- Please join the quacking on this thread:
http://www.datalounge.com/cgi-bin/iowa/ajax.html%3Ft%3D12385740%23page:showThread%2C12385740
- Since the first thread filled up, how about using this thread to continue the conversation?
I did a search and didn't find another one opened today (I know one of the posters requested that OP maintain the 'quacking' comment when naming a new thread) and of the half dozen that are a few weeks older, this one seems like it has the broadest title.
- The quacking Pt 2 started a few hours ago although there's probably room for several.
- R2 I tried to link the thread address but kept getting message it wasnt linking correctly. The title of the Pt. 2 thred is "Travis Alexander/Nancy Grace/Jane Velez thread Part 2. Quacking and fetishes and Mormons and outrage"
- Got it R3. Thanks for the heads up.
My search didn't turn up the Part 2 thread because I used "Jodi Arias" as the search term, and her full name wasn't in the title and hasn't been used in any of the posts yet.
Oh well. I linked it here, and I'll use that one.
http://www.datalounge.com/cgi-bin/iowa/ajax.html%3Ft%3D12543572%23page:showThread%2C12543572
- I couldn't find a Part 3 of that ongoing, but maxed-out thread.
That medical examiner dude is handsome. I wasn't following the trial the first time he testified (the first week in January?!?!?!?) so this is the first time I've seen him. He gets my vote for hottest dude associated with the trial - but to be fair, there are slim pickings with this one.
Jodi did a pretty good job with the fake tears while they were showing autopsy photos. She wasn't at all over-the-top. But I do feel bad for the wheelchair grandma (the owner of the gun Jodi stole and used to murder Travis) as her presence seems to be a desperation tool for the defense.
Wheel an elderly & handicapped family member into the courtroom so Jodi can be seen frequently looking back to the gallery for some sympathetic familial supportive glances. This seems especially useful when hard scientific evidence is being presented that would disprove much of what the defendant has said on the stand. - That move must come straight out of some defense attorney handbook of tricks and stunts.
- Oh boy, another juror excused. Bye bye No. 8. Hopefully Beth Karas as the scoop on why.
Trial done until next Wednesday because the last witness isn't available until then. Hopefully they are right about closing arguments on Thurs and Fri and then the jury finally gets to begin their discussions.
- Apparently nobody (besides the court) knows why juror 8 was let go.
And the guy wouldn't answer a reporter's questions as he was leaving the courthouse. Too bad since he's so close to the end.
- While I've been an active poster in the other two threads on this trial, I'm glad it's winding down. I can only imagine how the jurors and anyone actually involved in the trial must feel.
My prediction is she will be found guilty and will get life w/out parole. While I think she should get the death penalty, she probably won't.
I'm also predicting jury deliberation will not be a long process. Whether it's the verdict I predicted above or maybe even a hung jury, it will probably come relatively quick.
- As things stand right now, I would agree with you R9. I'm feeling a very short deliberation with a guilty verdict, but the point that will take the time is disagreement between jurors about giving not the death penalty and they will ultimately settle on life in prison.
But my feeling might change next week based on whatever the final defense witness has to say, and how strong or convincing each of the sides does in closing.
- I couldn't find part 3 of the other thread, so I guess this is it.
R8. It appears that juror #8 was dismissed for getting a DUI last Saturday night.
- They say juries won't sentence females to death, but I think there have been a few. Maybe not as cute as she is though.
Didn't help Ted Bundy but probably made him harder to catch - and he's a guy whose last victim was a 12 year old girl in the Deep South.
- Is this the new quacking thread?
- I think it is.
Last surrebuttal witness from the defense on Wednesday....probably direct examination by Jennifer Baldspot....
Judge Sherry "Samantha" Stephens says they will stay Wednesday until they are finished.
Jury instructions and closing arguments start on Thursday....so hopefully just a few days left until Jodi knows her fate...and the result of her crime and her lies.
I am hoping for First Degree and Death Penalty...but ya never know!
Nathan%20%26%20Dickie
- He was supposedly a virgin when he met her, and told friends he felt depressed about breaking his sacred Mormon vows of chastity. I guess he felt it would all be forgiven if he went ahead and married her.
- r15, you aren't following the case very well. That's probably a good thing as I'm sure I pay more attention to it than I should.
Travis wasn't a virgin prior to his relationship with Jodi. As was testified to just last week he had pre-marital sex with at least one of his previous girlfriends, and had dealt with the ramifications of his church through the bishop.
I don't believe there has been anything either in court testimony or info from outside the courtroom that indicates he dealt with any depression.
- I believe that the Tsarnaev mother Zubeidat is on the record claiming that Jodi has been framed.
She is convinced the entire "murder" was just a play and the blood found in the bathroom was red paint.
She could be on to something. She's been right on about accusations like this previously.
- If I heard correctly, instructions for deliberation will be handed down to the jury before the attorneys give closing arguments. If that's accurate, we could see that happen Weds. PM at the end of the day. It sounds like Thurs. and Fri. are dedicated to closing arguments.
- How can so much information be KEPT FROM a jury? The final 12 may still have surmised that Jodi's a psychopath.
What's the background on why various jurors have been dismissed?
Does anyone else think the Defense is being given more opportunities/breaks than it deserves?
anonymous
- Juan Martinez helped put another woman on death row for murdering her husband.
- What is the consensus on Jodi's clinical diagnosis? Borderline & psychopath? I think one commentator on HLN said the insanity plea was not made for some reason, possibly because of all the evidence that the act was premeditated?
anonymous
- I wonder how serious Judge Stephens is about sticking to that schedule she stated. Tomorrow they are just going to go and go until the final witness is done.
They may need a dinner break and then some. And if Nurmi does any stupid questioning like he did last week asking the detective about the measurements he took of the different shelves in Travis' bedroom (Did you measure from this shelf to this shelf? Did you measure from this shelf to the floor? Did you measure from shelf 3 to the shelf 5?) actually maybe she'd finally lay the smack down on some of his nonsense, time-wasting questions.
But I guess it will be Willmot tomorrow since it supposed to be another head-shrinker type witness, so Nurmi can just sit back and listen to his stomach gurgle as his dinner time is approaching.
Any of you that watch on the East Coast might be in for a late night.
- The Defense expert witness today is apparently a full time expert witness. He was former clinical but now just hires out for expert testimony. If this is true, Juan Martinez will have him for lunch.
