I spoke fluent German with no American accent as a high school exchange student in the 80s. However, the language has changed over the past 30 years, with all sorts of tech and Internet vocabulary, and I'm a bit lost when it comes to that stuff in German now. In general, I'm not especially proficient at discussing anything more sophisticated than a 16-year-old would talk about, though I can still read and understand perfectly.

I fell in love with Hong Kong cinema and bought a Teach Yourself Cantonese book and CD set. Now I can actually understand much of the dialogue in HK movies, though I can't really speak it and sure as hell can't read it.
