- Whew! Thanks, OP!
I predict a swallow-every-drop Brantley blowjob for CINDERELLA. He hasn't gushed over a Singing Diva-to-be in a while.
- But maybe his gushing over Cherry Jones and Zachary Quinto has given him his fix.
Plus - Laura Osnes? I can't see gushing about her.
- what happened tothe other thread?
- It got hijacked, r3. The less said about it, the better. Just continue with the theatre gossip.
- We were also discussing Seb Stan;s chances for a Tony.
- Is there an appropriate theater available for The Glass Menagerie if it wants to come in this season?
- Just back from Belleville. Odd play, not really a thriller as advertised. Greg Keller's bare ass is on display twice.
- R5, that's an easy one. NONE.
- GLASS MENAGERIE could go into the Belasco or the Longacre. Quickly.
- His chances with an agent named Tony are a lot better.
- Is Sebastian Stan a homo?
- R11 God I hope so
- I thought the scoop from the old thread was that Stan was a total womanizer.
- Look for Charles Isherwood to shoot his load all over "Really, Really".
- Saw Drood last week and loved it but my one complaint is since I sat in the 2nd row, I got spit on by Will Chase. I could not believe the amount of spit coming out of his mouth the whole show! He's wonderful and he's beautiful, but I have to say that was a bit like throwing ice water on my dick. Has anyone else seen this show close up?
- Second row center, covered in Chase saliva. If only he was doing live porn.....
- It goes with the role. Howard McGillin was a huge spitter too.
- I thought you weren't old r17.....yet you saw Howard McGillin you silly old show queen!
- News flash: Bette Midler tix NOT selling for her one-woman play.
Knock me over with a feather!

Unlikely. Very pretty, but speaking in language of more than a few syllables confuses it easily.

Interesting story on the playwright in the Times. Anybody here know him? Gay? Straight?

Straight, I think. Insecure, crazy. Mistakes darkness for depth.
So yeah, Isherwood will probably fall for it. Just what New York needs; a younger, edgier Adam Rapp.
- Are we allowed to talk about papering services and which ones are best? It's time to renew my membership with the service I've been with for years, but before I do I'm wondering if there's a better one out there.
- Do papering services give you free tickets or just discounted ones?
- Laramie Project at BAM was surprisingly still moving in the first part and really unnecessary in the second part. They really needed younger actors and cuter ones, too. Still, glad I saw it.
The audience was filled with elder gays.

- R24, you pay an annual membership fee to be in the service, plus keep money (usually 40 or 50 bucks) in an account from which a small administrative charge (usually 3 or 4 bucks) is taken each time you order tickets for a performance.
- Really Really is OK but not as good as the reviews it got in DC. It's La Bute lite. I think the playwright is gay but not exactly closeted but quiet. Isn't he the guy who released the Cheyenne Jackson nude pic?
- Kristi Dawn should watch the spray tan. She looks beige. She looks like the love child of Kathie Lee Gifford and Joey Heatherton.

- Sebastian Stan is:
A) repellent
B) a terrible actor
- It is funny that everyone seems to be swooning over Sebastian Stan. I only recognized him as the gay son on POLITICAL ANIMALS last year, where he was perhaps the third or fourth most attractive man on the series, hardly worth a notice.
- Everyone is NOT swooning. Can you not read?
- Isherwood won't be swooning over REALLY REALLY. He was at today's matinee and grumbled loudly to his "date" at intermission, and was the first one out the door after curtain call - couldn't wait to make it up the aisle before the houselights came up.
It is LaBute Lite, indeed. What do you expect from MCC, who's been able to finance the building of their new theater solely on their productions of LaBute these last few seasons?

More plays about drug addicts and people shitting themselves? Oh, joy.
- Isherwood may or may not like the play, r34, but fwiw critics typically try to race out quickly when the show's over to avoid getting trapped by people talking to them.
- Do the critics at the Times see shows that the other critcs review? The reason I ask. I volunteered as an usher for an Off-Broadway company and Isherwood and a few other NYTimes second string crtics saw the play during the run but only one of them wrote a review.
Does anyone know if this is standard? How do they decide which critic writes a review if more than one of them has seen the show?
TIA
- The really, really playwright released the Cheyenne Jackson nude pic??? now why didn't the times include that in the 'profile'! That would have made the profile a lot more interesting than him shouting after David Cromer

- R38, don't you think critics like to see theater? They chose the job for a reason. Maybe they just wanted to see that particular play.
- [quote]don't you think critics like to see theater?
Not #38 - but, no, I don't think critics like theater at all, honestly. They are all frustrated - fill in the blank (actors/playwrights/etc) and all they do it bitch about having to go the the theater and run times.
- I sometimes feel kind of bad for critics. Even if they go into it loving the medium they're charged to review, at some point, it must become dispiriting. If you truly love movies, for instance, how depressing must it be to have to sit there and endure EVERY goddamned Katherine Heigel flick or Uwe Boll atrocity, simply because it's your job?
- [quote]I hope that at least darling Evan Jonigkeit survives Really, Really with some rave reviews for himself. He got a bum rap a couple of seasons ago in the awful High, in which he was great but nothing else was. He deserves a prominenet theater career.

- Meltdowns backstage at Cinderella. The cast knows how bad it is, as performances get more and more awkward.
- Is CINDERELLA really in any sort of danger? Don't get me wrong; I'm sure it's a piece of crap. But it's doing good business, right? And it'll run a good year on the title alone, I'd think.
- Okay, everybody, on the count of three, one two three:
Cinderella, you in danger, girl.
- How is Vicky acting?
- Thoughts on the article I see posted all over facebook and theatre websites about minority actors not getting enough jobs in theatre? I think it used to be this way but in my experience producers now bend over backwards to make their projects cast a minority actor whether they're best or not. Plus minority means minority. The percentage of the minority ethnicity is low out of the whole of the population. Why should it be 50/50? Why can't productions cast whomever is best? The people complaining about it on facebook aren't the very talented ones and I believe they are using this new study to explain their lack of work. It's really irritating.
- The best acting to be found in New York these days is down at the tiny Cherry Lane Theater on Commerce Street in the West Village. It's such a treat to see Vanessa Redgrave playing a Polish woman who is welcoming a shirttail cousin (Jesse Eisenberg, perpetually on tiptoe sort of like an elderly Peter Pan)into her home, while he tries to get over writer's bloc. The payoffs don't always pay off, dramatically, but it is such a thrill to watch Redgrave at the top of her craft that it's almost churlish to find fault with the play itself. Very smart performing!
anonymous

The buzz before previews started was that this would be a Cinderella for the ages, all the R&H songs you love in a clever, funny new book that would resonate for the 21st century. Yes, really.
And what's happened is that all that "resonating" is what's bringing it (and audiences) down. And there's not much way to mitigate it because it's so much a part of this version. They'd have to start over from scratch to fix what's wrong.
- also, JG was with him last week. my friend saw both of them at a bar near the theatre. i really think ZQ's star is going to blow up soon. i think he's a much better theatre actor than film even though i loved him in AHS.

