I love how that one story back in the early 70s informed everything with those 2 for 30 years, just like in real life.

He could take one event -- Kay driving off the cliff and killing Phillip -- and use it to propel decades of stories.

The two women fought over his son, then his grandson.

The writers today feel they have to make one thing happen right after the other, boom, bang, bing.

I think it's basic character writing, too. There was a clear picture of who these characters were and they used it to colour everything that happened thereafter.

I was really upset when Darlene Conley and Beverlee McKinsey died. It takes an enormous toll on the fanbase when these iconic women we plan our lives around to watch pass on. People are praying with every fibre of their being that Jeanne will be with us many more years to come. It is a really profound thing.

When the NYTimes didn't run her obit a day or so after her death I emailed them. I don't know if I was the only one (I would assume there may have been others) but a day or so after I emailed, they did run a short obituary.

She had one in the LA Times R34. It wasn't a matter of her family not releasing one.

For the NYTimes it had been a number of years since she'd lived in NY. But she was there for 20+ years and headlined two shows made there (Another World and Guiding Light) so a New York paper should have listed her passing.

Hell, Beverlee McKinsey put the art into soap opera. There was never another. I wish somebody would erect a statue of her outside the old AW Brooklyn studios. As tasteless as the idea sounds, she deserved the moon.

It's sad that a son is losing his mother but Jeanne Cooper and Darlene Conley were two of the biggest eye-rolling ham hocks ever on daytime soaps. Thet epitomized what in LA soaps passed for "humor."

Beth Chamberlain is a darling for making the effort. I think a bunch of soap fans need to stage a protest outside the daytime emmys for their negligence. Granted they may all be over 50 gay guys but Bev is worth it.

What really needs to happen is for there to be a Soap Opera Hall of Fame, and a museum.

I've got a little bit of juicy gossip for you re: Quinn Redecker. Perusing the book again, I read that Cooper calls Redecker a brilliant man, stating she and Redecker shared a weekend together in San Diego that she labels as "romantic" and silly, noting that she and Redecker never thought of it as anything more serious than what it was. So you can add Redecker to the list of co-stars Cooper had intimate relations with off the set.

Cooper was quite a zesty old bird. She confirms those rumours that she was a notorious "pincher" on set are true. Her sexy young co-stars played along when Cooper would pinch their bottoms during scenes; sometimes some, like Josh Morrow, would carry on with the scene and it would go interrupted despite Cooper's goosing them. She states she finds it hilarious that it had become a sort of parlour game for Y&R viewers to see if they could see when she was pinching these young men during their scenes. She even did it to Eric Braeden, with whom she adored working with and had a friendly oneupmanship with him in trying to get Katherine to have the last word in their scenes together, to which Braeden was always determined to have, sneaking in one last improvised line before the director yelled cut. She concludes her section on Braeden by stating "Thank God for Eric Braeden"!

Greg Reikkart got more of a special assault by the notorious pincher when, during the filming of Katherine's wedding to Murphy, Cooper says she stopped midway down the aisle and leaned in close to Reikkart and grabbed his crotch.

As for Victoria Rowell, Cooper has nothing but glowing accolades to say, noting her energy and fiestiness (nothing about her craziness or anything controversial). She loved the whole Winters actors. As stated before, she reserves space for everyone on the show. She even spends 3-4 pages gushing about David Hasselhoff. She had a special fondness for Patty Weaver and gushes about her, instructing the reader to seek a clip out on YT of Gina Roma singing the Y&R theme.

Btw, notable absences are Thom Bierdz and the guy who plays Cane, two young actors she worked very closely with and yet they do not garner a mention in her rememberences.

love the fact that she basically accosted and had her way with all the hot men on that show for years! sexy minx!... i have no doubt if she wanted to (perhaps she did but never told) she could have got any young stud to bed her regardless if she was literally old enough to be their grandmother!

on a sidenote, I always loved her and the OLD JILL scenes! they were a hoot! and damn if i didn't LOVE LOVE the storyline of katherine chancellor and her lust turned to love affair with jerry "cash" cashman (played by the one and only john gibson) who was a male stripper and owner of the bayou strip club!.. yeah, ONLY IN SOAP OPERA LAND would a gorgeous built male stripper be in equal lust with rich old woman old enough to be his mother!

i very vaguely remember her hiring him to be her escort/gigolo BEFORE falling in love with him and vice versa a scene of her upstairs in the mansion looking down at the pool to see him in the world's tiniest light blue bikini/speedo and her character looking down at him in UTTER LUST AND LITERALLY SHAKING AND QUIVERING WITH DESIRE! man, that scene was so smoking hot!.. i've LOOKED FOREVER ON YOUTUBE for videos of their scenes from that time period of the young and the restless circa 1982-1983 and have never found ANY scenes of them together OR just the one and only john gibson either!.. MAJOR BUMMER i must say!..

