Jamie Lee Curtis: "And the Oscar goes to... hell."
So, I have waited, and tried to communicate this privately, but then I started getting forwarded emails from the Academy of rave reviews of last weekend's disturbing Oscar show. Interesting that they didn't forward any of the numerous negative reviews, such as in The New Yorker and Vanity Fair.
I knew who Seth MacFarlane was. My teenage son is a big fan. I knew what to expect. I have been the butt of his humor. I have survived his cruel, cheap jokes.
I was offended last week. As an Academy member, as the child of former Academy members and as a woman, I expected more from the best that the movie business has to offer. The Oscars are about honoring art and artists. It is not supposed to be a cheesy vaudeville show.
The "boob" song, as it will be known in perpetuity, may go down as the highest-rated Oscar number in history, but at what cost? I'm sure public executions would get big ratings too, but is that what the Oscars are truly about? Ratings? When did they turn into a "roast"? At least at a roast you know what's in store. What if actors and actresses stopped attending the Oscars because it was deemed open session to ridicule and parody them? Would the Academy be so cavalier then?
I am an actress who has bared her breasts in films to satisfy the requirement of the role I was asked to do -- lucky to do, for in my case, those films were significant in my career. I didn't like doing it. I didn't ask if I could do them topless. I did what was asked of me for the part I was playing. Mostly asked by men.
I know many may snicker at the now-aging, adult, almost grandma-like woman I am today, looking back and decrying my youthful exploitation, and say it's hard for me to cry foul when my body was my stock and trade.
I recently saw On The Waterfront where Terry Malloy, whose stock and trade was violence, made the right choice and informed on the Mob.
I was offended by the Oscar show.
I am sorry that this is what we are talking about and not Argo's lovely win or Jennifer's amazing performance or Daniel's eloquence and humor and grace or the fallout from the sequester.
What we will be talking about is Seth's lack of class and a 14-year-old boy's derogatory word for one of the most beautiful, motherly and literally nurturing parts of the female form.
I dreamed a dream, too:
"There was a time when men were kind/
When their voices were soft/
And their words inviting/
There was a time when love was blind/
And the world was a song/
And the song was exciting/
There was a time/
Then it all went wrong"
And the Oscar goes to?

- MARY!!!
Adam A.
- I take it the Lady Haden-Guest was not amused.
- I'm really glad these actresses are starting to push back. Good going ladies.
- [quote] I was offended by the Oscar show.
And I'm offended by her Activia commercials.
- What r3 said.
- She was more fun when she was writing and giving interviews when she was drunk and/or high.
- "Public executions"?!! For crying out loud, it was a silly song about boobs. Overreact, much?
- I am glad Jamie Lee told it like it is.

- Jamie is an old grandma. She does not understand humour of today's youth. Oscar was right to go for the youth of today.
- Hollywood always treated women as pretty playthings. Just look at all those age appropiate castings where old men are paired up with much younger women. Somehow that's something Jamie Lee Curtis seems to be ok with, as long the Oscars stay away from boob jokes. Hollywood is far from perfect and it seems such a random angle to be offended by something like Seth McFarlane's common juvenile humor. It's not like Hollywood is known for its artistic integrity with all those paint by numbers remakes it churns out for at least a decade now.
- Seth is forty years old. How was the academy going for youth?
- She has always seemed mean and unfun to me. I remember when she went on Rosie's old talk show and complained about kids believing in Santa Claus.
- The boob song was silly, but it was also dead on. Look at all those sites that list nudity of actors and which films, we do it as well for shirtless/ass/peen shots. People want to know this and it's one thing people want to see in movies, newsflash actors are attractive and sell sex.
Ironically Jamie Lee's topless scene in Trading Places was referred to in exactly that way in Scream.
The best moment I thought was when Captain Kirk said MacFarlane would come out in 2015, plus the gay references. This is verboten for Hollywood, they will never acknowledge the bearding but I liked that they finally alluded to it here.
- Shut the fuck up, Jamie. Your movie nudity was necessary..right, it was so important that "Trading Places" be seen. What an important contribution to society. All movies are entertainment only, none of them serve a purpose over any other. I can't believe people are still talking about this but I guess the Activia shill wants to remind us that once people wanted to see her fake tits.
- Jamie lee didn't take her top off at the oscars. She's not saying all the cheap shit should be outlawed, just that there's a time and place for it.
And I love people blasting Fonda and Jamie by saying that they're old. Yet McFarland turns forty this year and still conducts himself like he's a twenty year old college frat boy. Double standard much? Sexism as usual I guess.
- Says the woman who went out and got implants right before she played the hooker in Trading Places.
And her most graphic nudity and sex scenes were in Love Letters, a film written and directed by a woman, so maybe she should back off a notch about the evil males in Hollywood.
- She's kind of all over the place in her piece.
1. She feels the Boob song was low-rent, and gave the Oscars a "roast" feel. Others have made similar statements. You could blame it on Jamie Lee becoming an old lady and out-of-touch. But this isn't a direction the Oscars have been headed towards, it feels more like a sharp-left turn in 2013. (I'm trying to think of other Oscar telecasts that had something as off-color and I can't recall any.) So I don't think she is as out-of-touch as much as this year's ceremony was off-line from what the Oscars are. It's a fair criticism.
2. Then she starts yapping about showing her boobs, and honestly she's just got to drop that. She did it, we know why she did it, and other actresses will continue to do it. So if she felt offended because the song hit too close to home, she needs a tougher skin.
3. Then when she discusses Seth's lack of respect for the female form, she's completely nuts. Is Seth the only person to make jokes at the expense of boobs? Hardly. Everyone does it: men, women, black, white, young, old, gay, straight. People joke about boobs all the time. Lighten up.