It was a hard job for her at first because she would be slammed by members of the theater community when she didn't like something or didn't praise something appropriately. It really hurt her and all she was doing was her job. Lay off the critics. They help theater. You can't get an odd no star cast play off the ground with great reviews and the reviews would mean nothing if they were always positive.

Yes, Vanessa Redgrave uses an accent. An expert Polish one as the character lives in Poland.
No doubt some Theater Queens will use that for mockery. They're still cackling about her over the top accent in Orpheus Descending.

Why didn't Redgrave do the tour in Aussie country should have been the question. And the answer probably is that she had enough of Driving Miss Daisy.

- I'm asking again an eternal question: WHET Ken Mandelbaum?
Does he still write at all (and if not, how does he make a living)?
Was that (improbable) rumor that used to get posted on here actually true - that he was banned from all Broadway theatres for videotaping?
- R81, he was banned from Papermill and Goodspeed, I gather. He sent young, stupid surrogates to do his taping a lot of the time. He fell from grace big-time as a journalist covering theater and that's all that matters. I couldn't abide his bragging in print about having this recording of that.
A Chorus Line press night in London tonight. Curious how it will do. It's already lined up for a UK national tour. Buzz has been good for it so far.
- r82, did he fall from grace as a journalist because he was videotaping, or for other reasons?
And do you know what he's doing now?
r81
- Maybe he fell from grace as a journalist because he actually wasn't one?
- [quote]I'm asking again an eternal question: WHET Ken Mandelbaum?
If you recall, last season, both FOLLIES and CARRIE were revived. So tumescent and unceasing was Ken's erection at the thought of this, that his heart simply gave out from having to pump so much blood.

- So someone spill about VIcky's shenanigans, please.
KOH
- R81- That is what I always heard... not sure if it's true. He did tape shows. One he is famous for was the Lansbury MAME revival at the Gershwin. He actually had to go back for a second performance as he fucked up the recording during Mame'sfirst number, "It's Today."
He would always take friends to the theatre and he would sit in the middle of the row with his friends on all sides. That way the ushers could not get to him if spotted... or so he thought.
Bootleg Betty
- R81- He taped Buckley/Hately Broadway CARRIE. He would never part with it unless someone could get him a copy of the Merman ANNIE GET YOUR GUN that was televised in color on NBC in 1968. Legend has it that the tape does not exist, that it was either accidentally erased or that was the agreement with Lincoln Center producers of the revival.

There must be a kinescope of it out there somewhere.
- Kinescope? Honey, it was done in 1966. Kinescope was long gone by that point. It was videotaped.
- Perfect response r86. Thanks.
- Home video tape existed in 1968, although it was reel-to-reel. So not common but it was out there, and NBC most certainly would have recorded the performance on videotape.
- [quote] NBC most certainly would have recorded the performance on videotape.
It also may have been erased, like many of the episodes of The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson.
- But what's weird is that Ken Mandelbaum has seemingly disappeared off the face of the earth, not just Broadway theaters.
- I realize Wikipedia isn't always 100% accurate, but according to this NBC was still using the kinescope process as late as Laugh-In.
I remember hearing a speaker at the Museum of Broadcast Communications that said most networks kinescoped as a backup on many live events until the late 60s, and that prior to home VCR's, a lot of enthusiasts did a version of it at home.

- Cannot stand Victoria.. she was downright ugly to Kelli when she chose to leave LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA for Roundabout's THE PAJAMA GAME. Plus she holds a grudge that O'Hara got Nellie Forbush over her ??!!! at LCT.
- Well, to be fair, Bart Sher swore to Vicky that she was his choice for Nellie Forbush -that she was the whole inspiration for doing it. But R&H, having been burned with bad reviews making fun of an "old" Nellie in the Glenn Close version, didn't think 50 year old VC was the best idea. That's when Sher turned to Kelli, without calling VC to explain.
- Why doesn't Kate Baldwin have Kelli O'Hara's career?
She sings and acts as well and is actually gorgeous if a little tall.
- To summarize Brantley's review of "Really Really" - I loved it, it was flat, sterile melodrama, it was okay.
Um, okay.

- I like her too R115 Saw her in The Pajama Game at the Muny... she was a pretty sexy Babe. And Will Chase wasn't bad either. Unfortunately Jen "Cuddles" Cody polluted that production.
- Jessi Meuller also has an enourmous ass and thighs. I saw her in a production of "Baby" in which she wore tight jeans - not a pretty sight.

R120 needs to get his ears examined, stat. Not to mention that he should take a few courses in music and singing before making such stupid "observations."
- Jessie Mueller is fifth rate. She was a terrible Cinderella in ITW. Unattractive, overweight, ugly vocal instrument. She couldn't be more overrated.
Surely, this is not what Broadway is relying on for an ingenue when they are dime a dozen at every music theater conservatory around the country?
- Agree that Redgrave is doing a master class at the Cherry Lane. She does use an accent (she has to) and has learned a bit of Polish to boot. It's a rare privilege to see her work in a small space with such detail and emotional truth. Eisenberg has one arrow in his quiver, but it's a cute one, and the play is just ok. But Redgrave is divine.
- Saw Two by Two and it was fine, although not the springboard to a major revival that Charnin seems to think it is. Alexander was excellent, but some of the supporting cast was wanting. Claybourne Elder looks good in a tight wifebeater, but was defeated by his big ballad. Tovah was Tovah. Too much borscht belt shtick undermined the book, which is pretty strong. Wondered how much was Peter Stone's original and how much Charnin's tinkering. Danny Kaye was seriously trashed in the talkback, as well he should have been.
W.%20Willison
- R124 Jessie Mueller was the one thing that lifted that revisal of ON A CLEAR DAY from utter mediocrity--she has a great voice and great presence. I have no idea what her BMI is, nor do I care, and nor do I care whether she fits someone's standards of beauty--neither Ethel nor Mary were knock-outs. That's not what you go to the theatre for!
(And I am, of course, referring to Mary Schwartz and Ethel Hodgkiss)
- I'm fine with her unattractiveness being compensated by talent, but that's simply not the case r127. The voice is common and at times offensive and ugly, and she's bland and ineffective on stage.
And really, you mention that horrible Clear Day as support of her talents when it was derided by everyone, was garbage from top to bottom, and deservedly closed in seconds? Come on.
- But R128, even those critics singled her out as the best thing in the show.

That should tell you what the truth about him is.
And as for misbehavior on the 30 ROCK set, he did threaten after every season that it would be his last - he and Tina, who started as close friends, don't even speak to each other anymore. Ditto his relationship with Lorne Michaels - you won't see Baldwin hosting SNL again anytime soon, if ever.

