[bold] FBI: Man slapped crying 2-year-old on Delta flight [/bold]
A Delta Air Lines passenger faces a federal assault charge after allegedly slapping a fellow traveler’s crying 2-year-old son to quiet the child as their flight arrived in Atlanta, according to an FBI affidavit.
Joe Rickey Hundley of Hayden, Idaho, was on Flight 721 from Minneapolis, Minn., to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on Feb. 8 and sitting next to Jessica Bennett of Minneapolis when her son began crying from the change in cabin pressure as the plane descended, Bennett told FBI Special Agent Daron Cheney in the Feb. 12 affidavit.
Bennett said she was trying to get the child to stop crying, but he continued. “According to Ms. Bennett, a male passenger next to her in Row 28, Seat A, later identified as Joe Rickey Hundley, told her to shut that” [racial slur] “baby up. Ms. Bennett stated that Joe Rickey Hundley then turned around and slapped [JS] in the face with an open hand, which caused the juvenile victim to scream even louder.”
Efforts were made Friday to reach Hundley for comment. In an interview with The Smoking Gun website, which first reported the incident, Hundley denied striking the child or using a racial slur.
Delta spokesman Morgan Durrant told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution flight attendants separated the passengers after the incident and that the crew arranged for law enforcement to meet the flight when it landed.
The criminal complaint said several people on the plane tried to assist the mother, including Todd Wooten, who told the FBI agent he heard the derogatory language coming from the rear of the plane and went to investigate. Wooten told the agent he witnessed Bennett’s child being assaulted, according to the criminal complaint.
Bennett told the FBI agent the slap left a scratch below the child’s right eye. In an interview with The Smoking Gun, Bennett said Hundley “reeked of alcohol.” She said Hundley had several alcoholic drinks during the two-hour flight and was seen stumbling. Bennett said she was traveling to Atlanta for a funeral.
Hundley told The Smoking Gun that he asked the mother to “quiet the child.” Hundley said he was traveling to Atlanta to visit a hospitalized relative and was “distraught” on the flight. He said he’d had “a single alcoholic drink.”
The Smoking Gun identified Hundley as president of an aircraft parts manufacturer headquartered in Hayden.
Our society is just fucking going downhill. When grown men are physically assaulting toddlers on public transportation, you just know that we're done.
And R1 is a case in point.
I verbally flipped out on some mama on a PHL-MUC flight; bitch had no control of the whining and the seat kicking ...for HOURS I finally lost it. After my episode, things calmed down in the row behind.
Our society went downhill when people started carrying infants onto planes, for free!
I'm with R1 and R7, R5. Toddlers don't belong on planes.
R3, it's ignorant and offensve for you to describe the person as an "eldergay". Quite apart from the fact that you use the word as a pejorative term, there's no evidence he's gay of any variety.
Hideous that a word is used here to insult and abuse a group of gays, one measure of decent behaviour is that you don't project your inner self-loathing onto others. Just get therapy for those feelings.
Toddlers don't belong on planes.
Neither do unhinged racists and child beaters.
The mama ought to sue Delta over this one: "She said Hundley had several alcoholic drinks during the two-hour flight and was seen stumbling."
R9 = racist eldergay.
probably a pedo, too
I remember reading a story somewhere about Paul Lynde on a flight with a girl who was running up and down the aisles. Supposedly he told the girl's mother, "If you don't make her sit down, I'm gonna fuck her."
I doubt that child only began crying at the end of the flight.
The mama ought to sue Delta over this one
She should seek criminal as well as civil damages against Hundley, for this.
Criminal for the assault against her child, and civil because he must be rich, being the President of an aircraft parts manufacturing company. The guy must be loaded (in more ways than one).
Make him pay dearly, and show him that this sort of behavior is unacceptable in a civil society.
r14, considering how nasty a drunk he could be, I wouldn't be surprised if that child was male.
r12, that's the key to the story for me. I figure that most people walking around are racist against someone (black ppl, too), but they don't act on it because of backlash.
The alcohol just brings out the personality.
Are they considered liable for overserving, like a land server? Any FAs here?
Thankfully, people can't bring guns on plains or Mr. Idaho likely gun nut would have just blown the kid away.
