The poll in the other thread didn't work. I made a new one and state your ethnicity (i.e. country of origin) in the comment section.
If "Middle Easter" refers to people who live in the center of Easter Island, you probably won't get many responses in that category.
When did Hispanic and Middle Eastern become races? Was there a memo or something?
R5 most be neither American nor Canadian.
Hispanic has ALWAYS been a race.
Middle Eastern, I think, is the newly coined race since there are so many new immigrants from Middle East and South Asia in Canada in the last couple of years. I think South Asians and the Middle East is the largest ethnic minority in Canada.
Don't reinforce the silly concept of race.
A nationality poll would be far more interesting.
I am American. Hispanic is not a race, it is an ethnicity. Hispanics can be black or white and I guess Asian too. If I'm not mistaken Middle Easterners are white.
Middle-Easterners are undressed
It's ridiculous to consider Middle-Easterners "white." Why not consider Asians white? These classifications are completely arbitrary.
Okay how about Caucasian?
R8, Hispanic IS a race. One example of a Hispanic person is Alejandro Fernandez.
Races are artificial constructs as the posts on thus thread show.
I agree with R7 & R8. Hispanic is not a race. Neither is Middle Eastern. Most Americans of Middle Eastern descent classify themselves as "White" on the Census. Most Brazilian citizens identify themselves as "White." All of this illustrates how these race categories are arbitrary, outdated, and pointless.
The 100 Meter Hurdles
I don't know what everyone's going on about. White people are EUROPEAN.
That should make it clear.
Oh and if Hispanic is not a race, I meant Latino.
mayor of this town
Latino is also an ethnicity. If you're going to buy into the construct of race beyond the human race, there are 3. Black, Asian and Caucasian. There a Black Hispanic People and White Hispanic People. If you are from the Middle East, you are Caucasian. Learn the difference between race and ethnicity.
This is the first time I've ever heard that Middle Eastern person are white people. I've never heard a Middle Eastern person identify themselves as White in real life. Kim Kardashian is Middle Eastern and no one considers her white.
There are a lot of ignorant people posting on this thread.
only in the USA is `Hispanic` considered a race.
Hispanic has never been considered a race, it has always meant people of spanish decent who were caucasian in Europe and some indian mix in the Americas. The United States has such poorly educated people, it's not surprising that all the made up names cause confusion. I mean, what the hell is a latino. That's a cocked up identity that exists no place else in the world but among the ethnic mexicans and central americans who sneak into any country that's willing to take care of them.
"Hispanic" is a way for America to categorize peoples from Latin American countries, even though all people in Latin American countries dont speak Spanish. That's just the way it is people.
I also dont believe that only %1.6 of the posters here have predominately Latin American ancestry. Come on bitches!
I once visited the middle Easter Island and didn't like it. There weren't many big rock heads there.
Lots of Latino/Hispanics are probably lying and saying they're white. They do it all the time on standardized category questionnaires about race. Studies show that a surprising number of Latino/Hispanics check off the "Caucasian" section because they think since their ancestors came from Spain (ie Europe) that somehow makes them white.
[quote] they think since their ancestors came from Spain (ie Europe) that somehow makes them white.
How ridiculous of them!!!
You've got all the Moors in Spain and those Mongolians who once inhabited the Duchy of Grand Fenwick, so that's not so European, expecially compared to Marsovia.
I didn't see superior so I selected other
Technically there are only three races: Mongoloid, Caucasoid, and Negroid. Everything else is a mixture. South Asians and Arabs are Caucasians. American Indians are Mongoloid (came over on the land bridge from Asia.)
I guarantee you that most of the 8% in "other" category are either white who are trying to make themselves seem exotic, or are black and don't think they are black because they have some white blood in them.
r36 is sooooo right. Plenty of Native Americans like Elizabeth Warren, white French boys like Tony Parker and Cablinasians like Tiger Woods.
[quote] Kim Kardashian is Middle Eastern and no one considers her white.
Kim Kardashian is the same ethnicity as Cher, Armenian, which is white. Tell me Cher isn't considered white now? The only thing non-caucasian about Kim is her ass.
R21, Kim Kardashian is Armenian. Armenia is not part of the Middle East, in the traditional sense (see link below). It is located in the South Caucasus, which straddles the border of Europe and Central Asia. That's "Caucasus," from which we get "Caucasian." Caucasian = "white."
