What does "Eh" mean?

I hear it a lot but don't know what it means. Is it said to ask another person to repeat what they said?

• It can mean "so-so", "kinda", "not so much" depending on the context.

• If you mean as in "Pretty nifty, eh?" then it obviously means "isn't it?" I believe I've seen it uttered by (British) old geezers in books where it seemed more like a general emphatic noise.
