- Why OP? Because unlike you, OP, some people have their shit together and can afford such vacations. You on the other hand are scraping by because your personality disorders interfere with earning a substantial living or finding anyone to support you. That's why.
- Cruise queen alert @ r7.
- I did a cruise once. Atlantis, Alaskan passage. It was great to see Alaska from such a unique vantage point. however, I'm not in any hurry to do another.
- Went on a round-the-world cruise once. It was great.
- Oh hold up a minute R7. I'm about to embark on a month long tour around Europe, so I can well afford a cruise, but you wouldn't catch me dead on even the most luxurious ship.
I do not get the appeal at all.
And yes, most of the trip is in Italy, so maybe I'll drop by the excitement at the Vatican.
- [R8} never bothered with a cruise. Been all over this world on my own. I can recognize the envious slacker fag when it see him.
- R7 Cruises are dirt cheap. If you think being able to afford going on some $299 booze fest is the mark one has arrived, well all I can say is it sucks to be you.
- Good news for Mexico.
- R7 that's a rather unhinged response. Seems like a personal vendetta against OP.
- R13 is right Cruises are one of the cheapest vacations you can get, that's why people still go on them.
- Do they have cruises that cater to the truly elite anymore?
All these accidents are a symptom of trying to 'mass produce' something that should be expensive. If done correctly, and safely and with true quality the price would be unobtainable for most people.
Why not have smaller - boats and safer journeys?
-
Do they have cruises that cater to the truly elite anymore?
Lines such as Seabourn cater to people who have the time and money and desire to visit exotic locals.
Why not have smaller - boats and safer journeys?
Economics. You need a real lot of passengers to cover the expense of running a ship. The smaller ship, the more expensive the cabin becomes.

- I went on a cruise once. While it's truly exciting to watch morbidly obese suburbanites stuff their gobs at the troughs and watch them zip around on their fat-person-scooters, I think I'd probably pass on taking another one. And because said fatties can't properly reach around to wipe their own asses, they spread norovirus all over the place.

You can have that experience in Las Vegas for a fraction of the price. Stroll through the slot area marked "Penny Arcade' in any low-rent LV casino and you'll see tomorrow's Gayle Grinds in the making with their equally obese husbands.
- I've gone on two Carnival cruises and loved both of them. The food, activities, casino, shows, it's a blast. I especially like all the activities. A new calendar of them each day: contests, bingo, karaoke etc. Then snorkeling and swimming with dolphins at the ports. So much fun.
- I wouldn't go anymore though. I've given up gambling and the casino would be too tempting.
- OP, I assume you've also started threads citing a single car wreck, asking why people drive anymore; and a single plane crash, asking why people still fly?

- Too many crimes are committed aboard cruise ships and never brought to justice. Besides that, I like to get where I'm going, preferring the destination to the journey.
Finally, I saw Titanic.
me? cruise? never!
- I've been on several and they were fine, but I turned down the opportunity to go on a cruise to Hawaii and back. There were too many "at sea" days, and after a while you feel like you're trapped in a hotel. I prefer cruises that stop at a different port at least every other day.

- From Cruise Critic:
"Our daughter is on that cruise and was able to call us last night when another cruise ship came along side. She said the conditions were not improving with the odors and restroom situation. She disputed the CC reporting of 1/2 public restrooms working. She hasn't found one working as of last night. The sandwich line takes over 2 hours and people in the front are taking more than they need and the back of the line gets what's left. She is only getting bread and salad. They should be rationing, but you would think people would know better than to act like this will be their last meal... She is using a bucket for a toilet. She does not report the ship leaning, but we didn't ask her. People are dragging their mattresses out onto the decks to sleep. The crew is being very helpful, but many cruisers are causing caos. We hope they will make it to Mobile sooner than later. We probably won't hear from her again until they get to Mobile unless another cruise ship comes by... "

So with all the toilets overflowing and shit and urine everywhere and odors everywhere, how do they clean the ship? I wouldn't want to go on the next cruise on that ship. They can't disinfect everything. Even if they hose down the whole ship that would be worse since shit water would be going everywhere even the dining room floors and kitchen.
- How embarrassing if you have to share a room with a boyfriend or girlfriend and now you have to shit in the same bucket and see each other's shit.
- Kills the romance.
- Here's an idea: Shit in the bucket and then throw it overboard? Maybe?
- Not everyone gets buckets. Only the lucky ones do. They don't have 1000 buckets lying around. The rest will just have to shit in their toilets and not flush. So yeah, you see each other's shit. Maybe it makes the relationship stronger.
- Shit on a towel and then fling it overboard.
- You cannot pollute the ocean like that. There are strict littering laws.
- You know people are breaking those laws....
- I love cruises, doing my 6th cruise this summer in fact. What happened to this Carnavale Cruise is sad but these things happen so rarely. Don't judge all crusies by what happened here.
- I know these things "rarely" happen, r53.
Still, to each his own, but I'll take my power outages at an on-land hotel rather then one that floats. That way, you, see, I can leave to go home or go elsewhere.
Cruises never have appealed to me.