This was my first post before the one you reposted:

I flipped through a copy of Jeanne Cooper's memoirs and thought some who haven't read it would be interested in these little tidbits:

By now everyone knows she had an affair with her TV son Beau Kizer (Brock), but she also admits to having a couple of sexual assignations with sexy Donnelly Rhodes when he played her husband Phillip Chancellor.

Cooper loved working with Victor Mohica, who played Felipe Ramirez, the island man who became Kay's little-remembered forth husband. She said that if she could have had any of Kay's husbands as her own in real life, it would have been him.

I was surprised that she loved Brenda Dickson so much. Divaish Dickson treated Cooper like dirt when they first started working together, but a huge blow out smoothed everything out and the two always enjoyed working together. Cooper does not go into Dickson's leaving Y&R, saying that is Dickson's own story to tell. Cooper regrets trying to force Dickson's replacement Jess Walton to act more like Dickson, giving Walton tapes of Brenda to watch so she could essentially play Brenda Dickson. Walton never watched any of them because she was going to play her version of Jill. Walton and Cooper ended up becoming extremely close.

Cooper (and Walton) absolutely HATED the storyline in which Katherine and Jill thought they were mother and daughter. She also hated that Jerry Douglas and Don Diamont were killed off the show.

She praises most of her costars, including Eileen Davidson (with whom she had wished the writers would have developed more of a relationship between Kay and Ashley); Beth Maitland (who she thought should have taken over Jerry Douglas' role as head of the Abbotts after John Abbott died); Tracey Bregman; Tricia Cast; Tonya Lee Williams; Doug Davidson; Don Diamont; Lauralee Bell; Eric Braeden; and Shemar Moore, among others. She mentions (and mourns) Terry Lester quite frequently, as they had become very close through the years. Of his departure from Y&R, she only says it was an incredbile mistake on his part.

She talks in depth about her drama with the Scotts - how she was pleased with Ed Scott being hired to bring some new freshness to the show, but slowly realized he wanted to get rid of the character of Katherine. After he married Melody Thomas, her friendship with Melody, whom she adored working with, was seriously damaged by his dislike of Cooper. With no warning, Melody stopped talking to Cooper, making for some chilly atmosphere on the set: Nikki and Kay were still friends on the show, and once the director said cut, Melody said nothing to Cooper at all. This lasted for years until one day, without any warning, Melody offered an olive branch to Cooper during the preparation of a scene they were in, and the two resumed speaking terms. Strange lady, that Mrs Scott.

The one thing I was really surprised by was Cooper revealing she was seriously considering leaving Y&R back in the 90s for another soap. Terry Lester, who was starring on ATWT, introduced Cooper to Douglas Marland, who gushed over the soap legend and said he would love nothing better than to create a role for her. Although the prospect of moving to New York was not something she wanted to do, she told Marland if he were writing for her, she would do it. Soon after their meeting, Marland died, and Cooper regrets what could have been (Cooper also reprints Marland's infamous Commandments on "How to Write for a Soap Opera").

Terry Lester and she were extremely close. They spent alot of time together throughout the years and spoke for hours on the phone when they weren't. She writes that he had a very dark side that haunted him. He agonized over his mistake of leaving Y&R in 89 and burning his bridges with Bill Bell.

She writes that her love for Lester led her to initially reject the casting of Peter Bregman in the role of Jack; she felt he was the total opposite of what Jack was supposed to be. However, he proved himself a classy gentleman and Cooper and he eventually became very close. She marvels at how two talented actors could have such different interpretations of the same character and manage to make it their own in their own individual ways.

She talks about the notorious blowout between Bregman and Braeden which led to fisticuffs on the set during a scene which led to the top brass contemplating firing Bregman. Cooper states that she went to bat for Bregman and threatened to quit herself if Bregman was fired. She was not picking sides but felt that it was an unfortunate mistake that should not cost an actor his job.

Cooper apparently was always willing to go to bat for the underdog: when she learned Guiding Light was cancelled, she was furious and let the top brass know her feelings. She writes that more consideration and care should have been given to daytime's longest running show, that if it was broke it should have been fixed. Her classic statement: "If you find cracks in the Lincoln Memorial you don't replace it with a strip mall".

She requested a cameo background scene in the final weeks on GL, and Christian Leblanc (another actor she includes in her favorite costars write-up) jumped right in and asked to join in. GL exec producer Ellen Wheeler jumped at the chance and had a scene specially written for them (in which they played a wealthy dowager and her Italian studboy).

