• The Quigley box office poll would show that the top male and top female stars during that period were, respectively, probably Shirley Temple and John Wayne, if you averaged out people's appearances at the top of those polls over that time period. Followed closely by Marie Dressler and Bing Crosby. If you extended the time period to 1964, you'd add Rock Hudson and Doris Day.
