• I wouldn't put the Captain and Tennille in with the bad stuff. Toni Tennille is one of the most underrated vocalists in pop music, doing session work for Pink Floyd and Elton John. And their own music holds up pretty well. Plus the Captain was hot as fuck back in the day.

• R4 is on the right track. One thing people forget is that the '70s was the dawn of FM. Most pop stations were AM then. FM stations tended to play more of the rock we like to remember. A lot of the good stuff was also on AM, but you seldom heard most of the bad stuff on FM. For the most part, the rise of easy listening FM came later in the decade and in the 80's.

• The funny thing is how even the most wretched of these songs brings back a memory. Music jolts the memory more than anything else. I was more into the F.M. Rock of the time, but these Top 40 Songs really take me back and put a smile on my face (well, except for Playground In My Mind, that one still makes me sick lol.

These songs take me to a happy place in childhood, before I knew death and loss. Many of these songs I hated in the '70s. I still do not care for most of them, but they do bring in floods of memories and a big smile to my face.

• R52, I hated "Seasons in the Sun" in 1974 or whenever it first came out. I thought it was so happy, so cheerful. But over the years I came to understand the song. It's by Jacques Brel. The singer, who is dying, is saying goodbye to his best friend and then to his cheating wife, who had an affair with the best friend. None of this, of course, came through in 1974. If you don't understand French, check out the Kingston Trio rendition, which is much more emotionally true than the weirdness by Terry Jacks.

But that Sister Janet Mead "music video" is one of the funniest things I have ever seen. Love the fancy footwork and synchronized genuflecting. It reached its apotheosis in this mawkish, grandiose piece of shit. The real shame here is that just a few years earlier, Eric Carmen's former band The Raspberries was making some pretty great pop records (e.g., "Go All the Way," "Tonight"). Grand Funk Railroad, "Locomotion" -- these guys were a truly wretched yet inexplicably popular band. Their version of the early rock dance tune classic "Locomotion" was a huge hit. It was also one of the very worst covers of all time. They completely ruin a great pop song. First Class, "Beach Baby" -- yet another atrocity in a decade that was full of them. What's particularly insidious about this one is that it's such a deeply annoying, impossible-to-get-out-of-your-head earworm. Vicki's only musical aspiration was to be a backup singer, she does make a lame lead vocalist. But the song is still very catchy, it just would've been better with Cher.
