What are things/materials you've kept for a long time?

I bought some crayola markers at the beginning of grade 9 and I still have them 8 years later. Some of the markers have been used and are dead but the majority of the markers are not.

• Why are you keeping the dead markers?

• R2, because my dad I'd lose them in a week and I've proved him wrong. I kept it for 8 years and still going.

• I noticed that two of the three things (a wooden bowl and a letter opener) that I made in JrHi Shop in 1958 are still in my kitchen. I can't find the third thing (a metal artsy project.)

• I'm a pack rat/hoarder so I have basically everything that was moderately important in my life at some point saved somewhere. Most of my toys from childhood, old 5 inch floppy disks with high school papers saved on them, unsent love letters to my first college crush, a box full of VHS tapes, regular and porn. An eight-year old box of markers is nothing.

• I have my Lincoln Logs, Matchbox cars, and Legos all stored away. Don't know why...

• Wacky Packs -- anyone remember those? They were stickers of product spoofs - Duck-0 cement, Aurmor hot dogs, etc. Mad-magazine type humor. While going through some old boxes at my father's house, several years ago, I happened upon about 20 of them that I had apparently saved... and couldn't stop laughing! I slapped those stickers on everything -- notebooks, the inside of my closet doors -- so clearly, these were duplicates that I decided to save, for some reason. And I was so glad that I did! Many have 1975 &76 copyright dates on them! Fun slice of my childhood. :-)

• I have a whole warehouse full of things I've kept for a lifetime including things I inherited (furniture, art pieces, etc). But of all the things I have kept, my most treasured are toys from my childhood. When I was young (in the 50's) whenever I would buy a toy for myself I'd many times buy 2 if it was something I really liked. Back then $1.00 would buy you some wonderful things. One would be to play with, and one would go in my treasure box, a large cedar chest long since filled to the brim with all those extra toys, and other treasured mementos from my childhood. That chest is buried in the bowels of the warehouse and I haven't opened it since 1995. It's for my 13 year old godson's future children.

• I only have one thing. An ashtray I made for my mom in 1962.

• OP, I hope that you develop some depth between now and your old age. Because otherwise, if you don't go senile, you're screwed.

• The combition lock from junior high school PE locker. It's at least 38 years old and still works fine. Wonder if I kept it because I associate it with adolescent sexuality?

• I have a coffee cup a fraternity brother gave me the year we were "discovering" each other - he was the first guy I ever went to bed with. Still my favorite cup.
