Should I invest the time to watch the entire series?
Well written, mostly. Lots of swinging cock action was pretty sweet too. But the violence eventually got too much for me and I didn't finish the whole series.
That eye stabbing scene still haunts me.
Absolutely you should OP. I fucking love OZ, that is one of the only shows I bought DVDs of that was not a comedy. The characters are great, the actors are great, the storyline is excellent. It was a blueprint for other HBO shows like Deadwood. It is violent but it's supposed to be, it's a prison show. I envy you because you get to see it for the first time.
I've never regretted any of the hours I devoted to OZ, and you won't either.
I watched it "live" back in the day and would say I would certainly give it a shot. After the series ended I eventually re-watched the first season and it was surprising to me how the show descended into cartoon toward the end, especially compared with the realism of the first season. If you are into violence and gore for its own sake, it's a pretty entertaining show throughout its run, but if you're expecting HBO "quality" in terms of complex characters and smart writing, it goes south after the first season or so.
Watch The Wire instead.
The series is full of holes.
I tried to watch The Wire, but it didnt grab my attention
It's a campy mess but it's mostly entertaining. Lots of DL faves including BD Wong, Betty Buckley, and the ever-in-style Meloni.
Oh and then there's Harold Perrineau Jr. commenting on the action in the style of slam poetry...
Most people's opinions are worth hearing, but why not just watch the first couple of episodes and see for yourself?
My personal favorite.
OZ was my introduction to HBO drama and a key reason why I subscribed to the channel over a decade ago. It was transformational in its story-telling, and I feel that its grittiness led to other shows like The Wire and Deadwood.
I do not like it as much as SFU or the Wire, but it still remains better than most of the schlock on the major TV channels.
Now I find it fun to see the actors from OZ reappear on other NBC shows (especially the procedurals).
I loved it, but the old age drug bit was silly.
First three seasons are riveting, the next less so
Perrineau's narration always drove me to distraction, it was the weak link of the series.
Come (or CUM) for the nudity, stay for the drama.
Awesome show, I never missed an episode when it aired. Damn, it was brilliant. Take big Broadway stars like Betty Buckley, BD Wong, Rita Moreno and Patti LuPone and pepper their storylines amongst scorching hot prison sex and that was OZ.
I honestly couldn't imagine a straight man watching this show. It seemed tailor made to suit gays of all tastes.
And it still was a well-written, very exciting show. I'm jealous of OP for discovering OZ for the first time.
No. Invest that time in learning to proofread headlines.
And R18, "come" is spelled C-O-M-E, regardless of the usage. It's not considered a pun, outside the schoolyard.
The SNL "Oz" sketch with Jerry Seinfeld was hilarious.
While waiting for the Jerry Seinfeld clip to be linked to...I share this.
Oh odds never did favor the tin man
And the heart he never has
And claws never was a reason
Or the tropic of sir galahad
So please believe in me
