• Does Bette Midler have the worst producers? First the gold card offer dies (how do you not just put a picture of bette on the ad rather than a crayon drawing) and now they go on public sale during a 3 day weekend when people aren't really paying attention to the newspaper- tickets QUITE available (go to telecharge and take a look)

• Thoughts on the article I see posted all over facebook and theatre websites about minority actors not getting enough jobs in theatre? I think it used to be this way but in my experience producers now bend over backwards to make their projects cast a minority actor whether they're best or not. Plus minority means minority. The percentage of the minority ethnicity is low out of the whole of the population. Why should it be 50/50? Why can't productions cast whomever is best? The people complaining about it on facebook aren't the very talented ones and I believe they are using this new study to explain their lack of work. It's really irritating.

• The best acting to be found in New York these days is down at the tiny Cherry Lane Theater on Commerce Street in the West Village. It's such a treat to see Vanessa Redgrave playing a Polish woman who is welcoming a shirttail cousin (Jesse Eisenberg, perpetually on tiptoe sort of like an elderly Peter Pan)into her home, while he tries to get over writer's bloc. The payoffs don't always pay off, dramatically, but it is such a thrill to watch Redgrave at the top of her craft that it's almost churlish to find fault with the play itself. Very smart performing!

• My sister is a theater critic and she's not a frustrated actor or playwright. She's a journalist who loves theater. It was a hard job for her at first because she would be slammed by members of the theater community when she didn't like something or didn't praise something appropriately. You can't get an odd no star cast play off the ground with great reviews and the reviews would mean nothing if they were always positive.

He actually had to go back for a second performance as he fucked up the recording during Mame'sfirst number, "It's Today." • Agree that Redgrave is doing a master class at the Cherry Lane. She does use an accent (she has to) and has learned a bit of Polish to boot. It's a rare privilege to see her work in a small space with such detail and emotional truth. Eisenberg has one arrow in his quiver, but it's a cute one, and the play is just ok. But Redgrave is divine.

• Saw Two by Two and it was fine, although not the springboard to a major revival that Charnin seems to think it is. Alexander was excellent, but some of the supporting cast was wanting. Claybourne Elder looks good in a tight wifebeater, but was defeated by his big ballad. Tovah was Tovah. Too much borscht belt shtick undermined the book, which is pretty strong. Wondered how much was Peter Stone's original and how much Charnin's tinkering. Danny Kaye was seriously trashed in the talkback, as well he should have been.

• R124 Jessie Mueller was the one thing that lifted that revisal of ON A CLEAR DAY from utter mediocrity--she has a great voice and great presence. I have no idea what her BMI is, nor do I care, and nor do I care whether she fits someone's standards of beauty--neither Ethel nor Mary were knock-outs. That's not what you go to the theatre for! (And I am, of course, referring to Mary Schwartz and Ethel Hodgkiss)

• I'm fine with her unattractiveness being compensated by talent, but that's simply not the case r127. The voice is common and at times offensive and ugly, and she's bland and ineffective on stage. And really, you mention that horrible Clear Day as support of her talents when it was derided by everyone, was garbage from top to bottom, and deservedly closed in seconds? Come on.

• Baldwin is every bit the asshole you hear him to be and more. It's not just Jan Maxwell who can't bear him. Ask anyone backstage at any show he's ever been in. He's loathed and feared and barely tolerated. Or Rachel Dratch as Roberto Benigni. Or Michael Musto as Susan Lucci. Or Sean Dugan as Patti LuPone (her Tony speech for when she won for Gypsy AFTER TWENTY-NINE YEARS). Or Rachel Shukert as Liz Taylor making mincemeat of all those producers' names when she presented the Tony for Best Musical in 1982. This shit was really funny and the best $17 I've spent in a long time. Michael Musto, if you're reading this-great job.

• Also wonderful in OLD HATS is Nellie McKay - all original, funny songs and she looks fabulous. Couldn't be more charming. FAR better than her last theatrical outing - that horrific revival of THREEPENNY OPERA with Alan Cumming as MacHeath. This time Nellie is really in her element.

• Victoria Clark can be pleasant, but she really sees herself as a "star". And she's not realistic about her talent, or age. She was convinced that Bart Sher was thinking of her when the SOUTH PACIFIC revival was announced and was crushed when the part wasn't just "offered" to her. She then launched on a somewhat embarrasing campaign to convice Sher that she was the perfect choice for Nellie, going so far as to stage a few scenes herself with a cast of friends and students (She fancies herself a director and has a degree in it from the Yale School of Drama) and inviting Sher to come and watch. Which he did out of politeness, but the story got round and made her look MORE than a little foolish, especially after Scarlett Johanson was announced as an early contender for the role, which then went to O'hara who had played her daughter! She's not stupid, and was somewhat humiliated by the whole affair, and rightly so. She's been very careful since then, but she still gives off the air of "I'm slumming" when she finds herself in a piece or a part that she finds beneath her "Tony Winning" stature. When Sister Act failed to land her a second Tony, she was pretty vocal about what she thought of the play, the director, and the producers insisting on changes, before she left the show due to "vocal strain". Ultimately, she is a talented, but somewhat desperate person. And a little sad.

