Crocker was an embarrassing fame whore who, when the androgyny thing didn't get him that reality show, just became a ho.
Chris Crocker for sure, out of this list.
I didn't know Pee Wee Herman was gay.
Tom Cruise. Bitch be crazy.
I'll second that R5
Tie: Elton John, Bobby Trendy and Fatrez Hilton.
The guy on youtube who screams when he learns princess Diana died.
Where's Perez Hilton??
There are far worse. Start with the late not-so-great Roy Cohn. The kind of gay I truly despise and he has plenty of latter day cousins.
What's wrong with Johnny Weir?
Senator Lindsay Graham, R-SC
Actually, he's am embarrassment to humanity (I wouldn't limit it to gays)
What's a Perez?
what's really embarrassing is that we get our straight acting and appearing knickers in a twist. it takes balls to not give a fuck about blending in.
Chris Crocker at least has become hot (as long as he doesn't open his mouth).
Richard Simmons was never hot. And unlike Crocker, he does the gay equivalent of a minstrel act to amuse the heterosexuals.
Oh, I don't know..why do you ask me these questions?
Any of the queens on 5 Gays, 1 Girl.
Lyndsey Lohan - she's hopelessly fucked up and will never be anything but a fool.
Well, I don't know....Chris Cocker COULD be a wonderful spokesperson for a new generation of upstanding, respectable gay men.
But you gotta knock the dick out of his mouth first.
Tom Bianchi within the community, George Michael externally.
It's not that there’s an insufficient number of gay men, it's that they're different. The point I'm trying to make is that this particular generation tied on a mask. There was a break in the culture. But additionally, the idea—and not just the idea, the actual life of homosexuals—changed immeasurably because of the acceptance of homosexuality. And that was because of AIDS. No one ever says that. Or how AIDS caused gay marriage. I mean, it would never have existed. You could pretend to your family that you were straight, but you couldn't pretend you weren't dying. And also, people became scared, not just of AIDS, which was a sufficient reason to be terrified, but also because—and this is the other thing no one ever says—the way that AIDS spread, by which I mean the rapidity, which was caused by a level of promiscuity that never existed before or since. And I really believe that people made these kinds of bargains with themselves. You know, I'm not saying I have this on the record but from what I could see from the people I know who survived that era, it was like, “don't kill me and I won't do this anymore.” Also, most straight people never thought about gay people before AIDS, which is why I could publish this stuff, go on a national television show and never be asked about it, in the way you are asking me about it. They would focus on other things. And after AIDS, I think that [homosexual] people were afraid of a kind of official response to AIDS, like they would be arrested, or put in jail, all these kind of things, which are not unlikely things, by the way, and so they made up a lie. "We're just like you. We are just like you, we're exactly like you." But of course, they were not exactly like straight people. They were nothing like straight people.
The straights will never regard Lohan as gay anyway, so no embarrassment there. Most embarrassing bi, maybe.
The return key is your friend, r25.
All those drag queens on RuPaul's Drag Race.
Richard Simmons is himself, for better or for worse.
I actually think he's got a sweet spirit. But his femininity and his over the top qualities are what we fear in ourselves.
[R5] ya him
Ross Matthews. There's nothing wrong with very feminine gay men, but this guy is a walking minstrel.
This is the part where that troll enters and says something to the effect of, "How can another gay person embarrass you? You have internalized homophobia and deep-rooted shame!"
Didn't Mario Cantone talk about marrying a woman at one point?
R29: I saw Mary Martin interview Richard Simmons on PBS in the early 1980s. It was embarassing because of his huge ego, not because of the qualities you mention. Simmons clearly knew who Martin was, but did not care.
Agree Simmons seems like a very sweet person, but...
OP, you and your terrible poll are an embarrassment.
Andy Dick? Did you create this poll in 2003 and leave it in a drawer somewhere?
Why does everything on this site have to be so negative? Here's a list of men I am happy to share a sexual orientation with, intellectual heavyweights all: Michel Foucault, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Marcel Proust, Roland Barthes, John Maynard Keynes, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Jean Genet, Ludwig Wittgenstein.
wait im changing my vote to Perez Hilton.
There's such an embarrassment of riches right here on the DL. Why look outside for talent?
The "pray the gay way" types and Perez Hilton.
As hideous and desperate as Perez Hilton, Crocker, Simmons etc. are, at least they don't seem to have the humourless ego and dull self-absorption that the above three have. Savage is a racist, bi-phobic, self-promoting ass who thinks he has saved gay youth by making vanity videos about how aspirational his 'trendy' upper middle class lifestyle is while Brad and Andy are reality whores with delusions of class and 'refined masculinity'.
These types of toxic attention whores and self-professed 'experts' are the reasons why gay kids are killing themselves, not the cliche 'ugly' femmes like the queens in OP's poll.
Jason Russell of Kony 2012
I forgot about Dan Savage. That's one I'll add to my list.
The worst by far was a gay activist named Luke Sissyfag, best known for verbally assaulting President Clinton. He later did a 180° change and began speaking out against gays.
I was friends with Luke during that time. He was way over-the-top in his attitudes towards (against) heterosexuality - and I am a queer socialist radical, and was then too. He was so far in one direction that it never really surprised me that he flipped so far the other way, let us say 170 degrees (as I believed he at least still called himself gay). It meant that his ethics weren't consistent. Born-agains of any stripe have very labile personalities and I don't trust any of them, particularly born-again Christians.
On the other hand, he got the message out there. Too bad he couldn't have stayed consistent.
A real hero for my money is Peter Tatchell. His politics have been consistent for many years.
Kevin Spacey still hasn't come out.
Drinking game alert!!!
Andy Cohen is not on the list?!?
Lyndsay and Andy are bisexuals, not homosexuals.