- Ben Foster replacing Shia in ORPHANS.
You want a scoop. There it is.
- [quote]Ben Foster replacing Shia in ORPHANS.
I detect a pattern. Does the role specifically call for someone who resembles a rodent?
- I bet it's Ethan Hawke. His play closes a week before preview starts.
- The whole Orphans tale is emblematic of whats wrong with the theatre now (and more sadly the state of the country)--namely, is nothing not meant for public consumption? You cant take a show out of town anymore since people are posting pictures of the set on Instagram and "reviewing" the show at intermission on chat boards. You can;t enter into a creative process (ie orphans) that doesnt coalesce without immediately publicizing private communications between the writer/director and fellow actors? Its disgusting
- r172 Ethan Hawke is too old for that part. The character is in his early twenties.
-
I hear you, r173. The Orwellian prediction has become a fact in our society and it is absolutely terrifying. By giving up our privacy so readily, we are also giving up our very souls. I truly dread the future.

Congratulations! You just figured out how New York theatre works.
- R174 Ethan Hawk can still pass for a man in his early twenties. He just has that type of looks.
- [quote]They had to change Cinderella's costume during the ITW Central Park run because the front was a mini and the back had a long train, but her legs looked horrible so they made it all a long ball gown
Were her legs to blame for the rest of the costumes in that hideously designed production? Maybe her legs aren't great. Who knows? But I sure wouldn't judge anyone's aesthetic qualities on the basis of that abortion.

So, tell us, in what other shows besides ALTAR BOYZ have you seen Andy Karl do "that smug white boy rapper act?" Did you see him do it in LEGALLY BLONDE? In JERSEY BOYS? In DROOD? I seriously doubt it, because he didn't do "that smug white boy rapper act" in ANY of those shows. Which either means that you're crazy, or that you didn't even see him in anything other than ALTAR BOYZ. In either case, your opinion is not valid and you should shut the hell up.
- Who is the loon who cares so much about a 50-year-old man's beer can cock? Gross!

- Andy Karl works all the time because he reads very testosterone in a business that is short on that.
- Seems like Steve Kazee has been out of ONCE for like the past two weeks - is there something seriously wrong?
Also - any pics of his feets?
- Wes Tay Tay's show is cute, R201, but it's kind of a pale (and blatant) knockoff of AKB's, and it would be better if the eps weren't so short -- just make them fewer and longer! The guys do seem realistically at his level, though, and the one you're talking about isn't all that.
- This Tay Tay guy isn't really much of an actor. At least not from that first episode.
- R201 I'm surprised Lauren Molina and Wes TayTay didn't strip down to their undies and do a number.
Say what you will about TayTay, I did find him strangely sexy in that back up dance he did for Katharine McPhee in SMASH. The one to the Adele song.

Neither did Anna Christie. The original New Girl only had a dancing Anna because of Verdon. There's no reason she should be a dancer if you're not Verdon - most of the dancing was not important to the plot.

- Wow had no idea Irwin was 62...He looks good.
- Went to see You Like Me: An Evening of Classic Acceptance Speeches at the Ars Nova Theater on W. 54th St. It's the second year it's been done and it was for one night only. It's very Forbidden Broadway but all the speeches are performed word for word. You haven't really lived until you've seen Jackie Hoffman as Vanessa Redgrave giving her acceptance speech for Julia. Or Rachel Dratch as Roberto Benigni. Or Michael Musto as Susan Lucci. Or Sean Dugan as Patti LuPone (her Tony speech for when she won for Gypsy AFTER TWENTY-NINE YEARS). Or Rachel Shukert as Liz Taylor making mincemeat of all those producers' names when she presented the Tony for Best Musical in 1982. This shit was really funny and the best $17 I've spent in a long time.
Michael Musto, if you're reading this-great job.
- sounds great...r257...I wish I'd known about it....Who else did they do?
- Did they do the Tony speech of a certain Mizzez Claire Huxtable?
- Don't know who played Sacheen Littlefeather (Marlon Brando's emissary) but she was a fucking riot. Jaime Cepero, who played Ellis on Smash, played Phyllicia Rashad-he could have been funnier but I think he was thrown into it at the last minute. I didn't know a lot of the other performers but they were all great. They played, amongst others, Oprah Winfrey (winning a Humanitarian Award at the Oscars), Julie Andrews (refusing her Tony nomination for V/V) and Elaine Stritch (winning an Emmy for her one-woman show).
R257
- And a really funny guy played Sally Field-that speech was performed right off the bat.
R257
- Also wonderful in OLD HATS is Nellie McKay - all original, funny songs and she looks fabulous. Couldn't be more charming.
FAR better than her last theatrical outing - that horrific revival of THREEPENNY OPERA with Alan Cumming as MacHeath. This time Nellie is really in her element.
- Victoria Clark can be pleasant, but she really sees herself as a "star". And she's not realistic about her talent, or age. She was convinced that Bart Sher was thinking of her when the SOUTH PACIFIC revival was announced and was crushed when the part wasn't just "offered" to her. She then launched on a somewhat embarrasing campaign to convice Sher that she was the perfect choice for Nellie, going so far as to stage a few scenes herself with a cast of friends and students (She fancies herself a director and has a degree in it from the Yale School of Drama) and inviting Sher to come and watch. Which he did out of politeness, but the story got round and made her look MORE than a little foolish, especially after Scarlett Johanson was announced as an early contender for the role, which then went to O'hara who had played her daughter!
She's not stupid, and was somewhat humiliated by the whole affair, and rightly so. She's been very careful since then, but she still gives off the air of "I'm slumming" when she finds herself in a piece or a part that she finds beneath her "Tony Winning" stature. When Sister Act failed to land her a second Tony, she was pretty vocal about what she thought of the play, the director, and the producers insisting on changes, before she left the show due to "vocal strain". Ultimately, she is a talented, but somewhat desperate person. And a little sad.
- Are you sure, r263? The version I got was slightly diferent. I heard that Sher himself thought of Clark for SP, and R&H immediately put the skids on, having suffered the embarrassment that came with the last old Nellie (Glenn Close). So he called her and said there were concerns about her age, and that's when she went into action with her embarrassing campaign.
The thing that strained her relationship with Bart, and further strained it with Kelli, is that neither one of them told her when Kelli went in and joined the contenders - she found out through when it was announced.
She made up with Bart because she knows there's job potential there, and she "officially" made up with Kelli, but they aren't chummy anymore.
And it's her manager, Danielle Thomas, who gave her the idea she could be "big." I don't even know if Thomas still handles her, because her career certainly isn't on the level of Thomas' other clients (KChen, Megan Mullally, etc).
She IS talented, and she WAS real once upon a time. But you get a Tony win that late and pass fifty without any real follow up, and wind up having to fly around the stage in a supporting role in a debacle, and that's bound to stir resentment in anyone.
- I heard/know that the Hammerstein organization were totally made into the "bad cops" of the situation to make Sher's letdown a little more easy to take. He had NO intention of casting her as Nellie, that was just something she and her chum Ted Sperling dreamed up. Sher was in an awkward position and really hoped the "I think you'd be great, but the boys at R and H are skittish about a more mature Nellie"(Which was bullshit out of the gate as they had done pretty well with Reba McEntire's Carnegie Hall concert version just a few years before)would put an end to the whole thing.
But Vickie didn't just let it go, and it got embarrasing for all concerned. It has cost her work and made her the butt of a lot of "Poor thing doesn't realize she's middle aged" comments in casting circles. And a few recent photo shoots haven't helped THAT at all.
In her small defense, Mary Martin was in her mid 40's when she originated the role. But that was a different time.
- She was, Vickie Clark, quite good in Ricky Ian Gordon's Grapes of Wrath as Ma Joad. But roles like that are few and far between. And that piece isn't going to have much of a life outside of the concert hall and the occasional opera house.
r265
- Frank also has to learn that he doesn't have to shout on camera as if his audience is a mile away.
- Vicki needs to get that witchy wart removed.