- I'm glad people are pushing back against that smug asshole Seth.
Amy and Tina showed how it is done at the Golden Globes.
Seth was juvenile and amateurish.
- "She does not understand humour of today's youth"
We understand it, it's just not funny. Frat boy jokes told by a middle-aged man, what is there to "understand"?
- The posters defending Seth are missing the big picture and are missing the movies Seth included in his "song". He didn't just go for the unessesarly topless shots, he went after actresses that did scenes with rape and other similar brutal subjects. How is that ok to make a sexist song out of?
- Jamie Lee is criticizing the same bigotted culture which largely keeps what gay males would like to see most FULL FRONTAL MALE NUDITY off screen. It is the shrivel-dicked straight male movie goer who is being marketed to in the majority of studio-produced films. If a guy had written the same type of letter to the Academy, you would NOT be villifying HIM. There have been many negative reviews of the broadcast on DL...Frankly I don't know why anyone watches the Oscars/Golden Globes/Emmys/Grammy freak shows. There just shlock celebrating the shit that's being pumped out under the guise of "entertainment".
The onlly good films today are indies.
- So she bared her tits on film... BIG DEAL!
I'll be more impressed when she flashes her cock in her next picture.
Robert Evans
- A couple of years ago, she went on HuffPo to complain about commercialism -- while she was hawking corn syrup yogurt that claims to make you shit better.
Now Ms. Topless is going on HuffPo to complain about a stupid song that makes fun of topless scenes?
[quotes]it's hard for me to cry foul when my body was my stock and trade.
It's "stock IN trade," but you're right, Jamie. It is hard.
- I made this point on another thread about the Oscars -- it was full of the idiots to be seen here.
Seth MacFarland is forty, no kid, no taste, a voice actor of gifts, but, as a writer/producer, a purveyor of cheap, snide, snarky TV shit, that may or may not amuse some people but had no place in the only serious movie award show.
But how DUMB are you not to know that he was FOR HIRE. The powers were the producers, those two stupid, pus whore 65 plus year old, idiot show queens, Zaden and Meron. They endorsed the script, came up with the moronic and badly handled and pointless musical numbers (except they had the point of serving their interests), the partial in memoriam list, the badly chosen excerpts from the nominated movies, the many idiotic presenters. And THESE old cretinous queens are FOR YOUTH?
You're a bunch of fucking idiots.
Sure, some of the PC stuff about the 'boob' song is a bit much, but you're going to defend it as WIT? Daniel Day Lewis had wit, and charm, and class. So did Jean Dujardin, and Streep. Arts in America are in bad shape, some of the movies nominated were horseshit, some of the actors nominated were just lucky, and yes, there have been chaotic and crazy Oscar telecasts before. None of that justifies this heaping pile of dog shit, or makes MacFarland more than yet another lucky mini-talent who should take his multi-millions and be kicked back to the boonie he comes from, or justifies the lives and careers of Zaden and Meron who should have died in agony long ago.
- Odd how RAPE scenes require only that the female be nude, innit?
- It's MacFarlane, not MacFarland.
- Jamie is a very nice lady and is quite right about this.
American cinema is embarrassing. American television is embarrassing.
What people need to understand is that entertainment is our biggest export to the world. Now think about this: is the Boob song what you want the world to think of American males?
I don't.
- American has become one big piece of shit, thanks to our so-called entertainment.
-
I am glad that Jamie Lee told it true too. She and Jane Fonda and others are indeed older and not box office, so maybe they feel more free to speak out. The look on the faces of everyone from Katherine Bigalow to Sally Field to Helen Hunt and even Clooney showed they were not impressed.
Jamie Lee Curtis is outspoken. She is smart enough to know that the obsessive simple minds will use the grade school debate tactic of stating that she has shown her breasts in films. She attempts to put it in context.
Her point is that MacFarlane was reducing a large group of actresses in famous roles to nothing but their "boobs." Not cool, and not edgy either. Adolescent.
Add to that his references to eating disorders, Adele's weight, Rihanna getting beat and Aniston being a stripper and it was a very misogynist show.
I think that Streep looked not very pleased to be there, possibly disgusted and could not wait to get out off. If is just a guess.
People get Seth's humour, it is not so esoteric you know, and the Oscars was the wrong place for it and he was exposed. Name one derogatory comment he made about men in the film industry? Orgy at Nicholsons?......
MacFarlane may have brought in younger male viewers this year, but who really thinks they would tune in again? To see Shirley Bassey, Barbra Streisand, Catherine Zeta Jones or to watch soft shoe numbers or Channing Tatum trip over his spats? It was a terrible show.
Yeah, the nerds got Captain Kirk, who really belongs on the Oscars, but the rest of the show was not only very predicable and lacking in highlights, but not funny even in Seth's world. A disappointment for all viewers.
Naturally Jamie Lee and Fonda will be called old and humourless and worse. Who falls for that kind of non-responsive attack as a reply?
If you offend a large group of people, then apologize or go away.
He won't be back.
- oh please
she's a dreadful actress
yes, she bared her breasts and if she didn't want to then she shouldn't have done it. no one forced her to do it.
Yes, she's entitled to her opinion but she needs to stop talking like she's hollywood royalty.
She isn't.
Sounds like she wrote that while constipated.
- Sing it, r24! AMEN!
- "Snark" is where it is at. The Oscar needs to go for snark and irony to stay relevant.
- Let's be honost, Seth McFarlane was asked to host the Oscars AFTER his stint on SNL. I doubt if the producers would have even known who the hell he was before that.
- [quote]Her point is that MacFarlane was reducing a large group of actresses in famous roles to nothing but their "boobs." Not cool, and not edgy either. Adolescent.
OK, but regardless of how famous the role is, did they need to show their tits?
Is there one single movie where seeing an actress' tits was vital to the film?
- The Boob song was very Apatow-ish, and his movie flopped thankfully.
- Eveerything MacFarlane said and sang was pre-written, pre-approved, and pre-rehearsed. Why is he bearing thee brunt of criticism?