I vote for MHB.
Sorry R45 but you have it backwards. If gay kids are killing them self its not from the likes of
Dan Savage or Andy Cohen.
Those guys fit the mainstream mold of men that look straight but openly gay. Therefore, mainstream accepts that as tolerable.
It's the Richard Simmons, Parez Hilton, Bobby Trendy types that straight world has a hard time with.
The kids that show any of those traits in school are the ones that get constantly tormented, beaten up and harassed. Those are the ones most likely to kill them self.
It boils down to this: Straight guys dont want to be seen as weak.
Fem guys disturb their idea of what a man is, some to the point of anger, hate, and even wanting to take them out of the group.
R45, you sound like one jealous bitch. Dan Savage really? Can tell by your post you want what he has and have have spent some time thinking about it.
I am proud to call Dan one of us.
Miss Rafael Nadal-Armstrong
Billie Jean King
Everyone involved with associated with Skate Canada
Elton John owns this thread. Vile Rush Limbaugh loving right wing geezer.
Dip Shit alert, what part of OTHER don't you understand?
My vote will always go to Rosie O'Donnell.
Ms. bobbie trendi
Kevin Spacey, he's just pathetic.
R55, why Rafael Nadal?
Holly near and Tom Robinson
It's a tie between Charles Nelson Reilly and Ryan Seacrest.
Richard Simmons just seems mental.
If you didn't know who he was, could Savage "pass" as a straight guy?
Come on, can you picture Dan Savage with a girlfriend or wife? It's about as hard as imagining Morrissey or Elton John in straight relationships.
Good one, R62.
I don't get the closet cases being listed. OP asked who we don't want representing us, which means openly gay people. Oprah Winfrey and the "pray the gay away" types don't claim to represent us since they don't even acknowledge that they are one of us.
My vote is Perez Hilton. Drives me nuts that he's many people's only example of an openly gay man.
Larry Craig would head my list, among the living. Roy Cohn, among the deceased.
Adam Lambert. Just go sway.
Gay men who don't say "I'm gay"
[quote]My vote is Perez Hilton. Drives me nuts that he's many people's only example of an openly gay man.
You have nobody to blame but the huge number of gay men who hide in the closet. You should direct your frustrations at them.
Mario Cantone, but not because he is a flammer. Its just that he is so loud, such a ham and he's not funny. He seems to be stuck in a time warp. Bette Davis impersonations? Really?
R20, he IS hot now, isn't he? Amazing.
Ken Mehlmann and any member of the Gay Republicans / Log Cabins / GoProud crowd.
Perez Hilton and any famewhore (Bobby Trendy, Andy Cohen, and Chris Crocker come to mind).
Tom Cruise and any closet case who just look and act crazy, because they can't accept themselves.
At least Jason Russell (KONY) is cute.
Jeffrey Dahmer and Aileen Wuornos own this thread.
I am. I lost my fabulousness and am constantly shunned by all the homosexuals in my small town.
Richard Simmons, Perez Hilton, and Bobby Trndy make even this gay person IN FAVOR of gay-bashing.
Her Holiness, Pope Benedict
R81 I know exactly what that's like. I never had a "fabulous" persona. I'm straight acting; not self-loathing, internalized homophobic, or ashamed to be gay in anyway. I just don't fit into bitchy cliques. People like us should have our own group-seriously. I'm considering posting my name, I've done it before and I not afraid.
Anyway, I think George Michael reflects upon us the worst. With his arrests soliciting sex in public restrooms he represents a distasteful, vile throwback to gay life pre-Stonewall. Actually post-Stonewall until about the 90's. He makes look like everything we worked so hard to overcome.
I agree with R77's list but would add the ex-gay proselytizers.
Perez Hilton for sure.
Either Richard Simmons or Ted Nugent. I can't decide. Can't stand either one of them.
Liberace's Diamond Cockring
Richard Simmons (because, unlike Crocker, people who know the horrid creature is.)
Funny...I posted on a Richard Simmons thread the other day that he embarrasses me and I was attacked for it!
Dan Savage. If he isn't self-loathing, he should be.
Luke Sissyfag "got his message out there"? Who the hell is he?
One hundred reasons to loathe this self-loathing thread.
I have little respect for any gay or lesbian who does not 'come out', stand up and be counted. Many of those Hollywood buttlicks stay in the closet and use the excuse that coming out will hurt their career. Bullshit. Look at Neil Patrick Harris, Elton John, Ellen Degeneres, Zachary Quinto, Sir Ian McKellan, Rob Halford, George Michael, Cherry Jones, Alan Cumming (love that name), Cynthia Nixon, Wanda Sykes, Rachel Maddow, Simon Callow, Kirsten Vangsness, Melissa Etheridge, Lily Tomlin. Their careers have not suffered one bit after coming out (or at least hinting to the public about their sexuality). I have NO respect for John Travolta who, even after being outed countless times by those "in the know", still claims to be a heterosexual, pussy-hound, family man. Ridiculous. His coming out would not tarnish his career or name at all. That's my beef!
What bothers me (and maybe I am just projecting here) is the display of unhappiness I see when closeted celebrities go off the rails and become Tom Cruise clone freaks with image control issues and those crazy eyes that scream: I'm happy in the closet and you better agree, or I am going to kill you!
It's like with fat people. Whenever I see an overweight person I see someone who has issues he or she tries to avoid by overeating. The same goes with closet cases who go out of their way by acting happy and content.
But this is more pity than embarrassment.
Luke Sissyfag is Google? I'm very impressed by his message--thank god he got it out!
R102 Is all you saw the Google home page?
I have to go with R5. He seems to lack any redeeming qualities.
That guy Samwell who did that awful song "What What (In The Butt)" on YouTube. Embarrassing!
