Is everybody aware of the "deep web" but me?
I feel like an idiot for not having heard of this until this week. Sounds mysterious and a bit scary. I guess it's the internet equivalent of shortwave radio. Has anyone here explored this part of the web? What have you found?
http%3A//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_Web
Never%20leaves%20Datalounge- Are you surprised that life exists outside of Facebook?
- Must be the same weird feeling ( no not in my pants) we got when we discovered the ACLU boards hidden deep in the recesses of vintage AOL or the ALT boards ..only Jeesuz knows how we accessed those fuckers
Cobain
- R2 It's like when I discovered Pr0n on usenet and could use FreeAgent to connect file segments to download a 5 minute clip in only 2 hours.
- Why is this scary?
- but what does one find there? and why are there web pages that are inaccessible? what does it serve?
- Checked it out last year using Tor browser. Lots of porn, lot of drug deals, lot of gore pics. Not that scary for veteran/diehard web surfers who've seen it all already on the regular web. Also, it's not like regular web surfing; you pretty much have to know ahead of time where to go as "deep web" sites aren't indexed. So you kind of have to be in the know a bit beforehand, otherwise you won't have any idea where to go.
- I don't have any idea what you're talking about and I don't want to know.
- Link, R6?
- Never heard of it...
- Better porn down there?
- R8 you need the program TOR to be able to access it, and the google search for "hidden wiki" (it may be called something different, I forgot) which will give you a link to a page that lists some deep web pages. It's actually not that interesting and you'll probably be bored with it after a few minutes. You'll just find wannabe hackers, expensive drugs, scammers claiming they are assassins, and sadly cp.
- WHat kind of drugs? What is cp?
- cp = child pornography
Pope%20ex-Benedict
- I just learned something new. It doesn't sound very different from the traditional web, though... Do the pages have an unusual appearance?
- I'm pretty sure you can get any kind of drug. It's basically like eBay only for drugs, so everything is by an individual seller. I checked it out and I saw weed and coke, but I'm not sure I would ever buy it from them. However, I've seen testimonials for it on YouTube - just search the Silk Road marketplace
- They look like any website you can find on google (they aren't supper supper nice, just basic HTML). The only difference is that the URL is something like: irjdujsufrjdygshrdanhagsy.onion
- R14, no the pages look the same.
- R8, do what R11 said.
r6
- Interesting..thanks r15 and whoever told me what cp was. I felt like an idiot not knowing but when I saw the definition I didn't feel so bad.
- I'm curious but too scared to check it out.
I don't want to look at child porn, but I think my curiosity would force me too, and then I'd get creeped out, sad and depressed. It's just too disturbing.
Ill pass.

You find a lot of illegal activity.
Also, using Tor browser covers your Interner foot prints a bit and you can't be tracked as well.
People living in countries with tightly controlled Internet access use Tor to avoid government scrutiny.
Drug dealers and buyers, and child porn douchebags, an anyone else engaged in illicit activity, also use Tor for the same reasons - less risk of getting caught.
So there are legitimate reasons for it and illicit ones too.

- I agree r20, I also may be forced to order some blow and that wouldn't be good either. Jeez, who brought this up?
freak
- R21 it is actually possible to track whoever is using TOR they just don't really care
- So r21, if someone had this TOR thing it would be assumed it was for nefarious reasons, right? Sounds like a bad thing to even have at your house...yikes.
- I will stay away from the Deep Web. I'm sure they would whip me and beat me and make me write bad checks.

I never said you can't be tracked.
- Tor is for CP. Don't encourage homosexuals to be even more perverted.
- "even more perverted"?
- the deep web are parts of the web that aren't indexed, by google for instance. this used to, but no longer includes things like facebook and twitter.
TOR and other proxying systems, as well as the US Military's domain .mil are the "darknet".
the deep web isn't accessible by search engines, the dark net isn't openly accessible by a random computer on the internet.

- I thought Chris Hemsworth was great. His face didn't look right (too squinty) but otherwise he was like a comic book come to life. Natalie Portman was miscasted though.