- r11 was right on about the most recent juror that was let go. DUI the previous weekend. Actually 'extreme DUI' for being more than twice over the legal limit.
I'm not surprised that someone sitting on this jury for 5 months would want to have some cocktails, but driving home is what did him in.
http://www.hlntv.com/article/2013/04/30/arias-juror-was-arrested-extreme-dui-dismissal
- Today's witness is pretty likeable.
- That mitigation specialist that sits behind Nurmi is dressed like she's ready to hit the club as soon as they recess for the day. Evacuate the dance floor!
- So glad this mess is almost over!
Now HLN can start obsessing about George Zimmerman, but no one will care because the victim was black.

Why do you presume they are stupid time wasting questions? Just because you may not understand their relevance doesn't make them irrelevant.
It is often the case that questions are asked so that testimony and evidence solicited can be argued in closings.
When you close your mind to one side or the other then you miss out on things.
- Oh this ought to be good...the Defense witness just admitted his limited association to Shrinking Violette. The Defense was questioning in a proactive move to get his dirty laundry on the table before Juan M. does. His association with her just cut him off at the knees.
Juan M. just perked up a little.
- Jodi is doing all her scribbling and note taking with her right hand today. Seems like the other times I've seen her doing it she was always using the left.
Not significant of anything, but I'm curious about what makes ambidextrous folks switch up. She has the same amount of table space in front of her today as usual.
- This so called expert for the defense is another Violette, he rattles on and on about nothing. Martinez should have a field day with what he said what he is affiliated with, it was a laundry list. He is boring as hell.
- Maria the Mitigation Specialist keeps checking her watch and tapping her finger on the table impatiently.
She doesn't want to be late for 2-for-1 margarita night at ChiChis.
Happy%20Hour%20with%20the%20girls
- Color me surprised, but today was the first time I've noticed Jodi's crazy eyes.
She turned her head and looked around the courtroom, and her eyes got all wide, and crazy looking.
Wonder if that's what Travis saw the day she killed him?
Fucking.%20Scary.
- Martinez has this gun for hire on the ropes. Its fun to see him squirm.
- So, what was the motive?
I read somewhere that during her police interrogation, when the cops filed out for a bit, unaware that the cameras were still recording, she magically stopped crying and chuckled to herself. Then she did a handstand against the wall.
- She took Fatal Attraction to heart, she couldn't have him and no one else would either and she threw in the shower scene from Psycho. When you see Jodi you see the girl in the Bad Seed grown. Some people are just evil and she is one.
- I wonder if Jodi is medicated now. She appears so much more calm and settled today than she did last week.
Maybe it's just because they have a 'friendly' witness on the stand.
- The hot(ish) medical examiner is back on the stand.
- Yeh, R37, no "migraines" today as there is a friendly witness on the stand. Notice how she is busy scribbling and not looking up when there is anyone on the stand who has not succumbed to her "charms."
Anonymous
- He's not a medical examiner. And not hot.
- The ME reminds me of Rob Lowe.
Why the fuck is there a sudden drive to complete the trial by having this marathon ending? They met for 5 hours a day, 3 days per week on average.
Wimott is trying to be like Juan with the ME and it's not working. She's just annoying.
- Dr. Kevin Horn IS the Maricopa County Medical Examiner, r40.
As to the 'hotness,' that's a matter of opinion of course.
- Right, R41, Willmott's whiney, high-pitched and nasal "right?" at tne end of her useless interrogations is giving me lockjaw.
Anonymous
- Oh no, the typo in the ME report that just came out!
The Defense is salivating all over their table. This better not cause a mistrial!
- I'm posting the link below for the live feed in the event it's of use to anyone.
I'm not going to watch the pause and play on HLN from now until sunrise.
There's actually a new witness on right now that followed the ME testimony.
http://www.wptv.com/generic/news/national/Jodi-Arias-trial-live-video
- Why this freakin allnighter? Seems like so many episodes in this saga help the defense. Dismissing jurors right up there.
WTF
- TY r45 for the link, I've been watching on CNN. This is much better.
- Post her wigged-out pussy pic here again. That was scary.
- Has any shrink come forward to publicly offer a diagnosis of Jodi? Are her parents messed up?
Anonymous
- Tigers and Bears, oh my!
It's getting crazy in the courtroom after business hours. I wonder if anyone ordered pizza.
Can't wait to hear the jury questions for this lady. I think she explains stuff with such a clear style and makes stuff makes sense.
- Love this current expert witness by the Prosecutor. Jennifer is destroying their case minute by minute.
The witness is nailing the lying pattern, no matter how benign the lie appears, to the wall. And JM get the last redirect since it's his witness.
The Defense should have left well enough alone last week. And the jury questions from earlier today were not Jodi-friendly.
- It's over...jury just left.
Closing arguments tomorrow!
- wow, no jury questions. Either it was because everything was so clear (and Wilmott couldn't stir up anything), or cause they just wanna get the hell out of there.
- JM won the day again. Of course Jodi is sure she is another Casey Anthony and will be walking out of court.
- R53 it probably both although I think her answers were pretty clear and left JW a little bruised.
The whole tiger/bear thing backfired in JW's face and ended the testimony portion of this trial on a perfect note for the Prosecution. This witness didn't flinch or hesitate when calling Jodi a liar. And I think she said it twice. No doubt that resonated with the jury.
R54 was correct. Juan M. won the day.
- I am totally against the death penalty, but part of me wants to see them sentence her to it just to see her reaction.
She reminds me of Divine in "Female Trouble" or Kathleen Turner in "Serial Mom". It was all about making murder celebrity. That's really how she strikes me. She's such a narcissist, she's loving every minute of it.
- For me I like the commentary that Dr Drew has on his show on HLN. Never really watched him before but there are lots of good guests with expertise.
Vinny Politan was so excited hosting the late hours on HLN...wonder what his reaction will be at verdict time.
Saw all the old hosts at the Scott Peterson trial in Redwood City. They are all good looking in person.
It%20is%20turing%20into%20an%20OJ%20trial.....
- Agreed, R57, Dr. Drew's "Behavior Bureau" is consistently on target and fascinating when it comes to analyzing Jodi's behavior, as they are seasoned mental health professionals, attorneys and body language experts. Catnip!
