The Voice of the Night- Thanks, Voice!
I fking hate The Chad though
- I feel so bad. I went to high school with someone on that show. Saddly, in a show with some terrible dialog, his lines were the corniest ones. I honestly dont know how he could say them with a straight face.
- The guy from the O.C. needs a bigger part. And more nudity.
- We got two shots at a towel-clad Shawn Hatosy in the most recent season. I'll take him over Ben McKenzie.
Also, after a noticeable lack of the show on DVD, they finally got around to releasing seasons 2-4 in one set, to join the previously released S1. It's available on Amazon for 40 bucks, if you're so inclined.

The Voice of the Night
- Yay!!
- I like The Chad or TChad. He's hot.
-
Yay!!
Ditto!
- R2, Y U no tell us who?
- TChad.
- TChad on Southland.
http://estrelando.com.br/fotos/87/90/fto_ft1_178790.jpg
- I hope TChad hooks up with Michael Cudlitz.
We need more gay sex from the gay cop!
- Do any of the cops besides the Ben McKenzie character know that the Cudlitz character is gay? I can't remember.
I know Lucy Liu knew, but she's gone.
The show progresses so slowly when dealing with the personal lives of the cops, but it sure would be nice to see Cudlitz get in a decent relationship.
- R10, he looks like some 1970's porn star with that mustache
- YES!!
Can anyone direct me to season 1? I can't find it anywhere.
- I will not be watching.
Chris%20Dorner
- Netflix R14....
- I liked the show when it first ran on NBC but when it went to TNT I found myself forgetting about it.
I catch it mostly On Demand and I do think it's a really fine show.
Ben McK is really hot and Cudlitz' role is by far the most interesting character along with Regina King's detective. Not sure if I can stomach C.Thomas' role in every episode but I'll try.
I guess I'd have to say all the characters are intriguing b/c Hatosy is also mesmerizing in his role.As I write this I realize how much I do like Southland!
- Sean Hatosy is smoking and a good actor. He should be doing movies.
I love this show, if only because I get to watch Hatosy and Regina King once a week.
-
We need more gay sex from the gay cop!
The third scene showed him getting up in the morning with his cute boyfriend who wants to rent a place in Palm Springs
As I write this I realize how much I do like Southland
I have to get up early for work and I have been watching repeats at 5 AM. I usually hate repeats of any kind (except Breaking Bad), but Southland is really good even on second and third viewing.
- BATHHOUSE!!!
- There are nude guys 22 minutes into the show. They were bloody, but they were nude (you couldn't see any frontal)
- Last year we had almost no gay scenes. This year we had three in the first episode. I wonder if they are trying to get them all out in the first episode so they can ignore any gay content for the rest of the season.
- I love the gay cop so much. He's my dream man.
- Well, after showing us his naked ass right off, the gay cop's boyfriend left him (cleared out his stuff) and left the cop drinking alone at the end.
Is that it for gay content this season?
DISAPPOINTING. (nice ass, though....)
- Love this show.
When I saw that body thrown off the balcony I couldn't believe what I saw. As always, nothing is predictable.
- Pixelated dicks and tits.
This show's come a long way since the Peacock.
- I kind of like the way that fatherhood has caused Sammy to mellow out and more time on the streets has burned the idealism out of Ben. Their personalities have kind of inverted.
As far as people thinking that's all of Cooper's sexuality we're going to see this season Michael Cudlitz has said we're going to see a few one-night stands and some other interesting choices. He may also be coming out to his new partner.
I'm guessing Lydia's seriously re-thinking her decision not to have an abortion right about now.
The Voice of the Night
- Handsome Ben McKenzie has aged a little since last year. He's a talented actor and plays straight very convincingly.
- Is there any screen pics from the bathhouse scenes on the web?
- btw who played the bf?
- what exactly was happening in that bathhouse scene anyways? it went by so quick with no explination. two gays just fighting over a trick?
- I haven't seen it yet but I do love this show.
- r30,
That was Drew Raush

- I have only seen the "Bats & Hats" episode. Who were the guys in the bedroom scene where one wants to take the relationship beyond them banging each other?
- Hatosy sounds like a dental disease.
- I want Michael Cudlitz in me quite deeply.
- What happened to Caesar??
- The current season has to be set at least a year or so into the future, since Lydia had her baby and he looks to be at least a few months old.
The thing with Caesar seemed to be over by Season 2 when his addiction really started to spiral out of control, so maybe he met the new guy when he was in recovery.
The Voice of the Night
- I, like Ben, am tired of Sammy's baby mama drama.
- R38 - I checked IMDB and Drew Raush's character was named Cesar. They must have recast.
R37
- They did recast Caesar, plus they spelled his name differently.
R37
- Ben Mckenzie is gay? Is that confirmed of just another addition to the FL fantasy list?
- Well, he's never sucked MY dick....
That said, I'm pretty sure he is.
The Voice of the Night
- Typo. FL was supposed to be DL. It was early for me.
R42
- Why "TChad" instead of "Chad"?
- According to Drew Rasch's imdb page, he's on again as Cesar in the next episode.
At least we can maybe hope for more naked butt...

Anderson%20Cooper%2C%20who%20also%20loved%20a%20Cesar
- He imagines himself French, r45.
- I have never understood why anyone found potato-faced Benjamin McKenzie good-looking. And his body is not any better.
- Holy shit!!!! - on the ending of the new episode.
Just when everything seemed like it as working out for Lydia, what is she going to do now?
Those who watched Season 1 of American Horror Story should recognize the chick that played Officer Cuddly Bear's "girlfriend" with the doughnuts and cupcakes. She wants to be a pretty girl.
And I'm glad that CMM was exposed as an asshole.
- Yeah, I recognized "Pretty Girl" right away. I really thought the end was devastating. I like the actress who played the mom. (Rose from Lost, right? Or is it just the voice that sounds so much like Rose?)
