• Gays for sure. They were give the worst jobs in the camps. The hardest and most physical jobs. Other camp prisoners also discriminated against Gays in camps.

• The gays weren't necessarily freed after the camps were liberated either, they were imprisoned for a criminal offense which was still on the books. They went to jail or mental hospitals after liberation, in some cases.

• R14 as were any prisoners that had been convicted of a crime, pickpockets, thieves, etc. Homosexuality was a crime in Germany, same as it was in England, Soviet Union, and the USA. The allies saw the homosexuals as criminals that needed to complete their sentence just like any other criminal.

• The problem with this thread is that it's utterly pointless. The concentration camps were about as horrific as they could possibly be for EVERYONE interned in them. What the fuck is the point of trying to determine the difference in status among three groups who all faced extermination from a regime that wanted to erase their very existence?

• R17's post is essentially accurate. It was possible to survive in concentration camps such as Dachau. Most Jews, though, were sent sooner or later to death camps like Treblinka or the Birkenau section of Auschwitz, where the average survival time after arrival was about 2 hours. Not really enough time to fight over relative status.

• R20, have you looked at the overall history of the Nazis? Their rise played heavily on the victimization of Germany, first by those who they claimed stabbed them in the back (Jewish Bolsheviks), causing them to lose WWI, then by the victors' imposition of radical terms in the peace agreement. They even pulled out real anti-German propaganda from WWI to bolster their claim that everyone was against them. That's why Hitler made the French surrender at Compiègne - in the same place and even the same railroad car where the WWI armistice was signed.

• There were only six 'extermination' camps, all on Polish soil, with Auschwitz having the highest number of exterminations. The rest were labor, transit, or detainment camps. Even Auschwitz was originally a labor and detainment camp and only converted to an 'extermination' camp later in the war. Most of the gas chamber deaths there occurred after the Nazis started transiting Jews en masse while being pushed back by the Russians.
