The polarities of DataLounge.
I've been hanging here for about eight years and I'm surprised by the extreme differences among us.
Some of you guys seem like traveling Capotes, who know Europe in detail and attended boarding schools. Some of you seem like sweet white trash kids who grew up on Pop-tarts and Chef Boyardee.
Most of you/us seem a little mentally unstable, but there are a few reliable, avuncular voices who stop us from jumping out the window.
- The avuncular ones are the worst... They have the most advanced dementia.
- Fuck you, R2
Uncle%20Bottom
- DL polarities:
Madonna fans vs. Janet fans
Anderson Cooper fans vs. Anderson Cooper haters
Freddie Smith is Fat vs. Freddie Smith is a normal sized guy
All good looking actors are gay vs. Some good looking actors are gay, some are straight
New York vs. Everywhere else
UVA rules vs. UVA drools
Renters vs. Owners
Barebackers vs. Condom Only
Any others?
- Good list, R3, but you forgot Duke's mayonnaise vs. that tacky, bottom-shelf Hellman's crap.
- Barebackers vs. Condom Only vs. Oral Only
Trichotomy
- Gay for Pay for Vs No such thing

- Many of the gays who post here are a bit unhinged and a fair amount are not well educated. So many of the grammar and spelling errors I used to think were on purpose and done with a wink. I don't think that any longer. There are some scary, angry people who post here, too. They pick fights and say mean-spirited things that aren't funny. Occasionally there are like-minded posters who are refreshing and fun. I have been coming here for about eight years and it is these avuncular voices that keep me coming back, too.
- I think the nasty people are rarer than most people think. They just stand out more.
You can have a seventy post thread and just one person being a bitch and if it's directed at you, that's what you remember.
- OP and R7,
please give us some examples.
- The "DataLounge used to be better" group vs the "You're imagining a false past" faction.
- OP, which ones do you think are avuncular and which mentally unstable?
- There are the affected snobs and the genuine snobs.
- R10 is so right!
The common argument made by these people: DL was so much better so many years ago!
- I don't think there are a lot of flamers here, but you get a few like that Janbot who flames and flames and flames and flames and never runs out of oxygen who seems to ruin it all for the rest of us. Can't we cut her off somehow?
- Cut vs Uncut
Bisexual vs No-such-thing
Death vs Afterlife
Sex-negative vs Ho
Streep Troll vs Everyone
PPSM vs Everyone
- People think the grammar and spelling is poor on this site, but I can assure you that I frequent a website for English teachers which is a complete grammatical disaster.
At least we have our 'Oh dear' troll to keep us in line.
principal/principle
- femmes vs ugly, vulgar bulldykes
carnivores vs the insane
- [quote]a fair amount are not well educated.
Even remedial English students know that it's a "fair number."

I had never heard of DL before 4 months ago, so I don't know the long history or some of the inside stuff, but it seems pretty silly yet important to people.
There are many more than a few angry hostile and very contemptuous posters. The two line, going for wit or the quick put down posters seem to be in the majority. Too long on the computer. What is the point if you have nothing to say or are only interested in others to disagree with them or correct them?
There are some cool and smart and very funny people but there is a pretty nasty edge on most any thread that is defended as pointless bitchery. It is something different than that.
I am a not too dumb guy, but overall I am surprised by the embedded misogyny and racism that exists out here, if not so much the man on man hate. A lot of fragile egos too.
So far the most outstanding polarities would be, the fanatics (of film music movies and trivia) vs. the phony seen it all, grow up and shut the fuck up tough guys.
The most noticeable common personality trait is a hyphenated internal polarity.
Passive-Aggressive.
I%20think%20it%20is%20addictive
- Tops/Bottoms vs. Versatile are always fun.
Though back in the day, nothing beat a good masculine gay vs. effem inate gay thread.
- Whatever.
- Hillary vs Obama supporters was also pretty polarizing.
Anonymous
- The sudden insurge of GOP straights is worse than anything.
