This would never happen today.

- Ronee Blakely!
What a great year for film that was.
- It shows how far the US film industry has fallen. Best Picture nominees were all masterpieces. Now, even with 10 nominees, we're lucky to get one truly great film out of the bunch.
Jaws, Barry Lyndon, Dog Day Afternoon, Nashville, One Flew Over the Cookoos Nest - plus Fellini's nom as Best Director for Amacord. All masterpieces. Such a good year Spielberg didn't get a director nomination for fucking JAWS, still his best film.
Even if they were to stretch it to 10 nominees you would have had great films like Tommy, Shampoo, The Passenger, The Stepford Wives, Night Moves, Day of the Locust to chose from.