Emperor Has No Clothes
- I don't like this delay this morning. I'm scared the typo in the ME report from yesterday is something the Defense is jumping on behind closed doors.
I'll feel better once Juan M. closing statement actually begins.
- Juan Martinez deserves the Medal of Honor.
hoping for murderoneconviction
- Did Jodi ever explain why she blamed ninjas?
The Voice of the Night
- K Nurmi is leading a yawn-fest this morning.
Trying to match the impact of Juan Martinez on Thursday is virtually impossible. And Juan gets the last rebuttal (although it was alluded to that the Defense can appeal for a sur-rebuttal?)
- Thanks for this update as I cannot watch today. Caught clips of Martinez on Nancy Grace and Dr Drew last night and he was extremely effective in every way, including "classily" advocating for the dead victim.
JusticeForTravis
- You are missing very little today. Nurmi is boring. Beth Karas just said the defense had letters from Travis admitting to being a pedo and wanted them allowed in court but they were denied. Turns out they were forged by Guess who, Jodi. The state wanted to use them but not allowed either.
- [quote]Did Jodi ever explain why she blamed ninjas?
I don't remember ever hearing an explanation on why she chose to make them ninjas, VOTN. It seems like she went a step too far in creating that detail. It might have been more believable to just make them 'masked intruders' and leave it at that.
On another note - I'm watching HLN over the lunch break today and just heard something really bothersome. They might have reported this previously, but this is the first time I've heard it.
Beth Karas said that Jodi was in possession of letters that Travis had written to her in which he had confessed to having attraction to underaged boys. Of course the defense wanted to use them in trial, but in the pre-trial litigation it was determined that Jodi had FORGED the letters while she was in jail.
The court decided that neither side could have anything about those letters or Jodi creating them presented to this jury.
There is so much information that the jury isn't privy to in this case, and some of it is with good reason. But I'd say that if it can be verified that she manufactured evidence to support her own case, it should be allowed.
- [quote]Caught clips of Martinez on Nancy Grace and Dr Drew last night and he was extremely effective in every way, including "classily" advocating for the dead victim.
I love when people on here just regurgitate what talking heads have said and pretend that it's their own take/words. Then these people wonder why the outcome of the trial didn't produce the result that they wanted/expected. HLN is an entertainment channel. Don't take it as a news network.
Furthermore, Jane Velez-Mitchell owns this case. She's the one who brought national attention to it. Fuck Grace right up the ass. She failed to deliver on Casey Anthony! lmao
- R66 = that manimal Donoven who tweets for Jodi.
- I want to hear Juan say "Booty Call" several more times.
- Is Juan gay? Does anyone know? Not that it is indicative of much but he does not wear a wedding ring.
- R66, you chose the wrong person to accuse of "regurgitating" what the talking heads say.
No court stenographer
- If the anchors and analysts FOR ONCE get it right, R66, don't take it out on the viewers who agree with them.
: (
- [quote] But I'd say that if it can be verified that she manufactured evidence to support her own case, it should be allowed.
Of course that could be the problem. In any event it seems to be a collateral issue and though it could be argued it goes to her credibility which would make it non-collateral, there may have been some question about proving up the state's argument.
Trial viewers start to believe they have all the facts and details of a case and the various issues that arise during the case when they often don't. Collateral matters that don't go to the elements of the offense are thought to be too time consuming and distracting to the jury. To prove it you'd have to have a mini-trial on the issue. This is not a judge that is very defense oriented so if she could have let it in she would have.
Why do some posters jump on anyone who offers an opposing view accusing them of being Team Jodi? This isn't about "Teams". For some, it is possible to have a discussion about the trial and the conduct of the trial in an objective manner without being team anyone.
- Maybe it's the way it's presented. Nothing wrong with opposing views but look at the verbiage and approach.
- Help me, I'm finding Juan hot.
- Juan is tres hot and his intelligence only adds to his appeal.
Someone asked me why Martinez didn't try to get Jodi "in contempt" of court because of all her lying on the stand, specifically. My only response was that Martinez wanted a conviction, not a mistrial. So he wove her pathological lying into the trial in another way. Anyone's views?
Anonymous

Come on 65 do you honestly believe they even need that as evidence? Are you afraid that the prosecution case is so weak that needs to be piled on?
If they used nothing but the autopsy and blood evidence and the gas can bullshit they still would get a conviction.
- Yes, he could use her lying to his advantage so he adapted. Calling for a mistrial means it's not going your way.
- Thanks, R77. Is it true that the jury could not discuss the trial with each other at any time during the 4 months this went on and can only confer with each other now that official deliberations have begun?
previous poster
- Well I'm down was hoping for a felony murder decision tonight, but jury went home.
- Is the trial over? Has it been turned over to the jury?
- R75, I'm missing your point? What would cause a mistrial and why?
- yes....jury has the case. They have elected to deliberate Mon-Fri 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
They elected a foreman and left for the day.
Della%20Street
- Juan M. closing argument and rebuttal were compelling. Not only did he prove pre-meditation (IMHO) but he also was very passionate about wiping out the theory that Travis was a pedophile. He determination seemed genuine in making sure that would not be part of his legacy.
- In a way I sort of feel badly for Nurmi. He has nothing to work with and I suppose he did what he could, but he wanted off the case multiple times and was denied. The best part of his (yes, crappy)closing argument is when he said he didn't like Jodi. Watch this bitch grin:
http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DnNjuS1MUNOE
- My guess is that she is laughing because she proud of herself for getting under his skin and that he has to defend her in spite of his feelings for her.
- Verdict watch BUMP
- This all should be read in conjunction with the "You all misunderstand borderline personality disorder" thread.
siamese twins
- I'm predicting the verdict will be reached and announced by Tuesday afternoon.
The jury has had four months of trial to have some sort of idea on level of guilt. And unlike some trials, Jodi Arias took the stand and testified. It seems like theres much less guess work for a jury if the defendent testifies. Juan Martinez did a good job reminding the jury of the numerous lies she told to their face. The Walmart thing was a prime example of getting caught in a lie. Nurmi got that dead wrong in his closing argument.
I always wondered we didn't hear more from the car rental place. In my experience, you never drive off a rental car lot without a walk around inspection with the rental agent. And an upside down license plate would be impossible to overlook. For whatever the reason, neither side ever brought that up.