- Imagine the STENCH!
- When was this cruise supposed to be over? Will there be people who return to work late as a result of the various delays?
Though ocean travel has no interest to me, primarily because the people I would be traveling with seem to be older and more blue collar and suburban (even if they are not) hence I have no interest in socializing with them (nor they with me, I am sure) - but that being I do feel sorry for them.

- Where does Norwegian rank in the pecking order? Someone I know is always going on about how amazing their Norwegian cruises are. Is it a low level one?
- higher than most, I would think (better food and wine, more expensive).
Carnival really does seem to be the bottom of the barrel.
- I think I would like an Alaskan cruise but other then that, I'm not really interested. I hate stopping in port and having to take the tours. I'm not a morning person.
- Carnival owns Holland America, Seabourn, Princess, Cunard and Costa, among others.

Granted most people can handle alcohol, but still, adding a mood accelerant to people already on edge doesn't seem to be a good idea.
Della
- It's not as bad as some drama queen fraus made it out to be. The ones suffering are in the cheap rooms with no balcony. They're trying to sneak into the better parts of the ship. The first class cabins are doing just fine and having an extended vacation.
- But the first class cabins toilets don't flush either. People are shitting on their beds.
- Nightline just did a story on this. People are calling their loved ones screaming "We're going to die! We're going to die!"
Others texted about how there's sewage running down the walls and floors. Everyone's covered in shit.
One couple got married on the ship and are now spending their honeymoon in each other's shit.
The Carnival owner was seen hamming it up at NBA basketball games. This is angering people since his customers are suffering right now.
Carnival said they will give each passenger $500 to compensate for this.
- What a nightmare R72!
The idea of flying makes me want to die of fright, but I see now that a ship is not a good alternative because these types of debacles seem to happen all too frequently.
- oh the humanity!
(Can't wait to read the Cruise Critic reviews -- with pictures -- of this one!)
-
One couple got married on the ship and are now spending their honeymoon in each other's shit.
They should look on the bright side. The first time one of them has to hold the other's head while they're vomiting, it'll seem like nothing.
- Why didn't they send out another ship to pick the people up? The Carpathia for instance.
- I can only imagine how difficult the logistic is to rescue so many people at once or bit by bit (who goes first, who goes last?). Regular ships (freighters for example) don't have the means to house so many people and have them easy access to sanitary facilities.
Sucks to be those poor tourists and practically get the 'well, you get what you paid for' treatment by the cruise liner.
I wonder if people can sue the cruise company for emotional distress for having to deal with or being exposed to other people's feces (what if the shit of your spouse turned you off so mouch that you want to break up with him or her)?

I haven't seen any details, and their cryptic "offline" really doesn't make much sense.
I suspect there was a fire or explosion that did horrific damage to the electrical system, because if it was just a breakdown in the generator systems they should have been able to bring a tug alongside to provide at least enough power (via cable) to restore some of the more critical systems. If not via cable from the tug, then get some copters out there to set generators on the deck or something.
Of course, if my theory is correct, one would assume that there would be injured crewmen, and certainly the passengers would have talked about smoke, noise, etc., and that doesn't seem to be the case.
It'll be interesting to find out just what the problem is.

- Here's a description from one of her sister ships. I assume this one is similar. You'll note that in theory, there are two independent diesel engine/generator sets in separate compartments. Whatever it was that knocked them both out, well, we're talking more than a blown fuse here.
The diesel-electric power plant on the Elation features six Wärtsilä 12V38 medium-speed diesel engines, with a total power output of 47,520kW (64,600hp). These are placed in two separate engine rooms. Each diesel drives an ABB 11,000kVA AC alternator, supplying electric power to a main electric high-voltage bus bar of 6.6kV 60Hz, three phase, from which the main propulsion motors and other large consumers are supplied. The power for the two 14MW synchronous electric AC motors located in the propeller pods of Azipods are controlled by cycloconverters supplied by ABB.

Never seen Cuomo much but he's AWFUL.
- Cuomo is the worst. I didn't used to like him much on 20/20 but it was luckily only a few minutes a week. I just noticed him in his new position the other day when the Dorner stuff was going down and within an hour I was ready for his shift to be over. I wonder if he will last? He was such a sycophantic dork to those cruise people. I also wonder how many of those "survivors" will be crowding the morning news circuits. CNN has been ridiculous on their coverage of this.
- Why did cable news networks have breaking news coverage last night? It was three days they had no power. I heard people had to shit in bags. Did they steal toilet paper? If not what did they wipe with? They had degraded conditions but they still have their lives.
- They are on now after having docked in Alabama. Some of them are saying it wasn't too bad. There was one fattish, hickish sounding woman who compared it to the Superdome during Katrina..sure thing, sweetie.

