FOX affiliate closed-captioning names 'Zooey Deschanel' as Boston Marathon bombing suspect By Laurel Brown | April 19, 2013 10:22 PM ET There haven't been many laughs available as police hunted for a man wanted for the Boston Marathon bombings of Monday, April 15. But thanks to a local FOX affiliate and some creative captioning, we did get one: A captioning accident led to the name "Zooey Deschanel" being substituted for "Dzhokar Tsarnaev." A photo of the strange and rather amusing mix-up was posted on Twitter by user @peterogburn on Friday (April 19). Aired at 1:47pm local time, the closed-captioning that accompanied a news report on the manhunt for Tsarnaev made a laughable mistake. Next to a photo of the 19-year-old man, the following words appeared: "He is 19-year-old Zooey Deschanel" For the sake of basic human intelligence, we're going to assume that the person (or computer) writing the captions did not write the name of the "New Girl" star on purpose. The most likely situation instead seems to be a simple case of auto-correct failure. The suspect's unusual and hard-to-spell name could easily have fallen prey to that well-meaning but oft-incorrect computer function. Deschanel herself proved to be a good sport about the whole thing, retweeting the photo to her own followers with only the comment, "Whoa! Epic closed captioning FAIL!" Whatever the case, the error meant that we all got a bit of a laugh at a time when it was sorely needed.