A friend and I were eating dinner a few weeks ago when a young man and woman were seated at the next table. With them was a cute little girl who looked like she was probably about 3 or 4 years old. They hadn't been seated long before the child began periodically letting out ear-piercing shrieks.
I was facing the loathsome little beast, so I fixed her with a evil withering stare. She was obviously self-conscious and she squirmed around a bit, but she shut up and was unable to break the stare. The silence was wonderful.
I truly don't care if evil children like her need therapy when I get through with them. If their parents won't deal with them, I will.
Having said that, I would never touch anyone's child. There are more effective ways of dealing with them.
R14, I read that story a couple of time a few years ago on DL.
I'm no fan of babies, planes, babies on planes, etc., BUT: dear God in heaven, you don't hit someone's baby. (shouldn't hit your OWN baby.
Something I think should be done: QUIT SERVING ALCOHOL ON PLANES. Just stop it!
Toddlers don't belong on planes.
Now that's harsh. There's plenty of room for the little nippers if they're in their plastic kennels down in the hold next to the daschunds and the cats.
Idaho is full of White supremacists. I can't think of many more annoying things than a screaming baby on a plane, but that man is evil
"Something I think should be done: QUIT SERVING ALCOHOL ON PLANES. Just stop it!"
Why? One is paying for it. Given the state of travel on U.S. airlines today, alcohol is the least one should expect.
Get a load of the leering eldergay at R19. Did you hiss at the little girl, too?
R19 reminds of something I read on DL -- someone posted that he/she had been known to stick his/her tongue out at a child that was acting up.
Apparently it is so unexpected and unnerving for the kid it stops them in their tracks.
I've wondered if this is true but have never tested it out myself. Funny image though. I can imagine the kid would be ... wtf?
You cannot put your hands on someone else's child. This guy would have been screwed with or without the racial slur. I do agree the booze brought out the real him though.
where are the real men at? men have become more like women and women have become the men. i wonder, if you're a man and you can't handle a crying child then what else can't you handle. just like mcqueary who saw a child being raped and did absolutely nothing. what would a woman have done? and mcqueary is a strong, virile, football player of a man. i remember being on a flight from chicago to orlando and i sat there the whole way with a child kicking the back of my seat for 3 hrs straight. and you know what i did? nothing. because if you're a child and your feet doesn't touch the ground, you're suppose to swing them. that's what kids do. they also cry when being confined in pressurized cabins at 30,000 ft. for a man to slap a child, you're a complete pussy. manhood is officially dead.
I would have wanted to slap the two year old but I would have restrained myself...maybe I would have slapped the mother?
Aren't the drinks on planes free?
R29, on domestic flights, they are free in first and business classes. They charge for them in coach. On international flights, basic alcoholic drinks (wine and beer) are free, I believe.
Crying children as the plane descends is commonplace and almost acceptable. Sometimes my ears pop so bad on planes that *I* want to cry.
But it's the little monster who shriek and squeal for the entire long haul that really need to be tossed in the bottom of the plane.
I remember flying 14 hours from London to Johannesburg and this little boy sitting directly behind me (of course!) didn't stop SCREAMING and flailing his arms around. Finally around midnight he stopped for a while and I thought the creature fell asleep but then he'd let out a deafening sound not unlike an animal's, waking up the whole cabin. Then he just kept going silent for a while and then shrieking. I never had such a miserable ride in all my life. You would think the parents of the child would scold him to stop or at least pretend to care in the slightest.
Not. A. Word.
Or dose him with for Benadryl at the very least, R31.
I confess. The little brat had it coming.
# 23 is right. The Arian Nations compound was located in Hayden, though put out of business when they were sued by The Southern Poverty Law Center,in 2000, for $6.3 million. The crazy who shot up the Holocaust Museum in D.C., in 2009,killing a black guard, had lived in Hayden. In 2010, a Hayden resident built a huge KKK snowman,in his front yard, along with having 2 flags on display - a Nazi SS flag, and Arian Nation flag. Not against the law, but you tell me if the fact the 'slapper' was from Hayden, is just a coincidence.
Here's the only "aircraft parts" business in Hayden, Idaho...
RE 35 - Do they make only white airplane parts there ?
Isn't gay marriage legal in Idaho?