I think Lydia is really going to have to get her babby daddy to help with the slack--even though she doesn't want a relationship with him. IIRC, he was a decent guy who seemed more than willing to help raise the baby.
I knew there was something fucked up about Cudlitz's new partner.
- The ending was heartbreaking.
-
I like the actress who played the mom. (Rose from Lost, right? Or is it just the voice that sounds so much like Rose?)
That's an affirmative, r50.
- Has The Chad been on again?
- On a slightly shallow note, and one I feel bad making given how sad the ending was, I have to say, even with her supposed baby weight, Regina King has a slammin' body.
The Voice of the Night
- Wow, it was an incredible episode. I loved the chase scene and girl on girl fight. That headbutt had to hurt--and Regina is fast! I like the chemistry she has with her partner, too.
I can't say enough how much I love this show. I like that I never know what's going to happen next.
The ending really was heartbreaking.
- Just saw the first two episodes. In a word, wow! You never know what's right around the corner in this show.
- Regina King directed episode 38 coming up on March 13.
-
I like the chemistry she has with her partner, too.
Rueben has gotten less annoying, but I still miss Josie. The evolution of their relationship from one of antagonism to one of respect and trust, only to be upended when Josie found out Lydia was sleeping with her son was one of the best parts of that season. I really which they'd kept her and made her Christopher's other grandmother, which would give them a chance to tell some really interesting stories.
The Voice of the Night
- Cudlitz's character on the show is my fantasy husband. Distant, broken alcoholic/pill abuser, barely controlled anger, slightly gone to seed but still hot body, blonde, will most likely constantly disappoint you, in desperate need of psychological repair but will never be fixed... So fucking hot. He could sit on my face for hours.
- I can picture that musky hole with its dirty blond hairs.
- Bofa was looking for you.
The Voice of the Night
- I read the ratings are down even from last season. I hope it gets at least one more season. It's the only show I watch that doesn't make me ashamed.
- I hope Southland survives. It's so well done.
- That very last scene when Lydia took a pic of her with the baby on her phone - did that make anyone else wonder if maybe she actually had been sending pics to the baby daddy? And that meant she had lied to his current woman when they had that parking lot argument earlier in the show?
- R64, I think that last suggested that.
- Love this show.
- I thought she was taking pics of herself with the baby so she could join her coworkers in the baby-showoff activities. She's starting to get over her postpartum ambivalence about motherhood and is bond with the child.
- R64, I do not think that was the case at all. In the previous episode Ruben made a comment about Lydia not having any pictures of her child on her phone. This illustrated that she had not fully accepted the responsibility of being a mother. Her mother had basically assumed that role. This episode she was a little jealous of Ruben sharing baby pictures with another detective. Afterwards she went home and her aunt foisted the kid on Lydia as if to say this is your kid and your responsibility. The picture symbolized her acceptance of her responsibility of being a mother.
- What R68 said.
- Good post, R68.
- Good explanation r68, and that makes solid sense to me. And it almost makes me feel bad for doubting Lydia.
She was so sincere and had me convinced that she was telling the truth about not sending pics to the daddy (I can't even remember his name). I never should have questioned it.
R64
- Officer Cuddlybear showed off that meaty ass of his tonight. Looking really good. It was right at the beginning of the episode as he stepped out of the shower...and (Spoiler ) he wasn't alone in his bathroom.
And that bandit that tossed all the cash to people in the streets, I was pretty much hoping that Officer Sherman would start humping him instead of wrestling with him.
I think I'm in a mood tonight.
- Who is Officer Cuddlybear?
-
Who is Officer Cuddlybear?
It's Officer Cooper, r73. That nickname was started on a previous Southland thread and I think it originated as a play on the actor's last name - Cudlitz.
- He also showed some bush and peen, which of course was pixelated.
Hopefully this season's DVD won't be censored.
- I thought the story of Sherman and the black kid was stupid and forced. Ben seemed embarrassed to deliver that silly dialog about Mustangs. It was great to see Cudlitz's butt and I hope we have more gay scenes with him.
- But the ending was depressing.
- I thought the community center shooting was very spooky and well done.
I thought Sammy beginning to speak about rape before the kids, was not something he would do.
As always, I love this show.
We need to keep in on the air somehow. Maybe save Southland on Facebook?
- Loved the opening with Officer Cuddlybear and his trick.
- Cuddlybear naked ass reruns tomorrow (Saturday,9th) 11:00-Noon ET on TNT.
- Ugh. Ben McKenzie already has a role in a fall TV pilot, and now Shawn Hatosy follows suit. It really doesn't sound like good news for Southland.
I suppose the show could continue without those 2 characters even though they are originals to the program. Maybe both actors could do 2 jobs? But most likely it means they know this is the last season for Southland and they booked other jobs.
Hopefully Cuddlybear gets something more than a 1-night stand by the end of the series.
http://www.deadline.com/2013/03/southlands-shawn-hatosy-to-co-star-in-cbs-pilot-reckless-dexters-james-remar-in-nbcs-hatfields-mccoy/
- It was nice to have some smiles on the show, together with the emotions. I'm looking forward to seeing the Regina King-directed episode tomorrow.
- I loved Ann Southland, I love her in the Whales of August, Big Momma and The Letter To Three Wives.
- LOVE, LOVE,LOVE this show....and yeah, Cudlitz is my fantasy BF too. I find myself wondering how many real life cops, like him, are out there ? Would take him over Mackenzie, or Hatosy, any day - and I'm not normally a bear lover. He's just so real, and defeated, and lonely - his 'oh well' expression was so great, when he realized the cute trick was leaving, and it really was just a one nighter. He wants a BF so bad. I would love if they could at least spin-off his character, and we'd have the 1st tv show with a gay cop. Never been one in the lead roll, right ?
Former%20LAPD%20/%20out%20gay%20cop%2C%20Mitch%20Groban
- Damn, looks like the stars know the show is over, very sad if it's true.
- They film in advance so I'm not sure they know the ratings while they're shooting.
