Best Device for Viewing Movies on Your Hard Drive on Your TV
I have a desktop computer that is on my wireless network. I want to be able to view videos that are on that computer's hard drive on my TV in another room. I have been able to do so with three different devices so far, but all of them have their drawbacks, specifically:
1. My Blu-Ray player, also on the network. Problem? It has an erratic connection and stutters and stops all the time. Also, I want to use it for Netflix but it doesn't seem to be able to display Netflix closed captions.
2. A WD TV Live box. When it works, it's fine, but it seems to not work about 80% of the time. I don't know if it's defective (I bought it refurbished) or it's just a design flaw, but it has connection problems, too.
3. My laptop computer, and a device that transmits its signal wirelessly to the TV via HDMI ports. This works the best, but the laptop, even with a remote, is a hassle to use compared to the other two.
My question: Does anyone else have experience with another device that might handle this better? Google TV? Roku? I'm willing to try anything at this point.
I have AppleTV and watch movies that are on my hard drive on my TV wirelessly with no connection problems at all. However, the movies must be added to your iTunes library and in a file format supported by AppleTV.
But I rip discs — films and sometimes porn — with RipIt, convert them to mp4, and add 'em to iTunes all the time. Not HD, but they look decent. Who cares for the porn and I buy movies I really want in HD from the iTunes store.
Sounds like you need a better wifi connection
I have my laptop hooked up to my tv with an hdmi cord. I have a wireless keyboard with me on the couch, and I use that to to navigate the laptop. Works perfectly.
OP, just turn the knob up to 11.
I use my Xbox to watch netflix. Never had a problem.
Thanks for the advice. I realize I might need a stronger wi-fi signal in that room (although the laptop and my cell phone never have a problem, just the Blu-Ray and the WD TV Live). My house is not that big (1400 sq. ft.) and the router is in my downstairs living room. The room where I'm having the problem is my upstairs master bedroom; it's not that far away. Is there a good way to boost the signal?
I tried using one of those devices that supposedly creates a wired connection through your electric wiring (you plug one end into your router and a wall socket and the other end into a wall socket in another room, then connect it to your device.) It worked OK but disconnects from time to time. And of course you can't use it wirelessly.
