Not all, but if you get into the right specialized field, you can be part of the cutting edge of technology.
The mapping and camera drones in use today were being tested on Navy ships in the mid-80s. By the time of the 1st Gulf War, a battalion of Iraqi soldiers surrendered to a drone. GPS devices were first developed for the military. In 1986, a Navy ship was sent around the world to test TV satellite footprints, that are part of everyday life today, bringing worldwide TV into our homes. Digital photography was used to send frontline pictures from battlefields to the Pentagon - a big change from transmissions that took much longer times. This was before digital cameras were abailable to the general public.
If you get in specialized technical rates in the military, you can get continuous training and preparation for recession proof jobs.