Regina directed tonight's episode.
- Hope your dvrs are set.
- Last night's episode was amazing as always. It was really sad to watch Cooper dealing with issues of aging and loneliness. I really felt for the character and how he would have felt about socializing with the old cop and how that might be him someday - practically begging for human companionship. When the old cop asked Cooper to go out on Saturday it was like I could read what was going on in both of their minds. It was great television. That's Southland for you. Later when he saw his ex wife - that was a great scene. Then we also got the scene with his drugged-up buddy talking to Cooper about his butt - I wasn't able to figure out was going on there.
Anyway, it really feels like they are tying everything up to end the show and make the fans happy with how everybody ends up. I think they are going to end with Cooper in a relationship.
- It is my favorite show. I don't want it to end!
-
Then we also got the scene with his drugged-up buddy talking to Cooper about his butt - I wasn't able to figure out was going on there.
Two reasons, I think: First, it was a way to break the tension, which is how they almost always use Dewey. But more subtly, I think they were implying that Dewey was the guy Cooper pulled out of the burning car when he first hurt his back. When he was in the hospital bed, one leg was sticking out from under the covers and you could see that he was scarred from a bad burn.
The Voice of the Night
- 'Southland' Season 6: Regina King Talks Renewal And Cancellation Chances
Posted: 03/13/2013 4:30 pm EDT
Will there be a "Southland" Season 6?
Will "Southland" get a Season 6?
Fans of the TNT series have been worried about the show's future, especially since stars Ben McKenzie and Shawn Hatosy have both signed on for second-position pilots (i.e. if "Southland" doesn't get renewed for a sixth season, they each have a pilot gig lined up).
The show's leading lady Regina King shed some more light on the possibility of "Southland" Season 6 in an interview with TVLine. “Of course we want it to come back,” King said. “But there are just certain things that [make us think], ‘Are we?’ No one’s told us that we weren’t, but there are enough things that haven’t happened [like promotional support] to question, ‘Are we?’” King admitted, "It could go either way."
McKenzie took to Twitter to pacify fans who were upset about him joining CBS' "The Advocates" pilot and worried about how it would affect the future of "Southland," which is currently in the midst of its fifth season
- Just saw both episodes. So well done. The sadness was palpable in many scenes. Copper better get a boyfriend, quick!
- I think it was more than implied, r90. Dewey actually said something like How much do I owe you - how many times have you saved my life?
- Dewey seems to know cooper is gay - do any of the others? I wonder when he's coming out to his new partner who's always trying to fix him up with a female date.
- If they decide to end the series (which it appears they are) I really hope they end it with Cooper in a relationship and out on the force. The character deserves some peace and we (the fans) deserve some positive closure.
Next week the previews tell us his dad is going to die and there is more angst for him as somebody tries to bring them together again. We already know how much he hates his dad who is in prison.
- I find it sad that there are almost 600 posts talking about The Walking Dead and only 95 discussing this fine series.
- Well why is that surprising R96? WD has almost ten times the audience that Southland does.
- No, I mean I don't understand what the show isn't more popular and people talking about it as a result. The network is doing absolutely no promotion, it's as if the show was already gone and cancelled.
- Anyone recognize the naked guy as Miles from Murphy Brown? Also, the woman who had him trapped on the balcony was the receptionist on Twin Peaks (and played the office nerd in Don't Tell Mom the Baby Sitter's Dead?)
- Cooper sure looked good in that tight, white t-shirt.
- Nice nipple outlines in that t-shirt.
-
Anyone recognize the naked guy as Miles from Murphy Brown?
r99, the naked guy was Charlie Schlatter who I mostly remember as being the cute guy that starred in 18 Again with George Burns.
More recently he played the gay best friend in that movie that would pop up on LOGO once in a while - Out at the Wedding.
- R96, if it makes you feel better 95% of the 600+ posts on the Walking Dead threads are complaints about how much the writing sucks.
I think Southland is a tough show to analyze and it's tough for viewers to get into it because it's nor your typical procedural cop show with a murder that our detectives have to find. The fact that it's an ensemble and there is no real lead is probably another factor against it in terms of viewers. I like it a lot, but I'm also at a loss about where to start the discussion.
- Another potent episode. No sugar-coating on this show!
- What a savagely evil thing for Cooper's dad to do. Not only the original crime, but what he does to his son who's come to see him in his final hours on earth.
And Gerald McRaney for the Emmy: Best Actor in a Guest Role. What an incredible last scene between he and Cooper.
- I'm not a fan of McRaney's but that was a great scene. And I'm not surprised about Cooper's father. That whole deathbed redemption crap almost never happens, but people love to believe that shit. From my experience, impending death strips away all pretense--that's about it.
- Southland won a Peabody award yesterday! Nice to see it recognized for its excellence.
http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2013/03/southland-doctor-who-and-girls-earn-peabody-awards.html
- OK, I haven't had a chance to watch the newest episode yet, so I'm posting this without reading any of the new comments.
That means I might be repeating news that already is posted. Apologies in advance if that's the case.
The disappointing news of the day is that Regina King also has secured a role in a new fall program. Everybody except for Cuddlybear is getting news jobs, which is good for them, but obviously means the actors are telling us what the network isn't - the show is history.
http://tvline.com/2013/03/27/divorce-a-love-story-pilot-abc-regina-king-cast-southland/
- Maybe Cuddlybear could be given his own show as a former cop in LA who's now an out gay man making it in the civilian world.
Not quite the re-boot that The Closer got with Major Crimes, but it does give us more opportunities to see Cuddlybear in various states of undress.
- "i used to pray that you would kill yourself because I'd rather have you dead than live with a gay son."
OMG.
What do you think Cooper whispered in his ear? I like to think it was "Rot in hell."
- R110 - I thought coop's father used the term "faggot" in his final line.
It was far more devastating than "gay son".
Do I have it wrong?
- No, you are right. Even worse than I remembered.
