Why do you think mental illness is stigmatized in today's society?

It is very much a disease just like cancer yet many people do not accept it as a true illness and often comment that people who have mental illness "should just get over themselves". You would never tell someone with cancer to "just get over it". I think because people can't SEE that people who have mental illness are sick, that's why it's so stigmatized. What are your thoughts on all this?