• Are you sure, r263? The version I got was slightly diferent. I heard that Sher himself thought of Clark for SP, and R&H immediately put the skids on, having suffered the embarrassment that came with the last old Nellie (Glenn Close). So he called her and said there were concerns about her age, and that's when she went into action with her embarrassing campaign. The thing that strained her relationship with Bart, and further strained it with Kelli, is that neither one of them told her when Kelli went in and joined the contenders - she found out through when it was announced. She made up with Bart because she knows there's job potential there, and she "officially" made up with Kelli, but they aren't chummy anymore. And it's her manager, Danielle Thomas, who gave her the idea she could be "big." I don't even know if Thomas still handles her, because her career certainly isn't on the level of Thomas' other clients (KChen, Megan Mullally, etc). She IS talented, and she WAS real once upon a time. But you get a Tony win that late and pass fifty without any real follow up, and wind up having to fly around the stage in a supporting role in a debacle, and that's bound to stir resentment in anyone.

• I heard/know that the Hammerstein organization were totally made into the "bad cops" of the situation to make Sher's letdown a little more easy to take. He had NO intention of casting her as Nellie, that was just something she and her chum Ted Sperling dreamed up. Sher was in an awkward position and really hoped the "I think you'd be great, but the boys at R and H are skittish about a more mature Nellie"(Which was bullshit out of the gate as they had done pretty well with Reba McEntire's Carnegie Hall concert version just a few years before)would put an end to the whole thing. But Vickie didn't just let it go, and it got embarrasing for all concerned. It has cost her work and made her the butt of a lot of "Poor thing doesn't realize she's middle aged" comments in casting circles.And a few recent photo shoots haven't helped THAT at all. In her small defense, Mary Martin was in her mid 40's when she originated the role. But that was a different time.

• She was, Vickie Clark, quite good in Ricky Ian Gordon's Grapes of Wrath as Ma Joad. But roles like that are few and far between. And that piece isn't going to have much of a life outside of the concert hall and the occasional opera house.

Said it was the best staging of any CAROUSEL production he has ever seen.. he thought Kelli was magnificent in a role that 'she was born to play.' Kudos to Nathan Gunn, Jessie Mueller, Kate Buron (non singing role), John Cullum and the dancers in the ballet. He was happy that Agnes deMille's choreography for the ballet was used. Then of course Alan Scott Gomberg aka 'Popeye' has to come along and piss in the guys cornflakes with negatives that he had heard a significant amount of the dance music for "June is Bustin' Out All Over," "This was a Real Nice Clambake and Louise's ballet had been cut. Osnes is dull as usual, Santino Fontana is the GAYEST Prince ever, Harriet Harris & Peter Bartlett do the same old tired campy shtick they've done in every DCB or Paul Rudnick play since the Year Two, and Miss Vicki is just ridiculous and pathetic. The direction is non-existent, the choreography is unexciting, and the design is hideous - those revolting costumes from the Thanksgiving Parade are indeed still there! The subplot of the Revolutionary and the Stepsister is awful, the reassignment and new placement of "The Stepsisters' Lament" ruins the number entirely, and the puppets are just lame. The many children in the audience were confused and angry at intermission when Cinderella TOOK the glass slipper as she left the ball, instead of leaving it for the Prince (oops, SPOILER ALERT). You should have heard the parents trying to explain that MAJOR REWRITE of the story to their crying rugrats. Only the Rodgers music remains unscathed, but some of the interpolated songs are useless and uninteresting and should have stayed in the trunk. Despite what The R&H Organization would like, this will never replace LION KING as the go-to Broadway show for kids. They have taken a sweet little 90-minute TV musical and inflated it beyond all reasoning to a 2 1/2 hour misfire.

Whether you think it is a good show or not is irrelevant, just like whether one thinks Phantom is a good show or not does not affect the lines around the block at every performance. Lion King is the show that everyone takes their toddler to for his/her first Broadway show. The kids HAVE all seen the DVD a hundred times before seeing the show, but it really doesn't matter as half of them fall asleep about 20 minutes into the show anyway.

