Did You Ever Hate Your Favorite Celebrity Once You Met Them?

Were you still able to enjoy their work, or did it just leave such a bad taste in your mouth that you no longer could?

by Anonymousreply 224September 6, 2018 2:33 AM

Good topic. Up.

by Anonymousreply 1February 16, 2013 3:11 PM

Anthony Keidis was a total cunt.

by Anonymousreply 2February 16, 2013 3:13 PM

BONNIE AND CLYDE is one of my favorite films. I once met Estelle Parsons and told her how much I loved it. She looked at me and said, "Oh, you just must be filled with violence." It kinda bothered me.

by Anonymousreply 3February 16, 2013 3:16 PM

Yes, surprisingly Doris Kearns Goodwin. At a book signing - she was very brittle and condescending in a way that was not I"I am having a bad day" but instead was very "Upper East Side bitch."

by Anonymousreply 4February 16, 2013 3:18 PM

R4, did you mutter under your breath "plagiarist" as you walked away?

by Anonymousreply 5February 16, 2013 3:21 PM

Yes, John de Lancie was condescending and said some nasty things and Trekkers. The thing of it is, I told him, I understand why many actors feel that Star Trek ruined their careers -- forever typecast -- but that we all make choices and have to love with them. He just turned and walked away. A caveat: he was not my favorite celebrity.

I also met Marina Sirtis on another occasion, and she couldn't have been nicer or more gracious.

by Anonymousreply 6February 16, 2013 3:29 PM

Nanci Griffith. She was my favorite singer/songwriter. I met her a few times, and she was a little cold. She might have been having a bad day, but I never quite felt the same afterwards.

by Anonymousreply 7February 16, 2013 3:29 PM

R6, she didn't have you ejected into space?

by Anonymousreply 8February 16, 2013 3:36 PM

R3 that doesn't surprise me because she was interviewed on politics ,and if someone disagreed with her, she got extremely mean, like you are suppose to have the same view point as her, bitter bitch!

by Anonymousreply 9February 16, 2013 3:37 PM

R3, you made a mistake. You should have told Estelle Parsons how much you loved HER in Bonnie & Clyde.

by Anonymousreply 10February 16, 2013 3:39 PM

Why not, R10? She won an Oscar for that role...

by Anonymousreply 11February 16, 2013 3:46 PM

R11, reading comprehension required.

R3 told Parsons how much he loved the MOVIE Bonnie & Clyde. She did not react well. If he instead told her he loved HER IN the movie, her reaction may have been very different.

Get it yet?

by Anonymousreply 12February 16, 2013 4:01 PM

I told Mel Dufresne that he wrote the directed the greatest film of the 1990s and Gene Hackman's finest performance and he LAUGHED IN MY FACE and called me "simple-minded." I've never paid to see any of his films since, even that last one despite how much I love Amy Adams. What a dick Mel was. Fuck him.

by Anonymousreply 13February 16, 2013 4:11 PM

Estelle Parsons was one of the first female political reporters on TV

by Anonymousreply 14February 16, 2013 4:14 PM

I met Ellen Barkin once in a shrinks' office waiting room years ago. (We were seeing different shrinks in the same building)

I didn't recognize her at the time and for some reason started making small talk with her while we were waiting (which is what a lot of the 'clients' did in the waiting room at that clinic). She was beyond cold and rude. To the point where I almost said to her, "What is your problem?"

In hindsight I'm guessing she must have thought I recognized her and she wanted to be left alone, which is completely understandable. But she was so unbelievably rude and dismissive I can't stand to watch her to this day. (No "New Normal" for me.)

Word got around that she was attending sessions at this clinic in the small group that I attended there, and there were regular "Ellen sightings". Apparently she was very fucked up and grew up in a very hard scrabble rough family in Queens.

She is one tough bitch you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley. She is someone that if they said to me, "I will cut you", I would take it literally. She was that tough.

I never forgot how 'fuck you' she was towards me and I remembered feeling a palpable energy around here of toughness that I have never felt since. Like some bully on the docks/mafia tough. (Yea, Mary!)

Totally ruined her films for me ever since then. When I read that she married Ron Perelman and was running with the 5th Avenue crowd around that time I remembered thinking, "She won't last long in that world. It will bore her to pieces."

I would never want to be on her bad side and wonder if her ex was physically scared by her. She was that tough.

by Anonymousreply 15February 16, 2013 4:28 PM

Barkin is a psychotic mess. Just look at her life/career decisions. She has repeatedly been offered a pot of gold and manages to mess it up and alienate others time and time again. And for whatever acclaim she's getting for NEW NORMAL, that show's days are numbered.

by Anonymousreply 16February 16, 2013 4:40 PM

While Roseanne wasn't my favorite celebrity, I once enjoyed her show. After a horrible encounter with her, I've never watched it since.

by Anonymousreply 17February 16, 2013 4:42 PM

I would like to give a shout out to a celeb. I landed in LAX after the most turbulent flight I have ever been on. I was sick as a dog. Samuel L Jackson carried my bag and brought me a sprite from McDonald's. I had loved him since pulp fiction.

by Anonymousreply 18February 16, 2013 4:43 PM

[R17}

What happened between you and Roseanne?

by Anonymousreply 19February 16, 2013 4:45 PM

That's because you mistook Roseanne for Rosie O'Donnell, R17. I don't blame her for shrieking at you!

by Anonymousreply 20February 16, 2013 4:46 PM

Kiefer Sutherland. He was never my favorite celebrity but I did like him until I had a pretty nasty encounter with him. In retrospect, I should've expected it from such an unpleasant drunk.

by Anonymousreply 21February 16, 2013 4:49 PM

What did he do, r21?

by Anonymousreply 22February 16, 2013 4:58 PM

I did my freshman college internship at The Young and The Restless. One of our jobs was to deliver scripts. I had a pile of scripts and the protocol was knock on dressing room door, wait, knock again wait, knock third time and if no answer go in drop off script and leave.

First dressing room off the elevator is Eric Braeden. I knock and very quickly I hear "COME IN." I open the door arms full of scripts, and he is sitting on his couch takes one look at me and shouts "GET THE HELL OUT OF MY DRESSING ROOM." I said "I'm sorry I knocked and you said come in, I am just here to deliver your script." He shouted louder "I SAID GET THE HELL OUT OF MY DRESSING ROOM." So I turned around and left, I delivered the rest of the scripts, everyone else could not have been nicer. I went upstairs to the production office and gave my one script back to the PA we reported to and gave him the one script back. I told him what happened. He said "yeah Eric can be tempermental."

by Anonymousreply 23February 16, 2013 5:02 PM

Madonna.

by Anonymousreply 24February 16, 2013 5:11 PM

I am sure some of these "encounters" have been during a "bad day" or a bad time for the celebs. Some ARE cunts, I am sure, but they are all human, too. Sometimes just the umpteenth "fawning fan" or "golly, gee willickers, I just LOVED you in...." is too much. ANNOYING, perhaps, if they are in the wrong mood. I know they should be grateful that anyone gives a shit and that they have fans, period, but still. Also, some fans just ask to be slammed. Some of the posters here I can just tell are annoying as fuck and ASKED for it.

by Anonymousreply 25February 16, 2013 5:20 PM

That's very nice, R18! He sounds like a sweetheart.

by Anonymousreply 26February 16, 2013 5:22 PM

Although Kate Jackson wasn't my favorite angel, I did like her since her "Adam 12" days. One day she called from her car in a state of panic looking for my boss (I won't get into why). My boss was on an important long distance conference call, so he couldn't take her call. When I told her that, she went off, screaming at me and making noises that sounded like fists pounding on the steering wheel. I reiterated that my boss was on a long distance conference call and assured her that he would call her back as soon as he was done. She screamed, "You are so fucking stupid, you know that? You are so fucking stupid!" Later that day, she returned my boss' return call and was nice as pie to me, so sticky sweet as if all was forgiven, but she never once apologized for her behavior.

