Question for Luisiana Data Loungers

Does the entire state close for Fat Tuesday? I just received an automated response from a college help desk stating: [quote]A representative will follow-up with you as soon as possible. Our office will be closed February 12, 2013 to observe the Mardi Gras Holiday.

• Business in south Louisiana generally close on Fat Tuesday and universaties run by the state such as ULM and ULS. It goes without saying that New Orleans shuts down.

• Hell, most of South Mississippi closes as well. That's why the tornado yesterday didn't kill anyone, the USM campus was deserted for the Mardi Gras holiday today and tomorrow.

• In Louisiana, Mardi Gras is much like a federal holiday; banks, schools and government offices are closed, as are most businesses (with the exception of restaurants, bars, etc.). No mail delivery.

• Why would LA have an informal state holiday on Fat Tuesday? Does Chicago close down for St Patty's Day? How about parts of NY on Columbus Day? Actually NV has a formal state holiday on Halloween but the excuse is it's the day NV was admitted to the union.

• It's like that in coastal MS and AL too. I know they used to give schools off for Mardi Gras. There was a tornado a day ago at Southern Miss in Hattiesburg but everyone was safe because it was the Mardi Gras holiday.

Lots of states have state holidays that aren't recognized or even much-known anywhere else. Casimir Pulaski Day (Illinois), Pioneer Day (Utah), King Kamehameha Day (Hawaii) -- there's a whole list.