- People aren't supposed to act like craven and childish boors at red carpet events where the guests are dressed up in black tie and designer gowns. The "I Saw Your Boobs" song made a mockery of what is presumably a formal occasion.
- This from the woman who would have no career whatsoever had she not exposed her purchased breasts in Trading Places.
- She lost me comparing the boob song to public execution. Let's get a grip here.
- Jaime Lee ..... we saw your boobs, we saw your boobs ....
- We heard her poop, as well.

LOL!!! I liked what Roger Ebert wrote about the Oscars in January: "The industry spends all year churning out product like last weekend's box office winner 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D,' and then puts on its evening wear and poses as humanitarians."
- The American male lives in a state of perpetual adolescence.
retard-land
- Most latino men view American men as weak couch potatoes and are working hard and making litters of babies to out number and out-do the fratboys.
Seth's 'humor' really illustrates the reason why white american males will be overtaken soon. Seth is rich off of a snide cartoon. He's famous for putting women down in public.
Seth is the sterotypical couch potato male who cannot grow up and have a family of his own.
And believe me, Latinos are watching this being played out.

She acknowledges as much above, but says it was not her choice and was painful for her to have to do that to further her career.
You didn't even read the original post all the way through, did you?
- OK, she's being overly dramatic. But desperate times demand desperate measures. The show was an abomination and deserves all the shit it gets flung at it.
- [quote]But desperate times demand desperate measures.
Mary!
- I thought "We Saw Your Boobs" was poking fun at all the guys who only care about seeing a movie if Actress X shows her boobs in it. Am I the only one who read it that way?
- [quote] I liked what Roger Ebert wrote about the Oscars in January: "The industry spends all year churning out product like last weekend's box office winner 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D,' and then puts on its evening wear and poses as humanitarians."
Bingo! Anyone who claims that the Oscars celebrate artistic achievements must live in a parallel universe, apparently uninhabited by your average American moviegoer. The Hollywood itself refers to movies as "product", so would you hold processed cheese industry awards to the same high standard?
And, no, Seth MacFarlane is not some edgy comedic genius. He has one schtick that gets tired very quickly while he continues to beat you over the head with variations of the same joke again and again.
- The boob song was rather juvenile, and I could condemn it were the only thing in the opening number. But it was a small part of a larger opening number that I thought was pretty well done. And overall, I thought Seth was a good host throughout the evening.
- She needs a woman.
- She is a hypocritical mess. When will the men bashing end? I'm male and I'm gay. I can't win. But I can speak up. Wish more men would.
- Seth could've easily performed a song about starlets who strangely haven't figured out how to exit a paparazzi-surrounded car when they're going commando.