- The other actors made it clear that if Southland was renewed they would go back to the show and not leave for a new series.
Ben McKenzie stated so.
Yes, have to say didn't think Gerald McCraney had it in him to give such a powerful emotional performance. Bravo!
- Strange story: During the filming of Young Toscanini, there were rumors that C. Thomas Howell had an affair with Elizabeth Taylor.
At the time, I figured he was gay, like her previous "boyfriend" Tony Geary. If anything, I expected that he'd put out for the director, the predatory Zeffirelli.
But he's apparently straight, so now I wonder.
- Sometimes it's the little things Southland does that really impresses me.
There was the conversation 3-4 episodes back about Cooper's apparent lack of social life (the sort of joke that he's busy with his cactus garden). In last week's episode his partner offered to set him up on a date with friends of his wife. Then in last night's episode we had the conversation about Dancing with the Stars. The other cop was going on about how sexy the women were with their revealing outfits and didn't Cooper think so, too, and all the time he's looking at Cooper. Was it just me or was that whole thing about DWTS the other cop's way of trying to determine if Cooper is gay? Cooper deflected by saying "how gay" Dancing With the Stars was and it worked (watch the other's cop expression when Cooper says that).
For me, those little scenes add up and say so much about how awkward it can be when your co-workers don't know you're gay and the underlying homophobia.
- How many episodes are left?
- 43 episodes all together, three left to air.
- I will miss this show so much. It's future doesn't sound good. Gee, maybe I can catch up on Rules of Engagement...riveting TV.
- That's likely on the way out, R118. So there is [italic]some[/italic] justice.
- Finally saw the new episode - another great one.
Have to echo what r105 & r106 said about Gerald McRaney. I had no idea he had that kind of performance in him.
I'm assuming that character is like a substitute father figure for Cuddlybear. So when he finally let that emotion out, it might mean he's open to letting Cooper help him get his life back on track.
- The scenes with Cooper and his dad and Cooper with Major Dad were some of the best work this show has done.
But the biggest surprise to me was that it looked like, despite my previous thinking that he was too oblivious to everything, that Dewey knows that Cooper actually is gay.
And if the next three are the last three we ever get, I can safely say that I know I will enjoy them as much as I've enjoyed the previous 40.
The Voice of the Night
- We cannot let be cancelled!
- Maybe we can all spend peanuts to the producers, R122.
Sadly it sounds as if the cast has moved on. Very sad.
- IMO, that tape really didn't show Sammy beating up his wife, so I don't understand why he feels so much guilt.
- More to the point, why did Ben arrange for it to be stolen and have it blamed on that gang?
- Holy shit! Ben must've been shitting himself. Ben sure has become an arrogant hot dog.
When Cooper was arresting the thug at the cemetery, did he have a moment where he wanted to let the guy go because he said he was tired of it all, or did it made him think about his life?
- I've held a sort of grudge against Jamie McShane b/c I hated his Sons of Anarchy character, but holy shit did he hit me in the gut tonight. Dude was just heartbreaking. He and Regina King hit it out of the ballpark in their last scene together.
And I officially want to kick Sherman/Sammy in their respective arrogant/idiot nuts.
- First, Sammy told the investigators that he just pushed his ex-wife away when she came at him. While he didn't beat her up as she described, his actions were certainly more than what he told them and the tape would have shown that. Second, he told them that he dropped the camera on the street. So that's two lies and both lies were backed by Ben.
The only evidence of the two lies is the tape, which Sammy was reluctant to destroy. Ben arranged to have it stolen to protect himself.
So I guess Cooper and his ex-wife are going to have a baby.
- Oh man, these episodes are so stressful to watch.
Sammy's so close to the edge.. what's going to go down with him and by extension/because of MacKenzie's character?
Previews for next week provides more stress... Coop and his partner are "missing". no, no, no - i want Coop to close out the series in a good place; not dead or crippled or riddled with guilt because of something that happens to the partner.
Tom Everett Scott? Wow, it's been seasons! I can't recall why he's no longer a cop/partner to Lydia. Can someone post a reminder please
Big%20Cuddlybear%20fan
- r129: I believe Tom Everett Scott went on desk duty after being shot by his neighbor way back when the show was on NBC. Then he stole the picture of a crime scene involving a celebrity from Lydia's phone and sold it to a tabloid. I don't think he's been seen since then.
I am going to miss this show if this is truly the last season.
- Do we have only two more episodes left? I really hope they tie up Coop's story with a happy ending.
- Only Southland could take a random celebrity cameo (Shaq apparently approached them, not the other way around), and pull it off with so much style.
I'm sort of hoping that by some miracle, we see Cooper back with Cesar by the end of the season/series, as one of things that pushed Cesar to leave was his desire to have children.
The Voice of the Night
- Southland shocks me every episode.
- Just watched Big Bang Theory and was happy to see Regina King hasn't lost her comic timing in her recurring role as Mrs. Harris.
- Well, thank god for TNT On Demand!!
Another great episode.
Why would Coopers partner lie about his life?
So the brother of Bens girlfriend went and caused all that damage to the house?
What a dumfuck.
- R135... remember, Ben's character instigated the break-in at Sammy's house. Ben wants the tape of Sammy's fight with Tammy destroyed. The tape is evidence that Sammy and Ben lied to IA when Tammy pressed charges.
The lying is what's tearing Sammy up inside.
I don't think it's an overstatement to type, "This will not end well."
Ben's character arc is fascinating and disturbing at the same time.
a%20Cuddlybear%20fan
- Did Shaq play Strokeface? I didn't even notice. I can see Shaq's face in my mind, but he must have really aged, because I don't really recall seeing him on the show.
-
Did Shaq play Strokeface?
No, he was the detective that Cooper talked to at the funeral, the one who'd been his friend at the academy.
The Voice of the Night
- OK, now I see it. Thanks, VotN
R137
- Shaq was actually quite good. The car scene was funny.
