Minnesota politics: who do they keep reelecting Michelle Bachmann?
Could someone explain this to me? This is a pretty liberal state. their senators have included Humphrey, Mondale and McCarthy; their current two senators, Klobuchar and Al Franken, are two of the most respected liberal voices in the country.
Why then do they keep sending Michelle Bachmann to Congress year and year after year?
- Clearly, there is a malignancy in the Minnesota body politic, in this area that elects Michelle Bachmann.
- Bachmann represents 1 district in Minnesota that is heavily republican. This is the evangelical hotbed for minnesota. We like to keep our crazies located in one place for easy reference.
Even tho the republicans heavily outweigh the democrats she came very close to losing this year. Obviously not close enough, but hey we keep trying
- R2 summed it up well. Minnesota is a blue state with an extremely angry red zit.
- Stupid, crazy people need representation too.
- Sometimes these crazy Congressmen are smart enough to hire good staff. Not to research issues, or do good work in the Congress, but to do good work as far as constituent services are concerned.
If they show up at ribbon cuttings or as guest speakers at Senior Centers in their District, if they help people with problems even if the problems are with local or county gov't, or sponsoring outings for children, picnics, immunization fairs, etc.
It's called Pothole politics. They keep getting reelected because they are familiar.
- R3 is correct.
- Wisconsin is much stranger. How can the same state elect Scott Walker (union hating Evangelical zealot), recall him, elect him again, and then elect Tammy Baldwin (first openly gay senator) the same year?
- R5, she is not good at pothole politics.
- The Democrats need to get down and dirty. TV ads that keep rerunning the stupid things she says. The Dems can bring in big names, spend lots of money, but they don't know how to wage a campaign to get rid of the bitch.
- Put some creme on that angry zit.
- It's just one district and contains enough wingnuts who combine with uninformed types to barely get her elected. Also, when it comes campaign time, her commercials try to portray her as reasonable. Nothing like the ads conservatives run in the South.
- To give us something to talk about.
- I also agree with r9. Dems need to know how to play rough. She's a right wing zealot and they need to attack her for it more during the campaign.
- R7 -- Walker was not "recalled and re-elected"! They tried to recall him, which failed. Period.

- Walker would have been sogged and tiddled if the vote were held on a general election date.
- Bachmann wins by less each election. It still doesn't help.