I did get to meet and deal with her in person on a number of occasions, and she was one insecure mess of a woman.

by Anonymousreply 27February 16, 2013 5:24 PM

R17 & R21, you need to give the details of your encounter! Otherwise, your post means nothing.

by Anonymousreply 28February 16, 2013 5:27 PM

[quote]Nanci Griffith. She was my favorite singer/songwriter. I met her a few times, and she was a little cold. She might have been having a bad day, but I never quite felt the same afterwards.

R7, when did these meetings occur? She went through a lot of stuff in the late 1990s through much of the 2000s.

by Anonymousreply 29February 16, 2013 5:31 PM

R28, its fiction.

by Anonymousreply 30February 16, 2013 5:33 PM

I met a Y&R star too R23. MS (Phyllis) she tried to sell me on her scientology shit. She has dvd's and all sorts of crap about in her dressing room. She is very into it. She also seems very controlling and obsessed with her character. Very strong personality. She seems to get alot of butt kissing too. Seemed like she ruled the set. Can't see a personality like that getting along with JFP. They seem to similar. This was years ago though. I'm not a big fan of hers or anything she just seemed so different than she does in interviews and tv spots. Sorry that's all I got. Would Love to meet a big movie star someday.

by Anonymousreply 31February 16, 2013 5:37 PM

Who the hell is "Mel Dufresne", and what films is r13 talking about? Is this a joke I don't get?

by Anonymousreply 32February 16, 2013 5:37 PM

R17 here. I've posted here before about my Roseanne encounter. I was walking in front of her and her entourage in the street, I didn't even know she was behind me. I dropped something I was carrying, stopped and bent over to pick it up, and she - all 500 lbs of her - came barreling through. Not only did she not have the common decency to wait three seconds for me, she almost knocked me over and made some insulting crack. I can't remember exactly what she said, but she addressed me as "butter fingers". In response, my friend who was with me (who she also had shoved aside) yelled something like "You look like you're very familiar with Butterfingers!" She turned around and, thinking I made the Butterfingers crack, glared at me for a few seconds.

I have no use for that rude and obnoxious cunt.

by Anonymousreply 33February 16, 2013 5:59 PM

R33, your friend seems quick with words. I like him.

by Anonymousreply 34February 16, 2013 6:02 PM

Cameron Diaz - She was a total bitch and refused to sign autographs.

She is fucking ugly in person btw. inside and out

by Anonymousreply 35February 16, 2013 6:04 PM

You shouldn't have been in her way, R33. One of my pet peeves is someone walking too slowly in front of me.

by Anonymousreply 36February 16, 2013 6:05 PM

R33, you had no idea ANYONE was "behind you" and so you just stopped? Kind of unaware of your surroundings MUCH?

by Anonymousreply 37February 16, 2013 6:05 PM

She wasn't my favorite but I loved Taxi. I was invited to a family dinner with Marilu Henner and she was so obnoxious and self absorbed to the point where everyone including her relatives were giving her the side eye and apologetic looks to the rest of us.

It was as if she was coked up but she proudly pronounced it was just the way she was! she didn't even drink! The reason she said she had so much energy was because of her diet which she spent the entire meal talking about. She wouldn't eat the excellent and very healthy meal her relative cooked for us. The whole night was the Marulu show and once we got away we we couldn't stop making fun of her. For months "I don't even DRINK! This it just ME!" said with great flourish became a running joke.

Oh and she spent half the night openly flirting with my girlfriend's boyfriend while her husband ignored her. He was the only person she directly talked to all night.

by Anonymousreply 38February 16, 2013 6:08 PM

At screening for Stop Loss met and was signed by JGL, Ryan Phillipe. JGL was so tiny and bird like but very nice. Surprisingly Ryan P ( given his rep) couldn't have been sweeter. Miss Tatum however was a uber a-hole, signing only for the chicks... over compensation I guess.

by Anonymousreply 39February 16, 2013 6:10 PM

[quote] She is one tough bitch you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley. She is someone that if they said to me, "I will cut you", I would take it literally. She was that tough.

lol, R15

by Anonymousreply 40February 16, 2013 6:10 PM

I used to watch Moonlighting as a kid and I loved Cybill Shepherd. I was fascinated by the fact that she was from Memphis, Tennessee, where I lived with my family. One winter Saturday my mom and I were in Sessel's Grocery Store standing in line and there Cybil was! Even as a kid I knew Cybil was a hot mess. She had on grey sweats with the elastic legs pulled up just below her knees, baby doll socks, white keds tennis shoes and a man's wifebeater. Over all that, she had on a full length mink coat and big Wayfarer sunglasses. She was yelling at some poor woman about something, and I just remember hearing the word "bitch" over and over. I was about 7 or 8 I think, and we when made it back to the car I asked my mom if that was really her. She said that maybe it wasn't. I knew though that it was. Later in life I learned that Cybil was notorious for being a true cunt all over the city.

by Anonymousreply 41February 16, 2013 6:14 PM

[quote]you had no idea ANYONE was "behind you" and so you just stopped? Kind of unaware of your surroundings MUCH?

I was walking on a street in NYC. There was foot traffic around, although it wasn't packed. So I knew there were people around, I didn't know it was Roseanne.

Yes, I stopped for a second to retrieve what I dropped. She wasn't directly behind me, she was probably five paces off. Which means she could have paused for three seconds to let me finish up and continue walking, like any normal human being would do.

by Anonymousreply 42February 16, 2013 6:30 PM

In a store, he decided to lay his hands of me and push me out of the way instead of saying a simple "Excuse me". It's not like I was gawking at him, asking him for an autograph or anything like that. I told him to his face that he was being a rude asshole. It must have caught him by surprise; I was half expecting the whole situation to become physical.

by Anonymousreply 43February 16, 2013 6:32 PM

Where to start? I have worked in the biz for 30 years so have always met these folks in professional situations -- so their nastiness is even more unforgivable. It's not like they are being pounced on in the street and nervous (I did that to Nancy Allen once and she was a bit cold but easy to forgive). Will limit it to the worst. some of which I've said before:

Marlo Thomas - just disgusting. I took pleasure in reading that butler's book and every word rang true.

Teri Garr - introduced myself at small pro meeting in conference room, told her how much I liked her work and she literally stared back and said nothing. Until I finally walked away. I could've been the producer for all she knew. Grossed me out and I never looked at her the same again. She writes in her book about meeting David O. Russell for a movie and after two minutes he says "You're not like you are in the movies, are you" and dismisses her. My sentiments exactly. (P.S. Bruce Willis was at same reading and was extremely nice and this was when he was at his peak. So liked him better after meeting him).

