That's what I heard. It went downhill when I left some years ago. Detroit is built around car manufacturing and the cars that they produced couldn't sell because they were so defective. Then all the major American car companies went bankrupt and people have been leaving Detroit in droves since. Discuss.
OP, you win the Timely Award on DL.
Looking forward to your post on the Titanic.
OMG. Did you hear the Challenger just exploded?
So it's all your fault OP. Where did you move to, if we may be so bold, so we can know where all the light and warmth in the universe has migrated?
OP, have you heard that more people now live in California than in Michigan?!
There's even talk that a baseball team might move there!! Major leagues in the sun!!
Tell us, OP, how are you enjoying your AOL account?
The cars were never that defective.
[quote] The cars were never that defective.
No, but Detroit did get lazy for a few years in R&D and they were selling dull, not especially outstanding cars for a high price.
The Japanese cars kicked their ass and it took a good 20 years for them to start to make progress catching up and regaining market.
They weren't trying to regain market R7. They were trying to make money, and that they did.
No year in the 1970s or 1980s did GM lose money.
This is what happens when a city relies on only one form of industry
Indeed, from the 1950s GM tried to hold down its market share to prevent antitrust actions.
They only started chasing share again in the 90s, and that's when they started losing money for the first time in their history.
[quote] This is what happens when a city relies on only one form of industry
Which can be said for almost every large city in the Rust Belt. Some are coming out of the fog - Pittsburgh fell earlier, but it learned to diversify and is on a positive upswing. Buffalo and Cleveland, to name two others, are still struggling.
Detroit is overrun by packs of niggers roaming the streets
Elaine Stritch plans to run for mayor in order to save the city.
I have been thru Detroit several times in the last 10 years, even though I don't live near. Each year it just keeps getting worse. I don't how the place can even exist financially at this point.
Can't Aretha do something to revive the city center? Doesn't she have enough spare cash lying around?
Detroit had the highest median income and rate of home ownership in the country - in 1950. In fact, the city was so wealthy that it began a freeway construction program ahead of the Interstate Highway Act, which heavily subsidized roadway building with federal funds.
If Detroit can go so absurdly downhill in 60 years, it can happen anywhere under the right combination of conditions.
Black separatists and their associated anti-white contingents are Detroit's problem. The totally black city government has been an absolute failure. They do nothing but point fingers and fight - no problem solving skills whatsoever. Almost everyone with any assets and a shred of intelligence has moved out of the city to the suburbs, except for a few wealthy pocket neighborhoods who hire their own security guards to patrol.
What a bunch of nonsense R18.
Black separatists didn't cause Detroit to lose 100,000 manufacturing jobs in the 1950s.
Coleman Young, I might add, was never a black separatist.
The city was much better off when Young held office than it is now. The only decent mayor since Young was Dennis Archer's brief stint. He was the last to have any progress in getting the city started in the right direction but then scum of the earth separatist Kilpatrick took power and even the black middle class left the city in droves.
R19 the condition of the city is far beyond the effects of job loss. The surrounding suburban area is surviving, even thriving in some areas, while the city rots. People are leaving the city proper much, much more than leaving the surrounding area.
The city core scares the crap out of anyone who drives through it. DO NOT drive there at night and drive very quickly in the daytime.
R20 The same exact thing is happening in Memphis, TN. The downtown core, as they call it there, is dying out, but the suburbs are booming and have plenty of jobs. So odd how two cities can have that same exact situation.
The suburbs of Detroit are barely growing, in some cases shrinking, but the metro's footprint continues to expand farther and farther afield.
The few neighborhoods of Detroit that have managed to remain stable exist as islands separated by miles of blight. To fix this will require something I'm not sure has ever been done in the history of city-building. And exactly what "that" even is I'm not sure.
One great thing in Detroit and Michigan's (and the Great Lakes states in general) favor going forward is going to be their abundant supply of freshwater. Michigan has already been doing quite well economically over the past few years, and as climate change picks up and areas to the south become more expensive to live in because of their resource-intensive nature (even a city like Atlanta has severe water access issues!) people will once again look to the areas that can offer real urbanism at an affordable price. When that happens Detroit will be sitting pretty.
I **LOVE** R1!
R22, there are no "booming" suburbs of Memphis. Memphis is another metro that is barely growing but continues to expand geographically. In the long run this benefits no one as all that's really happening is a shuffling of resources. That's not real growth.
R9--Rochester also had Xerox. Oops. Still has Bausch & Lomb.
[quote]The totally black city government has been an absolute failure. They do nothing but point fingers and fight - no problem solving skills whatsoever.
I agree - lets call a spade a spade.
Here's an example:
Why do we have to deal with these racists on Detroit threads, but not on Los Angeles threads? Didn't Los Angeles have a black mayor before Detroit?
And Bermuda, which is heavily black, is the wealthiest country in the world.
So let's stop race baiting and start using the little grey cells to investigate things, shall we?
[quote]Detroit is built around car manufacturing and the cars that they produced couldn't sell because they were so defective.
Can you post a report verifying this?
