As usual, no equivalent term for leftover males at 27?
We know how they feel.
In the Hasidic community you're an old maid at 20.
The article states that the "leftover women" are A-quality and that many of those "leftovers" are happy being single, just unhappy with the pressures of society and family to get married.
Why isn't there any pressure on the unmarried MEN ( who greatly outnumber the unmaarried women in China) to get married?
Why aren't the men being called selfish?
"As usual, no equivalent term for leftover males at 27?"
China has a HUGE problem with men who can't find wives. Selective abortion has led to many more young men being around than young women, and the provinces are full of bachelor farmers who know they'll never marry because there aren't any young women around. All the local girls leave the provinces to get horrible factory jobs, which is awful, but it's better than marrying a dirt-poor farmer and being a slave to your in-laws.
The Chinese government is worried about a large population of young men without women, and my guess is they're trying to deal with it by stigmatizing unmarried women. It won't work, though, a gal is better off single than marrying one of those bachelor farmers.
[quote]"These girls hope to further their education in order to increase their competitiveness. The tragedy is, they don't realise that as women age, they are worth less and less. So by the time they get their MA or PhD, they are already old - like yellowed pearls."
"Yellowed Pearls" would be a great band name.
R6, the article says the state launched a campaign in 2007 to stigmatize women into marrying.
The good news is that the professional ones, or at least the ones in this article, are well educated and have successful careers, and don't seem to be falling for it. These are the women the government is seeking to improve the gene pool, according to the article.
Maybe r6. But the term took a life of it's own by being popularised through mainstream media and TV shows.
What I don't understand is how women targeted by the term are willingly accepting the labels and even using it to describe themselves.
Perhaps they do not find it offensive? Or they are just resigned to being constantly attacked on looks, age, figure and intelligence just because you are female.
I remember another thread about when does looks no longer matter to women and most says "Never!". Sad...
To r1, there is a term called "leftover men" but not as commonly used as "leftover women". Also traditionally men are expected to be older than their other half when they get married so I will raise the age limit of "leftover men" to at least 30.
To r5, of course there is pressure on the men side as well. The pressure seems to be focused on the women side because, as I mentioned above, they are supposed to get married at a younger age than that of men. It is a world where bald guys marry girls look like their daughters, no matter which part of the world you are in.
Kudos to all the "yellowed pearls" strong enough to withstand the pressure. They have my respect and admiration.
Well if they're stigmatized enough they'll stop breeding and that would be a good thing. But the Chinese gov't is incredibly fucked up.
Yep, it's odd that there is still such blatant misogyny in a country where women are in short supply. You would think these women would have their pick due to the imbalance of men to women. But the article says Chinese men "tend to marry down" leaving the A+ women dateless. Why is that? They should be in high demand, snapped up and married before anyone else. No?
They should be proud. I hope they are.
They reheat well in the microwave.
r13 "marrying down" as most average Chinese men really want a "mom, maid, baby machine and sex slave" all rolled into one. These A+ women are usually highly educated and has a mind or career of their own, not as easily manipulated or controlled.
They usually also comes from well to do family backgrounds. The guy's family background must at least match or be higher than the girl's to be a "worthy" of her.
Chinese culture is still very male chauvinistic. Women are still seen as subservient to men in a family unit. If the women comes across too strong or have a better career or earning more money than the men it's a seen as "losing face" for that husband. Not man enough if you will, losing out to the wife.
Exactly. The A+ men don't want equals.
r16 that's very true. people basically think of female phd as a subcategory of "leftover".
They are actually predicting social unrest since so many men will be left without a spouse.
Women without men: Nirvana. Men without women: things are going to get ugly.
The millions of unmarried Chinese men are not leading lives of happy bachelorhood, typically they're poor and living with their parents, bound by the tradition of "filial piety" to obey them and care for them as long as they live. A wife would mean children, companionship, someone to do the housework and slave in the fields, and someone else to act as a slave to the parents.
Which is why nobody wants to marry these guys.
Yes, I've read that before. It's not just China. Supposedly, there are certain powder keg "hot spots" around the globe that researchers are keeping an eye on because they can easily erupt in violence due to too many young males competing not only for mates, but limited resources.
We're really just animals, still.

If they're smart they'll hook up with a expat westerner who would consider a hot 27 year old professional woman a catch.
r22 not everyone wants to snag a Caucasian.
And let's not underestimate the gay population in China, some of these single ladies and men are going to hook up with each other.
All over Asia women are resisting marriage. Even in more affluent and wired places like Korea, the marriage dynamic offered by men is no longer attractive.
Japanese career women are enjoying the single life and refusing to marry, too.
I think they are rushing things. I don't think a women is "Leftover" or washed up until 30.