- Viewers tuned in to see Streisand and Adele. They certainly didn't watch to see Seth McFarlane, since most people don't even know who he is.
- No R51 that's what I got out of it and said so at R13.
What about the actresses who were complicit in this (largely pre-recorded) skit, like Naomi Watts whose tits were out in her latest role but not in a funny way.
The one surprise was he mentioned Meryl who I thought had some sort of no nudity policy, can't remember that in Silkwood.. maybe just full frontal which is fair enough, who can blame her. And some actors like Ewan McGregor and Kate Winslet ARE known for getting their kit off all the time, so they will get ribbed about it.
I loved how Seth pre-empted him being "worst host eva" at the start, a reference to all the hysteric hyperbole on social media. It makes me think all this controversy was pre-planned, if as you say he never wrote any of it. The Oscars need their internet publicity like anyone else.
- R59, how are things on Bizarro World?
- [quote]I loved how Seth pre-empted him being "worst host eva" at the start,
But he didn't "pre-empt" that. That was of course his intention, but by acknowledging humorously this would happen it in no way stopped the criticisms from happening.
Just being preemptively ironic does not excuse you from anything.
- It seems funny now though since it came true, at the time it was silly and in that interminable monologue. To his credit, he winced at some of the jokes.
The material may not have been good, but I thought he did fine. But his smooth style and delivery means stuff can fall flat and he is an acquired taste.
- I doubt he's looking for an excuse for anything R62. It was just a show and he obviously saw it as just that.
- It was just a show, and he flopped doing it. He's garnered shitty reviews and won't be asked back.
FLOP.

- Virtually all of Seth MacFarlane's material was from Hollywood. If Jamie doesn't like his perspective, why did she watch? I thought Seth did a very good job. I wasn't thrilled with all of it. Some pieces just fell through the floor. The opening sequence was a dull program all by itself. But over all, I like Seth better than the other except for Hugh Jackman.
- [quote]If Jamie doesn't like his perspective, why did she watch?
Here's a shocking piece of news for you: most people watch the Oscars not to watch the host but to see who won the awards.
- True Lies was the height of class, wasn't it sweetheart?
- 40 is young, r11.
- They really do need to add some class to the Oscar show. I agree with some of her points.
- [quote] The show was an abomination and deserves all the shit it gets flung at it.
And thanks to Activia, Jamie Lee has a lot of shit to fling.
- I wonder if Jamie asked for a body double for her boob shots in her films.
- R69, 40 is not young. I had no idea Seth was that old. He looks good though. They need to finally give a young person a chance to host this thing. 40's? My parents are in their 40's.
- No one watches the Oscars because of the host, and I mean no one. They tuned in to see who wins and to watch Barbra Streisand.
- She's right and I surprised there wasn't more out cry here. C'mon this Datalounge where a majority of you silly queens are terrified of Breasts.
- I admire that she was honest enough to mention her own topless scenese; also, she's quite right about (any actress) being asked to go topless mainly by men.
But, bitch please: the Oscars have been like a "roast" for years! I am old enough to remember Johnny Carson making fun of people; more recent hosts having the camera go around the room; making fun of actors - EVERY telecast, I think (except maybe Franco/Hathaway?)
And TONS of possibly inappropriate political jokes and comments over the years.
I think the boob song hit a nerve 'cause of MacFarlane's beyond-smug persona. Although he can get away with it to some extent, and he IS incredibly talented (as an animator); I would imagine Jamie Lee would love to have his current career.
And possibly off-topic: hello; do both she AND her husband ping to the high heavens????
NEXT YEAR: bring on Tina-and-Amy and "we saw your butt" jokes/song!
In the meantime: people, could we all just GET a life?????
- [quote]Seth is forty years old. How was the academy going for youth?
HIS age doesn't matter so much as the fact that his shows are popular with 20-somethings.
- [quote]And possibly off-topic: hello; do both she AND her husband ping to the high heavens????
You're right. The Christopher Guest and Jamie Lee Curtis marriage could be satirized deliciously by Christopher Guest and Jane Lynch in a Christopher Guest movie.
- Bullshit R77. He's a middle aged man trying to pander to people twenty years younger than he is.
Women get ridiculed all the time for doing the same thing. All these middle aged men still pretending they're "Bro's" are no different.
- [quote]OK, but regardless of how famous the role is, did they need to show their tits?
I dunno, why not ask the male writers and directors whether they gave the actresses a choice to show their tits or not. And then ask them whether they demanded ass or dick shots of their male co-stars.
- He may be trying to pander to people twenty years younger, but he and his shows also happen to be popular with that age group. Ever heard kids going on and on about "Stewie"? I'm not defending MacFarlane - I thought he was cringe-inducing and needed to turn off my TV.
- [quote]The boob song was silly, but it was also dead on. Look at all those sites that list nudity of actors and which films, we do it as well for shirtless/ass/peen shots. People want to know this and it's one thing people want to see in movies, newsflash actors are attractive and sell sex.
Exactly, the song was being ironic and was more a criticism of Hollywood and the double standard than it was making fun of those actresses. Of course this went completely over the heads of the PC idiots who are quick to shout "MYSOGINY!" at the slightest provocation. People criticizing the song have obviously never watched Family Guy where MacFarlane constantly skewers Hollywood and the fame culture that accompanies it.