Tom Hulce - couldn't wait to meet him, adored him on screen, figured he'd be warm and goofy. Instead, he was from Mars, stared ahead without a word and never took his sunglasses off indoors, the sign of a true douchebag -- and this was in a casting session, not a mall!

And finally that disgusting sitcom star whose name I refuse to mention since she was such a cunt and ruined my friend's life when he married her. Awful woman. Gotta watch those America's Sweethearts types, they are almost always nightmares.

On the plus side: worked with Ryan Phillipe and he couldn't have been nicer. Joaquin Phoenix, Ricki Lake, Carrie Hamilton, Winona Ryder, Rosanna Arquette, on and on, all nice ones. They were there for a job, granted, but cool anyway.

There you go. gotta run. :)

by Anonymousreply 44February 16, 2013 6:33 PM

Cameron Diaz : I have never encountered someone who made me feel so small. I was so excited because she is one of my faves when I spotted her in the gym parking lot. I had my friend hold a camera phone while I rushed to her, asked for an autograph and photo.

Well the ugly cunt, turned around, smirked and said "i don't think so". She quickly got into her car and drove off, almost knocking my friend down in the process.

I have never watched anything she is in since then, and I hope I never meet another celeb, if this is how they act. Without fans these idiots will have no career yet they act like complete evil cunts.

by Anonymousreply 45February 16, 2013 6:43 PM

Great gossip, R44. Can you give a blind hint about the rancid sitcom star?

by Anonymousreply 46February 16, 2013 6:47 PM

You shouldn't ask a famous woman, sweaty from leaving a gym, for a photo. Just saying hi or something as you kept moving would have been an improvement.

by Anonymousreply 47February 16, 2013 6:51 PM

whatever R47, fuck off

by Anonymousreply 48February 16, 2013 6:53 PM

She didn't to be rude about it.

uGLY BITCH THAT SHE IS

by Anonymousreply 49February 16, 2013 6:54 PM

ha, sure, there was a big guessing game on another thread so I will spare all that again -- but still refuse to say her name, even though she's off the map these days, D list if best. Initials are F.F. and she was up for many Supporting Emmys in the 80s though she is one of the worst actors alive. I literally get a gag reflex in my throat if I see her on TV, ha. What that woman did to my buddy. the nicest guy alive until she got her hands on him... what a cunt.

by Anonymousreply 50February 16, 2013 6:57 PM

Frances Farmer!

by Anonymousreply 51February 16, 2013 7:00 PM

It was Faith Ford. I remember from a previous thread.

by Anonymousreply 52February 16, 2013 7:00 PM

You were the evil cunt, R45.

by Anonymousreply 53February 16, 2013 7:00 PM

Kiri Te Kanawa. Almost rude.

by Anonymousreply 54February 16, 2013 7:02 PM

R50 Fannie Flagg or Farrah Fawcett?

by Anonymousreply 55February 16, 2013 7:02 PM

Ok, Farrah. Must be lee majors because oneil is a woman beating drug addict piece of shit.

And majors is a poof. He should have never married her.

by Anonymousreply 56February 16, 2013 7:03 PM

Not one of my fave celebs, but I do have a Yaphet Kotto story. I used to do extra work on "Homicide: Life on the Street", as it was filmed in my hometown of Baltimore. On this one particular day, we were all held up in a tiny room in between shooting, and he literally didn't speak to, make eye contact with or acknowledge anyone unless they were a major part of the show (principle actors, crew, etc.). I couldn't believe someone could be so willfully ingnorant.

by Anonymousreply 57February 16, 2013 7:03 PM

See R52. Fannie is a sweetheart when she's not nervous (a little cold when she is) and I think it's safe to say the world knows she is lesbian.

Never met nor even saw Farrah Fawcett in person, alas. Paths never crossed.

by Anonymousreply 58February 16, 2013 7:08 PM

Farrah Fawcett isn't D list, she's dead. It can only be Faith Ford. No wonder she disappeared after Murphy Brown.

by Anonymousreply 59February 16, 2013 7:09 PM

R58 Kotto is literally an African Prince. And a Jewish Prince to boot....what did you expect?

by Anonymousreply 60February 16, 2013 7:11 PM

Faith Ford also did that show with Kelly Ripa and Ted McGinley for three years. The one that the lesbian Joanna Johnson created and produced.Faith and Hope I think.....

by Anonymousreply 61February 16, 2013 7:13 PM

P.S. Wanna hear some funny more recent "gossip"? I just auditioned for a very famous actor/director/mogul -- famous but not completely respected and if I said what city I am in, you would know immediately.

But I had to fill out a Non-Disclosure form before I could even read for the role, before they'd even let me in "on the lot"... and it said we are not allowed to even discuss the actor on elevators! Seriously, that's a clause.

WHAT does this actor think we're going to find out at our audition? Maybe those rumors are true. In any case, I laughed my ass off... and have to sign that thing every time I audition for him. Makes me want to sneak off and dig for dirt.

by Anonymousreply 62February 16, 2013 7:14 PM

I second the Yaphet Kotto story.. I worked on the Homicide movie and he was a complete asshole!

by Anonymousreply 63February 16, 2013 7:15 PM

R62 It's not who I think it is? He had an affair with Annabelle Sciorra and Gretchen Mol. Gretchen might be a ho BUT everyone who has worked with her has said very kind things about her, crew wise.

by Anonymousreply 64February 16, 2013 7:19 PM

You could've veiled it a bit better, R62. It was glaringly obvious that you're talking about Tyler Perry. So, what DID he ask you to do ?

by Anonymousreply 65February 16, 2013 7:20 PM

nope, no celebrity girlfriends (and did meet Gretchen Mol once, very nice, not her fault she didn't take off, ha). hence, the rumors. :)

by Anonymousreply 66February 16, 2013 7:23 PM

It probably was a "I'll show you mine if you show nme yours kind of deal." I wonder if Tyler was in drag when this all happened....

by Anonymousreply 67February 16, 2013 7:23 PM

no, audition was completely pro, no issues, no weirdness. but that disclosure thing is weird, weird, weird... especially the elevator clause. Is someone gong to knock on my door soon for me posting this?

then again, I have another one this week where I have to go to office, sign a non-disclosure form before I can get the sides/script and have to learn it on the spot... so maybe this is becoming the norm with all the social media out there. Rodriquez makes you sign that you'll send no photos from the set to facebook, etc.

by Anonymousreply 68February 16, 2013 7:28 PM

R50, if your buddy's initials are RN, then yeah, one of the nicest guys in showbiz that I've met. She, however, always came across as cold and standoffish. Would love to know how he's doing these days.

by Anonymousreply 69February 16, 2013 7:32 PM

R69 Roddy is right on that. In the old days mags like Fangoria, Starlog and other movie rags would post the pictures when the movie came out. Now every Tom,Dick and Harry wants to do so....

by Anonymousreply 70February 16, 2013 7:35 PM

R6 I'm very surprised. John De Lancie was VERY nice when I met him, he asking me questions about what I did and just being very personable. I came away loving him even more. Still sexy and that VOICE!