"We're really just animals, still."
Mostly men are really just animals.
It's interesting that worldwide, the more educated a woman is, the fewer children she will have.
India is going to be in the same situation. They've killed off their females and think the ones that are left should just "settle" for any old fug farmer? Yeah.
Like one of the other posters said, these women should start shopping for husbands outside of China. They are serious catches.
[quote]It's interesting that worldwide, the more educated a woman is, the fewer children she will have.
We do like them stupid, and utterly dependent on us.
There's apparently a term for moving up a step through marriage: hypergamy.
Hypergamy (colloquially referred to as "marrying up") is the act or practice of marrying a spouse of higher caste or status than oneself.
The term is often used more specifically in reference to a perceived tendency among human cultures for females to seek or be encouraged to pursue male suitors that are higher status than themselves, which often manifests itself as being attracted to men who are comparatively older, wealthier or otherwise more privileged than themselves or their current partners.
According to evolutionary psychologists, females have evolved a preference for higher status males because they offer their prospective children both "better" genes and greater resources, e.g. food and security. Men, who invest less in their children, have less reason to prefer mates with high social status. Some have even argued that men "marry-down" to ensure that their mates have a higher incentive to remain faithful.
The word "hypogamy" typically refers to instances of the inverse occurring: marrying a person of lower social class or status.
"According to evolutionary psychologists, females have evolved a preference for higher status males because they offer their prospective children both "better" genes and greater resources, e.g. food and security."
"Evolutionary psychologists" can suck King Kong's dong. Females haven't "evolved" a preference for higher status males. For the longest time, women couldn't go to university or work outside the home. In the US in the 70s women couldn't get even their own loan unless they had someone co-sign (that's only 40 years ago).
Women basically had no other option but to marry. Given a choice, most women (though not all) would rather have their own career and own income and not depend on someone else.
r25 and pretty soon Japan is going to have to open their doors to immigrants because birthrate is becoming a big problem. As the population ages, there will be fewer resources to not only care for the elderly but keep the workforce at a constant pace. There's not going to be enough working young people to even sustain their economy.
Of all the Asian cultures, I just do not understand the Chinese and the Taiwanese. They exists in their own bubble.
China is going to have a huge healthcare problem with the number of their aging population who will not have daughters-in-law to care for them. Damn sure their single sons aren't going to do much them.
They're reaping what they've sown for favoring male children. It's coming back to bite them on the ass.
Hmmm mmm mmm
r35 Some have speculated that marriage plurality may be the only thing that will save China (and the virgin men!). That or we will see an exodus of Chinese men to other countries in search of wives.
The Chinese and Indians are doing themselves a disfavor by by killing off the daughters because as a general rule (especially in Asian cultures) the daughters are often the ones who care for their elderly parents. Sons take off and start their own families.
From the youngest ages I played a card game with my 4 older sisters, called "Old Maid." The cruel teasing, that I would not get married at the "appropriate age," was so bad that I soon refused to play. Even in America families dis unmarried daughters.
"The term is often used more specifically in reference to a perceived tendency among human cultures for females to seek or be encouraged to pursue male suitors that are higher status than themselves"
In societies where social mobility is extremely limited, MEN will do their damnest to marry up!
Look at all the gold-digging men in Jane Austen, scrambling for an heiress, or a girl with a dowry large enough to live on. These were men whose options were limited to "the professions" (military, law, church), and who would lose their upper-class standing if they took a real job. The best way they could get ahead in life was to marry well, and it's the same in lots of other places. That idiot who came up with "hypergamy" wasn't looking at the big picture.
"China is going to have a huge healthcare problem with the number of their aging population who will not have daughters-in-law to care for them. Damn sure their single sons aren't going to do much them. "
"as a general rule (especially in Asian cultures) the daughters are often the ones who care for their elderly parents. Sons take off and start their own families."
Actually, in most of Asia the rules of "Filial Piety" require that the eldest son take care of the aging parents. In practice, it usually means his poor wife does all the elder care, but rural China is full of families that consist of two aging parents, and a middle-aged only son who can't find a wife. These men really are being stuck with a lifetime of unrelieved obedience and elder care, and social scientists are wondering if they're all going to go postal or something.
Why doesn't anyone talk about the women who do all of the elder care going postal?
In my (albeit limited) experience, in the US, it's the WIFE who gets stuck taking care of the husbands AND her own aging parents.
Are men just more violent when they have to actually do care taking? Or is care taking just expected of women and men, once again, get off scott free?
"In my (albeit limited) experience, in the US, it's the WIFE who gets stuck taking care of the husbands AND her own aging parents"
Why do you think men cling on so desperately to their male privilege? Cause it's so fucking convenient.