Oh, dear.
the%20dictionary%20is%20your%20friend
- Has everyone forgotten "The Loser Song"?
- MacFarlane was just being himself, and the Academy knew exactly what it would get when it hired him. Anyone who disliked his performance should have a beef with the Academy, not with MacFarlane. Or as the poster above said, with the producers of the show.
- Complaining about the boobs song, which was part of a complicated "This is shit, isn't it?" game, is silly. The song wasn't bad, and served to show how dumb this sort of thing is. Which was the point of the number. It even had a few clever lines. And since when has the clocked rolled back so far that actors can't hear such a thing and contextualize it?
With that said, I think there was a lot to hate about the show. MacFarlane was terrible. Smug, clueless, unwitty, not on top of the action, mean-spirited, egotistical, repetitive and not a person who showed any understanding or interest in film. And the production of the show - from the terrible set to the terrible music numbers (talk about self-serving for the directors) to the lousy In Memoriam to the lousy presenters to the lousy writing - was awful.
The boobs were the least of it. I'm still offended by the Lincoln joke, and MacFarlane's rude response to the groans, obviously prepared because that's the response he aims at.
This is a man who had a cartoon dog (Brian) eat the shit out of Stewie's diaper, and spent long minutes of the show highlighting it.
And anyone was surprised he was a bad choice?
- Did nobody, absolutely nobody, get that it was supposed to be like "Springtime for Hitler", the worst number possible? Which is why Shatner comes back from future to warn Seth to cut it? And why the female stars went along with it, play scowling except for Jen Lawrence cheering that nobody's seen hers.
Why is that lost on everyone? Anyway, they had better come up with somebody who didn't exploit said boobs to get ahead (Jamie) or, worse, induce millions of women into body image issues with her exercise tapes -- while she was puking and plastic surgery-addicted through it all. (I love you but STFU, Jane).
- It would have been a funny bit if the second verse had been 'we've seen your dick.' THAT would have been funny, to do both sides. as it was, it just came off as sexist.
- [quote]She is a hypocritical mess.
I agree. Remember this video?