- Vicki, Vickie or Vicky did NOT study at the Yale School of Drama as a director or as an actor.
She went to Yale University as an undergrad and fooled around at the Yale Dramat (an extra-curricular club) and that's where she met Ted Sperling who was also an undergrad.

Vickie Clark sounds like the Melissa Leo of the theater world.
- Mary was only 35 when she originated Nellie, r265 (you may be thinking of how she was 45 when she originated Maria).

- "(Which was bullshit out of the gate as they had done pretty well with Reba McEntire's Carnegie Hall concert version just a few years before."
I think there's a general feeling that casting for a concert version doesn't need to be as realistic in terms of age, etc. as casting for a full stage production.
Brian Stokes Mitchell played Emile in that concert version of SOUTH PACIFIC, but I really don't think you're ever going to see him a full production. In fact, didn't we hear he campaigned to be in the Lincoln Center production, and that caused another awkward situation for Sher et al?
- You know, the rest of DL has become non-stop gleeful women bashing ... can we at least keep the theater thread clear of that.

Lynn Whitfield in My Brother, Marvin is the single best performance on stage this year. She deserves a Tony.
Tell your friends. She's astounding.

Mary may have been somewhere in her mid-30s when South Pacific debuted but she looked a good 15 years older if that unforgettable photo on the original cast album (that I grew up with) is to be believed. The one where you can practically see down her and Ezio Pinza's nostrils.

- A question about South Pacific- exactly WHAT was the reason for Emile killing a man? We just hear that he was "a bully" but he skirts around the issue, and Nellie doesn't seem to really give a shit. Which makes her reaction to him being married to an island woman even more fucked up.

- As an actor myself, I admire Vicky for campaigning for the role. That's cool and pro-active. Good for her. Even award winners have to fight for work. That inspires me.
- Does anyone know the inside story about why Vicky Clark didn't do South Pacific?
Also, does anyone know which director has a large penis?
I feel like these topics are never addressed here.
- 1. What's the deal w/ Ann at LCT. It was empty when I went (for free), it wasn't very good. If Boyett (and his 20,000 producers including Jon Cypher) is paying LCT for the space and members are getting tickets CAN they even close it early?
2. At BAM I read that Laramie is the most produced show in America. Is that true? Who gets the money? All those interviewers or just Moises? What does Laramie think of the show and how come only a few of the original cast did the BAM production?
- Moises has some sort of a foundation but I bet all the money goes to Moises, Moises being Moises.
- Is it true that Anne Hathaway and Colin Firth will be in a Broadway revival of My Fair Lady next season?
I find it incredible that two such sought-after stars would commit to more than 6 months on Broadway and I don't see how an enormously expensive and ambitious show like MFL could make back ts investment that quickly.
Also, can Anne sing that role 8 times a week? Or even once, for that matter?
And is there a director attached?
- It's a Clive Davis daydream. And that means it will NEVER FUCKING HAPPEN.
- Firth could do it, and he's not really a big blockbuster type of movie star so it's conceivable that he would do it.
Hathaway could never sing it. Plus she'll probably use the oscar win to get some projects off the ground - remember when she was supposed to be doing an onstage Judy play followed by a movie?
I see a Cabaret remake in my tea leaves.
- The Radio City Music Hall isn't locked in for this year's Tony Awards, is it? The Beacon Theatre has been such a better venue and has kept the riff raff away.
- Saw Sutton Foster do her cabaret show tonight in L.A. She was good. It's nice to hear a not-always-so-belty Sutton.

Mackintosh (who was producing) finally got LES MIZ off the ground. Like a child given a new toy, he promptly discards the old one.
- Maybe Macintosh will make a movie of Martin Guerre. Or, as it's sang in the show, Mutt-ton Gayr.
- [quote] What's the deal w/ Ann at LCT. It was empty when I went (for free), it wasn't very good. If Boyett (and his 20,000 producers including Jon Cypher) is paying LCT for the space and members are getting tickets CAN they even close it early?
Anyone who thought this little play was suitable for that theater deserves to lose every penny. It's so blatantly wrong, perhaps it's a calculated tax write off.
- [quote]Speaking of MY FAIR LADY, WHET the Emma Thompson rewrite that was to star Keira Knightley? Remember when Emma dissed Audrey Hepburn?
I believe it's dead.
- ANN played the Eisenhower Theater at the Kennedy Center which is even bigger than the Beaumont. It sold well in DC and audiences loved it.
- Of course it sold well in Washington D.C., it is a play about a political person and a Texan as well.
In NYC, no one gives a shit about Texas.
- [quote]Plus, whoever said Jackman could sing?
[quote]Jackman cannot sing. An awful vibrato and annoying nasal tone. He was no better than Crowe.
Ahh Theater Queens. If someone doesn't sound exactly like the original cast album, they fail. Sorry, but Hugh Jackman can sing whether you like how he sounds or not. He has won numerous theater awards for musicals including two Tonys.
- I don't think his voice is central to those performances, R317. He's passable but under no circumstances is he a great singer. His musical performances were always about his energy; I think Les Mis exposed how weak his voice really is. Well that and the duet with Aretha Franklin.
- R306 Sutton's mom is already played by Lolita Davidovich. JoAnne could play her grandmother, I guess.
- I was there last night at Sutton's concert too. She really is the best working right now. But it seems like she wants to stick around and try to make tv work.
- [quote] I was there last night at Sutton's concert too. She really is the best working right now. But it seems like she wants to stick around and try to make tv work.
Maybe someone will create a sitcom for her where she plays a spunky receptionist who really wants to be a Broadway star!
Kristi%20Dawn
- She's probably glad to be far away from stalking Suttentots.
- Sutton Foster is the blandest thing going. The voice is minor league, and she has nothing to say as an actress. She's completely dull and charmless.
- Boy r323, did you nail it. Her status in NYC is beyond comprehension. Pedestrian chorus girl material at best. But when there's a drought....
- r317, and winning a Tony means what exactly? Sutton Foster has a few and she's mediocrity at its best.
Jackman may be charming, have a great smile, and appeal to the fraus and queens, but he is not a singer. It's a whiney nasaly voice.
- I recently saw Rachel York in the touring company of ANYTHING GOES and thought she was much better than Sutt! She certainly sings the score better, who would have thought?
- Does anyone know if BUNHEADS is officially renewed? I know ABC Family has been pleased with its performance and even extended the first season, but it has not been confirmed as far as I know and last night was the season one finale.
Boo
- What is going on with Kinky Boots....they start performance in minutes and a show doctor just came in...ala Smash.
- r326: I thought York was the best thing in last seasons GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES. She had a real pizazz and frisky sence of fun that came close to overshadowing Megan Mullally. York reminded me very much of Susan Johnson.
I've posted this anecdote before, but I've never seen a Broadway performer be as gleefully irreverant in an interview as York: Some years ago at Seth Rudetsky's CHATTERBOX she cheerfully outed Julie Andrews as a lusty lesbian, saying that Julie had the hots for her during VICTOR, VICTORIA and that Julie showered her with gifts and was panting to get York alone in her star dressing room.
She rendered Rudetsky speechless, no mean feat.
Dishing one's beloved co-stars may have hurt York.
- I can't see Jo Anne Worley as Sutton's mother. Crazy granny, maybe.
Ruth%20Buzzi
- R328, who's the show doctor? Do we know?
- Is Daniel Sunjata the show doctor....I mean, dramaturg?
That's what they call them on Broadway.
Josh Safran
- Yes, that's Daniel Sunjata.
- I saw Rachel York in a summer stock ANYTHING GOES (not the Marshall version) a few years ago and she was terrific. And I liked Stephanie J. Block's take on Reno Sweeney so much more that Foster's.
kcguy
- Daniel Sunjata is book-doctoring KB?
- [quote]Daniel Sunjata is book-doctoring KB?
I'm sure Harvey's on his knees, gladly accepting every morsel of help Daniel thrusts upon him.
But really, who's the doctor/dramaturg on KINKY BOOTS? Is Harvey really going to stand for that? One hears his ego has grown exponentially with NEWSIES. God knows why.
- I think when an actress' age is discussed - Mary Martin's in SP; Vicki Clark contending for SP: it's not so much the actress' literal chronological age as how the actress appears. For example, would we all be up in arms if Bernadette was being touted as Nellie Forbush? I can totally see her doing it; maybe not now at 64, but 10 years ago...
- What makes me insane about the Kinky Boots show doctor coming in, is what I saw it in Chicago & it was a mess- it was sub-par theatre that shouldn't have been pushed into NYC, but reworked from the ground up- they didn't do a thing & now with a few weeks until previews, they are panicking? redunkulous
- So whats going on with Steve Kazee & being out of once for 2 weeks? He hasn't posted anything on twitter since 2/14...
- Bring in Tyler Maynard and his horse cock - that'll save the show!
- I would love to be in the room to hear Daryl Roth, Harvey Fierstein, Cyndi Lauper and Jerry Mitchell blaming each other for the problems that are Kinky Boots.
- [quote]Mackintosh (who was producing) finally got LES MIZ off the ground.
Uhm, NO ONE has ever gotten Les Miz off the ground.
- Anniversary of his mother's death?? Maybe Kazee fell apart.