- Yeah, I thought he was quite good in that role, which is probably why I didn't recognize him. He didn't have that stilted voice and bad timing you generally see from cameo appearances by non-actors (and despite his foray into film, I still consider Shaq a non-actor).
His timing was really great on the "tig old Bitties" line. It rang true.
R137
- How could people have not noticed or figured out that was Shaq?
It looked like him and sounded like him.
Sheesh%21
- Vote are you talking about Anderson Cooper or John Cooper?
- Just saw the latest - wow!
How could Ben's girlfriend's brother have spray painted those intricate gang logos all over the place?
And is Ben seeing two girls? The Latina and the rich teacher?
Cooper needs a kid, and a lover.
This show keeps me on the edge if my seat.
-
Tom Everett Scott? Wow, it's been seasons!
The synopsis for each episode on TiVo still lists him as one of the stars, year after year.
- TiVo is f'ed up. TE Scott left the series at the end of the second season, along with Kevin Alejandro. The only way TNT would keep it on the air was to trim the budget, and they were two of the bigger names whose salaries could be cut.
Chris%20Chulack
- Good points r145.
My cable guide (not Tivo) still lists the hot dude that played Nate (Kevin Alejandro) as the first star - alphabetically, of course.
- Ben thought he was going to just tell off and walk out on his rich teacher girlfriend at that restaurant, but she's apparently scarier than he is. Shaq was great. That face to face fight between Sammy and Strokeface was wild.
When Cooper was arresting the thug at the cemetery, did he have a moment where he wanted to let the guy go because he said he was tired of it all, or did it made him think about his life?
I was thinking both.
I always watch my tape of Law & Order SVU after Southland and it's quite a comedown, I still like the show but Southland is so much more gritty, real, intense and disturbing.
- I thought that scene at the cemetary made John think about having kids of his own. And seeing his partner lie about seeing his own kids opened his eyes as well.
- Please let Cooper have a happy end to his story. I also think when Lydia met up with her old partner it was the first time we have seen her looked happy and unguarded in at least two seasons.
- I smiled when John said to his ex-wife "We're compatible in so many ways, except romantically, of course" or something like that. Glad he's not turning straight, even temporarily.
- I agree R151. I was frustrated thinking they were going that way with the character when he was affection towards her while he was in the hospital a couple of episodes ago.
- Lydia's partner knows her SO well and she knows it.
- Well, shit!!
Fucking hell.
- Excellent episode tonight. Next week is the season finale. I'd like for it not to be the series' finale.
- How can the Television Academy not recognize Michael Cudlitz for this season's work?

- Looks like new week is it and goodbye forever to Southland. I hope they don't fuck the fans over, but I don't hold out much hope.
- Mama Fucking Mia - The episode tonight ( 4 / 10 / 13) was unbelievable. The tension, the surprise, Cudlitz in his Jockeys & handcuffed to his partner, the gay bar bit that turned weird, the unexpected , brutal killing, the thug impaling himself on the construction poles, the methed out psychos - one of the. best shows on TV, and can't get ratings. TNT better renew this , or I'm gonna go postal. Excellent show always, but tonight , topped itself. Emmys all around fellas . Great work.
- I don't see a happy ending for Cooper, at least not in one more episode.
I was shocked yet not shocked at what happened in the meth house.
Wow! At least the Red Lobster commercials brightened things up.
- If the show gets renewed, I see a Vic Mackey/Shane Vendrell redux in Sammy and Ben's future. They both have fucked up so badly, it's almost hard to believe.
Damn, Cooper just cannot catch a break, can he?
R156
- >>Vic Mackey/Shane Vendrell
Remind me, who are they?

- Holy crap! That was a nail biter of an episode last night. I really began to think Cooper was not going to make it. When they made him drag the body of his partner to the hole, I began to go, "No, no, no. Please let Coop survive!"
- Wow what a fantastic episode, great writing and sublime acting. I cannot understand why this show doesn't get better ratings and more critical acclaim.
I was absolutely riveted watching the whole meth horror go down. I actually got a little weak watching it as if I were going to die, and I'm no drama queen.
I'm so impressed with the actors.
The writer was Zack Whedon who has written for Rubicon and Deadwood and is related to Joss Whedon (I just looked this up)
I hope it's renewed...
- I was on the edge of my seat watching last night's episode. It was actually a little stressful to watch. I'm just glad Cooper survived.
- Wow, so intense.
I am guessing Cooper survives only to depart the LAPD.. I think he's done with the BS now. He is going to a daddy AND the father he never had.
- Did anyone else get the sense that Lucero's "faggot" comment came from self-loathing? It just seemed to come completely out of nowhere...as if his and John's horseplay was awakening in him something he didn't like.
- R167. I thought so too.
- My partner and I definitely thought Lucero might be gay.
- Thought that as well about Lucero.
- Agree with R160-R170. It's sad how this turned out, because after the anger and awkwardness, I saw glimmers of a thaw just before Lucero went around the corner of that fucking truck.
- Can any of you DL meth addicts (former would be fine too) vouch for whether that was a believable portrayal of a couple of meth heads?
The whole time I kept asking myself, "Why did they take Coop and his partner with them in the first place?"
And once they were at the desert house I also wondered why the junkies seemed to dished out the harshest violence to Lucero. Coop came away with very little blood on his white Under Armor gear.
But he did take a solid shovel blow directly to his spine, so I'll bet he has a recurrence of the back problem which will lead to what an earlier poster indicated - his retirement from the force.
- R172, I think the methboys singled out Lucero because he would not shut the fuck up the entire time before being dragged into the bathroom. I was shouting at my TV, telling Lucero to zip it.
Methheads usually are wound super-tightly, and these guys doubtless hadn't slept for days. You just don't yammer on to people like that, and you don't bargain hysterically. Cooper was trying to shut him up, calm him down, but it didn't work.
- What a fucking incredibly intense episode. I think it's my favorite out of the entire series. Very intense.