Just wait and see how she will turn on her lawyers. If she gets a lesser charge or acquitted, she'll credit herself. If it ends with first degree murder, she'll turn on Jennifer W. and K. Nurmi in a flash. Jennifer W.'s buddy-like behavior will all the sudden be used against her when Jodi starts her appeals.
- If the jury comes back with anything but 1st degree murder, they are stupid. In my opinion, Martinez proved 1st degree murder. I don't think she'll get the death penalty but will get life in prison without the possibility of parole.
- I agree R89.
Then I heard one of the talking heads describe a young male juror in a hoodie. I kept envisioning a young 23yo male who might be smitten with Jodi.
I obviously know nothing about him. It was just the image I got of a testosterone driven young male when they described him.
- Real fucking funny, bitch. What is with her nose?
- It's not about her nose 91.
It's about the evidence.
- Juan Martinez: This individual, um, the defendant Jodi Ann Arias, killed Travis Alexander. And even after stabbing him over and over again, and even after slashing his throat from ear to ear and then even after taking a gun and shooting him in the face, she will not let him rest in peace.
But now, instead of a gun, instead of a knife she uses lies. And she uses these lies in court when she testified to stage the scene for you. Just like she staged the scene for the police, after she killed Mr. Alexander. And this woman, who would stage the scene, has even attempted to stage the scene through the use of the media. She has courted the media, she has gone on national television. You've seen the programs and you've seen some of the -- her words to the media. She has also attempted, or gone out in search of the limelight. She has signed a manifesto, just in case she becomes famous. And to top it all off, she has indicated that she is innocent. That no jury will convict her. That none of you, will convict her, after she has staged the scene for you.
Well, she is an individual, as you have seen, who has craved the limelight. So, it seems that it is only fitting, that this individual that has craved the limelight, it is really only fitting that she now bask in a different kind of light: the light of truth.

transcript%20of%20closing
- With three (or is it four) jurors dismissed, the current jury has many more men than women on it. (One source online says 10 men - could this be true?) Studies show that men can go easy on female defendants, especially when the women are trim. I hope the men on the jury don't go easy on Jodi and try to persuade the rest of the jury to go along with them.
biting my nails over this
- No, the jury is made up of 8 men and 4 women.
The 3 alternates are 2 men and 1 woman.
- AZ is a conservative state. Jan Brewer is the Govenor. Death penalty is an option.
Not much wiggle room for the shenanigans of Jodi Arias. And I'm not talking about the sex. The lies, smugness, snarkiness, brutality, along with strong evidence of pre-meditation will end with a first-degree conviction.
- What in the world are they still deliberating about?
Did they just want one more free lunch on the state's dime?
Also, set your DVRs, Fuckface von Clownstick is going to be offering Jodi legal advice on tonight's Nancy Grace. No, seriously.
The Voice of the Night
- I can't take Donald Trump and his commentary about Jodi Ariars.
- Nancy disGrace is getting her analysis from Donald Trump. I'm not shitting you. She keeps bringing him up. "Did you hear what me and Donald Trump said?" I wish someone would run this bitch over and do the world a favor!
- HLN = white trash viewer network.
- Did they deliberate today but still have no verdict? I am really surprised if that is the case. What the fuck could they really have to deliberate about?
- r101 gets all her info and expertise from HLN, the network for dumbasses.
- I don't have a problem with no verdict yet. This trial has been going on for 4 months, and there has been a ton of evidence. Sure, Jodi is guilty as fuck, but her life is in their hands now, and it's good that they're taking it seriously.
Can someone start a thread on Amanda Berry, Michelle Knight and Gina Dejesus? They are three girls who went missing over 10 years ago in Cleveland in separate incidents and they have escaped their captor today. Thanks.
http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2013/05/tv_station_reports_berry_dejes.html
- Let's hope they deliberate till they all agree that she should get the death penalty.
Anonymous
- They haven't even been deliberating that long. Nancy, Jane, Vinnie would have you think they've been in there for 10 days.
On Friday, they probably had time to pee, elect a jury foreman, and vent a little. I doubt much deliberating, if any, was done Friday. Their one hour together was more about logistics and starting fresh on Monday.
I think we'll hear the verdict by Tuesday afternoon.
- The Scott Peterson Jury deliberated for 7 full days, and he got Murder 1 + the DP. Granted, he didn't testify or admit he was guilty, but some would argue that the evidence in that case was even more overwhelming. I everyone needs to let the Jury do its job.
- Although the jury has been instructed not to watch the media or read anything about this case throughout the trial, do they have a clue of some sort how people are gathering to hear the verdict? Have they seen the circus JVM is hosting in some plaza area that is adjacent(?) to the courthouse? Do they walk past all the signs and posters people bring?
They keep showing the exterior of the building and if the deliberation room has windows, they would have to have some idea of the frenzy awaiting their verdict.
- I just received a tweet from one of the twitter feeds I follow from people following the trial that said Juan M. just entered through the Jury door with a very happy look on his face. Is it possible that the jurors are not struggling with M1 but with what is premeditated vs. Felony M1? That is a major part of the instructions.
Each one of them has to weigh in on if M1 is premeditated, felony or both. And, they may be having trouble with the Felony murder 1 aspect (I know I would).
- Verdict will be read at 1:30pm PST
- Who had Wednesday in the verdict pool? I would have if I hadn't made my call before they announced that they weren't going to deliberate over the weekend at all. I picked Monday because I assumed 2 full days of deliberations.
Anyway, back to the courtroom at 1 pm (Pacific) tomorrow to start the hearing for the penalty phase.
- Dude, I hate to admit this, but I find Jody Arias hot. Very sexy and naughty girlish.
- I'd say she's in the running for the ultimate naughty girl, r111. You should try to date her.
- The drama has not ceased simply because of a first degree conviction. Jodi continues to show no remorse while doing an interview that has compromised what the defense counsel can do for her in the next phase of the sentencing.
anonymous
- r113 just regurgitates Nancy Grace talking points.
- If you want to get some laughs, I would suggest going to jodiariasisinnocent.com and read those comments. There are several people who actually still believe her second story regarding the ninjas. Not to mention numerous comments about how awful Travis' family is-that they are only "in it for the money."
- I'm glad the judge gave the jury the chance to sleep in before starting the penalty phase?
Since the jury found first degree with premeditation (I think that was the finding that was unanimous) and a majority also found it as felony murder, does that mean the only sentencing options are life with no parol and death?