Well, then you would be the shit of the Earth since apparently you know what's wrong and what's needed to fix it. But you're rather just spy on people. Why, you are just a common voyeur.

- [quote]I thought York was the best thing in last seasons GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES. She had a real pizazz and frisky sence of fun that came close to overshadowing Megan Mullally.
That's a real feat - overshadowing someone who was all the way out in Hollywood at the time. Rachel York's pizzazz must be transcontinental.
- I can't believe all these queens think it's the lack of sideburns that makes Jeremy Jordan look bad on SMASH.
He has ALWAYS had the face of a gargoyle.

I got my Megans mixed up!

- Really enjoyed Hands on a Hard Body. Very well done and I usually don't like Amanda Green's stuff.
Not sure exactly that it will take off, it's not particularly relate-able to it's target audience. As my clueless but wealthy friend (who bought our tickets) said at intermission "why don't they just buy the truck."
- If winning the car means they can't take their hands off the hardbody, how do they keep the action in the musical moving?
Forgive me if this is a spoiler-reveal kinda question.
- I read that Steve Kazee has vocal problems and is out of the cast till further notice. The rest of the cast performed at 54 Below a weekend or two ago and something to that effect was mentioned then too.
- Did anyone see Carousel last night at the NY Philharmonic?
How was Kelli?
- "Well, then you would be the shit of the Earth since apparently you know what's wrong and what's needed to fix it. But you're rather just spy on people. Why, you are just a common voyeur."
A statement like this should be immediately followed by flinging one's gloves in the other's face, presenting one's card and stating "I am willing to give at whatever time and place you care to name" before turning on one's heels and proceeding to one's club.
- The weird thing about Kazee is complete absence from twitter since 2/14 (where he previously would reassure about his absences, etc)
https://twitter.com/SteveKazee
- R353- James Cammer,a subscriber on castrecl (cast recording List) loved the concert.. Said it was the best staging of any CAROUSEL production he has ever seen.. he thought Kelli was magnificent in a role that 'she was born to play.' Kudos to Nathan Gunn, Jessie Mueller, Kate Buron (non singing role), John Cullum and the dancers in the ballet. He was happy that Agnes deMille's choreography for the ballet was used.
Then of course Alan Scott Gomberg aka 'Popeye' has to come along and piss in the guys cornflakes with negatives that he had heard a significant amount of the dance music for "June is Bustin' Out All Over," "This was a Real Nice Clambake and Louise's ballet had been cut. Mr. Scott Gomberg has not seen the production of course but he was quick on the draw with his put downs. He hates everything with the exception of Steel Pier.

- [quote] If winning the car means they can't take their hands off the hardbody, how do they keep the action in the musical moving? Forgive me if this is a spoiler-reveal kinda question.
They move the car around a lot, it's constantly spinning and moving, I kinda felt bad for the older cast when I realized they were actually moving it. In certain musical numbers when the song becomes internalized they remove their hands and jump on top, etc.
- Why does Amanda Green keep getting shows on Broadway when all of her shows always flop. I've heard she's really nice, but after a while don't people get tired of bankrolling someone who doesn't succeed. Even if she is Comden and Green's daughter?
- I wonder that myself r359, her "talents" are limited at best.
- read that Steve Kazee has vocal problems and is out of the cast till further notice.
Vocal problems singing that boring music?
- I guess it depends on who her partner is.
Her work with Lin Manuel Miranda was terrible on Bring It On, but then again I think he's a one trick pony who has been elevated because a) he's young and b) he's Latino.
Her work with Tom Kitt was better but High Fidelity still bombed.
Her work with Phish was the best I've seen, but it still doesn't seem like any other person couldn't have easily written those songs.
- Is Once that demanding of a score. Isn't it all just strumming a guitar and singing about Ireland?
- Kazee is the Donna Murphy of the current season.
Bellevue Switchboard Operator
- Amanda Green is the daughter of Green and Phyllis Newman. Betty Comden was not married to Green.

