What are some unsolved mysteries in your life?

My mother has a lo to emotional and psychological problems that I believe stem from her relationship with her ex-boyfriend who I have never met and never talked about and whose existence I only knew of from my father.

From the time I was 8 to 11ish my mom decided she didn't want to be married o have kids and would spend her home time on the living room couch under a itchy wool blanket. Then she snapped out if it. Why? Why did she snap out of it? Did she realize how bad an effect it would have on her youngest three children?
My aunt disappeared. All her clothes and money were in her apt. Just gone.
A pint of ice cream just disappeared. I can't imagine what happened to it. Actually, this is not the first time that it has happened.

I don't look like anyone else in my family. My tastes, interests, personality, etc, have led everyone in my life to question if I was adopted (including me.) From about aged 4, my mother started calling me "the alien child." The thought of my ultra-conservative mother having an affair is laughable, so that couldn't be the answer, even though one of my older sister used to speculate that that was the answer.
Why hasn't my cat gotten any better at catching the Temptations treats I throw to him? He puts both paws up in an attempt to catch them, but the times he is able to do so are random and few. You think he'd improve. He makes me throw them every day.

How did my great great grandmother come up with using a rabid monkey as a murder weapon?

My grandmother's oldest brother was lynched. Nobody in the family knew about it until she developed dementia at 100 and semi-raved about it. She was no older than 8-10 years at the time. They were very close, the only children of my Great Grandma Charlotte's first marriage. He came to her secretly at her stepfather's house to say goodbye -- he had to go on the run. Oh, how she wept, this always strong, composed, serene woman -- like it happened the day before. It was heartbreaking to see her. She died at 102, in 2004, without ever mentioning it again. I've done the research, even contacted Tuskegee University, which has the world's largest lynching archives, and can find only one case on record that matches up with names, possible dates, and location. But there are no details.

When I was 14 I was babysitting at a friends house. A man let himself into the apartment with his key. He wore a suit, a black overcoat, hat and carried a briefcase. He went upstairs and into a locked room. He came downstairs a few minutes later and left. When I broke into the locked room, there was only a file cabinet and a phone. What was the deal?

My dad was abandoned by my grandfather when he was 10 years old, leaving him on his own in post-war NYC. (no worries, he was adopted by a wealthy family). The old fuck died shortly thereafter apparently. But my grandfather was from England and had 10 brothers and sisters. All of them had kids. And so on and so on I would imagine. I would love to have an idea who that side of the family is. I'm sure I have dozens of distant cousins, many with my last name, over across the pond. I know, quaint by comparison. But still

I think there must be a way to look up distant family. I was just looking around the net one day and came on a picture of my father and most of his family. He was three at the time of the piture. I had never seen a picture of my grandparents and they had died before I was born.

It really happened, R26. The name and age of the lynched young man I located in the archives matches up with the name/birth year of my late great-uncle, written in a family Bible. My Grandma just didn't talk about the long-ago past, ever. Great Uncle William was lynched more than 50 miles from his home county. In 1911, that was really far. Whether he'd run that far and was caught there, or was transported there by his killers, is unknown. IIRC, he was only 19 years old.
I'd love to know why my grandfather distanced himself my his siblings who all came over from SIcily in the early 1900s. When I was a child I overheard conversations about cousins and rich relatives in the well to do suburbs near where I grew up. A couple of years ago when my mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer I tried to get more information from her and she wouldn't talk about it. I started digging online and ended up connecting with a second cousin on Ancestry and found out that these siblings turned the family business into a multinational corporation while my mother and her sisters grew up in poverty. My cousin had no idea what the story was. All the elder relatives are dead. She hooked me up with photos and copies of his birth certificate and other documents. I'll probably never know what happened, but to me it's a fascinating mystery.
A very bizarre family that I certainly think is mysterious. A newspaper columnist grandfather who supposedly died of botulism from homemade hooch, and kept writing columns as he was dying. A great uncle who lost part of the family homestead in a card game, was later shot dead in the same bar by a perp who fled and was never caught. My other grandfather's left arm was torn completely off at his job 30 miles from town, he applied a tourniquet to the stump, loaded wife and kids into the car and drove to the hospital. He expired from the flu not long after. Murders: elderly 'Aunt' S. was found in an irrigation canal, her husband the prime suspect but not charged. A sibling (now deceased), who became close to the husband, I believe was checked out by the cops in two local deaths...a murder and the other one unexplained. Bad karma, bad blood and bad genetics, I think.
That is fascinating and very sad, R28. So your grandfather had NO contact at all with his siblings, ever? I wonder if the break happened on the voyage here, or back in Sicily? Where did he fall in the sibling order? It must have galled him not to give your mom and aunt the same life his nieces and nephews had.