- Don't forget that the majority of gay men here HATE women, and have no problem putting that emotion on display for all to see. If anyone here spoke even vaguely about hating members of minority races they way they speak about women, they would have been kicked off DL a long time ago. But somehow, women are different; it's ok to verbally abuse women here.
And, as in R17's comment, all lesbians are either femmes (somehow smarter and prettier than all other lesbians) and "ugly, vulgar bulldykes."
R17, do you have magical powers we don't know about? Can you see what people on this board look like?
a%20lesbian%2C%20of%20course
- R24 Wait. Gays become dramatic when discriminated or hated but hate women? Do you mean envy?
- OP has been here long enough to understand how to troll.
Nothing more, nothing less. This is a tired DL meme, a troll attempting to deconstruct and break it all down for us.. Meanwhile, bet your last dollar that the OP is one who happily, on any given days, trolls and stirs shit.
DL%20Oldtimer
- Glory Hole Hunters vs Newly Reborn Sex Negative Monogamists
Sane people vs Freepers
Ms Brenda Dickson vs Mrs Patrick Campbell
Carlivati vs Guza
Gwyneth Paltrow is a entitled cunt vs Gwyneth Paltrow is an even bigger cunt than that
Who is gayer: Joan Travolta or Tammy Cruise?
R4 Problem with Duke is that sell that shit in tacky discount stores,darling......
- Face it OP, chat boards have always attracted a wide range of personalities, from good to bad. The worst ones are those who live on chat boards because they don't possess the ability to interact with other human beings face to face. If a chat board is your only social outlet, you're, in a word, "fucked up".
- ^^ That was two words.
- You are very right. Even on a thread like posting favourite songs there is a distinct divide between sophisticated European pop and American stadium rock. Perhaps the more intelligent gays have a wider grasp of art and culture and literature as well as movies and music, rather than the younger generation who now have no interest in anything from before their own era ...
- [quote]Madonna fans vs. Janet fans
I am in neither camp, I don't care for either of those cunts.
- You can't leave the bodies up there vs it's cold and I can't breathe and I want to come down NOW.
- There are also too many white collar ReThugs posting here or they could simply be trolls planted by the Tea Party to infiltrate gay websites.
I find it hard to be believe that so many gay men could be so clueless, that they'd actually be proud to be ReThugs!
If they are ReThugs, I'm assuming many of them are closeted, especially those working in high paying jobs in finance. They are probably the same guys posting here constantly about their ongoing affairs with married men!
- I fuck married men, but not a Republican. Back to the drawing board.
- Straight guys really dig the homosex vs. those who know better.
Porn is a glamorous and lucrative career vs. those who know better.
Porn addicts who write weepy eulogies to dead porn stars and hustlers vs. people who have lives.
- We hate the lesbians vs. We love the lesbians
- Mike Branson, Esq. vs. Mike Branson, Would you like fries with your hamburger?
- I've stopped using my author ID, I post less and I have stopped relating things that I know rather directly. After being called a liar, among many other things over and over- it became no fun. You internalize those kinds of things after a while. DL is full of very angry and rather stupid posters. Oh there are some good ones- but the nasty ones take over threads all the time.
- Ephebophiles vs. Traumatized Abuse Victims
- cak vs. graxy.
- [quote]Some of you guys seem like traveling Capotes, who know Europe in detail
Just because someone can reply to questions about Europe doesn't mean he/she is like a traveling Capote. I had a job that took me to six continents so it's not like I was some social butterfly flitting around to jet-set parties. I was there to work. With a keen interest in culture, history and archaeology, I used off-work hours to learn.
There are probably others with similar backgrounds who reply here. One day they could reply as Anonymous to something about Australia and another day, something about Italy.
- Beans v. Rice
- 'Sex-positive' whores with AIDS vs. the well-adjusted

- [R38] is the most accurate statement on what has occurred here in the last four years. Far too many really stupid, really idiotic, really badly educated assholes who are morons, yet proud.