- Apparently the A-List are all doing TV shows or pilots
- Who is the Kinky Boots show doctor? Doesn't feel true to me...
- Does Kinky Boots begin previews tonight? The photos on Playbill.com look kinda boring. The drag queens all look like cube fraus. Or were those actual chorus girls?
- how long until barry Weissler asks someone to see if the (ex) Pope wants to play Amos now thats hes unemployed

- If you want to catch a looooong nap, take a gander at Annie Baker's THE FLICK at Playwrights. What could have been an interesting one act has been inflated to 3 hours with more moments where nothing happens than a Robert Wilson opera.
- Everyone is saying how long and boring THE FLICK is...I predict a rave from Isherwood.
- I don't doubt that Lady Isherwood will cream all over herself over this one. Realism is the point and the problem. He will rally around the point, while the rest of us must suffer through a three hour problem.
I have to say, once we find out the crisis in the play, it is rather intriguing, but not worth the tedium getting there.
Dame%20Brantley
- FLOPPERELLA is an abortion onstage and Oscar Hammerstein is spinning in his grave. The new book is atrocious - not funny (DCB's idea of humor is drag queen camp, not wit and totally without charm), and the attempts to "update" the story only immediately date it and make it unproduceable in 5 years (Prince Topher (gag!) slays dragons onstage yet asks "What is the purpose of my life?" - It's a fairy tale, not a therapy session!).
Osnes is dull as usual, Santino Fontana is the GAYEST Prince ever, Harriet Harris & Peter Bartlett do the same old tired campy shtick they've done in every DCB or Paul Rudnick play since the Year Two, and Miss Vicki is just ridiculous and pathetic. The direction is non-existent, the choreography is unexciting, and the design is hideous - those revolting costumes from the Thanksgiving Parade are indeed still there!
The subplot of the Revolutionary and the Stepsister is awful, the reassignment and new placement of "The Stepsisters' Lament" ruins the number entirely, and the puppets are just lame. The many children in the audience were confused and angry at intermission when Cinderella TOOK the glass slipper as she left the ball, instead of leaving it for the Prince (oops, SPOILER ALERT). You should have heard the parents trying to explain that MAJOR REWRITE of the story to their crying rugrats.
Only the Rodgers music remains unscathed, but some of the interpolated songs are useless and uninteresting and should have stayed in the trunk.
Despite what The R&H Organization would like, this will never replace LION KING as the go-to Broadway show for kids. They have taken a sweet little 90-minute TV musical and inflated it beyond all reasoning to a 2 1/2 hour misfire.
Brooks%20Atkinson
- But the flying, r375! How id Vicky/Victoria's flying? Does she do it with grace?
- As expected, Isherwood has splooged all over Doyle's production of the dreary Passion.
He felt a tightness in his chest! And it wasn't because he had a cold! It's because you were on top of the play, it's like the actors and the audience could feel each other and read each other's minds!
What drivel.

- [quote]how long until barry Weissler asks someone to see if the (ex) Pope wants to play Amos now thats hes unemployed
I hope not. He's really more of a Roxie.
- r375 The Lion King is the go-to show for kids? What? Who the hell can tell what's going on in The Lion KIng??? It's a total mess with a truly lousy score. Let's face it, unless the kids saw the movie , it would be completely incomprehensible.
I'll have to taker your opinion of Cinderella with a double grain of salt of you think The Lion King is THE show to which to expose kids .. UGH
- How can Santino Fontana appear gay on stage when he looks and comes across as straight?
- Anyone know cellist Peter Sachon? I see him occasionally accompany Broadway singers in their solo shows and I always find him hot. I first saw him at an Audra McDonald concert, and while I love her, I couldn't keep my eyes off him and his instrument between his legs.

- I love me some Annie Baker, but The F*ck is really an example of what happens when too much praise goes to someone's head. She and Gold are convinced that they don't need to cut a line because they are living in a bubble in which no one tells them otherwise. The New Yorker profile didn't help. What *would* help would be for them to get taken down a peg by critics but, as others have said, it may not happen.
- Yeah, that is a really boring SUPERMAN cast. What a wasted opportunity to make a B-level musical something really fun.

- R379, Lion King *IS* the go to show for children. Whether you think it is a good show or not is irrelevant, just like whether one thinks Phantom is a good show or not does not affect the lines around the block at every performance. Lion King is the show that everyone takes their toddler to for his/her first Broadway show. The kids HAVE all seen the DVD a hundred times before seeing the show, but it really doesn't matter as half of them fall asleep about 20 minutes into the show anyway.
- Agree to a point. I just took two nephews, one 5, one 15 to LK as their first Broadway show.
They were both mesmerized; it'll be difficult to find a follow-up half so magical.
- Lion King is shit. I have to agree with whatever response called it such.
- [quote] Harriet Harris & Peter Bartlett do the same old tired campy shtick they've done in every DCB or Paul Rudnick play since the Year Two
Still worth the price of admission, in my humble opinion....over the mumbly, self-involved young'uns.
- So Kinky Boots has no advance and Hardbody has even less of one? Wtf has happened? Used to be shows could open with $4 million without really trying, and at least have a shot. Looks like "kinky" will be this season's "Catch Me..." and Hardbody will be "Leap of Faith." Motown has an advance but if the show craps out, it will burn off by Labor Day. Matilda will be another Billy Elliott. All the reviews and the awards, but a "meh" from the public and a two year run.
- What's the word on Matilda's advance?
- The last thing Broadway needs is another drag musical with no names from tired Harvey Fierstein. Priscilla flopped despite good reviews-this one will too. The pics and vids online look awful. The commercial is zzzzzzzzzzzzzz. When La Cage opened originally, he claimed he never saw the movie before he wrote the unfunny book for it!!!!! So full of shit.
- How in hell is Will Swenson a reasonable choice for a JACK CASSIDY role? Just cause you're a "name" don't mean you're right for the part
What are the added songs in Cinderella?
- Added songs:
"Me, Who Am I?"
"Now Is the Time"
"There's Music in You" which sounds like the kind of music Dick wrote with Larry Hart
A section of one of the new songs sounds like it's lifted from Rodgers' score to "Victory at Sea".
Program credits D. C. Beane and David Chase with additional lyrics.

- Is Alan Scott Gomberg still alive? How old is he now, 60? 65?
- R377-
Jerry, maybe they need to adjust your meds. Isherwood did NOT write the review for PASSION. Brantley did.
- Saw TALLEY'S FOLLY at Roundabout last evening.
First time I've seen a production where the actress playing Sally really held her own with the actor playing Matt. I hated Sarah Paulson in MENAGERIE, but she's gotten much better. She and Danny Burstein work very well together.
It was a pleasant surprise as I didn't care much for the play when I saw the original Broadway production - Trish Hawkins wasn't much of anything as Sally and that mass of egomania known as Judd Hirsch carried on as if he were in a one-man show.
Also saw a regional production some years back, and again the actress playing Sally faded into the woodwork.
- I guess someone needed to do it:
Is PASSION going to transfer?
- "Saw Cinderella for the second time and it's pure magic. Laura Osnes is so beautiful and the whole cast is first-rate. Pure enchantment from start to finish."
That might be an honest opinion. Or maybe you're the shill, or one of the shills, who keep using the word "enchantment" as you post about this show all over the Internet.
- What's a "shill", Tante Sheila?
I repeat: Cinderella is pure enchantment from start to finish. It's an honest opinion and I have not clue what a shill is, nor do I "post about this show all over the Internet".

