Is it possible? I’m hoping someone knows a bit about food allergies and can help me. I have an identical twin sister. When she was very young, (about 2 weeks old) her pediatrician discovered that she was extremely allergic to milk fat (which was in most infant formulas) our pediatrician knew what it was right away and had my mom switch to soy formula for both of us. When my sister was around 4 months old and she'd started eating solid food, my parents and my sister's doctor found out that my sister now had allergies to products containing milk fats: butter, full fat milk (but skim milk WAS OK, just in small amounts), yogurt, all types of cheese, chocolate and anything made with peanuts. The peanut butter allergy reaction was the worst as well as being extremely hard on her body for her. When my sister eats any those foods she ends up with the most horrible cough, 99% of the time she would cough so hard that she would end up peeing her pants, throwing up and then passing out. There were also many, many, times that she coughed so hard and long that she started coughing up blood. The only things her doctors did was run allergy tests, give her heavy duty cough medication and tell my parents to keep her away from those foods she couldn't have. My parents were great about keeping the things she was allergic to out of the house, but being a kid; she would find ways around that, trading lunch with other kids and the like. By the time she was about 7 or 8 years old she understood the correlation between eating the food she was allergic to and being sick and she tried very hard to avoid those foods. She is now 33 and she can now eat all of those foods with ABSOLUELY no allergic reaction or side effects. She says that it started when she was in college she, on occasion, started eating very small amounts of chocolate (1/8th of a Hershey's kiss or a minuscule bite of a chocolate bar) and in three and a half years she'd slowly worked her way up through her allergy of chocolate and could eat as much chocolate as she wanted. After her 'chocolate allergy diet' she did the same with butter, ice-cream, non skin milk, yogurt and cheese but spread it out over a longer time period of ten years and again she had no allergic reaction. She tried it with peanut butter and while doing pretty good with it, she can't/won't eat it now if she feels she's coming down with a cold because something in the peanut butter will cause the cough that normally comes with a cold 1,000 times worse, and she's back to coughing till she passes out and coughing up blood. If it were anyone but my twin sister I'd think she was never allergic to the foods in the first place, and was full of shit, but I saw what she went through and no one could fake those kinds of allergy reactions at such a young ago. SO...... Did she somehow make herself immune to the foods she was allergic to by eating extremely small bits of it over time? Did she just outgrow her allergies? Or is there another way for severe food allergies to completely vanish like hers did? Also, we are 100% identical in just about every way so why didn't I have the same allergies?
