Why is this aspiration shoved down our throats all the time??
Because it's the PC way to rationalize greed and entitlement.
If you don't want to HAVE IT ALL, you aren't going to work as hard to buy more crap.
And then what r1 said as well--the concept legitimizes selfishness.
Because some of us actually do have it all, and we only want the rest of you know that you can at least aspire to our kinds of lives.
Because there are New Testament passages which support it.
The thing is, giving up on having it all, and just being happy with the things that are important to you, takes a degree of self-awareness.
People who seriously want "it all" just want to impress others, they don't want to think about what is genuinely important to them.
"Movie star manages to have it all - career, home and FAMILEEEEEE!"
I love r8!
Didn't I almost have it all?
As both R1 & R2 have pointed out, mass production and mass distribution have made goods so affordable, the only way to keep the economy growing is through mass consumption (of things we only think we want because of advertising).
It's starting to feel like a giant pyramid scheme and we're going to get left with storage units crammed with stuff.
Of course, if you don't attempt to have it all, the economy collapses and you end up in the same financial position, but without the storage locker full of stuff.
This obsession with "having it all" is driving so many people in this world crazy. We aren't just trying to keep up with the Joneses anymore, but trying to keep up with the rich and famous. The obsession with celebrities and people wanting to be like them had gotten ridiculous.

Not having it all and learning to be happy with what you can attain is the best that we can do and that's cool. I agree "having it all" is all about rationalization of greed and the cause of much misery.
this is an elderlez thread
To me "having it all" means a man, a family and home I love; a job that challenges me and a mind that keeps me curious. I worked hard for those things and I am grateful for them.
