Cameron Mackintosh wants to produce a movie remake of OLIVER! Why??!
The original motion picture was the winner of the Best Picture Academy Award and was pretty near perfect. Why a remake?? Is this to be a reimagined vehicle for that Willow Smith gal since she lost out on Hip Hop ANNIE remake?
What happened to plans to make a movie version of MISS SAIGON?

Shani (Omm Pah Pah) Wallis- What a bad idea.
- I like the stage musical, but I hate the 1960s film. It all looks so still, artificial, and dated.
But a modern remake would only be worse.
- Sammy Banks to star
- Shani Wallis is trying to get them to cast her daughter, Quvenzhané, as Oliver.
- Here we go again..
Chicago was a surprise movie hit then more musicals followed (notably, RENT). None of them lived up to the acclaim or the $ Chicago had.
Now Les Miz is a hit so everyone is rushing to get more movie musicals made.
Les Miz was a fluke.
Fantine Schmantine
- He's probably thinking of changing the score:
But if it's all girls it can be like Les Lez in Olivia form.
- The only thing more ludicrous than idea of remaking "Oliver!" as a movie is the idea of changing the gender of the central character.
- Aaaand this is how rumors get started. Game, Set, Match.
- I think they should remake it as a special two-hour episode of HBO's "Girls".
- But please, no. I personally want the movie musicals to stop. Or, at least, the ones whose stories are meant to retain a shred of poignancy. Contemporary movie stars cheapen them for me.
- I'd do anything not to see this happen. I'd paint my face bright blue.
- How about putting the story in a modern setting? Oliver starts out in a "group home" run by the corrupt Mr. Bumble, who sells him to a sleazy "foster parent" to be used as slave labor. He runs away to join a group of squatter kids and their adult associates, Fagin the fence, Nancy the hooker, and Bill Sykes the burglar.
There isn't much in the story that isn't still happening today.
- Most films get remade, OP. Many Hollywood classics were remakes.
- Are you referring to the musical, OP? They'll do the real book, sans the camp crap.
- You do realize that Oliver is a book, right? They should make a good non-musical version.
- Instead, let him do the MUSICAL movie version of La Cage aux Folles, which has never been done.
Perfect vehicle for Huge Jackman as Georges and Patrick Wilson as Albin.
- True, many Hollywood classics are remakes, but still.... remaking Oliver! and expecting it to be anywhere near as good as Carol Reed's film is foolhardy.
But perhaps all they care about is making money and they think this will.
- Roman Polanski did a respectable version in 2005.
- Think of all the incredible British movies and auteurs that are aborted at conception because of people like Cameron Mackintosh and movie musical monstrosities like this taking all the resources.
- Do a TV cable version if you must but not a movie. It's been done.

Oh, no, not THAT!!!!!!

- If you're thinking of doing a remake, what about a remake of Mame with someone who can actually sing!

I didn't know that they made it into a book.
