Gong Li. No question. Without a doubt.
Nancy Kwan was a lightweight.
Her name is MIchele Yeoh, not Michele Yeon.
And she's Malaysian, not Chinese.
Obviously Gong Li. Maybe the poll should be: 2nd Best Chinese Actress.
Probably Gong Li, though Maggie Cheung is a very close 2nd.
Maggie is fluent in English, it's a pity she's never pursued a full-blown career in England or Hollywood. Though it's likely she's been able to keep her reputation and mystique intact by avoiding the inevitable stereotypes and dreck Hollywood would have offered her.
Li went Hollywood. The material wasn't great, but she still did a good job.
There's more than one?
That lady who says "We need more Calgon!"
[quote]Maybe the poll should be: 2nd Best Chinese Actress.
Second only to Li Gong is Maggie Cheung, who was not on the list.
[quote]Li went Hollywood.
Bullshit. She starred in a handful of movies where being asian was required - Memoirs of a Geisha for one.
What's wrong with including Malaysian actresses? Are you saying they're not Chinese?
I can do Chinese.
R22, I used the term "went Hollywood" as a short term to indicate Li, unlike Cheung, has made English-language studio movies. It wasn't meant to be derisive. I was just being lazy. I'm a fan of hers and she can do whatever the fuck she likes and even if it's shit, it wouldn't affect my opinion that she gave some of the most amazing performances in the early 90's. Her cinematic legacy is ensured.
Hey, why aren't I on that list!?! Bore, bore bore!