I didn't expect them to kill off Lucero either. Given his "faggot" comment to Coop I thought maybe they'd keep him alive and have the two explore that a bit. However, now that Lucero knew Coop was gay maybe they couldn't keep him alive. I don't get the impression Coop is out to the rest of the force. Would Lucero have outted him?
- The meth house was the same location used in the first season of "Breaking Bad."
- Loved this weeks episode.
Is this the last season? That would suck since it's one of the best shows on TV.
-
he would not shut the fuck up the entire time before being dragged into the bathroom.
Well, they WERE burning him with a blowtorch so he was in pain.
- I had to fast forward through most of the meth house scenes. I love the character of Cooper so much (as I do several of Southland's characters) and this has been such a bleak season all around for the crew that I just couldn't see any more despair heaped on him especially delivered at the end of a shovel or a fist. I'm am glad he survived but at what cost? It does seem that they are tying up for the finale of the series and the only one who looks like she may get out with some semblance of contentment (if that's even possible at this point)is Lydia and that may be through her old partner. I mentioned on another post that Lydia seems the most relaxed and happy in years with the re-introduction of her ex partner. He brought up his new job and how well it was going and seemed to hint that she could go that route too. Maybe I'm just hoping for someone to get some happiness. I just can't get the image of Coop on the ground at the end of the ep...Cudlitz kills me.
-
This week Ben told his partner he was gay when they went for a beer in a gay bar. Reruns tomorrow (Saturday, 13th) at NoonET on TNT.
- My dad went to high school with Michael Cudlitz.
- Southland is probably the best cop show I've seen in decades. Michael Cudlitz is doing an exceptional job this year and I hope he at least gets nominated for an Emmy. EVERYBODY on that series is great. I find myself drawn into the lives of every character. I also want Lydia to be happy. Sammy needs to grow up, and Ben...well, I think what he did to Sammy is going to come out. That was pretty low. But Cooper is the one that I really care about - and Cudlitz brings the character to life.
I want this series to be renewed.
- It needs better publicity.
I would have never heard of it had it not been for the DL.
- What an amazing, devastating episode. The ensemble acting of Cudlitz, his partner and the 2 meth heads was so intense, I completely forgot I was watching a fictional tv show. Agree for Emmys all around.
- Relentlessly good.
- Why did they take Lucero in the bathroom? I thought they were searching for an electric tracking device but they didn't search Cooper. And his underwear was intact.
- {quote]I think what he did to Sammy is going to come out.
Guess you didn't watch the preview of next week.
-
This week Ben told his partner he was gay when they went for a beer in a gay bar.
Coop told his partner he was gay.
Ben is the one who's gay in real life.
- R177, he was yakking long before the blowtorch. From the time they were first cuffed in the living room, Lucero was talking, bargaining, begging. Cooper kept giving him looks that said "please be quiet ; you're pissing them off."
- Thanks, R175--when they pulled onto that dirt road, I said, "That's Rico, Tio, and The Cousins' place!" Took me out of the moment at first, but that didn't last long.
- *Tuco*, not Rico, fricking Autocorrect!
- One meth pad is as good as the next.
- Was I wrong ? I thought there was some "Deliverance" shit going on , when they took Lucero in the bathroom ? Is that possible, or am I reading too much into it, and my own fantasies ???
Ned%20Beatty%20Jr.
-
What an amazing, devastating episode. The ensemble acting of Cudlitz, his partner and the 2 meth heads was so intense, I completely forgot I was watching a fictional tv show.
I felt the same way. Right after Southland the Boston's Finest police reality type show came on and for a minute (I've never watched it before) I still thought I was watching Southland and was wondering who these characters were. They were actually real police officers
and Ben...well, I think what he did to Sammy is going to come out.
if the previews for next week are anything to go by, it looks like that happens
-
Why did they take Lucero in the bathroom? I thought they were searching for an electric tracking device but they didn't search Cooper. And his underwear was intact
I think they water boarded him or dunked him underwater a bunch of times because his hair and his face looked all wet
- Why did the producers kill off Lucero? Was it a contract thing with the actor?
- Because, sadly, the show has not been renewed. Yet.
- Damn it, Lucero, I was just starting to like you.
The Voice of the Night
- Anthony Ruivivar was contracted only for the fifth season much as Lucy Liu was contracted only for the fourth season, so it seems the plan was always that Lucero would have a story arc through the season but he would be gone one way or another by the end. I think this allows them to keep the core ensemble, but add new characters as a way to change up the dynamics and introduce new story lines.
- And yet they keep Ruben who, while he is improved this season, is not nearly dynamic enough to keep up with Regina King.
The Voice of the Night
- I love Southland, but am so tired of Sammy and his whining. Coop is fast becoming my favorite Southland character.
- So intense I had to take breaks and then go back and watch. How could they not renew this incredible show, it puts all other cop shows to shame.
- I wish while they were bound and in the back of the meth heads' truck, they would've tried to kick at the canopy or open it or something and alerted other motorists.
- Had a feeling Cooper's partner was going to die.
Anyone else?
- I just want Coop to live.
-
I really enjoy Ruben's low-key, steady counterbalance to Lydia's intensity. They have good chemistry, and I love how he's perfectly OK with Lydia being the shining star of the team. He's not lazy, as some viewers have said; he's just not as ambitious as Lydia. He wants to be a good detective and a good family man.
Me too. I love how much he gets her and sometimes knows her better than she knows herself.
- Yes, R206! I loved Lydia's face when Ruben tossed her the "I ain't goin' anywhere" line. The tiniest flicker of a smile as she got into her car.
*sigh* I love Lydia. I love Cooper. I love this show.
If it's renewed, they should find a way to bring Tang back for a short arc; given the success of Elementary, Lucy would bring new eyes to the show.
Because I also loved Tang.
Hell%2C%20I%20even%20love%20Dewey.%20
- I disagree with your assessment of Dorian Missick's character, R199.
