Do you think straights are tired of hearing about the gays?
Or are they titillated by this fascinating new topic coming at them?
The media has seized upon us as one of the last provocative, hot button issues. Everyday it's 'gay athletes', 'gay marriage', 'gay adoption'. I have to admit, I'm a little saturated on the issue myself (though I'm old enough to find it amusing, because when I was growing up it was a taboo subject everywhere... that is, until AIDS).

If the federal civil rights laws were extended to the gay community there would be no need for further discussion.
- Yes they're tired, and after they give us our rights, we'll be happy to shut up.
- Maybe but I'm sure whites were tired of hearing about the Negroes during their civil rights movement.
- When I used to visit America (80s & 90s) I was amazed how much they talk about us in the media.
I remember having to sit through something on TV called 'If Your Kid Is Gay' with my mother and step father.
I don't think America is going to lose its 'gay' obsession/preoccupation any time soon.

- R1 R2 are you kidding!? Do you live in a cave? We will never shut up. And yes, I believe they are, but since the "viral" trends in our direction presently, they're stuck with us. It Won't Last, you can be sure of that.
- [quote] Do you think straights are tired of hearing about the gays?
Yes, especially homophobes.
- I think a lot of gay talk makes even open-minded straight people queasy.
- R2 Bingo!
- I dunno if your perception is right on. Maybe you are all focused on the gays but the straights aren't.
I'm a flexible woman and I will admit that I come to datalounge to get my fix of gay when I find there isn't enough in the mainstream. Trust me when you aren't in it, your world is not saturated with the gays.
- Yes.
I support their rights, and I believe they should be treated as equals.I do believe you deserve the same rights as myself, and your family deserves the same rights as myself.
I do not believe being gay is a choice, nor an 'act of sin' as many of my fellow christians deem it, believeing it is a sexual past time.
But I am tired of the whining, and I am tired of the attitude now that if you are gay you deserve a medal. I am straight and further the human race. I do not get a parade that blocks most of the streets in NYC and crams the subways. So I do not see why you should get a parade because you like to wear clothing not normally assigned to your gender, or love someone of the same sex.
I do care about equal treatment. But I don't care about what you do in your free time, or hell even your sexuality.
- You mean like you, r3? I love how people like you always act like all other prejudice is in the past.
- I'm sick of hearing about straight people.
- I'm straight and I'm not tired of it. Freedom from oppression and shame for any group of people that experiences unjust discrimination is to the benefit of everyone. I'm kind of being a bit wordy there, but I hope I'm understandable.
- Those who don't believe in equal rights probably are tired of it. The rest of us aren't.
- "I am straight and further the human race".
Amazing. I'm not sure which is more impressive, the incredible sacrifice you are making or the exemplary job you are doing. Either way, carry on deluded, narcissistic breeder piece of shit.
- Neither. Most are indifferent and that's the REAL reason gay rights are still not fully realized. People are not willing to vote against the things that are important to them personally in order to support gay rights. They may not be homophobic and they may strongly support the right for gays to marry, etc.......but they just don't care enough to sacrifice something they want for themselves to achieve it. They will vote for the candidates who best represent THEIR interests.
It's human nature and you all do the exact same thing.
- I am gay and I have a biological daughter. GIVE me that damn medal now
- Maybe ten years ago as part of their Diversity program, The New York Times agreed to publish a certain number of pro-gay stories each week. A straight friend noticed and said "isn't this overkill?"
