking about first world areas.
R65, did your doctor and or pharmacist warn you that fluoroquinolone antibiotics cause spontaenously rupturing tendons, full body tendinosis, neuropathy, vision and other sensory disturbances, insomnia, hypersomnia, disassociation, anxiety, psychosis, rashes, hair loss, food intolerances, exploding blood vessels, muscle weakness, wasting, spasms and pain, liver and kidney disease, etc.? Look up Fluoroquinolone Toxcity. These reactions can occur from as little as one pill, appear up to a year after taking the FQ and are, for the most part, irreversible. Never take a fluoroquinolone unless it's an actual matter of life and death.
