They found a location that better suited their needs? Why the fuck do you care?
They had been at Hyatt for a long time. That is a harsh response R1. Does the post upset you?
I would imagine that the smell of body odor (pardon me, mansmells) gets old for a nice hotel after a couple of years.
Holy Shit, they're holding it at a fucking Marriott!
The events seem scaled down also. I'm headed there in May but does not look like as interesting as past years.
They were at the Palmer House for awhile.
There's something deeply wrong about R1's level of anger.
Very much so r7. He must hate leather.
It hasn't been any good in years. Also they smoke and it's too costly for hotels to clean up after all that smoke.
And then who wants the bed bugs, AIDS and all the other infestations 'mos bring.
I'm sure the powers-that-be at IML will say they negotiated a better deal (for them, anyway), the Hyatt and/or Palmer House was committed to another event, blah, blah, blah. But interesting that R5 says it's not as "interesting as past years" and R9 concurs that it hasn't been "any good in years" (despite going on to make an ass of himself). I was willing to pay exorbitant room rates for a weekend in downtown Chicago that historically saw little business. I was happy to fork over $12 for a bottle of beer in the lobby bar. It was a fun and unique experience.
IML lost my business when they unilaterally decided to be the defenders of condoms and banished all the bareback porn producers and any other bb-adjacent businesses (like BarebackRT) from the Leather Market. For an organization that was founded out of a need for our community to come together and support one another, it was rather ironic for Chuck Renslow and crew to exclude a significant proportion of the community, particularly given Chuck's ownership of Man's Country, one of Chicago's biggest if not the biggest gay bath houses. I suppose since then Chuck has been crawling around on his hands and knees patrolling condom usage in his den of inequity, no?
Since they ejected many of their long-time supporters, I've heard from many attendees that IML isn't the same. Given that so many leathermen engage in aggressive sex and there is a high coincidence of HIV+ population and IML attendance, it was pretty much a slap in their faces that they were told they weren't welcome unless they prescribe to the condom mantra. The funny part was that the whole controversy had died down. The sad part was that IML's organizers had an opportunity to reach out to HIV- men and educate them, but instead chose to divide the community and participate in the heads-in-the-sand approach to HIV education. I guess if there wasn't any bb porn being sold in the leathermarket, there wouldn't be any barebacking going on at IML.
As a friend who works in porn said when this came down, nobody oppresses like the oppressed.
But now, at the Marriott? Good lord, do these people have no shame? Do they not know that the Marriott corporation is one of the biggest anti-gay organizations in the country? Do they not know Mitt Romney sits on their board? Why are they -- IML producers -- funding hatred towards our community?
What's "ironic" about coming to your senses?
He ran a bathhouse where people had sex. Did they give out condoms when it was known to help prevent HIV?
Do you love to watch bareback videos? Do you think it leads to unsafe behavior?
What is ironic is the idea of HIV transmission being focused on butt sex, when tattoos and bloodletting and other SM practices may do the same.
"den of inequity"
Banning anything bareback is about rebranding the gay S&M/Leather community.
The Palmer House? Where my great grandmother and her friends went for Thanksgiving Buffet? The PH is an old lady hotel.
Is there some connection between leather daddies and old women?
the decor, sweetie! The decor!!
R10 is why I hate us.
Coming to their senses, R11? Really? It wasn't like the AIDs crisis had been raging for over 20 years when IML made their decision... oh wait, it had. I suppose R16 will say "better late than never" as though adult men aren't capable of making decisions on their own. Nobody forces IML attendees to wander the leathermarket, let alone buy bb videos. But go ahead and hate your own, it's your prerogative.
To answer your question, R11, yes, I do prefer bb videos. I also prefer action-adventure movies, but have yet to blow anything up, drive 120mph through rush-hour traffic, or bed either of the Hemsworth brothers. It's a tired old canard that gay men are too stupid to discern between fantasy and reality. Nevertheless, I agree, it's quite shortsighted to focus HIV transmission risk on buttsex at the expense of every other STD-transmittable activity (which includes sucking, rimming and everything else in the IML-approved genre). And I say this from experience.
Interesting, R13. It hadn't occurred to me that the leather community was trying to rebrand. Unfortunate that their rebranding effort seems to be headed towards self-hatred as evidenced by IML's choice of host hotel. I hope all of this year's attendees understand that with every dollar they spend that weekend they're helping spread bigotry and homophobia. And let me be clear up front: the Marriott corporation is Mormon owned and controlled, and gave heavily to enact Prop. 8. Marriott puts a happy face on their hotels and says they support equality, happily takes your gay dollars, and turns around and works behind the scenes and in the background, through various front groups (NOM, anyone?) to deny us our rights.
To end on a note of levity, it was always quite amusing when IML was at the quintessential old lady Palmer House, especially when they covered the entire lobby in plastic. I asked the front desk people checking in one year how they felt about the IML crowd, and they either smiled and said we were totally welcome (and I'll see you later...) or were happy to make the $$ that we were freely spending in their venue. The maid who took care of my room one year told me she loved us because we didn't bring children and were good tippers. Go figure. And finally, the architecture of the Palmer House lent itself to some very interesting window viewing... who needs porn when live shows were going on all night?
Chuck Renslow is still alive??????
When I was in school in the mid-seventies, I went into the Gold Coast, his bar in Chicago (or one of them; I didn't pay much attention to bar ownership). He was old then -- admittedly, my perspective was that of a 21 year old, but even so.... I have now looked him up, and he was born in the 20's, which puts him at 84 or more. Well, more power to him, I suppose.
The staff at the Hyatt loved this event. It was violence free and gave them more business than usual. The waitresses stated that they made more $$. I'm sure though they were booted since they booked a hotel that is smaller. They have to sue 2 hotels but the second is not only for this event.
