The end of courtship: How texting and social media have changed the dating culture forever.
“The word ‘date’ should almost be stricken from the dictionary,” Ms. Silver said. “Dating culture has evolved to a cycle of text messages, each one requiring the code-breaking skills of a cold war spy to interpret.”
“It’s one step below a date, and one step above a high-five,” she added. Dinner at a romantic new bistro? Forget it. Women in their 20s these days are lucky to get a last-minute text to tag along. Raised in the age of so-called “hookup culture,” millennials — who are reaching an age where they are starting to think about settling down — are subverting the rules of courtship.
Instead of dinner-and-a-movie, which seems as obsolete as a rotary phone, they rendezvous over phone texts, Facebook posts, instant messages and other “non-dates” that are leaving a generation confused about how to land a boyfriend or girlfriend.
“The new date is ‘hanging out,’ ” said Denise Hewett, 24, an associate television producer in Manhattan, who is currently developing a show about this frustrating new romantic landscape. As one male friend recently told her: “I don’t like to take girls out. I like to have them join in on what I’m doing — going to an event, a concert.”
The link I see between the economy and dating is hopelessness. Bosses treat workers like they're disposable with no respect for labor laws or human decency. The only ways out seem to be entrepreneurship/etsy/band or Buddhism/surfing/substance abuse. Perhaps if there were better enforcement of labor laws, people would feel more dignified and secure about their futures, and treat each other better.
Are you lost, r1?
You're reply makes is entirely too deep and not nearly cunty enough to be acceptable.
What in the holy fuck is a "branding coordinator?"
Very heterocentric article.
R3, A "branding coordinator" is someone that matches a product with an image for greater appeal and hopefully a higher volume of sales to a specific market or demographic. Note how Pres Obama was "rebranded" to increase his appeal to Middle America.
Oh I loved Myoshu Umecki in The Courtship of Eddie's Father!!!
Maybe they've learned something from the recent laugh fest over the idiotic Notre Dame football player. But probably not.
I've heard it said that the most indifferent person controls the relationship.
[quote]“I don’t like to take girls out. I like to have them join in on what I’m doing — going to an event, a concert.”
That's hilarious. It's so lazy.
So nothing has changed really? The lazy men are in charge and have to do even less than before because women are still brought up to think they're lucky a man is paying them attention? Or are women going to be just as lazy?
R5 and people like her are frightening.
R5 is knee deep in drinky poos.
And note, R5, that all the rebranding in the world couldn't make a silk purse of the Romney sow's ear. No matter how much you lied, that cow and his heifer could not be rebranded.
R14, I agree that the massive attempt to rebrand Romney was what kept me constantly laughing all last summer. Can't wait for the huge attempted snow job on Rubio and Chris Christie. I can just see it now, Rubio will champion less governmental interference, which is supposedly why he voted against laws to protect women. Christie will be the middle-of-the-road candidate and the "aw shucks" I just look like the majority of y'all in Middle America b-ser.
Gay & straight, everyone fucks on the first date or the first hang out these days.