Now Robert Picardo, the guy that was the Dr on Voyager was a complete prick. He said that there were other projects he's doing "now, not some canceled show" but after meeting him, I never bothered looking for them or watching Voyager without yelling "cunt!" to the TV when his cranky character is on. It's not like the character was a real stretch for him.

by Anonymousreply 71February 16, 2013 7:49 PM

I read that John DeLancie appreciates Star Trek and its fans, but doesn't like some aspects of the fans and their questions. He said he doesn't like "hypotheticals" such as, "What if Q had done this instead of this, what would have happened?" He also doesn't like the ones who don't appreciate that he doesn't know every detail of Star Trek like they do. He's been in a few episodes and doesn't know all the lore or technical details.

by Anonymousreply 72February 16, 2013 7:53 PM

I'm the one who met Nanci Griffith a few times, in both professional and personal settings. It was late 90's. I suspect she just might have been having bad days, but she was cold and I was expecting soooo much more from her. Not everyone can be "on" every day. I hope she's won whatever battles she was facing. But her music got pretty bad, didn't it? I thought she was the best writer on earth, but her last few cd's have just been dreadful. I hope she finds happiness, and her muse.

by Anonymousreply 73February 16, 2013 8:03 PM

Sally Field. All I did was mention how much I ADORED her in GIDGET and especially THE FLYING NUN, and how I didn't realize they had sound and color when she started out. The bitch just glared at me!

by Anonymousreply 74February 16, 2013 8:19 PM

I had two experiences with Kiri Te Kanawa. Once she was extremely rude to a fan who was in a backstage queue and a second time when she couldn't have been more charming.

Pavarotti, on the other hand, couldn't have been colder.

by Anonymousreply 75February 16, 2013 8:20 PM

It was something about 1995, r73 -- so many of our faves just dropped the ball (or had it taken) in 1995.

by Anonymousreply 76February 16, 2013 8:23 PM

I've worked in Hollywood for years and almost every celebrity I've dealt with in the last two decades has been very nice (Keanu Reeves, Cher, Stockard Channing, Kelsey Grammer, Kathleen Freeman, Valerie Harper, Gergoia Engel, Kirsten Vangsness, Michelle Pfeiffer, Greg Girardo, Dawn Wells, Nichelle Nichols, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Simon Pegg, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Joanna Lumley, C. Thomas Howell, Michael J. Fox, Fran Drescher, Steve Zahn, Eileen Brennan, Robert Redford, Paul Newman) or at least nice enough (Marlo Thomas, Rosie O'Donnell, Geraldo Rivera, Brett Butler).

The only true jerks I've worked with were Hart Bochner, Tom Hanks, Tony Kushner, Thomas Gibson, Madonna and the execrable Roseanne.

by Anonymousreply 77February 16, 2013 8:57 PM

I've written here about this brush-with-greatness a million times, but here I go again.

I met and sat cross a dinner table from Gloria Steinem when I was an undergrad in the early 90s.

She was aloof, with an air of can't-be-bothered-with-the-little-people. She spoke only to the School Chancellor (male) who was sitting to her right.

I made a few attempts at conversation and then shut-up and listened, which, when you think about it, probably was as it should be. I was surprised at her unfreindliness.

Physically, talk about striking. High cheek bones, gorgeous hair worn in her trademark pageboy and, of, course, thin as a rail in her scarlet red velvet top, jewelry and black pants.

Recently, someone else here mentioned meeting her and they too described her in similar terms.

by Anonymousreply 78February 16, 2013 8:58 PM

Anyone and everyone that contacts Bruce Vilanche gets the same "move to LA, make something of yourself letter". After they move he never returns a fucking call or letter.

Bruce runs on the theory that SOMEONE will make it big and give him credit.

Empty sham of a human being.

by Anonymousreply 79February 16, 2013 9:04 PM

She's best friends with Marlo Thomas. 'Nuff said. vomit. More badly behaved women who should know better.

Watch the old Stuttering John interview on the street with them both if you can find it.

by Anonymousreply 80February 16, 2013 9:06 PM

Oh for God's sake, MOST celebrities are not nice, pleasant, friendly, interesting people. They tend to be totally wrapped up in themselves and expect to be cossetted and catered to every second, because they are STARS, not ordinary worthless human beings like you! They consider themselves "above" mere mortals and think they can get away with anything and frequently do.

I can understand how it can be annoying to be approached by people you don't even know but there's no need to behave like a douchebag like so many of them do.

I remember some story about Madonna where the limosine was late and she shrieked "where's the limo? Where's the FUCKING LIMO?!" She's an extreme case, but that was typical celebrity behavior.

Yes.

Meeting Armistead Maupin and Morrissey (two separate meetings) ruined my appreciation of both of them.

Morrissey I sort of expected, but not to that degree....and Maupin was the biggest, rudest asshole I've ever met.

I checked out the book Marlo Thomas' butler wrote on her ---she seems like a true Mommie Dearest cunt without the children. But also, apparently her OWN BROTHER has his own knives out for Marlo complete with his own website with HIS book on cunt-Marlo. Briefly looked at it, he hates her, some totally disabled nephew and other good shit at:

I've been reading Ken Levine's blog. He's a writer who wrote MASH, Cheers and Frasier and created (I think) Wings..among others.

Even if you don't like all his shows it's an interesting blog to check out.

He gives most people a fair shake (he was one of the sources of the recent reappraisal and appreciation of Shelley Long) but interestingly, he has only pointed out two truly negative people he's met, dealt with and/or written for/worked with.

One is Roseanne.

The other is....Fran Drescher.

Hmmmmm.......

Honey, you just described just about everyone here at Datlounge. What makes you think celebs would be any different?

by Anonymousreply 91February 17, 2013 3:06 AM

I got three (two are soaps so stop reading now if it's going to twist your pantaloons.)

Jeannie Cooper and Jess Walton. Met them both backstage at a telethon through a friend. Jess blew the introduction off... in fairness she may have been expected somewhere but Cooper was expected with her. Cooper, on the other hand, had this - forgive the parallel - Bill Clinton thing going on... when she spoke to you it was as if you were the only person in the room. Real warmth. Still remember it and it was almost twenty years ago. And I really wasn't expecting to be impressed.

Nancy Grace also did a favor for me through a friend of a friend. She went way above and beyond. I don't know how to reconcile the lady we see on TV with somebody who went to so much trouble for somebody she didn't know but it was really good of her.

by Anonymousreply 92February 17, 2013 3:09 AM

I get that stars are not their characters, and that this is their job.

I understand weary, or wanting privacy. What I don't understand is cunty behavior at appearances, signings, etc.

r92 Jeanne Cooper is a friggen saint. I posted on doing my internship at y&r - Jeanne was on a long taping called up to the office and asked for me. She said "hon i would never ask this but we are stuck here, would you be able to get me some Hagen Daz?" I told her no problem. Got it for her (funnily enough Jess Walton was in her dressing room, you might have caught her on a bad day she is really down to earth and nice)..Jeanne tried to tip me 50 bucks. I wouldn't take it she laughed and said sorry I didn't know what to do my dear..she invited me to stay and have ice cream but iI declined lol - we were told not to fraternize.