The narrowness of the 'average' poster here now, in experience, sensibility, interest makes this board worth far less than it was a decade ago.
It is not that there wasn't a lot of silly, crazy and dumb carrying on then; it's that those were not the dominant qualities of this place. The idiotic celebrity worship here now, without irony, the religious fools and nut cases, the "this is TODAY and you are worthless because you might be forty (!) or even worse fifty or -- horrible!!! -- older" attitude has made this a location of goons and fools.
Those who exalt "today's gay" do so in a stupid and shallow way; there is no debate, there are no conversations, there is no shared experience. I look in once and while and it keeps getting dumber, coarser, more ignorant. Occasionally a thread will bring out what I suspect are the surviving old timers and one gets a sense of how well informed many people were here, once upon a time, how open to many different kinds of experience. And how funny. But the place has now become mostly a toilet full of moldering shits, who should be flushed, but apparently keep DL going.
- R47 must be an elder gay (just kidding!)
- [quote]Occasionally a thread will bring out what I suspect are the surviving old timers and one gets a sense of how well informed many people were here, once upon a time, how open to many different kinds of experience. And how funny.
"This . did . not . happen!" is one reason for the DL plunge from being a great forum.
- Theys my favorites too!!
- Agree with R7!
His R43 not so much.
R38 seems to tell the story of Internet forums.
Edga
- "surviving old timers"
Also known as 'get off my lawn!'...
- I pushed all the avuncular ones out the window so the intolerable little cuntlets here will not be impeded from undertaking their own leaps. Suicide is about the only real action any of the idiots here under 40 seem capable of managing, although one expects they'll miss the window the first couple of times.
By the way, OP, "most of you/us seem a little mentally unstable" in itself offers proof of your statement, as far as it applies to you.
- The grammar trolls are obnoxious and often derail good threads with their bullshit nitpicking. Have any of these trolls ever perused any other online message board? Datalounge is practically reads like an Oxford academic journal compared to the nightmarish spelling/grammar on most other message boards. At least we spell out full words and sentences and don't use words like "lyk", "luv" and "lolcats!".
- I wish we could have decent debates and conversations without some deranged troll trying to brow beat the opposition into submission. Internet bullies are quite possibly the least interesting entities on the planet.
- Bread: frozen vs. refrigerated.
Sponge: microwave vs. filthy people.
Sinks: Pissing vs. Elvis bidet.
Dead Cheerleaders: Flaming Spirit Fingers vs. How Dare You!
- Polarities are not unique to DL. People live wildly different lives with wildly different thoughts, opinions and perceptions.
- Cunt dick ass pussy poppers vaginal tears.
- Mussey Vs Mangina
The%20age%20old%20question
- it's really readers vs non-readers
- The people who make everything from scratch vs. the people who actually have lives.
- R53's tiara is oh-so-shiny.
- The Assimilationists vs the Separatists.
To me, this is one of the more fascinating undercurrents of this board because it very much resembles the real life struggle in the "community" that's taking place right now.
Do we try to blend into straight society and get them to accept us as their equals or do we fight against the system, forge our own way and try to retain our own unique culture?

- [quote] Datalounge is [sic] practically reads like an Oxford academic journal compared to the nightmarish spelling/grammar on most other message boards.
You can thank the work of the "obnoxious grammar trolls" for that, R54. Do you think people just spontaneously use full sentences and proper spelling and punctuation at DL? It's a result of 15 years of berating people who are too lazy to write properly.
[quote]The narrowness of the 'average' poster here now, in experience, sensibility, interest makes this board worth far less than it was a decade ago.
This cannot be repeated enough. Can it be placed in the sidebar?
- I don't agree, R52. I, for one, have learned a great deal on DL this past year.
I've learned that Janet Jackson is worth 150 million dollars, has 5 Billboard Awards, was the biggest selling tour in 1492, swam the English Channel with her eyes closed, likes t shave her pussy and can open hand-slap 14 year old girls.
Oh, and she also has a People's Choice award. That is the most important award, because it comes from the people.
