Are you scared of curses?

I read the novel the Alchemist. In the novel, I can't remember who says it, but a character says: never say that you don't deserve something because fortune might be listening and give you less the next time. Yesterday, I said to a friend that I didn't deserve something. I'm scared that I'm cursed now.