Arabs are white and they check "white" on census forms. Steve Jobs,Casey Kesem, Janet Reno, Donna Shalala, Bill Shaheen, Tony Shalhoub, Shannon Elizabeth, Kathy Najimy, George Allen, John Abizaid, Wendie Malick, Hoda Kotb, Marlo Thomas, Yasmeen Bleeth, Doug Flutie, John Zogby are all Arab ... and WHITE.
And that's not counting Iranians (so-called Persians) like Adrian Pasdar and Andre Agassi who are also middle Eastern and white.
[quote]Technically there are only three races: Mongoloid, Caucasoid, and Negroid.
Australian Aborigines are not Negroid but Australoid. I also don't think Polynesians fit into those three neat groups.
OP, what kind of stupid ass poll is this? You don't even have a "mixed race" category.
OP, you must be stupid, stupid, stupid.
R35 "technically" there are no races.
It's *all* a mixture, and has been since the first of the species migrated from Africa.
Many black people here will never actually claim to be.
[quote]Australian Aborigines are not Negroid but Australoid. I also don't think Polynesians fit into those three neat groups.
A rose by any other name...
Black is black. I'm looking at YOU East Indians!
[quote]Australian Aborigines are not Negroid but Australoid
The Aborigines are are very unique case. They made be related to a Neanderthal subgroup, which would mean they are not technically a "race" at all, but an entirely different group. It would be interesting to see a DNA analysis.
Neanderthals were a different species of genus [italic]Homo[italic]. It's been discovered that a wide variety of modern Europeans have genetic traces of Neanderthals in their DNA, more than any racial group in humans.
DNA study from nature.com:
"... the Australian Aboriginal man owes small chunks of his genome to Neanderthals. More surprisingly, though, his ancestors also interbred with another archaic human population known as the Denisovans"
OP, there are only THREE races on this planet: Caucasoid, Mongoloid, and Negroid. People are either one of these or a mix of these.
Middle Easterners are Caucasoid. In fact the Caucasus Mountains where the term comes from IS IN THE MIDDLE EAST. Most East Indians are Caucasoid, but a smaller percentage are Mongoloid and even a smaller percentage of southern Indians are Negroid. It goes on and on like this.
I hate the DL Racist Troll with the heat of a thousand suns.
"Oh my God. I'm back. I'm home. All the time, it was... We finally really did it ... You Maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God damn you all to hell!"
We are switching to the new platform for The DataLounge this weekend. All of our mobile users have been using it for over a week and all first time users have been using it for about a month - which adds up to well over one million users. So we're ready to end this phase of the testing and move everybody to the new site. (more)
And yes, we've changed the look and some of how it operates.
Yes, we know you just *hate* it in well in advance.
Yes, we know we suck.
Yes, we are the biggest suckers that ever sucked.
But it was time for a change and with the huge shift to mobile it was long overdue. We've taken this opportunity not only to update the look but also make major changes under the hood (or "bonnet" if you're either British or pretentious or both). And we have to prepare for 2016 - a presidential election year where we can normally expect to see a 60% jump in traffic (yes, we've seen 5 presidential elections so far…Christ we're old).
The site has a bunch - nay, plethora - of new features which will make the site more usable: better search, the ability to ignore posters and threads, see link previews, to pick up a thread where you left off, spam and malware filtering and more.
If you want you can go explore and see for yourself, Click here.
And while running the tests we've noticed two interesting reactions to the new system - people are spending more time on the site and more people that come stay around longer and look at more stuff. Both good things. Yay!
Possibly we've not slain all the dragons and there will be issues that come up during the switchover. There's a help button in the lower right hand corner of the page which you can use to send us bug reports.
Please include as much information about the hardware (PC, Mac, Tablet, Phone etc), operating system (Windows, Mac OS, Android, iOS etc) and browser (Chrome, Safari, Opera, Internet Explorer etc) that you are using as possible to help us replicate and fix the problem.
Please note that complaints about colors, fonts, icons and the like are not "bugs" - they are design choices that we've made and we expect one or two cases of world-class bitching. But they won't actually cause headaches, scurvy, heart attacks, Restless Leg Syndrome, Morgellon's Disease or the vapors (but have your smelling salts at hand just in case).
Talking to DataLounge servers. Please wait a moment...