- I always loved JLC but WTF is she whining about? She made a choice to show her tits on screen (nobody forced her like she's implying) in order to gain whatever career benefits so why is she pissed off about a song that says that she showed her tits, a song that basically states a fact?
People like her want all the perks of their fame w/o any "inconveniences". Tough luck, lady.
woman
- Are those really implants that she unveiled as early as Trading Places? They even joke as much in Scream "when she could afford to buy a new pair".
That's a damn good set of fakes, I'd never have guessed.
- AND they were great tits, too. Who could blame her? I bet she secretly likes having a record of them for eternity on film -- since god knows they don't look like that now.
But, yeah, she too needs to shut up and find a better cause.
- She has CLEARLY stated her boundaries. It's too bad that she had to tell us now because she didn't tell us then
Nan
- There was a time when colons were kind/ When farts were soft/ And their odors inviting/ There was a time when fiber was blind/ And the bacteria was macrobiotic/ And the bacteria was exciting/ There was a time/ Then it all went wrong
Jamie Lee, victimized by the misogynist yogurt industry
- She doesn't need to shut up at all. Trading Places was done at a time when she was being typecast as the scream queen. Landis was the only one who was offering her a role in a movie that wasn't horror. So she did it, and it helped her branch out in other roles.
And we can't do things that we later regret? Give me a break.
I like Jamie Lee. She keeps it real regarding being an aging woman in Hollywood. And at least she makes no bones about doing foolish things in the past.
And yes, it can be contractually obligated that an actress show her tits on a movie if the script calls for it. That's often a term of accepting the film in the first place. Read up on Hollywood a little bit. Cybill Shepherd wrote in her book about how she didn't want to bare her breasts in Heartbreak Kid even though it was agreed upon that there would be a topless scene for her character at the first meeting. Everyone gave her a hard time about not doing it, but she stayed firm and after weeks of saying they couldn't find a decent body double, were suddenly able to come up with one. But there was tremendous pressure from the studios that she do it.
And the topless scene was simply going to be a close up of a pair of breasts. No face at all in the shots.
Honestly, if you compare the nudity in Trading Places or any of those comedies in the eighties to the nudity in movies like The Change Up, you can spot a difference. There seems to an intense dislike of women in these recent sophmoric, frat boy comedies. Having them naked, sitting on toilets and pooping. There's a general ugliness to female nudity in these movies that is very noticeable.
Shit, there's a general ugliness in a lot of female comedy today that is very noticeable. This whole having to be as a bad as the boys shit is getting tiresome. All it's doing is degrading women, and the ones who are doing it need to be smart and catch on to this.
- Does Jamie still have her penis?
- So is Christopher Guest gay? Why is he into her? Tranny lover?
- No, R88, it wouldn't have been, because dicks aren't objectified and used 95% as much on film as boobs are. The entire point was to slap Hollywood in the face about that particular issue.
JLC is mad because Family Guy made fun of her Activia commercials. Period, end of story.
- Wasn't the whole point of the sketch that left to his own devices Seth would say things that would offend....and then Shatner from the future would inform him how it went over and he'd correct it with the more traditional production number?
(P.S. Take a look at the photos of Seth, Daniel Radcliffe, and Joseph Gordon Leavitt rehearsing.....so hot....I hope they had a nice J/O session after all the hard work.)
- "People criticizing the song have obviously never watched Family Guy where MacFarlane constantly skewers Hollywood and the fame culture that accompanies it." If skewering Hollywood was the point of the song, it should be apparent in the song, not because this is what Seth normally does. Fail.
Also, Dick Cavett weighs in at the link.

- "slapping hollywood in the face." My stars. These defenses are getting dumber as the thread goes on.
Seth is a hack. Family guy rips off and spoofs everything it can get its hands on. That's the sole reason as to why its famous. Left to his own devices, Seth is lost.

- Listening to all the Seth/Oscars outrage over the past week, I've come to realize I kinda fall in the middle. Hence, my two cents:
1) On the one hand, I think Seth, though not the best host the Oscars has ever had, was certainly not the worst either (Franco, I'm looking at you). And though his opening bit went on far too long and the Lincoln joke was admittedly in poor taste, was it really the end of the world? Why are we even still talking about it? If you didn't like it, all you had to do was turn it off and find something else to watch. The remote is a powerful tool; use it and move on.
2) On the other hand, I think we as people can always see the humor so long as the joke is not about us -- imagine if Seth had performed a number called "Girly Men" about gay characters in the movies (with NPH and Lance Bass in the audience giving a pre-recorded thumbs up)? Or a song called "Steppin' Fetchits" about blacks on film. Can you just imagine the outrage either of those would have caused? Homophobes and racists may have rejoiced but the rest of us not so much. So with that in mind, I won't get upset about any female out there who was offended by his "boob" song. The consensus isn't unanimous anyway (lots of females weren't offended), so whatever I say. (Other than reading/contributing to this thread, I tend to tune out all the outrage anyway.)
So yeah, it's always easy to say people need to "lighten up" and "get over it" when the joke is aimed at some other demographic. It's when it's aimed at our own that it tends to lose its appeal.