Probably not what you all mean by celebrity... but someone introduce me to Jamie from seancody and I'll let you know!

by Anonymousreply 104February 18, 2013 1:02 AM

I worked for a celebrity whose friends were all nuts, some in bad ways (Marlo Thomas). But some in good ways and Lainie Kazan was one of those. Warm, bigger than life, no attitude, would greet you with a big hug and I was just some assistant. I can't remember if it was a Bah Mitzvah or a Bar Mitzvah (it's been years) but she held it at La Cage, a drag club, and it was great. Pure Lainie.

There ya' go, R102. But never heard even lesbian rumors. Sure you got that right?

by Anonymousreply 105February 18, 2013 3:20 AM

Della, I had a very different experience with Gloria Steinem about a decade earlier than you. I was working for a small, liberal newspaper in a big right wing city, and she gave me an interview.

Even though I had charged up batteries and double-checked all my equipment, it was still one of those tech nightmares where everything goes wrong at first.

She couldn't have been more patient and kind and talked for about an hour after the tech glitches were straightened out.

We were only scheduled for 20 minutes so maybe she took pity on my youth and upset about the tech stuff. Whatever, she was just a class act.

by Anonymousreply 106February 18, 2013 3:47 AM

R89, as much as I like Fran Drescher, I can definitely see her having a cunty streak.

by Anonymousreply 107February 18, 2013 4:04 AM

r63, what was Clark Johnson like?

One of my favourite actors, he had great potential as a director, but drifted back into TV (usually crime stuff) after SWAT.

Funny about Kotto. Although I will say he had to really fight for air time on that show. I think he thought he was the star. In fairness, he had the best record coming in other than Ned Beatty who left early on.

by Anonymousreply 108February 19, 2013 6:04 AM

r104, I truly envy you.

by Anonymousreply 110February 19, 2013 8:49 PM

Lynda Carter. I was a huge fan of hers as a kid and a few years ago I saw her cabaret act. Myself and about five other "fans" waited for her at the stage door. When she came out she barely acknowledged us and said "sorry I'm not stopping, I'm tired." So, she maybe not have been a huge bitch, but there were only five of us and how long would it have taken her to sign a few autographs and take a few photos. That experience put me off her.

by Anonymousreply 111February 19, 2013 10:07 PM

Wasn't there a story a few years back that Cameron Diaz had an assistant shave her pits on set while she talked on the phone?

by Anonymousreply 112February 19, 2013 10:37 PM

R111 true, she could have stopped for 5people but maybe she didn't notice it was only 5.

Still, that situation is soo much better then others. She not only said "I'm sorry" but she even gave an explanation. I would say that was a disappointing autograph encounter but not one to hate over, if it was me.

by Anonymousreply 113February 19, 2013 11:13 PM

Still, it's Lynda Carter, for chrissake, as post-peak as one can get and doing a cabaret act where she no doubt twirls around like her bad Rita Hayworth imitation. Hardly too busy to sign the autograph of her last remaining fans.

Speaking of "Wonder Woman", I once yelled at Debra Winger (on her way up but not so famous yet) at a premier when I wanted an autograph and she said she was too tired. "Debra Winger, get your ass over here and sign this, nobody else here even knows who you are." She just glared and walked away, ha. I was very young if that helps explain it.

by Anonymousreply 116February 20, 2013 12:18 AM

I'm posting this because I recently saw a comment that said Dan Rather was closeted, but a female friend interned at CBS when he was on the nightly news and before she went was told to stay away from him because he sexually harassed every woman beneath him. She said he was a total misogynist and that the young female staff kept their distance because they knew nothing would be done if they complained and it would be the death of their career if they did. It's surprising to hear the gay rumor but I'm not saying it's not true.

I was in an elevator with Jackie Kennedy (before marrying Onasis) and she passed gas.

by Anonymousreply 118February 20, 2013 2:25 AM

re: the Cameron Diaz story... I can see the annoyance for celebrities: encounters that used to only involve a quickly scrawled signature (if the fan happened to have a pen and paper with them) now, since everyone has a camera on them at all times, involve a mandatory pose for a photo, which often stretches on as the fan's friend tries to figure out how to work the camera app on the fan's phone, a potential retake when it doesn't take or comes out blurry, then a switch up when the friend wants to be in a photo on his or her own phone... meanwhile the fans will most likely have put their arm around the celebrity for the photo, and then will often ask for a hug (or hug without asking) afterwards, which is the icing on the cake... Who wants to have to hug strangers all day? What happened to the time when a handshake was considered the limit of physical contact anyone was expected to have with a stranger? I watched a video of Michelle Obama one day surprising groups as they toured the White House, greeting the vistors individually, and it was amazing to me how many people initiated hugs with her. You're in the White House meeting the First Lady of the United States, and you think it's appropriate to hug her? I would love to have seen Jackie Kennedy's face if she had been told that part of her job description was to let strangers hug her. And with Michelle, it wasn't just teenage girls or fat fraus, grown men would hug her too, which seemed even yuckier (a woman having to be embraced by men she doesn't know).

by Anonymousreply 121February 20, 2013 3:09 AM

Uh, true, R119...but public figures "put themselves out there" more aggressively and accessibly, thanks to technology. It would make sense that a lot of people don't think it through if that public figure tries to plug an image that's really down-to-earth, fun, or approachable. Then, if the celebrity declines to have personal interactions ALL the time these days, his or her image is blown, as it becomes obvious that they are all about the money and publicity. That doesn't sink in with fans, who want to believe so badly that there's a god in human form who cares about THEM. And that's the point of marketing. These are just damn facts, and not more the fault of one party than the other.

by Anonymousreply 122February 20, 2013 3:14 AM

I met her through a mutual friend who was also a closeted actress but not nearly as famous - she was nice as can be when surrounded by people who knew she was a lesbian and were not out to report it. Very gracious, looked you in the eye like she was interested in what you were saying..a lovely person.

I have met quite a few celebs - the ones who were awful...

Arsenio Hall - just full of himself Oprah - ditto Madonna - vile, thinks most people are beneath her Faye Dunaway - bat shit crazy Matt Leblanc - possibly the most humorless person I have ever met Paul Reiser - except for Paul.... Helen Hunt - and Helen....

I could go on - there are so many people who are just miserable shits who are famous...

by Anonymousreply 123February 20, 2013 3:22 AM

Surely R111 is kidding. If not, she needs a stiletto heel through the eye socket.

by Anonymousreply 124February 20, 2013 3:41 AM

Tempest Bledsoe from "The Cosby Show" is a major bitch.

by Anonymousreply 125February 20, 2013 3:50 AM

Met her once r120. Same as r123. Very nice and gave you full attention. Yet, for some reason I got the vibe of her being a bit shy. Also saw her else where but I didn't want to bother her while she was out with family.

Ellen surprised me on how friendly she was. Out of her way to shake your hand.

Trying to recall more. Don't think I've met anyone that made me hate them .

by Anonymousreply 128February 20, 2013 3:57 AM

Thanks, R114, I was in a good mood because so many other more famous people -- Sarandon, Barbara Stanwyck, on and on -- had been so nice and cool and I'd barely lived in L.A. a month or so and was mega-impressed with celebrity. So when she shot me down, a few feet away, I wasn't having it. Ah, youth and a little beer, no doubt.

