'Behind the Candelabra' Trailer: Michael Douglas as Liberace… and Matt Damon in a Speedo [Video]
The two A-listers share an intimate bedroom scene in the new HBO movie, debuting in May.
The link below includes a Youtube vid of Matt Damon getting out of a pool in a speedo and some brief shirtless scenes. It also has a continuous gif of Damon getting out of the pool.
What do you think of his body in this?
Nobody looked like that back then. Washboard stomachs are only since the mid-'90's.
R2: You really need to leave your bubble.
Okay, seriously: how do you make a 42-year-old actor believably look 22 again? Did they literally CG the wrinkles off his face in every scene?? Or maybe 20 layers of pancake make-up? (Michael Douglas looks pretty damn amazing for his geriatric age, too.)
The ONLY flaw in that Speedo scene is its failure to provide us with even a *hint* of the infamous Matt Damon Butt. That's some sweet stuff.
I love this film already
I'm sorry, but that is just cringe-worthy. It's every horrible gay stereotype brought to life.
It would be one thing if the director and actors were gay, but they aren't.
It's like if a white director and actors in blackface performed "Precious."
Did you recognize Dan Ackroyd or Debbie Reynolds or even Rob Lowe?
Is Rob Lowe's character based on a real plastic surgeon who Wildensteined his own face?
He is seriously scary looking.
When R2 said mid '90s, he must have meant the 1890s.

Um, Liberace WAS every horrible gay stereotype brought to life. I'm sorry you're self-loathing to the extent of being repulsed by "flamboyant" gay men, but not all of us want to "assimilate" with the breeders like you do.
self-loathing has lost all meaning.
THANK YOU, R11. Indeed, Liberace WAS the ultimate gay stereotype and that was part of what was amazing about him. He parlayed that into a fortune. I am just fascinated and can't wait to see this! How in the fuck could anyone find this cringe-worthy? Honey, Liberace WORKED to BE cringe-worthy. Anyone who would be "uncomfortable" watching this has "self acceptance" issues, let's just call them that. BIG time. Self loathing is an overused word. Probably applies to R6, though. Yep.
This has got to be one gigantic campfest, along the lines of Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Matt really buffed up for the role.
Liberace's flamboyance was his bread and butter. Without he would have been just another boring piano player. And while we may look at it and say, "what the fuck?" keep in mind, his biggest audience was suburban housewives. THEY LOVED HIM! They were able to look past the sequins and lip gloss and see the talent and showmanship. In a small and sort of unconventional way, he did his little bit in helping people accept a gay person for what they really are.
I just wish they had someone play him who could really do "over the top" well. They need an actor who could do a Batman villain performance. I don't know if Michael Douglas has the right stuff.
I got to say Matt looks incredible here.
Nice package too! He looks way hung! Yum!!!!!
I believe famous latino astrologer Walter Mercado copied Liberace's shtick and became quite famous as well
Was that Illeana Douglas in the voice over?
Walter Mercado! Holy shit. I haven't thought of him in like a million years. Yea, he may have stolen Liberace's shtick. And Zsa Zsa Gabor's stylist.
This movie looks terrible.
This movie is going to become an instant classic!
i may have to sign up for HBO just to see this TRASHfest! I mean trash in the best way possible.
I'm sorry but I have to say this again
Matt looks incredible!!!! Michael looks great as well.
When this project was first announced I had my doubts, but I take all back.
Michael will take the Emmy.
Liberace was an old male Dolly Parton and I'm sure he knew he was made fun of, but he didn't care. His audience was made up mainly of old women and their husbands and most of them never had any idea he was gay.
They all look uptight and awkward. Douglas looks and acts phony.
it looks as delightful and craptastic as the life of the Liberace himself.
I'm sorry, but having a straight man play a gay man with even a hint of the "ef-" word DOES NOT WORK. It's just like a southern accent - no one who ever lived can do one exactly right unless they is fruuum the south, born 'n raised.
I'm still queasy just thinking about the abomination of "Milk."
If I'm not mistaken, I think Matt's contracts all explicitly state that if a speedo is worn it shall not display the ass at any time, even with pause.
He's been taking lessons from his wife, r26.
Good Lord! Matt Damon looks amazing. He seems to have stepped back in time to how he looked about 20 years ago...
Michael Douglas has to be one of the worst actors alive...Think of all the great casting choices missed here...both of these actors (and I love Matt Butt) are too old...
Who would you cast?
Who ever decided that a movie about Liberace would be marketable? He was an embarrassing punchline when alive. I remember my two ancient maiden aunts liked him, but no one else did--no one young. All those old ladies are long gone, so who will pay to see this dreck?

Try to keep up. It's on HBO, so it already has a built in, "paying" audience
It certainly seems that way, R39. Why do you think that is?
R45 I think he is (justifiably) self-concious about it. "Lardass Syndrome" comes to mind :)
Why "justifiably", R49?
Shit. Put a Joey Heatherton with on him and use a CGI knife on his image and HOW AMAZING! Damon doesn't look like the same fat, doughy, balding thing that went home from the set every night.
Damon looks great, but he's about 20 years older than Scott Thorsten was. Thorsten was recently in the news and his age was given as 53.
No one, R43, that is why it is on HBO. I'll take this, the Grey Gardens remake, Cinema Verite and Hemmingway and Gelhorne over the bottom of the barrel shit studios are putting out.
I think he wearing a piece in that speedo. I hope it is all him but doubtful. I will say that he is making a little puffy down there. Wow. Lil Matt Damon! He looks awesome. I want him in me quite deeply too.
R62, I don't care what's in front when it comes to Mr. Damon. It's what's in back that matters.
Folks, I think we have a new camp classic. Why was Damon cast in this? Why did he WANT to be cast in this? Thorson was with Liberace from around age eighteen to 24. The movie would have been more interesting if it had that pervy May - December angle to it.
This subject would have been better in the hands of Gus van Sant.
Matt Damon has been my BF in my head for about 15 years now
I think it's great that Damon did this. I was getting a little sick of his "family" friendly phase. You know, now that he has kids. He is boyish enough to pull off the youthfulness even at 42.
Long Term Imaginary Relationship r65?
Congrats on the perfect relationship.
Damon was chosen because Soderbergh directed it. He always wants to use Matt.
Don't we all r68?
Ben Affleck admits it's not easy watching Michael Douglas kiss his Matt Damon in their upcoming Liberace film, Behind the Candelabra.
"Pretty jealous, pretty jealous," the Argo Oscar winner cracked last night at the premiere of his new movie, To the Wonder, when we asked if he was envious of Mr. Douglas.
He added, "It burns me up. You know, I feel the envy in my heart. I can't stand it."
Remember, Damon does refer to Affleck as his "hetero life mate."
"I saw Behind the Candelabra," Affleck said last night. "I don't know about the hetero part anymore."
Candelabra, directed by Steven Soderbergh, is the real-life story of Liberace and his very tumultuous relationship his much younger lover Scott Thorson.
"I've seen it," Affleck said. "It's spectacular to see. Matt is amazing. Michael Douglas is amazing. [Steven] Soderbergh's brilliant."
While the film is "light" and "fun," Affleck said, "It's also quite resonate."