I was listening to talking heads on the Phoenix ABC station's app because I wasn't home when the verdict was read, but they made it sound like the judge is the one who decides if the severity of the crime is great enough to warrant a death sentence. Why is the jury there?
The Voice of the Night
- So what happened today?
Why is court cancelled?
Delayed until next Wednesday? Is that correct?
- That's what was announced. She's playing the system again. That whole "I would rather die" thing probably sent things on a different course. It won't change the inevitable but allows her the continued publicity she craves.
- HA! Jane Velez Mitchell just verbally slapped down by EMT personnel! Ouch!
- [quote]Why is court cancelled?
They didn't give one. So Jodi drags this process out even longer, costing the state more money, and giving Nancy Grace a reason to live.
The Voice of the Night
- So in that interview Jodi did yesterday immediately after the verdict was read, she claimed that the reason she tried to plead guilty to 2nd degree murder (which she did prior to this trial starting) was because she wanted to protect the reputation of the man she slaughtered and not tell stories about his life that could tarnish his reputation. Not because she she didn't want to face the harsher sentence of life in prison or the death penalty, but because this innocent angel would accept some jail time in exchange for her 'silence.'
Bitch is a saint!
Who the fuck would ever believe that? This chick would be cool with spending a minimum of 10 years in jail in order to not have to besmirch the character of her dead ex-boyfriend? The boyfriend who according to her (and not a single other person on the planet, apparently) was a horrible and deviant soul. Of course!
Actually, I take that back. There are plenty who do believe what she dishes out, including some that post on here.
- She wants to die quickly..fuck her, make her rot in jail the rest of her life. She didn't give Travis any choice.
- Now that I think about it - in reading about celebrated cases - this reminds me a bit of Leopold & Loeb.
Nathan Leopold was so infatuated with Richard Loeb and wanted him so badly - some people were convinced that he left his glasses behind so that they would be discovered....
So that their names would be linked together forever and they would not be spoken of individually at all.
Maybe Jodi thinks that this trial and all her crap will guarantee that her name and Travis' will ALWAYS be spoken together. Linked in death.

- Give it a rest, R121.
You don't have to like the woman or even think she should have been acquitted to see that there is a cult like support for Travis who seemed to me like a egotistical douche. These Travis "supporters" have put on a show for the media and the public trying to depict him as perfect and her as the devil. I doubt that is an accurate depiction of either of them.
The Travis fans and friends have been ruthless and predatory in their efforts to try to shut down and even destroy anyone [see what they did to defense witnesses] who tries to offer a differing viewpoint or a more balanced reading of these events.
From various sources, including his own writings, I think he treated her like dirt and he played all his fawning "followers" for fools - pretending he was some charismatic virgin. Please. He needed to keep living that lie to keep his career as a salesman and wannabe leader and author. He needed to maintain his lies to keep that following. If she threatened to reveal that facade it isn't hard to envision him getting angry at her or panicking and doing who knows what. So yea I have my question about this case.
I have questions about his trying to label her a stalker when he was willingly continuing their relationship until his death. That was a deliberate lie he put out there about her. I also think it was possible that he was abusive toward her. Just reading his writings, listening to him and about him makes me think he could have been abusive to her. He was controlling. It doesn't matter that all his fans and friends say he was wonderful and would never hurt anyone - it's clear he lied to them about this other aspect of his life with her so they didn't really know him.
In any event, the appeal should be a field day for a good attorney. There are serious issues with the decisions and conduct of the judge, the prosecutor and the defense attorneys. Though this is Arizona where I never hold much hope for a fair trial or fair appeal for anyone.
This should never have even been a death penalty case. No death is pretty nor is it without some element of cruelty - it is killing someone after all - but the DP is supposed to be reserved for murders with special circumstances and aggravating factors. I don't see that here. Of course, again, it's Arizona.
- There is not a single person on this thread with an original thought. Everything comes from watching HLN. Except what I say, of course.
The arbiter of intelligence
- R124 I totally agree with you up to the point that Travis was no saint and the fact is that he was pretending to be a Mormon abstaining from sex when he wasn't at all. He was a douche.
BUT this is where we part company on this as he didn't deserve to be murdered by Jodi no matter how much of a phony ass he was or what he did. Her claim was self defense -- only after she lied and said two "ninjas" killed Travis -- but with 29 stab wounds that included many in the back, plus an ear to ear throat slicing and a bullet to the head? This is undue cruelty and was a sick joke to be tried as self defense. Why can't you admit that?
Wake up.
Anonymous
- HLN is awful. You'd think they'd be embarrassed by their media circus but they are making too much money off this.
- NO ONE SAID HE DESERVED TO BE MURDERED.
Jeez. Give that cliche a break. Discussing differences or even mitigation does not mean she should have killed him.
But having said that, there were prosecution inferences I couldn't buy from the evidence offered so he didn't destroy her testimony as much as Travis fans thought he did.
But if you start from the proposition that everything she says is a lie (even before she took the stand) and that everything the prosecutor (who developed his own cult like following LOL!) proffered was the absolute truth including that all his inferences were accurate, then naturally you can't continence any debate in your mind.
I think the existence of the number of wounds and even the different weapons was a strong indication here was a battle going on between these two. It tells me whoever started it- that Travis wasn't going down and was still active. It doesn't show cruelty. Or maybe I should say it shouldn't be grounds for the death penalty. All killing is cruel unless you surreptitiously put someone to sleep.
During a physical fight bodies are usually in constant movement - there was a plausible explanation offered as to why there were so many back wounds that could have been consistent with self-defense with her under him. Her earlier denials and the crazy stories offered are irrelevant to an analysis of the scene. It isn't unusual for there to be denials before an admission.
So for me there were factors that gave me a reasonable doubt about the degree of guilt. Tehre was lots of superfluous and for me irrelevant factors discussed. All it takes is one reasonable doubt to reduce the verdict to a lesser degree. One reasonable doubt about any of the elements of the offenses charged.
I wasn't that impressed with the defense but then I was also not impressed with the prosecutor or the judge.
Again no one has said Travis deserved to die unless he instilled in her a reasonable fear for her life or safety at that time. Just like people have used everything on Arias' background to judge her and the case, I have also used Travis' background to judge whether it was possible that he placed her in fear for her life or safety that night.