I still liked her somehow though, watched her films through the 80s. Like Dunaway, her rep preceded her and she had to be a mean/crazy bitch -- so hardly disappointed. I moved up through the industry but never worked with or even saw her again in person.

by Anonymousreply 129February 20, 2013 4:14 AM

He was not my favorite at all before this, but I liked Cheers once in a while. Ted Danson. Years ago I was working at a charity event in the press line. Oh so charming when the press was around. Told the crowd in the pre-ceremony he'd be running the event w/ them "You won't see me, but I'll be out there!" As soon as the event kicked off and the masses took off on the route, he high-tailed it to his limo. He scolded me (I'm female and was in my 20s) for walking ahead of him because the paparazzi were taking pictures and it was going to look like I was his flavor of the month. He was incensed. PUH-Lease! I was in a serious relationship w/ the same person I'm in w/ now. I was working the event: all walkie-talkied, event-logo t-shirted, credentialed up. I stopped watching anything w/ him in it since. a) he lied to the crowd and b) he was rude to me.

by Anonymousreply 130February 20, 2013 4:35 AM

I agree with R119. I think that that Cyndi Lauper show (Still So Unusual) does a good job of showing what a celeb goes through in a day. It seems that every episode shows her being followed by people asking for pictures.

I live in LA and I've seen celebs a few times and I just leave them alone. I regret it sometimes but I don't want to be annoying or maybe it's because when I first moved out here and met a celeb for the first time I did a big no-no and did the whole "I've seen you in things but can't place what it is. What have a seen you in?" He got all pissy and said "I'll have you know that I've been in over 93 films, blah blah". It was very uncomfortable. Was at a charity event and he was across an 8 or 10 top table. It was Taylor Negron. I guess I bruised his insecure ass.

by Anonymousreply 131February 20, 2013 4:38 AM

I'm an artist who used to sell at art shows in LA and SF. I once asked Marcia Lucas, when she was married to George, for her ID when she made a purchase from me. She was none too gracious about that but I had no idea who she was. George was standing right there, he was nice. I didn't learn who they were until later that day.

I have met many other celebrities, none that were jerks, at least to me any way. I talked to Elizabeth Montgomery and one of her producers for about a half an hour without knowing who they were. They were very friendly and kind. Felt stupid after I found out who they were.

by Anonymousreply 132February 20, 2013 4:44 AM

I met Bill Clinton twice and he couldn't have been nicer and genuine. Good size entourage. I didn't speak with him, but I was a few feet away from a very relaxed Senator Barack Obama. No entourage. Never would have guessed he'd be president one day.

by Anonymousreply 133February 20, 2013 4:50 AM

I really can't blame celebrities sometimes when people bum rush them for autographs and pictures. I know it's all part of being famous and they should suck it up and be grateful blah blah blah, but we're all only human and that has to be so fucking annoying if you're on your way to somewhere you have to be at a set time or if you're just having a really shitty day. I can understand why they get pissy with people sometimes. I cannot imagine being approached by people asking for my autograph, a picture with me, and telling me their whole life stories every time I stepped out in public, even to places like the grocery store or the gas station. Or, god forbid, being interrupted while I am eating with friends in a restaurant and in the middle of a conversation - now THAT'S just fucking rude, no matter who the person is. I would be an asshole sometimes too.

this is R137 again or you know that already from trolldar. I hadn't even read R131's post when I made my post about Mr. Negron when I made my post until afterward. I had read the first page of posts and then wrote mine. Having read r131's I feel a lot better knowing it wasnt just my experience, as I had felt bad and wondered for years afterwards if our interaction had been my fault. Damn that man and his ways!

by Anonymousreply 138February 20, 2013 5:51 AM

R137 that is so funny! I had to imdb him later and I could only figure I saw him in Fast Times and maybe Mouse Hunt. And he hasn't been in over 93 films. I think at the time he had 93 things on imdb but they were mostly 1 episode guest roles. Anyway, I learned a hard lesson about the fragility of celeb egos. I guess I did inadvertently insult him. I felt kind of bad for both of us. The exchange went on over a huge table of people.

by Anonymousreply 139February 20, 2013 6:01 AM

[R134] I agree with a lot of what you said. I lived in L.A. during my college years and before that I spent several summers there with my dad. I learned early on as a kid that is best to leave celebrities alone if I saw them in public. Celebs do deserve time in which they aren't bothered by people wanting autographs or to chat with them.

by Anonymousreply 140February 20, 2013 6:28 AM

My Jodie Foster story: this was pre-comeback but "Accused" had been shot but not released and I knew a kid in it. So when I saw Jodie was coming in to audition (!) for what turned out to be a very bad Martin Short movie, I knew I would have her to myself for a while in the waiting room. My job so I wasn't some stalker creep but I still was a fan and wanted a good icebreaker/question to ask her.

So she comes in, quiet but polite, and I ask if she's glad to be out of school. The studio secretary joins in too (thank god) and Jodie politely says she is glad to have graduated -- but that was four years ago.

Um... what do you say to that? What have you been doing since? I wasn't even close time-wise. So I switch topics to my friend in the movie and she smiles and quips about what a pro he was and she is being sarcastic. this is getting better and better and she, through no fault of her own, intimidates the shit out of me, does that direct thing of staring back and offering nothing as you squirm. So I tell her to let me know if she needs anything and hide until she is in the office reading.

Later that same "pro" actor used a letter of rec from her to get his U.S. citizenship. It was signed "Jody Foster". Umm... But I didn't say anything and apparently the board didn't catch a movie star misspelling her own name so it worked and I felt bad. But all was forgiven once the movie came out anyway.

ahhh, life in Hollywood circa 1988.

by Anonymousreply 142February 20, 2013 9:08 AM

I worked as a page at CBS when I started out. They sent me to a press junket and my job was to get the mic to the reporters asking questions and I was told in no uncertain terms , stay out of the way and do not let go of the mic. People grab the mic and then they talk and move their hands and mic and you can't hear the question.

So first up was Rob Reiner. The room was packed and not a lot of space to move. As the questions were asked I moved to each person and sure enough everytime they would try to grab the mic from me and I would grip it and hold it tight as I was contorting to stay out of the way. This seemed to amuse Rob as he watched me move from person to person, he would call people far away from each other just to watch me run and bend down as I struggled to hold on to the mic. Finally he stopped and addressed me. He was trying to be funny and said "I am just fascinated watching this guy move around the room" and people laughed. He asked me why I was contorting and holding the mic. At this point I was fed up and spoke into the mic and said "I was told to stay out of the camera shot and not let go of the mic so you we can get the questions on audio."

He laughed and said "well all I see is you running around the room so you are not doing a great job of being inconspicuous." Not thinking I fired back "if you could call the people close to the last person asking the question it would be a lot easier." and I got a laugh. He did not like that.

That was the end of the QA and he went to the CBS team shooting it and I was sent home. Dick.