Cooper also tried to get Nancy Grahn, another actress she adored, a job at Y&R. Grahn had been trying to make a name for herself in primetime after SANTA BARBARA was cancelled, but nothing was working out. Cooper encouraged Grahn to pitch herself to Bill Bell. Grahn was hesitant, but Cooper insisted she introduce herself to Bell at the Soap Opera Awards. Prepped and primed by Cooper and Cooper's best friend, Grahn reluctantly went up to Bell and introduced herself. The man replied, "It's nice to meet you Miss Grahn, but I am Jerry Douglas" (Jerry looked uncanningly like Bill Bell). Embarrassed by the faux pas, Grahn retreated and left without pursuing the real Bill Bell.

Btw, I am surprised that apparently it has been implied that Katherine Chancellor and John Abbott were former lovers? According to Cooper, she speaks of both characters as having once shared a romantic past, and refers to John as Katherine's ex-lover.

Other tidbits:

Cooper states that the one true love of Katherine Chancellor's life was her island husband Felipe Ramirez.

Her all-time favorite storyline was the Marge the waitress story.

When she tested for the role of Katherine, John Considine was hired as Phillip Chancellor and played the scene with her. He was quickly replaced by Donnelly Rhodes and she never found out why.

The only other daytime role she ever auditioned for was for the part of Julie Olsen on a soap that was to be named Days Of Our Lives. The role went to the much younger Susan Seaforth.

She was "pals" with Barbara Stanwyck and Lucille Ball; Cooper was nominated for an Emmy for a guest starring role on the TV show Ben Casey but lost out to actress Pamela Brown, a choice the appalled her "pals" Stanwyck and Ball.

Her own real-life marriage to Harry Bernson (Corbin's dad) was tumultuous; Bernson cheated on her and pilfered money from her to support his mistress. Cooper found out all about it when the mistress called her on the set and told her Harry needed more money to support the life she was becoming accustomed to.

Cooper fought tooth and nail not to have Julianna McCarthy killed off in 2010, a decision she HATED.

And I forgot to point out the soap irony of Cooper auditioninng for the role of Julie Olsen and losing it to Susan Seaforth; years later, Susan Seaforth Hayes' mother Elizabeth Harrower would play opposite Cooper as Kay's former bar buddy Charlotte Ramsey.

Julianna did a guest spot on Melrose Place with Kathleen Freeman. They played sour ice cream magnates. Madge and Mabel. They bellowed and snapped at Billy and Alison at the ad agency. It was a high point of Season 4 and strangely memorable.

I always thought the 2 loves of Katherine's life was Phillip and Rex. The relationship with Phillip eventually became toxic but it impacted her life more than any other.

Well, according to her memoirs, Jeanne Cooper states flat out that she believes Felipe Ramirez was the true love of Katherine's life.

Of course, Bill Bell may disagree with her as his vision of Katherine occasionally differed from hers. Cooper relates a run-in with Bell over a piece of dialogue that Katherine was scripted to say and Cooper balked, saying that that was something she would never say in a million years. Bell exploded and said something to the effect "Maybe you wouldn't, but Katherine would". It was a lesson for Cooper that although she was living Katherine day in and day out onscreen, it was Bell who was creating her every day and night. After that incident, she respected his creative genius and did what she was told and said what she was to say.

As for Felipe Ramirez, I copy and paste this from Soap Central:

"Katherine fell in love with and tricked hairdresser Derek Thurston into marrying her. Derek was really in love with Jill Foster. But Derek took Katherine up on her deal. If he lived with Katherine for a year, she would set up a $100,000 trust for Jill's son and set Derek up in his own salon. Then Derek's ex-wife, Suzanne Lynch, arrived in town, intent on getting Derek back. She befriended Katherine, and gave her candy laced with drugs, which drove Katherine into a sanitarium.

Katherine's roommate went berserk and set fire to the room. Katherine escaped, but the roommate's body was identified as Katherine because she had been wearing Katherine's ring. Derek found himself free of both wives, inheriting the Chancellor wealth, and free to marry Jill. But Katherine showed up at their wedding -- very much alive. Katherine reclaimed her fortune and Derek, and named him head of Chancellor Industries. In 1981, Katherine and Derek went on a cruise, and during a fight, Katherine jumped overboard. Felipe Ramirez rescued her and held her captive. They fell in love, and he set her free to return to her world where she divorced Derek."

PS: I guess I misunderstood Felipe's status - I thought Felipe and Katherine were briefly married on the island.

Anyway, the lessons of love and life and renewed strength that Felipe brought to Katherine's life were what made him stand apart from the rest of the men in her life. Felipe taught her to respect and love herself. The wealth and diamonds were not important to him, who she was deep down inside was.