It's a nice little evolution from the brash, egotistical, assy Ruben we knew before they were partnered up. He seems more confident in his ability as detective, and thus more comfortable letting his partner take the lead--but he can flash when needed.
And I love the soft Brooklyn in his voice and carriage. Reminds me of my NY and Philly cousins on the force.
- Dorian Missick was on the short-lived, ABC drama series [italic]Six Degrees[/italic]. It aired during the 2006 to 2007 season.
His fellow cast mates were Jay Hernandez, Bridget Moynahan, Erika Christensen, Campbell Scott, and Hope Davis.
It was a rather curious story which intertwined the lives of the six individuals. It was the first time I recalled Missick. He was very good. And with that cast, it may have been impossible not to be good on that show. I was sorry it wasn't given more time.
- I guess I'm just in the minority regarding Ruben. I much preferred the complex relationship she had with Jenny Cago's Josie. Ruben has grown on me this season, but the show is kind of a sausage fest now, and it would be nice to have another woman in the mixt.
It figures that Luchero would die as soon as Cooper came out to him, since that's the first time he's told one of his partners unambiguously about himself. He only told Ben in a roundabout way, and while Jessica seemed to know it without being told, the only direct evidence she got was overhearing telling the suicidal gay kid.
I realize wish they could have found a way to bring Jessica back for an episode or two.
The Voice of the Night
- VON @ R209,
I agree with you that Jenny Cago's character was working well with the lead played by Regina King.
I just had in my head that it was a story arc that wasn't going to last more than one season (2010-2011) and that Lydia would have a turnover of partners.
-
I loved Lydia's face when Ruben tossed her the "I ain't goin' anywhere" line. The tiniest flicker of a smile as she got into her car.
R207, that was one of my favorite moments between them and why I love their relationship.
R206
- NBC was idiotic to drop this.
- Southland only got this good after it was picked up by TNT. Cable network constraints forced them to tighten up the show and get very focused.
- I think C.Thomas Howell's character knows Coop is gay. He's joked about it.
- He knows, R214. And it's one of the reasons I really like Dewey. Cooper's orientation just feels like something he's known about for a long time, he follows Cooper's lead in keeping it low-key, but not in a "hiding" or 'phobic way. Dewey's an asshole; John is gay. Simple as that.
He can twit Cooper about being gay in a way that feels organic, as a) only a man totally secure in his own sexuality/masculinity can, and b) someone who, through his own addiction and alienation issues, has learned what true acceptance is.
Of course Dewey would say everything I just wrote is some lame "faggot shit." Cuz he's just an elemental kind of dude.
Can't wait to see his reaction to his friend's trauma.
On another note: Which would you prefer to see hot Daddy Cooper cooing over next season: a son or a daughter?
- Yes, Dewey was really upset about Coop's kidnapping. I can't wait to see the show tomorrow night.
Long%20Live%20Coop%21
- Wow, tomorrow it's probably all over. I can't believe it, I am heartbroken. I will miss the show and the characters.
- Tomorrow is the last episode?
- It's the last episode of the season for sure, r218. They only do 10 shows each year.
The definitive word hasn't been given on whether it's the last episode ever though. Most signs seem to point to the show not being renewed for another season, but we can't know for certain yet.
- Well that's disappointing. It's one of the very few dramas I watch.
- Dewey's just a little 'phobic, but there seems to be no mistaking the fact that he cares greatly for and respects Coop. Dewey's an interesting, complex character and I always enjoy his screen time, although he often makes me cringe.
- Head's up: the episode runs an extra two minutes so make sure your DVR's are set.
- Thanks for the heads up, r222. It would be disappointing to miss the final couple of minutes.
- What is the head's up?
- HOLY SHIT!!!!!
- Oh, my God. I feel sick.
- OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- GODDAMMIT
- Well. that's it, it's over. Not a good ending. Adios, Coop....
- I guess coop won't be back.
wow
- It looks like the producers aren't expecting another season. Very sad.
- It wasn't a good way of ending the series, it was mean to the fans.
- Did anyone else get the sense they shot Cooper differently in the finale?
In every other episode he seems to fill the screen, in a confident, "I'm in charge here" kind of way. Last night, even in uniform, somehow he looked ... smaller and thinner, especially in that last scene with his Sergeant.
- As always - the fucked-up gay guy gets killed and the straights go on to happy, fulfilling lives. Typical BS.
- Just watched a recording of the finale and my reaction was the same: OMG!!!! I figured that Coop would shoot one of the guys he was fighting with in a rage and get in trouble, not that the cops would shoot HIM! Sure looked like a series finale and not a season finale! Damn!
AnonEMoose
- If this is it, I'm okay with that.
Not because I thought the episode was terrible, but because since the beginning, the show has always been about how unpredictable the cops' lives are. And if this is how it goes out, it's at least consistent with that.
Meanwhile, I wish there was a way fans could mount an Emmy campaign. Regina King and Michael Cudlitz really, REALLY deserve nominations.
Also, I don't know if I'm willing to give up all hope of more episodes. TNT sends out surveys after some episodes, and the one about the season finale was pretty detailed, more detailed than I would expect for a show they weren't at least considering renewing.
I of course entered my plea to have then consider airing any potential new episodes over the summer and paired with Major Crimes.

- He lost it and beat that guy to a pulp in front of other cops. He was going to lose his job at best and perhaps go to prison. So he committed suicide by cop.
- Thanks VoN
R237
- I don't think it was mean to fans, I think it was true to itself. Nothing worse in tv than finales that betray what the whole show was about.
The gay guy always got the worst of it for Southland's entire run, why be shocked now? But he wasn't singled out.
Sammy and Ben got it bad.
Lydia's had it bad for years.
I think the finale was fitting and VERY Southland. Some cops are dirty, some die, some have a bit of hope
- Fuck! My TiVo chopped off the last two minutes. What happened?
- Entertainment Weekly has a short piece on how the stars feel about the season finale - and the possibility of it being the series finale.