- "read Cybil Sheppards biography!!!!!"
Oh, DEAR.
Are all of Seth's fans this incredibly stupid?
It would be funny if it wasn't so sad.
You can leave the thread now. You're kind of pathetic. Or at least go sit in the corner while the adults talk.
- I doubt most are Seth fans. They probably (like me) hate the hypocrisy and man hate that continues to be tolerated.
- yes r111 only smart people like yourself know who to spell or bother to care about the spelling of the name of an obscure actress whose career ended before most of us were even born....that the best you got Spelling trolling?
- R113 Sorry for boasting that I read. Clearly, you don't.
- R111 = Obsessed Idiot
- yes r114 you should be very proud of your reading....now go finish up Linda Darnell's bio...I hear it is a real page turner.
- Good lord, the over-reaction to this Oscar telecast is getting rediculous. I was at an Oscar party with 30+ people and no one reacted like it was any worse than any other year.
- She reportedly does or did have a foul mouth while working, said the little children who starred in My Girl with her. I mean, the word f*** defiles something natural and beautiful, depending on how you look at it, so I don't know about all of the arguments for her position.
It's weird. Sometimes I don't think celebrities have room to talk, yet they're some of the most influential people. Catch-22. They speak out as feminists, yet get paid exorbitant amounts by one of the most misogynistic industries possible; and they have to turn a blind eye to it, and even embrace some colleagues who are really into that sort of thing. Ya know?
I don't really care. I just think it's funny how some actors apparently perceive themselves.
- The one where she has an Oedipal-esque relationship with her sons was nasty.
- Can she get an erection with her mangina?
- Jamie Lee Curtis's exposed mammaries brought gravitas and vérité to the role of "Ophelia" the hooker with the heart of gold and a brain for business that could not be communicated so succinctly in any other manner.
I would never have believed Ms. Curtis's performance in Trading Spaces had I not seen her tits. Not even her spectacular gum chewing surpassed this vision in expressing her character's delicate nuances.
- Did Jamie get nominated for her gyrating and jiggling in "Perfect?" That film probably made Gloria Steinem suicidal.
- [quote]Dick Cavett? Who cares what that old closet case says.
I do. He is an erudite man with an interesting take on the subject. The difference between Cavett and MacFarlane is the difference between wit and snark.
- Just throwing it out there, but as a woman, I was NOT offended by the boobs song. I laughed my ass off, and you know why? As was stated earlier, it was purposefully BAD. And guess what? Actresses sometimes show their boobs. Actors sometimes show their cocks (Michael Fassbender's is my favorite on screen peen as of late). I don't think that Seth is a comic genius or anything, but he did the best he could with the material given. Anyone that's seen an episode of Family Guy should have expected low brow humor. Jamie Lee Curtis just needs to calm her tits. Pun intended.
- Does no one remember my shout out to Michael Fassbender's penis at the Golden Globes last yeear?

- [quote] I don't think that Seth is a comic genius or anything, but he did the best he could with the material given.
'The material given'? He and his writing team *created* the material, it wasn't foisted upon him. If it didn't work, the blame is his to own.
- Personally, I don't like comedians. I love comedy, but I really can't stand comedians, at least most of the so-called "comedians" working today. Most of them think being mean-spirited is funny and it's not, but even worse, most of them can dish out the jokes, primarily at the expense of someone else, but most I'm sure wouldn't be able to take one aimed at them. And for all their self-deprecating material (mostly tame shit that most of us would say about ourselves in public and certainly none of the self-invasive and revealing stuff like Pryor used to do, who most of them claim to idolize), they save all of their venomous stuff when talking about others and too often about things that, if it were them or their loved ones, they wouldn't find the least bit funny.
Of course, whenever someone points this out, they are accused of being humorless, overly sensitive, have a stick up their ass, etc., and again it's not that I don't like comedy, I just don't like hateful comedy. Biting comedy yes, insightful comedy yes, just not hateful comedy, which is what most of these people traffic in today. And for a society that now campaigns against bullying, we don't seem to have a problem with comedians who make their living doing exactly that. (The Onion, a satirical online paper written by comedians, calling 9-year-old Quvenzhane Wallis a "cunt" on Oscar night for no reason at all, then watched as this so-called "joke" was defended by many on the Internet and the Onion's writing staff reporting being angry with the editor for his eventual apology. Apparently they were just laying the groundwork for calling Jim Parsons a "faggot" at the next Emmys.) Comedians used to be fine back in the day, but as the years went on and more and more of them began to realize that the nastier you are, the more popular you became, then it just became a free-for-all out there with no limits regarding any person, any subject, etc. (Eddie Murphy built his career on hateful jokes about gays while Denis Leary makes offensive gay jokes in front of Jon Stewart on TDS to Stewart's receptive laughter.) A famous comic once said that, in his business, "nothing is sacred," while of course never making jokes about himself, his wife, his daughters or anyone else close to him and his family. Like most comics, he really meant "in comedy nothing of value to me personally is sacred," which is precisely why I think most comedians are opportunistic slime. But that's just my opinion.
Though I'm no personal fan of Jerry Seinfeld, I always gave him credit for the fact he made his name on the stand-up circuit without doing mean-spirited comedy. Like him or not, that is to be admired and a great lesson for all the Seth McFarlanes of the world.

- I made a career out of boobs.