Crying children as the plane descends is commonplace and almost acceptable. Sometimes my ears pop so bad on planes that *I* want to cry.
The thing to do is ask the pediatrician how to make children comfortable ( which keeps them quiet ) on a plane. Mine said to bring Cheerios and let her have them when the plane descended. Worked like a charm. Along with the look of doom if she was loud and obnoxious. never a problem while traveling. It's not that hard to keep them quiet if you plan and have diversions.
R! Really? Two year olds cry you sicko. Deal with it. You cried when you were two as well asshole. The guy called the baby a nigg*r baby"
So you are saying you LIKE that? A hole.
I was on a trans Atlantic flight when an infant was screaming and the mother was frantic as well.
There were professional singers on the flight and one of the female singers spoke to the mother for a bit and convinced the mother to hand the baby over to a guy with the lowest voice. The guy sang low pitched rumbles softly with the baby on his chest.
The baby stared up at him for a bit and went to sleep. When he stopped the baby started screeching again so back into his arms the baby went.
Eventually he wandered up and down the aisles for hours with the baby sound asleep on his chest while he hummed and sang at an almost inaudible (to us) level, and the mother was sound asleep as well.
Sort of like horse whisperers.
The Benadryl idea is genius. Why don't more parents think of this??? It's harmless to the children if they just give them the proper dose amount.
Bc benadryl can have the opposite effect. Northern Idaho is beautiful and the open racism including a lady in a bar bragging that her son was in jail for shooting a n___ was the most terrifying two days of my life. Wtf were Demi and Bruce doing there?
I told an endlessly screaming toddler on a train to "Ssssh, you're in a public place" and the train ERUPTED!
Five, six, seven people started abusing me.
You would have thought I'd taken my dick out and slapped the kid across the face with it.
Although parents have abdicated responsibility for managing their children in public places, including confined pubic places, apparently even gently bringing children to account, is ABSOLUTELY VERBOTEN.
Never mind that 30 years ago strangers thought nothing of doing it: now there's a new entitled generation who consider it child abuse!
The simple answer to a crying child is: the parents put their hand over its mouth. A child quickly realises it can't breath and cry at the same time. It's like a training a puppy. Cry, hand on mouth, cry, hand on mouth. They quickly learn.
And I will add, it's about setting expectations of behaviour. NO child is too young that it can't learn, through the simple application of hand-on-mouth, that crying endlessly for no reason won't be tolerated. Trouble is, today's parents never establish such expectations.
Joe Ricky Hundley? Joe Ricky? What is this deliverance? Which coincidentally was actually filmed in Georgia the same state this occurred in
r44 is absolutely correct. This behavior happens because parents are too lazy to reprimand their kids every time something like this happens. Kids are constantly testing the boundaries of what they can get away with and it is up to parents to firmly and consistently discipline their children for poor behavior and reward them for good behavior.
Bad attitude = bad treatment.
Good attitude = good treatment.
"Idaho is full of White supremacists."
Before I saw the picture of what looked like John McCain's "peepaw," the word "Idaho" pretty much summed it all up for me. Old racist fuck is enraged President Blackenstein was elected AGAIN, so he takes out his drunken rage on a toddler. Because he's such a "brave maverick" and all that other cowardly bullshit.
And if the moron up-thread really believes this guy could be a Democrat--he really lives in his own little bubble.
To the folks saying that "babies cry" and "kids kick the backs of seats, it's what they do"... Fuck that. Flying is torture enough as it is without putting up with that nonsense.
There was a time not so long ago when parents didn't try to bring their little terrors everywhere with them. Now you'll see everything from infants on up at a midnight screening of an R rated movie.
To the parents out there... YOU decided to have children, so if that stops you from going on as many trips as you'd like, or dining at a nice restaurant sometimes, well, that was YOU'RE choice. The rest of us shouldn't be punished for it.
And if a kid did make it out with the parents to a nice restaurant when I was growing up, then they knew damn well to keep their fucking mouth shut or suffer the consequences. And the ashamed parent would yank them up and take them out of the dining area at the first sign of trouble.
If this makes me sound like an "eldergay" so be it... and yeah, I'd hiss at your fucking little brat if it would make him/her shut up, since you parents can't seem to be bothered to teach basic manners these days!
