It's no Firefly. But it might be a farscape? maybe?
Can't really tell yet.
I dunno. There seems to be potential maybe, but... it all seems so very contrived.
And so much *reading*... the constant subtitles are annoying.
[quote]It's no Firefly.
So it is actually watchable then?
I want Grant Bowler to cum inside me quite fiercely.
R1, I know you're "R1", but don't be an ass.
That was an awful lot of female flesh for SyFy... wonder if they'll have an equal amount of male flesh.
Although they did have a hot alien guy hit on the male main character in the brothel, and he didn't get too upset about it.
Derivative beyond belief.
it was very Good, thank you please.
Probably not going to do well. Posted on hulu as web only. Meaning all the geeks like me that watch everything on mobile devices can't see it. You know their target audience.
And I won't watch because I want to see it on the big screen. I wish they wouldn't do that.
It was meh. Some potential there. Some good moments. A few good characters. But a lot of cheese, a lot of predictable, derivative stuff, and just not that compelling of a premiere.
SyFy insists it gets better though, so stick with it.
It is disappointing that the "races" are such stereotypes. The white skins are the aristocrats or intellectuals. The "servant" races are squat and broad-faced.
The story lines are predictable.
I am hoping it will improve.
On the plus side, the hero is well-acted and well-muscled and they did hint at the homo-sex.
Seems a lot like Terra Nova to me, but I suppose it's worth watching to see if it picks up.
I see Mia Kirshner is playing the same type of sex pot character as always. Hopefully she'll be less annoying in this than she was in the L Word.
Lead guy Grant Bowler hosts the local Aussie version of Amazing Race.
Trolldar reveals all:
"[[R1]], I know you're "R1", but don't be an ass."
You're talking to yourself again, OP?
Having another junk food binge, you psychotic cunt?
You're so sad.
We eagerly anticipate your suicide by binge-eating.
I love Doc.
R15 = obsessively unhinged stalker freak who can't even read (no, nobody's talking to themselves, you can't read)
Y'all, the post where R1 would normally be is R6. Something's weird with the order of the posts. R3/R4 is talking to what on my screen is R2, not to himself.
But R15 is such an unhinged harpy stalker that they'll grasp at anything (no matter how wrong, as they prove over and over) to bash anyone who doesn't think all food not prepared by their own hands from organic sources is POISON. They're posting their hateful (laughable) nonsense all over a bunch of threads.
Facts don't matter to this clown.
What is "Defiance"? Yet another Science Fiction with no gay people?
How is it that science fiction writers always envision a future with no gay people? Except in the Hunger Games films, where the gay people are the evil evil evil people?
R21, one of the first scenes in the city was at a brothel, where a hot male came up to the main character (male) and hit on him.
I looked up the wikipedia entry because there was some stuff I didn't understand during the premiere.
There is a whole heck of a lot on information about the different alien species along with info on the history of the Pale Wars. Where the hell does all that come from? Does somebody have to play the video game to learn all this stuff? Cause it sure wasn't detailed in the TV show.
Actually I think the stuff about the years between the alien arrival and the Pale Wars sounds like a more interesting show than what I saw in Episode 1. Maybe that's their idea for a spinoff show or videogame - if Defiance does well.
Finally watched it on my DVR and found a lot of it difficult to follow. (And I'm a person who liked Battlestar Galactica, Caprica and other heavy scifi.) As someone mentioned above, I wonder where you're supposed to get most of the backstory about the different aliens, the wars, etc. The high point was definitely a shirtless Grant Bowler. Will probably watch the next episode and see how it develops but doesn't look like a must-watch show.
It's kind of annoying that they are trying to make 'shtako' a replacement for 'shit' in the same way that Battlestar Galactica made 'frack' acceptable.
Reviews are saying the second episode is better than the first.
Reviews also say the game is basically "meh", but at least it gives you more story background.
Only 20 minutes into the third episode, and I think I'm out.
This thing is a dud.
R21 you do know that Doctor Who and Torchwood are absolutely wall to wall gayness? There have been gay encounters in Star Trek TNG as well. It's not as common as heterosexual characters but they are there, and in about the same numbers as gay characters appear in mainstream TV. Caprica had a gay couple too.
Not everything has to be a crusade, it is possible to just watch a show and either like or dislike the storyline without counting the number of fey Ferenghi, Daleks in drag or camp Cardassians. (I loved the camp bitchfight between the Daleks and the Cybermen BTW)
I wasn't crazy about the hell bugs in the 3rd episode, or the alien species that can have visions.
The show is stupid, boring, and doesn't seem to have a point.
How big is Julie Benz's role?
Really big in the premier, but not so much last night.
It seems every show with aliens has to have a wookie like creature or Brent Spiner.
Two main things turn me off, the lack of gays...and that they have an obedient race of aliens that provide a serving class.
However, the giant steam-punk alien guy had an impressive chest when his shirt was off.
So dull. ZZZZZZ
so boring and dull
Was that our Brian Kinney?
They should yank it now and stop the bleeding.
I liked the latest episode. They're fleshing out the world they live in and developing some sub-plots. It's better than the pilot.
I kind of like the show but feel something's missing. It doesn't feel like sci-fi. It's just a cop/western show with some aliens.
I had the same problem with SGU, they were on this wonderful spaceship with so many cool things and all they did was concentrate on their sex lives and personal drama.
I liked his suit.
His suit was cool, but isn't he too thin?
[quote]It's just a cop/western show with some aliens.
That's basically what it is, a western.
[quote]His suit was cool, but isn't he too thin?
I didn't notice that he was thinner than normal.
It was so sad, no Defiance this week:(
why why why :(
The season finale wasn't completely awful.
The lead lawman has quite the package! Anybody noticed that besides me?
I like it. It IS a western with aliens, sort of, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
its passing the time, until game of thrones returns
There's no science on SyFy anymore, it's all fantasy crap.
[quote]There's no science on SyFy anymore, it's all fantasy crap.
And paranormal stuff.
I got about 7 episodes in and stopped watching.
It sure as hell ain't no BSG!
I'm wondering if I should even bother to watch the rest of the show, since I already know I'm not coming back for season 2.
I thought a second season was okayed about halfway in.
I've grown to like this show. Some of the Aliens are intriguing. Grant Bowler really knows how to fill out a pair of pants.
I think Grant Bowler is hot as hell.
He was in a remake of On The Beach a number of years back. He had VPL for days & it was quite impressive.
I watched two DVR'd episodes last night. Bowler's ass was featured in a number of profiles. Very nice.
Fantastic cliffhanger finale. One of the best shows on SyFy right now (I gave up on Haven at the beginning of last season, and is Warehouse 13 still on?)
Has it been renewed yet?
Why are we not talking about Jaime Murray's poisonously campy simpering as Stahma Tarr? Best performance on the show, with Tony Curran's Datak not far behind.
I sort of love and hate the show but I did end up liking the second season to a point. I hate those fucking white alien people, I don't even remember what they are called. But there haven't been so many shows that are so unabashedly sci-fi as Defiance is, and at the moment is there any other? Shows like Extant are practically just your basic Lifetime movies with a thin sheet of sci-fi thrown on top. So just for sci-fi's sake I want to see more of Defiance.
Apparently the Defiance MMO game isn't doing well anymore and it might affect whether third season gets green light.
Jaime Murray has been wonderful as Stahma. She is delightfully evil. Datak has grown on me. I cannot abide their son.
The season finale felt very much like a season finale, which would be too bad. Too much sci fi has become religious melodrama or bad monster movies.
Please, no more vampires, zombies, shape-shifters or werewolves!
