Why is there so much hostility towards fatties in our society?

I looked at my 6th grade panorama picture and there were two fat (by today's standards) kids. And mind you, this was 1996 California.
I looked at my nephew's similar panorama picture (2012) and holy crap, it looks at least 50/50.
Now, there's no reason to hate on the fat kids, but something is seriously wrong if there is such a difference between kids (and all people) in 1996 vs. now.