"The simple answer to a crying child is: the parents put their hand over its mouth. A child quickly realises it can't breath and cry at the same time. It's like a training a puppy. Cry, hand on mouth, cry, hand on mouth. They quickly learn."
This method works best if you gently pinch the nostrils closed at the same time, R44.
I LOVE that some of you deluded eldergays are trying to defend some drunk old white fuck slapping a kid and calling him a nigger.
That's what you have become.
The evil hissing queen @ R19 really creeps me out--giving children the stink eye.
Jon Robin Baitz has announced he will be writing and producing a mini-series based on this incident entitled 'The Slap'
It will focus on the fall out and aftermath of the incident
Wy is it ok for blacks to use ceacker and faggot but a white cant use jigger?
It is always those that don't have children and don't know anything about them, telling others how to control them.
It's not okay to use faggot, moron. Cracker is hardly much of a slur, but it is not okay in any way to use it on a stranger, nevermind a little kid. Moron.
That pos. I hope he gets the maximum sentence for assault and keeps getting beat up by strong black men for years on end.
I refuse to be seated in row 28.
Nothing but trouble.
I would put good money he's also an "automatic seat recliner"....
Daily Mail has pictures of the mother--she's a white lady. I'm sure the fact that the kid was biracial made this guy even angrier. The Aryan Nation shits really hate racial "mixing." Hope he gets a year in jail (maximum sentence from what I've read) and loses everything from a lawsuit.
Was it a white mom with a black kid? That really sends those types over the edge.
r59 answered my question just as I hit send
Maybe he was a fan of Labyrynth and wanted to make it pee.
But really, where is the logic here? Slapping a baby isn't going to get it to stop crying.
I didn't know it was a racial thing...but in this fucking world, what isn't? If there was a God who created us, I guess it was a sick joke on his part, making us different colors and then giving us mean, pea brains.
Can't there be ONE day when a testosterone ape doesn't act up?
Can't there be ONE day when a testosterone ape doesn't act up?
No, there cannot.
Ok, which of you bitches is my mother?
Heinous man. Should be prosecuted, regardless of how many irritating children we've all flown with.
Call me old fashioned, but I was taught to never hit a woman/girl or a baby (and use my fists and kicks against guys only to defend myself) and never use racist slurs. I also don't drink too much or take drugs since I know they will cloud my judgement. Some people really want the drama to come to them and if it doesn't come to them the people go to the drama.
Thank you, R52. It takes a village, you know. If parents choose to ignore bad behavior, those around them need to step up.
That nasty child deserved worse than stink eye.
I remember reading a story somewhere about Paul Lynde on a flight with a girl who was running up and down the aisles. Supposedly he told the girl's mother, "If you don't make her sit down, I'm gonna fuck her."
Can you imagine if someone did that now? The FAA would have fighter jets scrambled to escort the plane to the nearest airport. He'd be arrested and probably convicted of some type of sex crime and be forced to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
Although that is a pretty creepy thing to say to anyone much less a child
that's the key to the story for me. I figure that most people walking around are racist against someone (black ppl, too), but they don't act on it because of backlash.
If someone in the public eye (a repug) called the President or the First Lady the N word and one major news organization didn't immediately condemn it and they took the opinion while they don't agree with what was said, it is the repugs first amendment right to free speech, it would open the flood gates. Almost every senator and congressman would have gone on the record saying the same thing about the President by the end of the week.
Um, no, R71.
I hate republicans. Ee should find a plague we can infect them with.
That man is lucky the little n****r baby didn't pull a gun out of his diaper and blow his head off.
R44, and if that doesn't work, be sure to pinch the nostrils in addition to covering the mouth.
I don't suppose I need to tell you what I think.
That should be an effective technique, R75. They do tend to shut up when they can't breathe.
I've never understood why airlines didn't have a family section in the back of the plane for anyone flying with kids under like six. They board first anyway. Just walk on all the way back. I'm sure there'd still be tantrums and crying but the parents could all support each other and leave the rest of us at least a little peace.
I think when stuff happens on a plane that's their purview.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Saturday that AGC Aerospace and Defense had suspended 60-year-old Joe Rickey Hundley, of Hayden, Idaho, as president of its Unitech Composites and Structures.
