Ex-White House doctor: Chris Christie yelled at me over the phone over health concerns (VIDEO)
Friday, February 8, 2013
The former White House physician who said she was concerned over New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s (R) health should he become president suggested on Thursday that Christie called and lashed out at her after publicly calling her “a hack.”
“It was essentially the tone of the press conference only louder,” Dr. Connie Mariano told KTVK-TV, referring to Christie’s statement on Wednesday. “It was hard to get anything across.” When the station asked if Christie yelled at her, she nodded affirmatively.
Mariano, who served during both the Clinton and George W. Bush administrations, drew Christie’s ire after telling CNN earlier this week she was worried about his risk of suffering a heart attack or a stroke.
“It’s almost a like a time bomb waiting to happen unless he addresses those issues before running for office,” she said.
That statement led to an angry response from Christie.
“She must be a genius,” he said. “She should probably be the Surgeon General of the United States, I suspect, because she she must be a genius. This is just another hack who wants five minutes on TV, and it’s completely irresponsible — completely irresponsible. My children saw that last night. And she sat there on TV and said, ‘I’m afraid he’s going to die in office.’”
Mariano, a self-described conservative who hosts an internet radio show, also said Christie’s supporters have sent her angry emails since making her statements regarding Christie’s appearance on The Late Show With David Letterman, in which he admitted that his own physician was concerned for him.
She told the station on Thursday she stood by her concern for Christie’s health following the Letterman appearance.
“It was sad. It was sad,” she said of the interview. “He was making fun of himself and I feel sorry for him,” Mariano said in a Thursday interview with 3TV. “He’s a nice man. He’s a very talented, smart man and he has a lot to offer and I would feel awful if something happened to him.”
Watch KNTV’s report on the fallout from Mariano’s comments, and her phone call from Christie, aired Thursday, below.

- Sounds like all the fat in Christie's ass has moved up into his brain. If he thinks he's healthy he's a damn fool. He's a heart attack waiting to happen. The very fact that he's let himself get so damn fat shows that he has no willpower whatsoever. He's out of control and the country can't afford someone of that mentality and emotional immaturity as commander in chief.
- Christie has a charisma and an appeal which I can see because he is more honest and frank than a lot of other dishonest, calculating politicians.
But he needs to control his anger and remain statesmanlike if he wants to run for President and be a world leader. He can't be screaming and yelling at people who call him a fattie.
- She is right of course, and his ability to control his emotions resulting outbursts is not unlike his inability to control his appetite and health. Funny how he does not like a physician scaring his kids- where is his responsibility?
- He seems full of anger, belligerent and resentful. That's why he is so fat.
- But couldn't the same be said for many of us, R4?
- She may be right, she may be wrong. There are fat people without arteriosclerosis and many skinny people with it.
Statistically, she is probably correct, but as an MD she should not have publicly singled him out. It's grossly unprofessional to diagnose a patient she has't treated.
- Perhaps, R6, but she has been a White House doctor to several Presidents - you don't get to do that unless you are of above average ability. She's no ordinary doctor.
- r2 F&F
- White House doctors are notoriously meddlesome and conservative. Dr. Janet Travell tried unsuccessfully to discourage President Kennedy from seeing the brilliant, groundbreaking physician Max Jacobson.
Per Wikipedia:
Jacobson was known for his "miracle tissue regenerator" shots which consisted of amphetamines, vitamins, painkillers, and human placenta.[7]
John F. Kennedy first visited Jacobson in September 1960, shortly before the 1960 presidential election debates.[8] Jacobson was part of the Presidential entourage at the Vienna summit in 1961 where he administered injections to combat severe back pain. Some of the potential side effects included hyperactivity, impaired judgment, nervousness, and wild mood swings. Kennedy, however, was untroubled by FDA reports on the contents of Jacobson’s injections, proclaiming "I don’t care if it’s horse piss. It works."[9]
Jacobson was used for the most severe bouts of back pain.[10] By May 1962, Jacobson had visited the White House to treat the President thirty-four times.[11][12]
- He's nothing more than a bully. Just look at the time the fat ass tried to belittle someone in the audience at a town meeting last year. Anyone who votes for him is stupid.
- I don't see his appeal. He's belligerent, grumpy, and rude. Is it because he's plain-spoken? Is that his appeal? If he's concerned about his kids he should lose weight, get healthy, and work on his attitude. For someone that obese getting so angry all the time could have deadly consequences.
- He's probably going to be re-elected to a 2nd term.
- Exactly right, R6. Very unprofessional on her part and she should know better.
- Too bad Christie came off looking more unprofessional in his response, R13. This will never be forgotten.
- It's not just Christie's girth that puts him at risk. He's also an angry/hostile Type A. This subset is at super-elevated risk for heart disease/attacks even more so than folks with high blood pressure. There are plenty of reasons to be concerned beyond the weight.
- This has really rebounded on him. More and more people are seeing he's a NJ mob type--he can't control his emotions even in public. This may play well in Trenton, but he's going to have to say goodbye to chances of being president. Screaming rage in politics does not play well in Minneapolis or Seattle or Kansas City.
- Think of his image on the world stage. Obama is respected for his class and humanity. Christie would be a global embarrassment.
- [quote]he is more honest and frank than a lot of other dishonest, calculating politicians.
He is blunt, by which I mean "tactless". That doesn't necessarily mean that he's telling the truth when he speaks/shouts.
- Now the fat's in the fire.
- Imagine the horror...someone who is so fat that he has to sit in a chair sideways being told that he is a walking health risk. And for someone who likes to dish out insults he sure has a problem accepting criticism. Nobody walking around with 200 extra pounds of fat is fooling anybody; that shit is not presidential. It's great that his kids heard what Mariano said; they should be his motivation for getting his health on track.
BITCH
- More like 300 pounds, he has to weigh in at well over 450.
- Is he fatter than President Taft?