Re R141

The Accused was filmed in Vancouver and the actor in question was Canadian.

by Anonymousreply 144February 20, 2013 1:16 PM

I also used to work on press junkets in Hollywood. We used to get warnings about who would be a decent human being and who was a piece of shit, but it always seemed like if someone was supposed to be a sweetheart they were an asshole and vice versa.

Most of the celebs seemed extremely insecure.

Hollywood is a real shark tank, and the people around them in their entourage were always jockeying for greater influence. This didn't always help the celeb, as it seemed like if it meant watching another assistant fall flat on their face that the rest were all too willing to let something bad happen.

The other thing that I remember was all the weird demands. The press junkets that I was on didn't have stuff like private craft services for the VIPs, crew and everyone grabbed muffins or whatever from the same table. Of course, we in the crew had to wait for the VIPs to pick over it first. I remember we were instructed one time that there would be one doughnut on the table, and it was only for the actress from the TV show we were promoting that day. She had to have her one doughnut of the day, but didn't trust herself to stop at one, so everyone else had to do without. And you'd get stuff like don't look the talent in the eye, don't talk when the talent is in the room, etc. etc. Some days it was the best job I ever had and some days it was just too much bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 145February 20, 2013 1:27 PM

[quote]Most of the celebs seemed extremely insecure.

Well, that’s a fucking given. Though most people are insecure about something, even some performers will tell you that performers take the cake on this one.

But I don’t know. They all seem to defend and support each other so fiercely. Are even celebrity best friends secretly threatened by each other? Because they all seem to take it out on “the little people.”

They also can’t tolerate it when a “normal” person even implies something negative about them (this is all the more clear since Twitter and social networking). For all the fan adoration they receive, they make a huge production about minority remarks that are totally subjective, e.g. “I don’t like _____’s acting.” They seek it out and make themselves victims unto even politely-stated remarks. Then, they’ll turn around and mock a fellow celebrity or post a photo of someone they see on the street who they think is strange.

Furthermore, you would think they would not be threatened by criticism, since they’re rich, have the best connections possible, and probably had to endure some intense criticism in order to get where they are.

But I guess actors and fame-seeking performers are narcissists by definition, so it would make sense for it to include self-loathing that presents as self-love.

The fame/entertainment machine is fucking terrible. If it didn’t exist, TV/film actors could get paid what they really deserve, which is about $10 per hour. Theater actors would make a little more; pop singers could make the national average with travelling comps.

by Anonymousreply 146February 20, 2013 2:41 PM

by Anonymousreply 147February 20, 2013 2:41 PM

The linked story is from a few years ago, but Cameron Diaz has a reputation for being awful to autograph seekers. Where is her career, by the way?

I was reading an interview of one of the "stars" of New Girl who was complaining about being approached by fans. This isn't even Zoe, it's one of the guys. What a douche.

Truthfully, the only "celeb" I've ever met was Weird Al Yankovic at a charity rock and roll bowl-a-thon back in the eighties. He was very nice by the way and seemed very interested in me. I'm a female and was pretty damn hot back then if I say so myself.

I honestly don't think I'd immediately recognize a celebrity on the streets. I'd probably think to myself they looked vaguely familiar but I wouldn't be able to place them.

Who was r148? They're all so new to stardom, you'd think the novelty of signing autographs hadn't worn off yet.

Janet Jackson. I was at one of the VMAS, maybe 2001, and I was a seatfiller. I filled in a seat next to Tyrese and he was super nice but they insisted that 3 chairs between me and Janet stay empty and I actually saw her ignore and turn away from a 10 year old girl during commerical who asked her for her autograph. She just acted like she wasnt there and her bodyguard moved the girl away. I was appalled.

Cybill Shepherd held an event at my dad's business. Although she was nice enough to me when I met her, she was a right bitch to all the staff from the moment she turned around. Swore I'd never act like that to wait staff ever.

Sat next to Grant Show a few months back on a commercial flight. When I finally got the balls to say hi and introduce myself, he just rolled his eyes and looked the other way mumbling something. So I semi mumbled but clear enough that he could hear me "... lucky anyone remembers you..." He gave me daggers, and we didn't make eye contact for the rest of the trip. I still would've fucked him.

Why would a 10 year old girl be at the VMA's? Not exactly a childrens show.

by Anonymousreply 156February 21, 2013 1:59 AM

#150 I agree. She wasn't friendly, but there was a buzz around them so I expect she was aware people recognized them. She was perturbed that I dare ask to see her ID.

I also met Anthony Newley about that time. I was having a pleasant conversation with him when my mother, who was there with me, recognized him and went all girly, giggly, and fawningly embarrassing on him. I was appalled of course, because I am cooler than that. Well, a slight bit cooler anyway.

by Anonymousreply 157February 21, 2013 5:45 AM

I didn't really ever admire her but....

I once saw Diane Sawyer on the street in NY getting into a limo. I dared to look at her directly I guess and she screamed "YOUNG MAN, WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT!!!!" She then got in her car and was all flustered and keep looking back at me and clutching her jacket closed and muttering stuff like "how dare you" as if I were undressing her with my eyes.

I guess she'd had a few drinks. She was genuinely insane.

Cybill Shepard: Mid to late 1980s I worked retail in a nicer dept. store. A woman calls and wanted info on her charge account. As anyone knows, we cannot give out that info over the phone to anyone, not at the store level, at least not back then. She sounded very, very annoyed and got all pissy, didn't want to wait in line, yada yada. I swear it sounded like CS. Awhile later, she comes in to the desk where I worked for the info. I knew who it was, and she was NOT happy. She looked/acted like she didn't like it, but hey, rules are rules. They don't bend 'cuz' of what you do for work. She was absolutely too beautiful to look at directly.

Same place, Woody Allen. What a jerk. He wanted to cash a check without ID. No way. I didn't recognize him without the trademark glassed, not that it would have mattered. Besides, he didn't use the name WA, apparently that is a stage name. Whatever. How do I know it isn't a look-a-like with forged ID or something similar? I wasn't about to get fired over cashing a check w/o ID, and I don't care who it is or what they do for a living. They aren't going to pay my bills if I get fired. He DID NOT like it when I asked for ID, and muttered, "I guess I should have worn the glasses." The woman behind him had obviously recognized him. This is when I figured out who it was. Big F'ing deal.

I waited on several others. Always interesting. Those 2 stand out. Usually they were aloof, but polite. I NEVER asked for an autograph or anything stupid like that.

by Anonymousreply 159February 21, 2013 11:03 AM

Linda Wertheimer of NPR was one of my all-time favorite radio personalities until I met her. I was actually trying to help her find a place and she refused to take my directions. She intentionally took another route even as I tried to tell her the route she was taking would be confusing.

Little did she know a friend of mine was at her destination. This friend reported that she was bitching about how I gave her incorrect directions. I gave her perfect directions and she irrationally refused to use them. She got lost as a result. Bitch.

And then I saw her a year later and she was hostile to me again, even as I politely and competently tried to help her.

I can't stand to hear her on NPR anymore.

By the time we got into the '90s, I was damn ready to get out of casting and into my true career... so I often block a lot of those movies out. But was driving today and remembered a funny moment in a waiting room for what became a long forgotten John Cusack movie.