• The almighty dollar (i.e. audiences) will have the last word in the end when it comes to Annie Baker. Just as they did with Sarah Ruhl. She was the darling of the critics (did she win a Pulitzer?) but when her plays all started feeling the same and got boring, audiences stopped coming and theaters stopped producing her. Her last new play produced in NY was in 2008 and she hasn't been heard from since. The same will happen with Annie Baker after THE FLICK - word of mouth is already very bad for this play, and not just because of the ridiculously excessive running time. Audiences won't sit for her stuff anymore and theaters therefore won't schedule it. She is in the last 2 of her 15 minutes. The same thing can be said for the other current critics' darling Amy Herzog, esp. after audiences' responses to BELLEVILLE, which is proving to be very unpopular at NYTW. The night I was there, at least 10 people walked out during the show, and its only 90 minutes or so, plus the architecture of that house makes it very difficult to leave during a performance. But audience members didn't care - they were so displeased with the show they made noise and left. Now if only the same were true for Theresa Rebeck, who really is a hack with no original ideas whatsoever. Sam Gold at least has proven himself as a director with skill when he works with other writers besides Baker (THE BIG MEAL was amazing) so he has guaranteed himself a career of some kind.

• Not having seen Douglas Carter Beane's "Cinderella" I can't really comment on its quality but I question his decision to add the element of general civic unrest to the story. Cinderella is horribly abused by her own family--isn't that enough oppression and misery for one children's story. Anyway, the magic of "Cinderella" that it's about how she escapes her miserable childhood and starts on the right path to a normal adulthood with the help of the Fairy Godmother (a sort of magical Child Protective Services worker) and the love of the Prince (who represents her opportunity to leave the past behind and create a healthy family of her own.) If that's missing from the present version, it doesn't what the ball gowns look like or which songs from the R&H trunk are interpolated. But if that's still intact it's definitely got a chance to succeed with the fraulings.

• Brantley's review of CINDERELLA was written knowing the show was selling well in previews and would probably be a popular success so it didn't want to look like he'd missed the boat. It's similar to his Momma Mia review.

• Saw the matinee of PASSION yesterday. Beautifully sung, and for the most part pretty gorgeous. My issues had nothing to do with the age of the actresses. It had everything to do with point of view. Why was this Fosca so healthy - I didn't believe for a second she'd die from a night of lovemaking. Also, why was the "big" song performed on three chairs pushed together as a makeshift bed? This is a major climactic moment, and all I could think of was it looked chintzy.

"will there be an OCR?" "saw this Tuesday. Ugh. Has it gotten better?" "can we assume no transfer this season?" "think they'll increase tix prices?" "does anyone backphase?" "are there gunshots?" It isn't fun reading anymore. Today they are all wound up about a television program -- television -- as if SMASH were real. Anyone with a working knowledge of the theater sees it as a show written to entertain -- only -- it is not a Bible to inform the world about how the world of The Show Business works.

• r553 - They changed the running gag of Julie singing (or, in fact, lip-synching) a super-high note and shattering glass. Instead, Liza would loudly belt out a sung "Sas-katch-e-WAAAAAAAAAAN" (which was where Liza's changed-to-Canadian Victoria was supposed to be from), and the glass shattered I guess from the force of her vibrato. It was as ridiculous as it sounds.

• Does Gypsy really count as a Sondheim musical? If it does then I concede that it and West Side Story (which would also count) make three perfects. It seems to me that Company and Passion both have the same problem of an unbelievable plot twist. Bobby's sudden transformation from a commitment-phobic bedhopper into a lonely man yearning for true love sets the stage for a great song but absolutely nothing we've seen all evening gives us any clue as to why it happens. If anything I would think Joanne's making a pass at him would be a "yecch" moment that would make him question why he spends all his time with these dysfunctional couples.

• I know I'm late to Rob Ashford's dull, dull party at the Richard Rodgers, but I had to post how delighted I was that Benjamin Walker's lean flesh was on such display for Act 1. His nice ass and great torso kept me from falling asleep during ScarJo's monotonous monologue. And I was sure that he would have slipped on a pair of underwear during the intermission, but he was obviously dressing to the left -- he appears to have a nice thick brick in his pajama pants. But the show itself sucked something awful. Anyone who told you differently is full of mendacity.

See the show again, and pay a little more attention next time ;-)

She loses her slipper at the bottom of the staircase, keeps going, then turns back to retrieve it - she and Prince get to it at about the same time. SHE grabs it and runs away - he is left with nothing and no way to find her. That's the rewritten first act curtain - not the traditional story and the little ones in the audience were angry and upset and demanding to know MOMMY WHY IS IT DIFFERENT? IT'S WRONG! DCBeane uses the lost slipper in its correct context in Act Two, but by then it's too late...
