During his now famous filibuster, Senator Rand Paul made some claims which do not hold up to the facts. One of the most notable ones latched onto by right-wing pundits and ill-educated “paulbots” was that Hitler was elected democratically. Here is video of Senator Paul making the claim: There is just one gaping hole in this: Hitler was never elected democratically. In fact, he lost his election bid to Paul von Hindenburg, getting only 30% of the vote in the election. He did however attain the position of Chancellor, a symbolic office originally created for Otto von Bismarck in 1867 as a ceremonial title. The Chancellorship was little more than a title, and there had been 12 chancellors before Hitler took office during the Weimar Republic which was only 13-years-old at the time. However, the Nazi party in the Reichstag had influence, although it was not a majority. After losing badly at the polls in November of 1932, the Nazi party formed a coalition with the conservative German National People’s Party (DNVP) which put Hitler in the Chancellorship with DNVP leader Franz von Papen as his Vice Chancellor. (Unless you consider killing all your political opponents then claiming their votes for yourself 'winning' an election.)