R124
- I appreciate your sober viewing of all the evidence 128 and I agree with saying Travis was no angel. He played with fire and got fucked up. But it is clear Jodi premeditated the killing. She bought the gas cans, she had another rendezvous already planned with the new boyfriend but made the detour to Travis. The missing gun from grandma etc. She planned to kill him. No self defense there buddy. I just don't see it.
The other thing though is about the death penalty, it has been puzzling me and I have been uneasy about the fact it is on the table and I didn't know why until reading some of the comments on the last page. There are no special circumstances in this case. One person murdered another person. Motive? She says self defense and that was not proven IMO. So why? She's crazy? I think so. So do we now put to death anyone who murders no matter the circumstances? Do we now put to death murders who are liars cause their lying pisses us off? Are we going to break it down to stabbing someone 12 times is okay so long as you don't shoot them or cut their throat but if you stab some one 20 times or more and shoot them and cut their throat you gonna die.
That's what was bothering me. Or does over kill count as special circumstance?
Ohio prosecutors are considering the death penalty for Ariel Castro for him causing the captives to miscarry by beating them until they aborted. I agree he's a monster but I think we'd better calm down before we allow the darkness in the criminal element to infect all of us.
- The death sentence is not only appropriate when the premeditated crime is considered physically heinous but when the defendant has a psychopathic bent -- a menace to society. Jodi qualifies...not simply because jurors or the public "don't like her" or want to punish her for her lying.
Anonymous
- Couldn't it be said that anyone who commits murder is a psychopath? So does that mean we put all murderers to death?
Should we put all psychopaths to death?
- [quote]So does that mean we put all murderers to death?
When it's murder and not manslaughter or self-defense, why not?

Abso-fucking-lutely. The sooner, the better.

HLN is OUT of control with this trial.
Wonder if they will act this way with George Zimmerman?
- R134 she has no boundaries. And regarding the Zimmerman case, it probably be worse than the JA trial. I don't plan to find out though.
I followed this case primarily because of the first thread which had 'quacking' in the title. The quacking between NG and JVM was not unusual, it was just a humorous description. Then I watched the live feed of the trial and saw how bat shit crazy JA is. It was the perfect storm: NG, JVM, and ballsy female defendent.
It spun out of control with constant coverage by every other talking head. Then they developed a nightly show called After Hours with mock juries, crime scene rebuilding and re-enactments, etc. Just when you thought it couldn't get worse, JVM hosts a festival type setting in a plaza next to the courtroom. She gave some man a chance to sing a song he wrote about JA. It might have all been in the spirit of "Justice for Travis" but it was not appropriate and I hope his family never grants an interview to HLN or CNN (or Fox for that matter).
- Clearly a misogynistic jury out for a woman.
- Travis was loathesome and dull and his friends and family who made him out to be a saint and said Jodi's pussy had a spell on him so to speak are too.
She is conniving, certifiable, tenacious and incredibly dangerous. She reminds me of Rove.
The only reason she would like the death penalty is so she can die a misunderstood, wronged, sexy martyr (in her mind.)
I'm so glad they didn't have a chance to spawn.
- If she gets life, she'll be a minor celebrity in jail and will rule the roost with her minions at her feet. She'll sell her art and write books, give interviews if she's allowed, seduce males and females alike and be set up pretty good.
Death penalty or life in prison will fill her needs.
- I read over at the Jodi support site that juror #8 claims they made up their minds BEFORE deliberations.
- Life in prison or death...it doesn't really matter. As previous posters have stated, Jody has achieved celebrity status and she loves it. She will eat up millions of taxpayers' dollars with either sentence, because I'm sure if she gets death (I don't think she will) appeals will go on for years, maybe decades. Either way, she will need lots of medical and psych services to satisfy her insatiable need for attention.
Life in prison is much worse to me than death but Jody has thrived in jail for years. She will be Miss Popularity and receive tons of fan mail and marriage proposals.
I have no legal experience so would love to hear if I'm wrong.
- Death is worse than life in prison, period. Living on death row while going through the appeal process until she's put to death (approx 12 yrs) is the next best thing. I wouln't want her to get life (with or without parole) to LIVE and continue to taunt the family and thrive in jail, as many have stated previously.
And, it really doesn't need to be stated that Travis wasn't an angel, no one is! He liked to fuck, the same as her other boyfriends. I wouldn't want anyone in my family murdered the way he was because some girl couldn't let go.
- That's what I also think R141. Both sentences are dismal. And being on death row would be worse as far as isolation, activity, etc. In addition to a dismal, confined existence, you would be dealing with a tedious, red-taped process of trying to appeal your sentence (for those who decide to appeal).
When they get to resume the penalty phase, I do think she will end up with death penalty. Not because of her Fox interview following the guilty verdict, but because his murder seems to fit the 'heinous' criteria that's needed.
FWIW, I do think she bit off more than could chew with that Fox interview. She knew it would be attention grabbing but probably didn't realize the fullest repercussions. I bet she finally did have genuine meltdown once in the psych ward and wearing paper clothes. Her world has literally ended.
- I agree with others who have said that Travis didn't deserve to be murdered and he wasn't a saint. Travis'friends and families have annoyed me quite a bit over the past few years. I lived in Phoenix when the murder happened. His friends and families were annoying with the whole "Travis was a good Mormon/good guy" spiel since the beginning. I still chuckle when I think about an interview Travis' brother gave where he said "Jodi stole Travis'virginity".
Travis lived a double life. In one life, he was fucking Jodi, and in the other life he was a "perfect Mormon" role model. His friends and relatives are never going to fully accept that Travis wasn't the perfect guy they thought he was.
- Nurmi told Jodi she has NO mitigating factors !!
- His friends now smugly throw around the words "psychopath" and "sociopath". But the truth is she duped them all. And they hate that.
- Looks like Donavan is posting on this thread.
- Geraldo's interviewing Jodi tonight.
- Does the penalty phase start today, or are they recessed until Wednesday as someone stated upthread?
The Voice of the Night
- Ah, so Jodi was on suicide watch over the weekend.
Any attention is good attention.
The Voice of the Night
- Today that jury decided that the murder was exceptionally brutal or cruel (or whatever the exact wording is).
That now gives them the option to officially consider the death penalty as a possible sentence.