- yeah Jamie you're relevant--they dont give Oscars for hawking yogurt that helps you take a shit
- Louis C.K.'s standup is a no-holds-barred approach, but it goes so far beyond dick and fart jokes. Talk about self-invasive. Seth is just a lightweight who falls back on fatty-fatty-two-by-four lameness. He doesn't anger me; he's just given more than he deserves, IMO.

- Love Jamie. Always have. But she is overreacting to the BOOBS number. Yes, it was tacky, but still a little funny in an "oh no he didn't" way.
Her boobs, by the way, are real. She inherited the great rack from her mother, Janet Leigh. Jamie had some improvements, but fake boobies were not among them.

- Hollywood was built on illusion, ambiguity and glamour. A satirical heterosexual comedian devoid of queer credibility has absolutely no business hosting the Oscars. People are complaining about Seth because they know that Hollywood has gone to hell. Maybe in that sense he was perfect to be the host because, let's face it, there are no stars anymore, there is no seventh art.
- So Seth is not gay? I thought someone one time on DL said he was?
- Exactly r26!!
Anyway it is wonderful to see Seth being criticized; he is ridiculously smug and that man-child frat humor needs to stop. Now.
- There was a time when men were kind/ When their voices were soft/ And their words inviting/ There was a time when love was blind/ And the world was a song/ And the song was exciting/ There was a time/ Then it all went wrong"
Truer words have never been written and not just about Hollywaood. There is such a lack o respect for anything in our society and we don't care enough about each other, only ourselves.
- Fuck that he/she.
- r136=MARY!
- [quote] And I'm offended by her Activia commercials.
Exactly. It was near impossible to watch TV without seeing her gray face 67 times an hours exclaiming about her fucking bowel movements, and yet it's she was was offended -- by having the Band-Aid ripped off her "exploitation" decades ago by dirty men.
Yet Curtis' blitz of the airwaves with intimate details of her shitting, that's a beautiful and dignified thing.
Sisters are really doing it for themselves.
- R14, R23, R30 and R137 are just upset because they've been fucked in the ass so much that every time they get a regular fuck (in the cunt), they fart.
- SOMEONE at this ridiculous luvvie-fest needs to be the guy saying "memento te mortalis esse"
It's not like it's a cure for cancer...
- And the Academy granted an Oscar to an 22 yr old actress playing a role that should have been cast w/a 30+ year old? In "real life", we would be shcoked seeing a 20 year old dating a 40 year old Bradley.
Movies are sexist- so why place the blame on Seth?
anon
- Who cares how old the actors are? What's important is how old the characters are.
A 20-year old actress can play a 29-year-old woman as well as a 40-yr-old actor can play a 33-yr-old. If we buy it on screen, who cares how old they are in real life?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't recall any reference made to the character's ages in THE MOVIE SLP. I bought their relationship hook line and sinker -- even if there had been a big age difference.
Angela Lansbury, Elvis' mother in "Blue Hawaii" and only 2 years older
- There may not have been an explicit reference to their ages in the movie, but there is in the novel upon which the movie is based. I think Jennifer's character is 35 or 36 in the novel.
Lillian Gish may have summed it up best over half a century ago: "You know, when I first went into the movies Lionel Barrymore played my grandfather. Later he played my father and finally he played my husband. If he had lived I'm sure I would have played his mother. That's the way it is in Hollywood. The men get younger and the women get older."
- Again, who cares how old the characters were in the novel?! They wrote a screenplay based on the novel, and things are changed in that process. Bye bye novel characterizations, hello Hollywood.
You are entitled to be of the opinion that you prefer the novel's characters, but you can't judge a film by how faithful it is to a novel. The only time that has some degree of relevance is when you are dealing with the classics (Shakespeare, Austen, Bronte, etc), perhaps because of how well they are known and how they have stood the test of time and endless stagings. Even then, you can come up with your own concept of a classic and end up with a new hit, even two! ("Romeo & Juliet" comes to mind)
So let go of the characters' ages in this contemporary novel and judge the film on how it stands on its own (I happened to like it, some may not). Screenplays are allowed to be different. The filmed media is different. The stakes are different. Etc.
Stockard Channing's Rydell High School Ring
- Why do you appear to be taking this personally or as criticism of the movie itself? You can like the movie and the casting as much as you want, but I believe that r142's point was that Hollywood in general is sexist (as well as discriminatory against aging women, which is reflected in its casting decisions). I agree with that point.
- Jesus christ, what a fucking drama queen.
McFarlane isn't for everyone, surely. And, it's a completely legit opinion to think he wasn't good and that he shouldn't be invited back.
Why can't people just say that? Her "surviving" his jokes and being offended to the point of injury is ridiculous.
- Amen, R147. Amen. I liked JLC up until I read her article. What a fuckin' prude.
