Let's make a list of the really good acting turns that couldn't win for various reasons but gave the actor enough Actor cred to win later on for a lesser performance. Maybe the good part wasn't big enough, or the movie was too controversial, or it was just up against something too popular. I'll start: Tommy Lees Jones was awarded for The Fugitive but he really won because of his parts in JFK and Lonesome Dove (JFK was too controversial and LD was a tv movie.) Christopher Waltz was awarded for DJango but he really won it for Unglorious Bastards. Al Pacino was awarded for Scent of A Woman but really won if for Godfather I & II