- I can't imagine being on death row and only showering 3 times a week.... I have no sympathy for Jodi. Travis was no angel but he was no worse than a lot of other people and she had the option to leave the relationship. What kind of person butchers someone this way. She is the pinup for the death penalty.
- I'm curious to see if Jodi, or whoever else, is going to make a plea for a life sentence and not death. I'd bet JA won't miss the chance to get in front the jury. She can physically stand where the lawyers did and present her plea.
While there is usually little info learned from JVM, she did make an interesting point today about Jodi not apologizing or giving too much acknowledgment about the crime. Apparently, expressing too much remorse can jeopardize an appeal.
- My input here is not to argue about the moral implications of the death penalty. Jodi seems to create problems and drama to FEEL SOMETHING because she feels so dead inside. So if Jodi is not capable of feeling contrition or remorse (and she has shown NONE since her conviction), imposing the death penalty may not have an effect on her...especially as the state's anesthesia and needle is more humane than an electric chair, a noose or slow, painful death through cyanide poisoning, for example. Since Jodi is an attention hound and would likely flourish in a group environment in prison, perhaps living on death row where she is in solitary would be a way for her to experience a sort of punishment that would resonate.
Appropriate punishment
- [quote]Geraldo's interviewing Jodi tonight.
Was his look at her redeeming qualities anything like the opening of Al Capone's vault?
- Holy crap! I can't believe all the shit JA and her defense keep throwing up to the court. It's insane. I know her attorneys are trying to maximize every option but it's beyond ridiculous. Now this has stretched out until Tuesday!
She's got to be agitating the jury beyond all reason at this point where they think she's playing them. I think they would have given her death today and it won't be any different tomorrow.
- Nobody is speaking on behalf of Jodi at today's trial hearings.

- What happened with the character witness who bailed? I half-saw something about that on the news before the tornadoes took the lead.
The Voice of the Night
- The female character witess has an arrest record for drugs, is on welfare & did not tell the IRS, or the Welfare Dept, that she rec'd monies from news outlets using her wedding video, etc. This witness knew if she got on the stand the prosecutor would rip her to shreds. The excuse the defense attorney gave was that she'd rec'd death threats, and as such was too frightened to testify, but I'm sure that was total BS.
- Death threats from whom? The same Internet bullies gunning for Crazy Amy?
The Voice of the Night
- Thanks for sharing that backstory about the witness who didn't testify!
anonymous
- Any word as to why her ex-boyfriend also didn't get on the stand? He was ready and available even though the best friend with questionable character decided not to speak.
I got the impression that the defense just decided to give up on presenting witnesses for this phase when the judge once again refused another request for mistrial and also didn't allow Nurmi and Wilmot to remove themselves from the case.
It almost had the feeling of them throwing up their hands to say they give up, but it had to be more strategic than that. Later whoever files the appeal can argue that the attorneys didn't provide a substantial enough case for the penalty phase.
Why were none of Jodi's family members going to testify in an effort to spare her life? That seems so unusual.
- All those potential witnesses would have pushed her that much quicker to the lethal injection table. The issue with her ex was that he was never going to marry her. JM would have drilled down into that and found out dysfunctional things that wouldn't be in Jodi's favor.
Nurmi and crew are using very specific verbiage that eludes to an appeal. "Ineffective counsel", if determined, would get a new trial. She won't get one, but Nurmi and Wilmott are covering their asses. They can't wait to get out of there.
- Jodi's BF gave an interview today even though he was 'too frightened to testify due to death threats'.
Basically he was at the court house, ready to testify, when the defense told him the game was over.

- There were 3 women on Arizona's death row until just last week when a gal who'd been on death row x23 years was granted a new trial. Jodi will die of natural causes before she's ever nuked. Appeals take way too long.
- The best gem from today was JA's manimal friend Donaven.
Donaven is now under investigation by the FBI for associating with JA as she is now a convicted felon. I'm guessing because of Donaven's criminal past, she/he/it is not to associate with convicted felons.
I'm curious to see if Donaven's in court tomorrow.
- Donaven was convicted of torching a dentists office and owes 190k...does anyone know why she/he did this?
- Lesbian drama?
- She's speaking at trial again right now!
Long delay again today. I guess her team keeps trying to quit
- Anyone expecting Jodi to do her best Barbara Graham "I Want To Live" performance would have been disappointed.
Instead it was just a Powerpoint presentation of her life, a commercial advertisement for her artwork, and announcement of her plans to launch the Jodi Arias Charitable Foundation while she is in prison. The 'Foundation' wasn't specifically named, but she did detail many of the good-doings she wants folks to think she plans to spearhead during her incarceration.
- That video with her ex at r163 is good. That guy is really a good guy and even though he is kind of stiff he seems to honestly care about Jodi, he's a good rational decent guy. Don't think anything he said would have made any difference though. Anyone know if any family was supposed to speak for Jodi?
- Empty words. Empty promises. Nothing but a performance and not a very convincing one.
Never apologized and never owned up to the lies she told the jury. Talked about her preference for never having a trial. Her presentation was carefully crafted to minimize anything that could bite her in the ass when she appeals. And that is how she will spend her time: fighting to get out of jail and remain in the headlines.
Her lies to the jury continued with all these projects she could pursue.
- Y'all know Jodi wrote every word of Willmott's closing arguments. Do they (actually just Jodi) really think this is going to save her life?
- I'm watching Jodi's performance being recapped in between Jane Velez-Mitchell and her guests yelling at each other.
I don't believe in the death penalty, and I don't think I could live with myself if I sat on a jury and voted for it, but there's something about Jodi that comes awfully close to making me make an exception. I mean, she's a horrible person, but she's not Pol Pot, Pinochet, or Hitler. I can't figure out why I feel like she deserves it.
I actually think life with no parole would be worse for her, because then she'd just go away and stop getting the attention she's clearly so desperate for.
The Voice of the Night
- She wouldn't go away. I believe with approval she'll still be giving interviews. The latest is that the gag order has been lifted, she's going to be doing several interviews with all the major news/media outlets tonight.
- It was just reported that Jodi requested makeup to use before she starts her interviews tonight.
- R174, from a legal perspective, how is this possible? I just caught a clip in which she is still maintaining that she was a domestic violence victim, and used her statement to the court to fundraise and describe the ways she is going to heroically crusade to improve conditions for women in prison through various programs. NO SHAME.
the outrage continues
- Donovan was not in court today.