R12 is a Freeper, R28.
This site may actually manufacture that.
Anything to keep Datalounge.com seeming interesting.
R25 I meant the suburban cities of the county Memphis is located in. Sorry for not being clearer and all.
R28 Detroit is almost 80% black with a 30+ year history of black mayors and majority black city council. Los Angeles does not have that percentage of black population nor the history of black dominated government beyond just the mayorship.
Desoto and Marshall counties in Mississippi, just south of Memphis, are booming.
I had an occasion recently to drive from Grenada, Mississippi north on U.S. 51, which at the state line is renamed "Elvis Presley Boulevard" because Graceland is located on this highway.
I'd say beginning just north of Senatobia, forty miles south of Memphis, you start seeing housing development after housing development, all the way to Southaven.
I was amazed.
Does anyone live in MEM anymore?
R22, that has been the trend for the vast majority of cities for the past several decades - suburban sprawl/downtown decay. Some have reversed the trend in the past few years, most notably NY.
OP, if you'll go to Detroit you'll see that what you've heard is a fat lie. There are indeed sections of the city that are barren, but much of the city is still bustling with activity.
Don't believe everything you read or hear.
Things have calmed down a little since both "y'alls boy" and his mama are out of office.
I have a relative that works for the city of Detroit. A long time ago she told me these rumors she's heard about Kwame having crazy parties at the Manoogian Mansion where he had strippers entertaining him and his friends. Kwame's wife came home unexpectedly and assaulted one of the strippers. And that the strippers who were there were getting murdered afterwards, and anyone in the Detroit police department who tried to do something about it got brushed off or demoted. At the time I thought she was full of shit. A few years later it all came to light and she was 100% right.
NBC news did a story about Detroit coming back. Car manufacturing is getting stronger all the time, the economy finally turned a corner and high tech companies are finding Detroit to be a great place to set down roots.
R42 Detroit "coming back" my ass.
Downtown Detroit actually isn't doing too badly. Anything outside of that vicinity is a hell hole, though.
If any DL'ers are interested one whit as to the abysmal reality which is Detroit, I recommend the documentary "Detropia". It was a prize winner at Sundance last year. Mayor Bing actually IS doing something about the blight of 10,000 empty condemned houses which are at the root of an inner city which is on life support. They are tearing down all the houses at a rate of about 10 per day. As green space emerges, they plan to convert Detroit into the first urban farming capitol.
Can't build cars? Grow corn and soy beans instead. I wrote Mayor Bing that his plan has some merit, but if he would like to see DTW become as rich as Oyster Bay, pass a state law that all the reclaimed farmland be used to legally grow marijuana for the growing demands of the states which will slowly but steadily be legalizing weed election by election.
Obviously there would be a tax benefit much like we have in FL, where we pay no state tax...we use the tourists for revenue. Then kick in a bit of Indian Reservation wizardry and mandate that the profits go to the potential new employers with the caveat that they must hire DTW residents in whatever business they pursue with their newly found capital.
I think the place could be salvageable yet. But I am a political dreamer.
I should have listened to Barbara Cockran, the real estate expert who, 2 years ago, said to buy houses in Detroit because they are going for a song. She neglected to say that you will probably get murdered while living in that shithole of a crack den city. Just plow the entire city and create farmland.
They are doing that, R46. But why bulldoze the parts that look like this?
R42, there's a difference between "Detroit" the city proper and "Detroit" the American auto industry - just like Hollywood, California and "Hollywood" the film industry.
It went downhill ever since madonana left
Psst, Detroit. Give me a call.
I've lost just as much population as you (on a percentage basis), my crime rate is just as high as yours, my downtown isn't nearly as vibrant as yours and my airport has been dehubbed and is about 60% underutilized. Give me a call so I can tell you how to avoid the bad press you keep getting.
St. Louis, Missouri
r47 through r50, it depends on where that neighborhood is located. Some areas around the city are/were the homes of wealthy. It looks like this neighborhood is one of them.
It is tempting to purchase real estate in Detroit. It is pretty darn cheap. However, what is the point if you end up getting killed or have a high crime rate?
Search for "Ruins of Detroit" if you really want to see the damage. It is like an ancient city in ruins. Sad.
I would buy a house there. I am worried that being a low-income white that I would be killed or deal with crime. And that is sad, you know, but I am glad that this topic has come up.
I don't hate black people, but I am concerned that they won't want ME there.
It's sad that so many beautiful buildings were not maintained and now are just ruins like this.
That's not true, St. Louis' downtown is much better off than Detroit's.
Since Detroit is dying- slowly, but inexorably- and will soon be forced to sell the DIAs artwork due to bankruptcy, why not make it an experiment?
Many sections are war zones comparable to Baghdad or Islamabad. Many homes are vacant and in need of repair. Parts of downtown have amazing buildings that are falling apart from disrepair. The police and hospitals won't even respond to 911 calls in parts of the city. The government has stopped work on the downtown jail and seeks bids from private investors. Basically the city is FUCKED! The current system will just make it worse.
