If you read the article in it's entirety you realize that he's not saying that he didn't experiment. Some of the words were put in brackets, meaning it was the interviewer's word/meaning in the context of an RDJ quote.

• I think it is still a day to days struggle with him to stay sober and there may be other mental problems with him too. So I find it amazing that he has managed to stay clean so far. I think he is really talented, but unfortunately he has chosen money over artistic values a bit too much lately (although Avengers and Iron Man were cool movies) and that might bite him in the ass career-wise and respect-wise in the next years. Yeah he might be Bi too, wouldn't surprise me. Maybe he likes stability at the moment, but you can lie only for a certain time. Lies will eat you up eventually esp fragile people like him.
