Openly Gay Mayoral Candidate Was Beaten, Set On Fire And Dumped Near A River

The family of Marco McMillian, a 33 year-old openly gay candidate for mayor of Clarksdale, Mississippi released a statement yesterday saying that he was beaten and set on fire before his lifeless body was dumped near a river. Last Thursday, police arrested a 22-year old man who, like McMillian, is African-American and charged him with the mayoral candidate’s murder. Although the motive for the murder remains unknown, the circumstances of the murder suggest a possible anti-gay hate crime. According to the family, “[w]e feel this was not a random act of violence based on the condition of the body when it was found.”

• It's beyond me, op, this crime is likely the work of racist, homophobic cowards. I haven't seen any updates, ie, police investigation etc... The Mississippi connection is frightening, is being covered up?

• Mississippi Rep. Bennie Thompson said on Wednesday that he wants the FBI to get involved in an investigation of the death of Marco McMillian, who was a candidate for mayor in Clarksdale. "If another set of eyes looking at it would provide additional information, I think it would be helpful to the McMillian family," Thompson told the Associated Press. McMillian's campaign described him as one of the first viable openly gay candidates for public office in Mississippi. That distinction naturally raises questions about whether his sexual orientation and high profile could have motivated his murder.  Making the case even more disturbing is his family's description of the condition of how he was killed: "His body was found on Wednesday, February 26, 2013, beaten, dragged and burned (set afire)," they said in a statement released March 4. While Mississippi's hate-crime law covers acts of violence motivated by a victim's race, federal hate-crime laws would address those motivated by sexual orientation

• Another, younger black man was arrested and charged with murder after he wrecked McMillian's SUV. What indication is there that this is a hate crime or racist in ay way? I am surprised that thinkprogress hasn't published a correction. Just joking....it isn't like thinkprogress is anything close to being a journalist with integrity