A section of one of the new songs sounds like it's lifted from Rodgers' score to "Victory at Sea".
In a summer stock production of CINDERELLA years back at Kansas City's Starlight Theatre, that instrumental piece from VICTORY OF SEA was indeed used as a number and solo dance for Prince Charming played by dancer Jonathan Sharp (THE RED SHOES). It didn't move the action along.. also "Boys and Girls Like You and Me" was used for the King and Queen.

- There's no show there, r426. The reason the original was daring - what made it run - was that it never addressed the racial issue. It could be any pairing, there's no political slant to the book, no discussion of their differences.
Of course, now there isn't any pairing that would be "shocking" (not even, really, a gay one) - so you're left with just the rotten book and good but not brilliant Rodgers score.

- Kathleen Chalfant - Who's her gf?
- The almighty dollar (i.e. audiences) will have the last word in the end when it comes to Annie Baker.
Just as they did with Sarah Ruhl.
She was the darling of the critics (did she win a Pulitzer?) but when her plays all started feeling the same and got boring, audiences stopped coming and theaters stopped producing her. Her last new play produced in NY was in 2008 and she hasn't been heard from since.
The same will happen with Annie Baker after THE FLICK - word of mouth is already very bad for this play, and not just because of the ridiculously excessive running time. Audiences won't sit for her stuff anymore and theaters therefore won't schedule it. She is in the last 2 of her 15 minutes.
The same thing can be said for the other current critics' darling Amy Herzog, esp. after audiences' responses to BELLEVILLE, which is proving to be very unpopular at NYTW. The night I was there, at least 10 people walked out during the show, and its only 90 minutes or so, plus the architecture of that house makes it very difficult to leave during a performance. But audience members didn't care - they were so displeased with the show they made noise and left.
Now if only the same were true for Theresa Rebeck, who really is a hack with no original ideas whatsoever.
Sam Gold at least has proven himself as a director with skill when he works with other writers besides Baker (THE BIG MEAL was amazing) so he has guaranteed himself a career of some kind.

- ANN is a 70 minute, badly written piece of crap stretched out to 2 fucking hours. The house was half empty last Monday night, and will continue to be that way. No New Yorker is going to give a shit about a Texas governor. The only amazing thing about this "play" is how that old broad remembers her lines. But it's no acting, only mimicry.
- But, R457, she has short hair and a deep-ish voice! SHE MUST BE A LESBIAN!!
- I left The Flick at intermission ... it was painfully slow and the long silences between characters didn't help matters at all. Belleville could use some editing, but it mostly held my interest, although the lead could have used some serious manscaping.

- Holland Taylor wrote the play herself, and has been working on it for five years. Why would she have trouble remembering the lines?
- Are there any references to Richards' rumored lesbianism in ANN?
- [quote]No New Yorker is going to give a shit about a Texas governor.
True. New Yorkers are only interested in themselves.
- I saw the LYING LESSON at Atlantic - Craig Lucas' version of LOOPED, with Carol Kane as Bette Davis.
Kane LOOKS exactly like Davis - a great wig helps, and she has those same saucer eyes - but the minute she opens her mouth, it's Simka from TAXI doing a bad Bette Davis impression. Which is too bad, since I think the play might be good, but it's hard to tell since you can't make out what Kane is saying half the time!
There are some good Hollywood jokes (the Crawford stuff is hilarious) but the story of the play is hard to grasp (I think - again, Kane's voice makes it hard to understand).
And I'm no old fart and I was sitting in the second row, so projection shouldn't have been an issue.
- R462, that's opera star Nathan Gunn. I remember being in London one Christmas and he starred in some opera on TV where he played an astronaut. Goddamn he was sexy in that. I rubbed out a few at just a glimpse of his hot, manly feets.
- how does Carol Kane continue to work-she practically cant speak English?
- why exactly is LCT producing Ann? does it balance the $ they spent on WarHorse?
- LCT is only an associate producer for ANN - they're essentially renting the Beaumont (and their members) to Bob Boyett, who is the lead producer and has worked with them many times. It's the same arrangement Roundabout had with the producers of Wishful Drinking a few years ago.
- No Cinderella reviews yet?
- YES R471!!!!
Not quite a rave but a pretty good review from Brantley - AND HE LIKED THE GOWNS!
Now where are the pics of the 2 "studmuffins" - his word not mine - he mentions in the first paragraph?!?

- And Lady Isherwood loved Belleville, which means he will love The Flick as well. The point of The Flick which is essentially the last half hour (minus the denouement) is very interesting, but why must we sit through all that sweeping, mineless 6 degrees game and then the after-hours movie screening scene. POINTLESS.

- As per my facebook postings, several unrelated friends are raving enthusiastically about the 1st preview of Kinky Boots. It's look like the show doctor paid off.
- Who was the show doctor on KINKY BOOTS? Was it someone who re-did Harvey's work, Cindy's, or Jerry Mitchell's?
Doc%20Simon%2C%20who%20wasn%27t%20called%20in
- Cinderella did get four or five outright pans, but most of the reviews are positive and a couple are almost raves. I would call Brantley's guardedly positive. He says mostly nice things about it, but without any enthusiasm at all.
My two favorite comments on Vicky/Victoria - from the Daily News: too bad the wonderful Victoria Clark, who plays the fairy godmother, wears a gaudy getup with antennae that make her look like Mrs. Mothra."
And from Bloomberg's Jeremy Gerard:
"Victoria Clark is a game Fairy Godmother, leading the show’s second big number, “Impossible.” (Too bad that sublime costumier William Ivey Long has adorned her with hideous purple wings and space-bunny antennae)."
How did we not hear about Vicky's antennae before this?
- I didn't want to see ANN. But my friend bought the tix and we went. It was excellent.
- One person's antennae are another's horns.
- What hath become of jesse21 and his pre opening night reviews? His jesse21 Broadwayroundup? Nothing on CINDERELLA!

