Best Device for Viewing Movies on Your Hard Drive on Your TV

I have a desktop computer that is on my wireless network. I want to be able to view videos that are on that computer's hard drive on my TV in another room. I have been able to do so with three different devices so far, but all of them have their drawbacks, specifically: 1. My Blu-Ray player, also on the network. Problem? It has an erratic connection and stutters and stops all the time. Also, I want to use it for Netflix but it doesn't seem to be able to display Netflix closed captions. 2. A WD TV Live box. When it works, it's fine, but it seems to not work about 80% of the time. I don't know if it's defective (I bought it refurbished) or it's just a design flaw, but it has connection problems, too. 3. My laptop computer, and a device that transmits its signal wirelessly to the TV via HDMI ports. This works the best, but the laptop, even with a remote, is a hassle to use compared to the other two. My question: Does anyone else have experience with another device that might handle this better? Google TV? Roku? I'm willing to try anything at this point.