One question they agree on, it wouldn't be right if the series continued without Coop.
http://insidetv.ew.com/2013/04/18/southland-finale-post-mortem-stars-talk-series-uncertain-future-john-cooper/
- Heartbroken at the finale. I just answered the survey. I hope Southland comes back next season.
Long%20live%20Coop%21
- Glad Coop didn't die.
- R242: read upthread
- So even the actor thinks that Cooper is still alive.
- I hope it's renewed, but I think the show's prospects are bleak. It's probably already been decided. The network won't say anything so the fans don't get pissed off at them.
- I dvr'd it but I'm afraid to watch.
Hold me, David.
- If Coop is dead, they've lost a viewer.
-
Fuck! My TiVo chopped off the last two minutes. What happened?
They are airing it again tomorrow (Saturday) at 12pm and 11:30 pm
- Omg! I'm heartbroken for everybody.
Cooper better be okay.
Why was he staying with his ex-wife? He has a beautiful home of his own.
I love how Lydia's partner stole the spotlight from that douche-bag detective.
I hope the show gets renewed.
- I forgot to mention that whoever mentioned that Cooper was made to look smaller was right.
Maybe Cudlitz lost weight?
He was standing against large backdrops which made him appear even smaller.
Against that wall of windows and against that big American flag, up on the roof of the police building with the tall buildings in background.
It seems that he made himself smaller, inconspicuous, kind of blending into the background. Maybe part of the trauma he suffered.
-
Why was he staying with his ex-wife?
I think he was there because he was recovering after the kidnapping; she is a nurse as well as his friend. Besides, if I remember right he said he was returning home the next day.
- According to TMZ, the LA police chief who had a cameo on the show is lobbying to keep Southland on the air.
- I was thinking I might even TNT an email about it, or even write a letter, which is something that I almost never do.
The Voice of the Night
- I liked the Show on Facebook and was asked to complete a detailed survey about the show. They asked how I felt about characters, relationships, events, etc. They must be thinking of renewing. I told them Cooper must live.
- I tried to like it on FB r257 but the only page I can find only has 48 people liking it??
- Try this one: 500,000 likes
https://www.facebook.com/southland
- I did the survey - thanks for telling us about it.
- This show desperately needs to be on HBO or Showtime.
- I actually think it's a great fit for TNT. The Closer was the second best cop show on TV, and Major Crimes is no slouch either.
The Voice of the Night
- R262, true enough, but on HBO and Showtime, they wouldn't have to keep pulling their punches, and pixelating their scenes.
- Honestly, there's something about the bleeping and the pixelation that just works in the context of the show. While I don't think the show would be any worse for the lack of it, I think it would be different.
The Voice of the Night
- C. Thomas Howell's character is so loathsome. I hate him so much. I keep hoping he'll get his come-uppance.
- This is good, right?
Wednesday night's fifth season finale of the acclaimed cop drama Southland also produced its best Live + 3 deliveries of the season. The episode scored 2.6 million viewers (+16% over the prior week), 1.4 million adults 25-54 (+38%) and 1.2 million adults 18-49 (+22%).
- There's a petition demanding renewal for season 6 of the show... it's not doing so well, but if you love the show as I do, it couldn't hurt to sign it...
http://www.change.org/petitions/turner-network-television-tnt-renewal-of-southland-season-6
- You know, for the longest time and I mean for most of his life, I have tried to find some appeal in Howell. He's good looking and was very cute when younger, nice body, great hair .. but zero sex appeal for me. Which is strange since all it usually takes is XY.
Was it the teeth? He didn't fix them until he was, like, forty or so. Too late now, of course.
- So I finally watched the final two episodes off the DVR... holy fuck. Those last two minutes, I actually shouted "FUCK!!!" at the screen. I almost cried.
Few shows have ever affected me like this.
Goddammit.
I want a new season, dammit, but everyone is in such a fucked-up place right now (except maybe Lydia)... it'll be so hard to come back from this.
If they don't rain Emmys down on this show, there is no justice.
- Southland is officially cancelled.
I'm aware that there is a separate thread started for the announcement (actually more than 1 was started...'search doesn't work' MY ASS!), but I'm adding the news here in case there are fans that keep up with this thread and miss the new ones.
So it's left to our own imagination whether Officer Cuddlybear lives or dies.
Maybe fans could generate a Kickstarter campaign for a movie.
http://insidetv.ew.com/2013/05/10/southland-cancelled/
- The 4 stars all gave EW some comments about how proud they are of the show and the way that TNT gave them a chance to continue without asking them to change a thing that might have increased ratings.
http://insidetv.ew.com/2013/05/11/southland-michael-cudlitz-ben-mckenzie-shawn-hatosy-regina-king-legacy/
- Very sad that this is canceled. One of the best shows on TV.
Sigh.
- I wonder what Ben MacKenzie will do now... I think he's done a TV movie with Mandy Moore - has he hit bottom with that?
- He and Shawn Hatosy had both signed on for pilots. Did either of them get picked up?
The Voice of the Night
- I read that neither of them was picked up...
- That's even more sad. Both of those actors deserve another show. Stat.
- I said before the hammer officially fell that they needed to find a way to bring Regina King onto Major Crimes as Lydia.
It makes me kind of sad. I've seen previews of some of their programming for 2014, and they seem to be moving away from their brand of smart cop shows and into making dumb action shows.
It's probably a good thing that I'm not going to have time to watch TV anymore in a few months. At least this way, I know I'm not missing anything good.
The Voice of the Night
- I'm way behind in watching the show. I just watched the Gerald McCrany episode. Holy shit. Holy shit. Cuddlybear better get a nomination for lead. And GM better win for guest spot. I'm so depressed this show is over. Alas.
- Send Cutlitz and King over to SVU.
- IIRC, Southland got the axe at NBC when they cleared the 10pm time slots for Jay Leno's weeknight show at ten. Southland was too gritty to be shown earlier. Idiots.