Totally agree with this. Cuomo sounded like some kind of novice and CNN is becoming a bigger joke than ever. Gawker posted this clip of one of the passengers setting one of CNN's "reporters" straight about comparing their plight to those who experienced the Hurricane Katrina disaster.
http://gawker.com/5984466/watch-a-cnn-reporter-compare-the-disabled-carnival-cruise-ship-to-hurricane-katrina
- r169 Yes, that's the coverage I saw and one of the passengers compared it to Katrina, not that guy, it was a big woman see r168. Towards the end of the coverage that Savidge idiot was talking to another woman who seemed nice and had just gotten off the ship. He was acting like they had just escaped Nazi occupied territory. He actually asked, "Now how did you walk off the ship? Were there lights for you to see? Did someone help you?" I shit you not. The chick just gave him a weird look and said there were lights. It was on the AC time slot but wasn't AC because this important news had to break in.
- CNN was falling all over themselves trying to make this into a disaster of epic proportions. I didn't know anything about the conditions on the ship until tonight, and while nearly every pax is getting off saying it was okay, we played cards and got to know people, yes we had food...CNN is playing like there's no other news in the world, and like these people were jumping off the Hindenberg. I did see that one pax school the reporter about how no, this was nothing compared to Katrina. Piers already has a show ready for Fri night called "Triumph and Tragedy." FFS!

- Pathetic, sad and embarrassing R170 & R171. Zucker is already ruining things.
- r171 Are you fucking kidding me? Triumph and Tragedy? Oh my. Yes, besides the 'Bama woman all the people seemed pretty mellow and not too upset. I wouldn't have even watched it except I thought it was AC doing a report on the Dorner thing. I hope they don't put this on Dateline tomorrow because I usually like watching that.

- CNN just lives for stories like this. Why, the only time they get a ratings bump is during national, sensational stories like this. Otherwise, any other day they are buried in third place behind Fox and MSNBC where they rightfully belong.
Zucker's fingerprints are all over this. I'm surprised he didn't sail Burnett and Cuomo on a fucking ship to cover the story and interview the guests right next to the Carnival cesspool.
- Our long national nightmare is over!
- r175 ha, ha. r174 I know they do seem desperate for a story but what's weird is that they already had one. HLN is all about AZ and the Arias trial right now but I have been wanting to see the Dorner and LAPD coverage and they were getting into that pretty good on Tuesday and then the momentum was broken by the SOTU, but it seemed like they would get right back to it, especially since AC was handpicked by Dorner to get a copy of his stuff and a lead. And then..nothing on it. They really dropped the ball on that.

- Viewers love new and fresh types of tragedies. War in the Middle East is so far away, stale, and yesterday's news. What gets people going is tragedies that are new and/or happen in the US (which in the viewer's mind is just right around the corner from where he lives).
- Lots of hicks/red state-types. Have they started to blame Obama?
It's private business, folks!
- Where the hell did Carnival advertise to get these poor schmucks? I haven't seen one yet that didn't seem like they were on their first trip out of the trailer park. Love the fact that one of the major reasons they couldn't dock in Mexico after the power failure was because 900 (yes that number is correct) of their passengers didn't have passports.
- Why was the ship listing? What caused that?
-
I keep seeing all this stuff about people texting and calling. Do cell phones work at sea?
Yes, they have some sort of satellite connection, but it requires electricity. People on the Triumph were able to make brief calls once a day when another Carnival ship pulled up next to it to bring supplies, using that other ship's cellular "network."
- ^ I phrased that badly. I meant to say that yes, cell phones work at sea when they're on a cruise ship with a satellite connection.
R182
- I'm kind of surprised Carnival stock hasn't plummeted. According to a Yahoo poll, 50% of respondents are now "scared off" from taking a cruise.
- I wonder what causes an entire cruise ship to lose electricity. I wonder if it was some tiny bolt or screw being loose, or a fan belt broke down somewhere.
- It was a FAHR, R185.
- Darwinian existence aboard cruise ship described
'People were hoarding food; boxes and boxes of cereal, grabbing cake with both hands,' a Triumph passenger says
(As with all other aspects of this ill-fated cruise, the reports of "Darwinism" seem to be a media construct created by asking leading questions, if GMA is any indication)