Donovan associating with other felons is in violation of her probation. A few tidbits at the link below.
Sounds like a job for Sheriff Arpaio. He seems like the type who would hunt down Donovan just for sport and hold her face up by the hair saying "look what I caught."
http://mixedbagblog.com/2013/05/18/donovan-cant-contact-jodi/
- [quote]She wouldn't go away. I believe with approval she'll still be giving interviews
But at that point, whether or not she could give interviews would be up to the AZ Department of Corrections, not the judge.
And Travis' friends and family could always petition the AZ legislature to pass a law forbidding prisoners serving life sentences from making media appearances. California has a law like that, which is why the only time anyone ever sees the Manson family is at their parole hearings, and at this point, none of them even bother going to those.
The Voice of the Night
- She just has to live ya'll ..... she's going to keep donating that gorgeous hair of hers !!
That is worth saving her life over. NOT.
- Judge announced that jury can't reach and agreement on sentencing at this time and surmised or believed they were looking for guidance, which she offered so they could continue deliberating. If they cannot agree in the end analysis, could this result in a hung jury or mistrial? Since the conviction has already be reached, I hope that will not be the case.
Anonymous
- If they can't come back in agreement then they bring a new jury but just for the penalty phase. They would basically pick up where this jury left off. The conviction stands and they decide life or death.
The tricky part would be finding potential jurors who haven't seen or know anything about this case. It's a small win for the defense and ultimately a bigger win for the prosecution. It's the taxpayers that will continue to lose.
The original jurors are again deliberating so it's not over yet.
- Arizona's system is almost unworkable. Most state's go straight to life without parole is a jury is hung on the death penalty. To retry that only that phase is a very burdensome process. Much of the evidence presented in the guilt phase must be presented again so that the jury is familiar with the underlying facts of the case.
- I did not really follow this as I was following the case about the athlete in South Africa who murdered his beautiful girlfriend claiming that someone had broken into their home when they live in a gated community with security, and it was the middle of the day.
- A few interviews Jodi granted yesterday are starting to surface and in them she is incredibly smug, arrogant, headstrong and even sadistic.

- The jury had sent the judge a handwritten note on an official question form, asking, "If the jury is unable to come to a unanimous decision @ this stage, do we notify the judge of this on the form [verdict] or do we just tell the judge her instruction on the bottom P. 10 on the final jury Instruction-Penalty phase?" It was signed by Juror 18,so I would surmise that he is the foreman. Here's how he was described by a court observer: The Artist-Bald, attractive, glasses, 50′s-60′s, large build, holds his notebook on a binder as if he’s going to sketch. He looks around the gallery a lot. I thought we met eyes a couple of times, but who knows, that room is so huge! This guy also had a very intense gaze. He took some notes. He rubbed his face and tapped his fingers to his lips a lot. He wasn’t the only one doing stuff like that, but I’ll get into that in my notes.

- HUNG JURY!!!
- They will have the retrial starting on July 18th. The judge teared up when thanking the jury. Unfuckingbelievable! It's going to be nearly impossible to get an impartial jury at this point, no?
- I guess the AZ Department of Corrections will have to wait at least six more weeks to get its recycling program.
The Voice of the Night
- Was this judge too lenient throughout the trial? Your thoughts.
Anonymous
- I think the judge did as well as she could. It was likely difficult because she wanted to be sure to leave no room for a mistrial, so she probably was over-accomodating of the defense, but I don't know what she could have done differently.
I'm against the death penalty even for nutjobs like Jodi. Life without parole. I think it's so strange that we put someone on trial for murder and then think that twelve ordinary citizens will have no problem determining that another human being should die.
- Jodi must be thrilled with this outcome. Thrilled might not be the correct word - whatever emotion she is capable of experiencing.
Not only does it mean that at least one person on this jury felt like she deserves to live, but she also can look forward to getting more camera time on the witness stand once again when new jury is in place later this summer.
Win/Win
- The judge started tearing up and shit. She let in bullshit like Travis allegedly liking little boys. This judge should be disbarred! She's an idiot.
- [quote]HUNG JURY!!!
Yum!!!
- I favor the death penalty except for people like Jodi. People like her should get life in prison without parole as long as the prison is a 10x10 cell where she has no contact with anyone for the rest of her life. A Supermax like prison.
- Is that an option, R197? Seems that only death row inmates get the treatment you describe, so am not sure how that would happen. But yes, since she desperately craves attention, solitary confinement would be a thoughtful punishment.
Anonymous
- It might have bought Jodi Arias a little more time but it will ultimately favor the Prosecutor. She will end up with the death penalty. The next jury pool are people who have likely watched the HLN coverage, other media as well as Jodi's coffin building interviews.
It's virtually impossible to have no real knowledge of this case if you live in Phoenix. And the next crew might lean towards a little rough justice.
- I think this is bad for Arias. She got a reprieve, but just think of all the negative-Arias info out there that this jury wasn't exposed to, BUT the new jurors will be privy to.
- That's hopeful, R199. So I suppose that during jury selection, the candidates may claim impartiality when in fact, they have molded opinions, since so many people have been following this trial?
anonymous
- R201, yes. That was my thought. Not that I think it's right, it's just a reality. All the manipulation and craftiness Jodi thought would save her could ultimately come back and do the exact opposite.
- I just saw this in a linked on MSN:
"Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said in a statement Thursday evening that Arias will no longer be permitted to do media interviews and will remain as a closed custody inmate in a county jail near Phoenix, Ariz."
http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/05/23/18452965-arias-jury-hung-on-penalty-phase%3Flite
- That's good, R203. At this time, does the sheriff make this call and not the judge because it's no longer her jurisdiction, and how did he arrive at that decision? As for Jodi's prior media interviews, my guess is that the judge allowed it because she was being lenient to avoid reasons for mistrial or even vindictive actions by Jodi.
Anonymous
- This entire circus has totally been Arias' own doing. She could've copped a plea for a life sentence from the beginning and instead she put the victim on trial and tried to paint herself as the victim instead. Now she deserves anything she gets, not only for what she did to Travis Alexander, but also for what she did to his family and friends with this travesty of a trial.
- Evidently the split was 8 to 4 in favor of death. There is video of the jurors walking out to a bus and its mostly a bunch of old white dudes.