- [quote]So no one saw carousel and has thoughts on a cast solidly 10-15 too old for their roles?
As was said much earlier by someone, a great deal of latitude is afforded concert versions of musicals (The Reba McEntire "South Pacific" at Carnegie was cited as a previous example of temperamentally correct casting of someone technically too old for her role.)
So the thoughts you're looking for were thunk by others earlier. Sorry.
- Not having seen Douglas Carter Beane's "Cinderella" I can't really comment on its quality but I question his decision to add the element of general civic unrest to the story. Cinderella is horribly abused by her own family--isn't that enough oppression and misery for one children's story.
Anyway, the magic of "Cinderella" that it's about how she escapes her miserable childhood and starts on the right path to a normal adulthood with the help of the Fairy Godmother (a sort of magical Child Protective Services worker) and the love of the Prince (who represents her opportunity to leave the past behind and create a healthy family of her own.) If that's missing from the present version, it doesn't what the ball gowns look like or which songs from the R&H trunk are interpolated. But if that's still intact it's definitely got a chance to succeed with the fraulings.
- Brantley's review of CINDERELLA was written knowing the show was selling well in previews and would probably be a popular success so it didn't want to look like he'd missed the boat.
It's similar to his Momma Mia review.
- Saw the matinee of PASSION yesterday. Beautifully sung, and for the most part pretty gorgeous.
My issues had nothing to do with the age of the actresses. It had everything to do with point of view. Why was this Fosca so healthy - I didn't believe for a second she'd die from a night of lovemaking. Also, why was the "big" song performed on three chairs pushed together as a makeshift bed? This is a major climactic moment, and all I could think of was it looked chintzy.
- "Belleville could use some editing, but it mostly held my interest, although the lead could have used some serious manscaping."
Does this mean he gets naked, or just shirtless?
- Jesus Christ--they just played "Someone in a Tree" on Sirius, and I can't believe how pretentious it is. I used to adore Sondheim, but find it all increasingly unbearable as I get older. As for "Passion," I'd rather watch that same cast sit on stage reading quietly to themselves. No. No, no, no.
- I wouldn't use the term "excellent" to discuss Ann. She is excellent, the play is pretty bad.
- Anybody bother to see Tally's Folly?
Cherr, er I mean, Jessica

- [quote]Saw the matinee of PASSION yesterday. Beautifully sung, and for the most part pretty gorgeous.
What's the difference if it's beautifully sung, if the complete score is boring and instantly forgettable?
- Talley's Folly is pure folly until the big revelation at the end, which is indeed very good. But until then, it's Danny Burstein doing pure schtick that could only work in the hands of schtick-master Judd Hirsch.
- [quote]What's the difference if it's beautifully sung, if the complete score is boring and instantly forgettable?
The music ain't the problem with that show. The dialogue and the lyrics are no great shakes, but again, the troubles run deeper. The story just plain doesn't work in the simplest dramatic terms. Game over.
- All the nudity in BELLEVILLE is offstage. The lead comes in from the bath in just a towel.
Apparently, there was another post-tub appearance at the end of the play when it was workshopped, but that has been cut by the director just before previews started.
Too bad - the play needs something to wake the audience from the stupor they're in after 90 minutes that feel like 3 hours of nothing.
- so is Kinky Boots is as great as the chat boards say?
- So who will be playing the leads in the musical version of The Bridges Of Madison County at Williamstown this summer? If it's not Tom Wopat and Laura Benanti I'll be very disappointed.

Kristi Dawn has 2 big solo concerts at the Hollywood Bowl this summer. She's also doing concerts in London in a week or 2, and also Australia later this year.
Her American Songbook concert will be broadcast on PBS later this month, and she also has a Carnegie hall concert coming up in May.
She's not hurting for work.

- Damn - you beat me to it. I was hoping Kristi Dawn would do a 'whack a mole' moment dodging crashing lights!
- Sondheim has one perfect show and the rest are on a spectrum from great yet flawed to unbearable. Not a bad record really.
- Laura Benanti is PERFECT for Francesca, isn't she? Perhaps a shade too young but this is theater, right?
- How many "perfect" musicals are there? Not a whole lot, but surely most lists of those musicals would include both Sweeney Todd and Gypsy. Probably no other writer would have two shows on the list.
- Richard Rodgers? OKLAHOMA CAROUSEL KING AND I
- Well....Sondheim also has A Little Night Music and that's a perfect musical.
And A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is pretty perfect and some would say Company is damn near perfect, too.
- The weakness of FUNNY THING is Sondheim's score. And the weakness of COMPANY is Furth's book. They're not perfect.
- [quote]Kristi Dawn has another pilot, too, if I recall.
Oh, yeah? What airline?
Sutton
- Apparently, Kelli isn't doing Bridges of Madison County. She's opted for Far From Heaven instead, which is probably wise as she's more suited physically to the role.
- And SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE. Has its problems (second act) but it's as close to damn near perfect as you can get in my opinion.

- Kelli is pregnant and has bowed out of "Bridges". I believe she is done with "Nice Work" at the end of the month and will do "Far from Heaven" for a limited run. Best wishes to the grand dame of musical theater.
another thing Sutton can't do
- R553- There is a bootleg video of Liza in V/V. No, she did not hit the high notes.. and they changed the character from British to Canadian as Liza can't do a proper English accent. She was given a new number and one was dropped... and you never belived for one second that Liza was playing Victoria/Victor.
She was L*I*Z*A playing L*I*Z*A. didn't complete the entire run either. Had too many appointments with her 'pharmacist' to do the show.
- Forgot to add the "Le Jazz Hot" number from the bootleg use to be on youtube. May still be there. A pre taped was used for that final note.
- I go to every Liza opening night. So of course I went to Liza's opening night in Victor Victoria, as I recall Rosie O'Donnel was there.
Of course the audience went hysterical when Liza came on stage. It was beyond fabulous. Liza was *L*I*Z*A* but in her initial moments on stage she was a quivering fidgety endearing mess.

The only show I ever walked out of at intermission. Had seen Julie Andrews early before the vocal problems and she was lovely. Liza must have had dental work because her Shhhh's were very pronounced and I couldn't understand half of what she said.

- r553 -
They changed the running gag of Julie singing (or, in fact, lip-synching) a super-high note and shattering glass.
Instead, Liza would loudly belt out a sung "Sas-katch-e-WAAAAAAAAAAN" (which was where Liza's changed-to-Canadian Victoria was supposed to be from), and the glass shattered I guess from the force of her vibrato.
It was as ridiculous as it sounds.
- Does Gypsy really count as a Sondheim musical? If it does then I concede that it and West Side Story (which would also count) make three perfects.
It seems to me that Company and Passion both have the same problem of an unbelievable plot twist. Bobby's sudden transformation from a commitment-phobic bedhopper into a lonely man yearning for true love sets the stage for a great song but absolutely nothing we've seen all evening gives us any clue as to why it happens. If anything I would think Joanne's making a pass at him would be a "yecch" moment that would make him question why he spends all his time with these dysfunctional couples.
- [quote]WTF with All That Chat? The very minute some press release on something of-Broadway sees a little ink, some ATC dolt will rush to post "what are the chances this will move to Broadway?"
And every first preview are the people that beg for a song list, as if they can't live without the names of fifteen songs they have never heard of. His nice ass and great torso kept me from falling asleep during ScarJo's monotonous monologue. And I was sure that he would have slipped on a pair of underwear during the intermission, but he was obviously dressing to the left -- he appears to have a nice thick brick in his pajama pants.

Here, R577 - SPOILER ALERT
At the end of Act I, clock strikes midnight, Cinderella flees the ball, Prince in hot pursuit. She loses her slipper at the bottom of the staircase, keeps going, then turns back to retrieve it - she and Prince get to it at about the same time. SHE grabs it and runs away - he is left with nothing and no way to find her.
That's the rewritten first act curtain - not the traditional story and the little ones in the audience were angry and upset and demanding to know MOMMY WHY IS IT DIFFERENT? IT'S WRONG!