May Day at 7:40 AM February 15, 2013
I was on this ship and I want to comment on a story you will not hear on Fox or CNN!
Okay, so we had to use those little red bags to go to the bathroom in. After the first 24 hours, all the Asians were complaining that the big fat Americans continued to gorge on huge amounts of red meat (cheese burger bar remained open 24/7) and filled the ship with putrid fumes of bodily waste. The Asians even videotaped one 300 pounder dude who wore the same Hawaii shirt x 7 days and needed 2 bags per bowel movement! The Asians then showed what looked like little rabbit pellets of their waste and compared it to the buffet lizard Americans that filled the arniva wheelborrow in just 3 or 4 cabins! This almost started a riot until the Captain decided to separate the Caucasians from the Asians...If you were Vegan, you were allowed to stay on the Asian side. I am vegan so I switched rooms with with a family from Houston Texas -All averaged 275 including the 3 kids. I just sat in my cabin watching Das Boat (the sub titled version) on my DVD player popping Zanex and eating steamed broccoli and white rice..I also smoked some cannabis I smuggled aboard in Cozumel. By the end of the cruise, I could speak decent German and I lost 12 lbs.

- CNN got big ratings for the ship coverage. I guess it doesn't matter about credibility, Zucker got what he wanted.

- Breaking news, the first lawsuit has been filed! This just broke on HLN. Fuck, what does HLN expect after Cuomo and co. stuck their tongues up the passengers asses about how hard this all must have been the people must have been stewing about it all night because what's right is right! Ridiculous.
- r178, in all fairness a lot of the foreign policy stories are totally co-opted by political interests anyway. They are also complicated and require some history to put in context.
What can any of us really do about these places when our own country is in a recession?
With the media the way it is, the US could be intervening behind the scenes and we'd never know.
- The contract cruise passengers have with the cruise line limits liability of the carrier to specific amounts, which in fact are fairly low. The passenger agrees to arbitration for any unresolvable issues. This is standard in the industry. Good luck suing.

- R189, I saw that headline earlier today and couldn't help but laugh.
- I would love to see a tv movie about this, complete with shitting all over the ship.
- One of the quotes under the article at r189 link was "that's too bad about the bus breaking down, maybe the bus company could give them a free cruise as compensation.."
- This whole story might do as a sequel to "The Out-Of-Towners."

- After all this, and tonight's 20/20 stories on all the horrors of cruise ships, I don't see how any sane person would step aboard any such ship.
- I've never been on a cruise, and I always thought they cost a fair amount of money. That is obviously not the case anymore, as I was watching these yokels be interviewed as they got off the ship in Mobile. They were all obviously lower-class types who looked like they barely had a pot to piss in (ha!) so cruises must not be expensive after all.
- I am not really a cruise type of person but I wouldn't put any stock in a 20/20 report. They do a cruise horror story at least once a year and their old host Chris Cuomo was the dunce who was doing the interviews with the "survivors" yesterday.

- Of course the cunt Cassie something or other from Texas filed a lawsuit 5 minutes barely after she got off the boat. People do not deserve gobs of money for enduring a little poop. Maybe 10,000 dollars at most.
-
They were all obviously lower-class types who looked like they barely had a pot to piss in (ha!) so cruises must not be expensive after all.
Good eye!
Carnival is the Chuckie cheese of the Sea, a horrible cutting corners cruise line.
At the pier, you can always tell who is getting on Carnival.
Unfortunately, I have been dragged on a Carnival ship, and I can tell you the breed that enters is another ilk. Mind you, I have known some decent co-workers and befriended Carnival passengers on a port-o-call, but they are few and far between.
Currently, I'm in a really bad situation, because I have a FREE (4 day) Carnival cruise for two. Yep, they're that disposable and cheap.
I was considering taking it with a friend or niece/nephew and just endure it. Heck, I always hate to waste a free trip, but. . . now, I thinking twice.
- Well, smell you and your poop, R211. Maybe 10,000 dollars? Fine. The company offered $500, which would mean the "cunt" has to file a lawsuit. That's how it works.

- Plus, poop exposes you to disease. Furthermore, let's not forget if someone was a diabetic or needed their (refrigerated) meds, which a lot of people are.
If anything, the Coast Guard needs to be reimbursed for their rescue efforts.
- They didn't need a port-o-call; they needed a port-o-potty.
- What are you talking about, the whole ship was a port-o-potty!!!

- (AP)A cruise ship has returned to South Florida after concluding a Caribbean voyage that saw more than a hundred people develop a gastrointestinal illness on board.
Royal Caribbean International reported Friday that 105 of 1,991 guests and three of 772 crew members experienced a possible short-lived norovirus illness during the 11-night trip.
They have responded well to over-the-counter medication being administered onboard the ship.
The cruise line says in a statement that crew members scrubbed the ship to help prevent the spread of the illness and again when it returned to port.
The source of the illness wasn't immediately reported.
The Centers for Disease Control says the contagious norovirus causes about 21 million illnesses in the U.S. each year and contributes to 800 deaths.
