Catherine Zeta-Jones or Scarlett Johansson or Anne Hathaway – Who could pull off the role of Tracy Lord in The Philadelphia St

IF there was a Broadway revival of The Philadelphia Story, which actress would be best suited to play the role of Tracy Lord? Catherine Zeta-Jones, Scarlett Johansson or Anne Hathaway. Only choose between these three.

• Hathaway. Johansson is too much of a guttersnipe and CZJ would be better cast as Tracy's mother.

• Not a fan but of those three, Anne Hathaway. ScaJo is, as R2 said, too guttersnipe and Zeta Jones is too old... she'd be better as the newspaper reporter, the role Ruth Hussey played in the movie and Celeste Holm in HIGH SOCIETY, the musical remake. At one time Gwyneth (during her IT girl phase) could have played her. In fact her mother Blythe Danner played Tracy in the Lincoln Center revival back in the early 80's.

• Although I don't think she's ideal for Tracy, Scarlett Johannson is not just a guttersnipe (although, unfortunately, she's been tragically misdirected as Maggie the Guttersnipe). For instance, there was nothing gutternsipe about her in Lost in Translation or in Hitchock.

• It should be Gwynneth's big comeback role! Seriously, Hepburn originally played the role because she was percieved as being too hoity-toity to be likeable. So, she tailored the role to humanize her upper-class image, something Gwynneth desperately needs.

• I agree about Jeremy Renner. Certainly much more than the talent-free egotwats mentioned. Renner could bring a touch of that silliness we know he had lurking behind that shrimpy, dull exterior. He could pull out his high-C accent, which we hear is hilarious at parties and when his food is served cold at restaurants. And, of course, he'd look great in the clothes. His wide, flat ass was MADE for 1940.

• Rebecca Hall is ordinary. Rosamund Pike would be better. Hathaway is best of the three choices.

As much as I love Danner, that was a mediocre, blandly directed revival and she didn't seem truly confortable in the role. None of OP's suggestions should be allowed anywhere near the part of Tracy. Don't think Rebecca Hall has the right style for Tracy - she's too grounded. Michelle Dockery from DOWNTON ABBEY has the right composure and "attitude" for Tracy, but she's so reserved that she lacks the energy level to carry a show like that.

• Theron has some of the qualities for Tracy but she's never shown that much talent for comedy, or at least the kind of comedy that is represented by Philip Barry plays.

• r21, Kate Hepburn had no problem with Tracy and she was over 33. Moreover, Tracy has already been married once when the play starts (not exactly a minor detail but one you've apparently forgotten).; so she's not an old maid.

• Uhm, no r22, I DID remember that, that's why I pegged Tracy as OLD as 27+. In the 1930s, how old do you think young, pretty, wealthy girls were at the time of their first wedding? Twenty-seven would be a VERY ADVANCED age for a girl who had not been married once already!

• I think Kevin Spacey offered Gwyneth the role at his theatre (to play opposite him) but she turned it down and Jennifer Ehle took the role.

• Age isn't important when casting Tracy. In the 1930s, an actress had to be under thirty to be considered hot, but today we have dermatologists, trainers, surgeons, and fertility specialists, etc. People with money look good for a long, long time! Today, an actress in her thirties or even forties could play Tracy Lord. It's plausible that a woman with money, looks, and wit could attract three men when she's thirty-five, or old enough to pass for thirty-five under stage lighting.

• I would say it also depends on who is directing. There are so few directors that are good and good at directing performances. Too many cast actors that already seem to have enough of the character in them to not need too much direction but then the character lacks all the nuance that makes performances great. You can get a decent performance from type casting but great acting comes from the collaboration of the raw talent meeting the genius of a director.

• The Director, Alex, has been a friend of mine for years. Really talented and down to earth guy. He told me when working on a recent show that the biggest issue he faces is battling with producers about what they think is right vs. what may be creatively best for the show. I also worked in theater and film and, in my experience, found that directors have less say in things than one would probably assume.