So, why not make it an independent city state, with no state/federal taxes or regulations or laws, a totally independent entity, governed only by the US Constitution?
They could (if they wished) eliminate all tariffs, make anything they wished "legal tender", decriminalize drugs/gambling/ prostitution, eliminate most taxes and shrink the government to less than 1% of the "GDP" of the city.
If they failed, then "libertarianism" would be discredited.
The reason they won't- because it would prove that a free-market, libertarian system is superior to the socialist/fascist system that we have in the USA.
I wonder how long before the psychotic "government is GOD" poster shows up.
R34 you are right, NY city has become a fantastic city. But just you wait, they are working on changing that right now. They are working on stopping "stop and frisk", whic is basically the mayor and police commissioners way of trying to stop trouble before it happens. It has kept crime levels low. Everything the current mayor and the mayoress before him has done to make it a safe city will be undone. They are looking to make it a crime (for the officers) to attempt to prevent a crime. Tragic.
Man: Well, what've you got?
Waitress: Well, there's egg and bacon; egg sausage and bacon; egg and spam; egg bacon and spam; egg bacon sausage and spam; spam bacon sausage and spam; spam egg spam spam bacon and spam; spam sausage spam spam bacon spam tomato and spam;

Wife: Have you got anything without spam?
Waitress: Well, there's spam egg sausage and spam, that's not got much spam in it.
Wife: I don't want ANY spam!

Vikings: Spam spam spam spam... (Crescendo through next few lines...)

Rochester is doing great, R9.
Detroit could take a lesson or two.
It's an extremely diversified seat of industry, it's a major university town, and plenty of Kodak, Xerox and Wegmans fortunes/pensions are flowing into small businesses.
I love it!
Rochester is not "doing great."
Billions have been spent on schemes to fix Detroit but private capital continues to shun it.
It is too big with too expensive an infrastructure. What it needs is to be broken up into several cities because one or two of them would improve immediately.
Those Mississippi subdivisions are not suburbs of Memphis. They are suburbs of Tunica, the gambling mecca of North Mississippi.
Keep fucking that chicken!
That's why I think Detroit should be turned into an autonomous city-state, free of all federal taxes and regulations.
Allow it to be free and turn it into the Hong Kong of the US.
R66-R68, Insane libertarian freak bumping old threads to promote his psychotic cult.
I don't agree that the cars were defective, at least Ford products. My family is pretty loyal to Ford, but I was the black sheep and always had foreign imports. A few years ago my then-car had taken a crap, so I bought a used Mustang because it was a good deal and it was in great condition. I have to say that the quality was very good and it was bulletproof. No complaints. I have a Toyota now, but can now see why my family likes Ford products.
GM is a whole other story though. Yikes!
I tested since another thread got shut down. Chill out. I posted at R68 because I think that small, local, responsive government is a good thing.
I have a better idea: turn the Idiot Libertarian Troll into an autonomous city-state. Give him his own private internet (built by private enterprise, of course). Ban him from any and all communication with the outside world.
Let people have land and make family farms. A few chickens. Some acreage for potatoes and greens. But outlaw corn.
OP: "Whitney Houston is dead??? Oh my god! How is Michael Jackson taking it?"
This was the gayborhood back in the day. Nothing now. Abandoned buildings, vacant lots. I knew one man who was proud of tricking in every building in the hood.
The true reason Detroit failed is they were mean to the gays.
Fire every city employee and privatize all property. The city would thrive.
Kill R80 and confiscate his property (if he has any, which is doubtful).
The world will be less annoyed.
So, why hasn't anyone posted a coherent rebuttal of my proposal?
I have an answer-
If Detroit (and all current residents) was turned into a North American version of Hong Kong, with zero taxes and zero regulation (within the borders) it would destroy every socialist fantasy.
No welfare. No subsidies. No government control of the roads, the hospitals, the schools...it would prove how ignorant the socialist/communists are.
It would raise the standard of living for EVERYONE in the city, even the poor, and attract both business and residents.
[quote]So, why hasn't anyone posted a coherent rebuttal of my proposal?
Because you're demonstrably clinically insane?
Next stupid question?
Ooooohhhhh... Good one, R83!
When you graduate kindergarten come back and try again.
Listen, Im from Detroit and theres a lot of good people who live there but the people who run it are another story.
Simple, R84. I refuse to argue with crazy people.
You've proven time and time again that your grip on reality is, shall we say, profoundly challenged.
Your repetitive bulk spamming of posts is beyond tired.
If your city became a free city-state, with zero federal taxes and regulations, where businesses could start up with no red tape, where a company didn't have to bribe a dozen officials to set up a clothing manufacturing warehouse or restaurant or --- GOD FORBID--- start a brothel or set up a casino or sell marijauna...would you be better off?
Gurl i live in Chicago now. Dont talk to me about unorthadox politics.
You people voted for Rahm- you deserve your fate.
Believing that the government is telling the truth is fantasy.
I understand. Actually debating the facts would force you to admit that you are profoundly wrong in your worship of government power. That takes courage.
I guess you're just a pussy, comfortable in your ignorance.