I don't know if I appreciated it then but you'd have days where it was normal to have Miranda Richardson scowling for being kept waiting too long while Judd Nelson used the office phone for a personal call (which pissed the director off and blew his shot), a new star walking in every ten minutes. they almost NEVER get to stop auditioning.

Favorite moment: Hunky Dylan McDermott moves to introduce himself to hottie Virginia Madsen and knocks a bottle of cranberry juice all over her white dress. Kyle MacLachlan races to get a rag and fizzy water, the whole room involved. Hunk or not, Dylan is sweetly embarrassed and Madsen is completely gracious (thank god it wasn't Miranda!) and MacLachlan wants to help so much -- that it only made me like all three even more.

None of them got the movie and were better off for it because it truly sucked. But I was glad when all three went on to bigger stuff later.

[quote]BONNIE AND CLYDE is one of my favorite films. I once met Estelle Parsons and told her how much I loved it. She looked at me and said, "Oh, you just must be filled with violence." It kinda bothered me.

I totally agree with Estelle Parsons about R3. It's an extremely violent movie to choose as one of your favorites. I would probably shy away from you too.

Yeas ago a friend and I encountered Mr. Ed in Central Park. He didn't say anything as my friend and I gushed about how much we enjoyed his television series--in fact, he barely made eye contact. When my friend asked what work he had coming down the pike, Mr. Ed took a dump right in front of us--still not saying one word. And he then proceeded to trot off in another direction. We were both speechless.

You probably make about $9 an hour and have clearly never spent much time around anybody famous.

by Anonymousreply 168February 22, 2013 2:55 AM

I work as an entertainment journalist and have a million stories about who's nice and who's not.

Sometimes you just get people on a bad day and, in fairness to the celebs, I sure have different encounters with them today than I did when I was young and eager.

I'll remember the ones who were truly nice with great fondness and the pricks and bitches who were lousy, well, I hope they end up on a web comedy that nobody watches.

Ha! Please. If the fame factor didn't exist? TV and film actors would have to do even far less work than they do already, which is not a terrible amount compared to other professions. Fine, give them a $2.50 shift differential for night shoots.

R141, I'm so confused on what you are trying to say. She intimidated you but not on purpose, just you being intimidated on your own accord... But she was nice and chatted with you.

Then she may have not gotten along with one of your friends but she helped him out anyways by helping get him a US citizenship. You felt bad because? Can't be all that bad since he got it.

And once the movie came out everything was okay? For who? You? Your view of her ... view on him?

by Anonymousreply 175February 22, 2013 8:12 AM

[R161]- I've always wanted to believe that Miranda Richardson was sweet as pie. No?

by Anonymousreply 177February 22, 2013 1:16 PM

As sweet as a Sweenie Todd pie.

by Anonymousreply 178February 22, 2013 1:25 PM

Heh. I love the fact that the JanBot hasn't noticed R152.

by Anonymousreply 179February 22, 2013 5:01 PM

R141: I was intimidated by her because the conversation wasn't going well (my fault) and she had that direct eye contact thing that made me squirm. Not remotely bitchy but not gushy either. And it was Jodie Foster whom I'd grown up with and was a little in awe of (that didn't happen often). Everything I was asking her was going South and thank god I didn't tell her that her brother was my first celluloid crush, that would've gone over like a ton of bricks.

As for second part, she did not help that actor she thought was less than pro, the letter was clearly a forgery since it was signed Jody (not Jodie). It was obvious, especially after what she had said, but I said nothing to the boss, let it go.

That's all. Still love her movie work, she didn't turn me off.

by Anonymousreply 180February 22, 2013 5:27 PM

Ooh. Thanks for the clear up r141. I completely missed what you were saying about the letter. So HE forged Jodie's name to help get a US citizenship and you saw through that. Ha, I guess now we know why she didn't think to highly of him.

Thanks.

Clay Aiken.

by Anonymousreply 183February 22, 2013 6:30 PM

Someone asked about Jodie Foster.

I live in New Haven and saw her when she was going to Yale. I was walking by her - she was standing in front of Burger King at the time - and I did a double take realizing who she was. She saw me and just smiled so sweetly. Seemed like a really nice person. I just smiled back because I didn't want to bother her. But I've always remembered that.

by Anonymousreply 184February 22, 2013 6:40 PM

R174, you're not being insulting. Yeah, I figured that one out along the way.

I've been around these people and some have made me feel like I'm their (in the words of Martin Short) 'new! best! friend!'

But I'd take them over the outwardly hostile nasty ones any day.

It was a sad day when I realized it was just people being friendly on a business level; a few abused their charm, or maybe they just fool themselves in the process.

But in 99.9999% of the cases they'll always put their own feelings first.

This is cruel, but I don't think tney know how to be friends with people.

Now, I just take my interactions with them with a grain of salt. I take them for what they are -- or aren't -- pleasant encounters with (essentially) co-workers.

by Anonymousreply 185February 22, 2013 6:41 PM

I've only met one such person, i.e., an actor of whom I was a fan, and he couldn't have been nicer. I was walking up 8th Avenue in Chelsea as he was walking down, and he realized, given the expression on my face, that I recognized him.

So we chatted for just a moment. I told him how much I liked his work -- he played one of my favorite characters on a TV show -- and he thanked me, and we each went about our day.

I didn't get the sense that he was gay, or that we could have taken it upstairs, if you will. Not that I wouldn't have, of course.

by Anonymousreply 186February 22, 2013 6:47 PM

I do have to say I was lucky enough to meet my all-time favorite and he was extremely nice.

It was hard to hide my infatuation during the interview (long story).

by Anonymousreply 193February 23, 2013 12:28 AM

I went to visit a friend from England who was staying at a hotel in New York.

This was the early days of video cameras and she wanted to take some footage of me to include in her little film to take back to show her sister, also a friend, in London.

So, I suggested we took the camera up to the swimming pool on the roof.

So, we're checking out the pool, camera whirring and I notice Richard Dreyfus there with a little girl.

So we film him a little and then get in the lift and my friend says 'Is that your little girl?' and he gave her a look as if to say 'I don't fucking know you...'

I always liked him, but he came across as a creep.

He was in a very public place and didn't need to be so hostile.

I've made a long story out of a short story.

Otherwise, most my public encounters with celebs have been very nice. There have been many because I tend to recognise people, when others don't. A lot of the female ones have checked me out and/or flirted with me, but I'm homosexual, so, no go baby, sorry.

I live in London now and often see Vanessa Redgrave who always looks very freaked out and worried about being recognised. I've even noticed her in her car. Still she looks worried. Maybe she thinks I'm a 'zionist hoodlum'.

Same with Catherine Deneuve. Very prima donna-ish about being recognised behind her dark glasses. She should get over herself.

Can we tell secondhand stories?

My father, when he was a teen in the '70s, worked as a movie usher at a theater in Miami Beach. I'm not sure why, but at that time, it was common for movie stars to visit theaters when they had a movie opening. Sammy Davis, Jr, was a nice guy, handed $100 bills to all the ushers; Robert Wagner acted very courteously, too. The only real asshole he encountered was Warren Beatty, who threw a tantrum because the letters of his name were not large enough on the marquee.

No wonder they flopped - they were wasting their marketing budget on overtipping movie ushers.