Cooper writes that she loved that storyline and especially adored working with Victor Mohica, who played Felipe. She called him the most gorgeous man she ever saw in her life, and, as I wrote before, she said if she could have any of Kay's men as her real-life husband, it would have been Felipe.

Btw, speaking of Kay's men, I realized another name she omits from her almost meticulous memoir is the late John Gibson who played Kay's stripper boytoy Jerry "Cash" Cashman. And Cooper's memory is sharp! She even mentions the fact writers forgot that Katherine loaned a young Lauren Fenmore $18,000 to produce a record back in the 80s.

r75, you are confusing Joe Ladue (who played heterosexual hairdresser Derek Thurston) with John Gibson (who played Cash, the owner of the strip club where Nikki first started stripping).

John Gibson, Chippendales stripper and PLAYGIRL model, died of AIDS in 1986.

Joe Ladue died last year at the age of 70 after suffering through Alzheimers. The last time he appeared on Y&R as Derek was a cameo as Kay's date at Victor and Nikki's first wedding in 1984.

On her feelings about Y&R writing out Diamont and Douglas, Cooper calls Diamont's last storyline "utterly insipid" that painted him and the character of Brad into a corner. She is grateful that Bradley Bell saved Diamont and cast him on B&B so Diamont could stay in the CBS studios closeby. As for killing off John Abbott, she says that it was one of those things that the new regime would do that would make Bill Bell "roll around in his grave" (the other being the Katherine-is-Jill's-mother storyline, which both she and Jess Walton were relieved was rewritten). She repeats Bell's motto that you do NOT kill off core family members. Bell was always resistant to kill off any character because he liked the option of bringing them back if he ever needed them. If a character wasn't working, he simply had them leave town. She mentions one character in particular that was just not clicking, so she went upstairs in the Abbott mansion to wash her hair and was never seen again. Don't know who that might have been ...?

Initially, Bell did not want Cooper for the part of Katherine, but gave into John Conboy's insistence she was perfect for the role. It took some time for Bell to accept her, and, months after she started on the show, Cooper finally met him and his wife when they came to the set to watch her do a scene. From that moment on, Cooper and the Bells became extremely close. She was extremely over-protective of Lauralee when the young girl started.

Cooper talks candidly about her alcohol problem, which started to affect her work on the set. She credits Bill Bell for saving her life when he told her sons to relay the message that he had a big storyline planned for her but she needed to go to rehab for her drinking. Cooper went to rehab and licked her drinking problem, but never found out exactly what big storyline Bell was referring to. She figured out that it was a trick to get her sobered up.

Last few bites from her memoirs:

Cooper's attitude towards sex set her a bit ahead of her time when she was a young actress making the rounds of Hollywood. She writes that she never would consider the involvements she had as "affairs", which she said entails "entanglements" and emotional commitments. Most of her sexual involvements were with friends that she preferred to keep as friends, to not allow aforementioned entangelements to complicate or compromise the friendship (which explains her laissez-faire recollection of intimate involvements with Rhodes, Kizer and Redecker). She even states that alot of these men were gay. She takes mischevious delight in throwing some well-known names at the reader, saying that's what the reader wants anyway. Her list of Hollywood lovers include David Janssen, Dennis Weaver, Robert Taylor, and Hugh O'Brien (well, she says almost with O'Brien and she was leaving it at that - perhaps an unintentional outing?). The biggest friend/lover bombshell is Raymond Burr, whom she referred to as a "dear friend".

(Cooper, btw, was extremely close friends with actress Barbara "Della Street" Hale and was overjoyed Hale got a job working opposite her other good friend Burr; she details how Burr and Hale became extremely close friends themselves and Burr helped Hale survive a very disastrous marriage).

Cooper talks candidly about her unhappy marriage with Harry Bernson, who used his position as Cooper's agent to invest in quick-rich schemes, support his gambling problem, and carry on with other women behind her back. She talks about how he tried to keep Corbin away from her after he was born because he believed Corbin was horribly deformed by the birth; when Cooper saw her firstborn son, she was relieved to see that it was just a hemotoma made by the forceps and would disappear as he started to grow; Bernson did the same thing later with their second son Collin, whom Harry called "deformed" because of a similar marking due to a difficult birth. Cooper says she realized later that she never really loved this very difficult and untrustworthy man.

She insists she never cheated on him, but was tempted by cowboy film/TV actor Dan Duryea. Duryea was pursuing her, and even made his advances clear in front of Harry. Cooper didn't feel it right to be the adulteror, but has always regretted not sleeping with Duryea.

As I said before, Stanwyck and Lucille Ball were very close friends, but so was Doris Day, who helped Cooper through her divorce from Bernsen.