Someone named Joe Rickey Hundley shouldn't be president of anything, except maybe his local KKK chapter.
DL fave Gio Benitez is covering this for ABC News!
Virginia court records show Hundley pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault in 2007
I really like r78's idea. I wonder why the airlines have never thought of that.
To the person who asked if airlines are liable for over-serving alcohol: The courts in past cases have found that no, an airline does not have the same liability for over-serving, because, unlike say, a bar in a city, it is not a reasonable assumption that an intoxicated passenger is going to get behind the wheel of a car after getting off of their flight. He/she may be being picked up, connecting to another flight, going to a hotel by van, etc. Over-serving someone of legal age who does not (or is not reasonably assumed to) get behind the wheel of a car is not considered negligence by the serving establishment, legally speaking. The majority of airline passengers enjoy the ability to have a cocktail or two, or even three, and airlines are very reluctant to have their flight attendants viewed as "enforcers", therefore, have little to no training on how to handle these situations. To be competitive many airline practices have created an unintentional "hands off" policy of enforcement of rules, so front-line customer service staff maintain a "friendly, approachable" image. Of course, the result of such practices can erupt into disturbances such as this one. That is of course, if it was apparent that he should not have been served, which gets back to the point of who's going to stick their neck out and make that call.
Brilliant idea, r78.
Everywhere I go; restaurants, airplanes and airports, coffee shops, stores, even movie theaters, there are babies crying and toddlers running amok with their parents oblivious, tuning them out after a lot of practice and leaving the public to deal with their "aren't-they-cute" offspring. I can see where some people can lose their patience. The slapping incident was wrong and the perturbed passenger should have dealt with the mother.
The mother is white, the father is light hispanic, and the kid looks black.
The kid is adopted.
Oh, never mind.
White women with black or mixed-race children always set those lunatic racist types off. They just go completely batshit over that, especially if the white woman is attractive and blonde.
I'm a man and I could never imagine hitting a child or a woman, but I have to say there have been several times in my life where I would have loved to smack the living shit out of another man, but I always managed to restrain myself from doing so.
Many white males on dl ARE cheering this dude on
R89 has it right. Dude should have slapped the mother so hard that her seatback would not return to its full upright position.
I'm sick of parents who feel entitled to force the misery of their little terrors on the rest of us.
But I wouldn't have sat there in the first place. I'd have walked up to that aisle, seen her sitting there with that screaming little windbag on her lap, and I'd have turned to the newest stewardess and said OH. HELL. NO.
That flight wouldn't have taken off until they gave me a complementary first class upgrade.
r93 the child was adopted. Both husband and wife are white.
r96 you sound like a douchebag. You're too old to even remember you were once a child.
Well that just breaks my heart, R97. Your opinion means so much to me!
r98 your reply affirms you are a real douchebag. What fun you must be.
Shit... More fun than you, R99, that's for sure...
I'd have turned to the newest stewardess
Welcome, time traveler from 1950.
The husband is not white.....
unless he's a New York Times white hispanic
R102 both husband and wife are white, the kid is adopted.
Oh sorry R101, I forgot to use the latest gender neutral PC term or whatever... The males I've seen doing that job might as well be called stewardesses. It's all the same, at the end of the day it's just the bitch (male or female) that's being too goddamn slow bringing me my drink. And who also needs to check the attitude and remember who the paying customer is.
Tell you what, those of you who love the precious little babies so much should VOLUNTEER to sit your asses with them. Wouldn't want them to end up sitting next to one of us 'douchebags' who are able to be honest about not wanting to deal with a vomiting, diaper full of shit, screaming little monster.
I saw the husband and he ain't white.
r105 you must have been looking at the wrong man. The husband is white.
Bennett and her husband are white, while Jonah, whom they adopted, is black.
There's a photo of the family together.
If I came down the aisle and saw the rabid, hissing queen @ R104 in the next seat, I would insist on an upgrade to first class.
Psycho at r104, etc., I would VASTLY prefer NEVER to deal with screaming babies on planes; however, I understand that my preference for a child-free flight does not entitle me to slap a toddler or its mother, and I recognize that in this particular case, the problem had a lot more to do with obnoxious DRUNKS on planes than with obnoxious kids on planes.
Here's R104, nice and cozy in his precious economy seat:
