Ashley Judd and Dario Franchitti are splitting after more than a decade of marriage. "We have mutually decided to end our marriage. • I'm a Kentuckian and I can tell you that Ashley Judd is NOT popular with many constituents because of her negative comments towards the coal industry. She doesn't have a snow ball's chance of beating McConnell. I've met and spoken with him, and hate the bastard, but I think I hate her more. She's a shitty actress and if I have to hear that false quote of hers about Kentucky girls and sweet tea and guns and UK basketball again I think I'll puke. I'm a proud democrat and even I don't want her to represent my state. I don't recall us having a democratic senator in my lifetime, anyway (though it's possible... I'm too lazy to google). Here and there they may show their enlightened side, but on many issues, they're quiet conservative. Coal is dying industry. It's killing out earth. • I'm honestly more concerned about the children of Appalachia and the ridiculously high level of poverty that many of them face each and every day than I am in listening you preach to me about how I'm a bad democrat because I support the only industry that my region has in which to sustain itself. Before my daddy retired, he earned a good living in the mines, and we certainly didn't, ya know, have the money that an oil digging family would, but we never wanted for anything either. My sister and I are both college educated, but not everybody here gets that option. In fact, unless you've been to Appalachia and seen the squalor and poverty that many people still live in 50 years after LBJ declared the war on poverty here. I don't think you have any business condemning an industry (or its supporters) that keeps much of a region afloat.

• Actually, I'd compare my state environmentally with any other. We certainly don't have the smog of California. Most of Kentucky's mines are deep mines and the least environmentally intrusive. There is some mountain top removal (aka strip mining... which I do NOT approve of), but for the most part, the mines we have here are NOT the environmentally destructive monsters that you're trying to paint them as. Besides, coal keeps the lights on... and I'd venture to guess that your electricity comes from coal (though I could be wrong and you could have wind or hydro powered electricity but I'm betting you don't). So, since you hate coal and it's SO horrible for the environment, why don't you go turn all the breakers off in your house and see how you like it without your computer to hide behind?

• You and Ashley Judd have a lot in common. Both forward thinking people from a state that is so rigidly conservative. Both share a deep love for their home state. The difference is that Ashley has been exposed to life outside of Kentucky. Ashley, if she really wanted to, could have run for office in Los Angeles. Instead, she chose Kentucky. She sticks out like a sore thumb, but her heart is always close to it. Johnny Depp and George Clooney are both from Kentucky but you never hear them talk about the Blue Grass State. As if they sprung from nowhere. They are now Hollywood royalty and that elite class of actors could never admit to being from Indiana or Kentucky. She's trying to better Kentucky. You may disagree with her views on coal, but there's no doubt her heart is in the right place. Her views are, too.

• To be entirely fair to Clooney I have seen him mention Kentucky a couple times in some interviews. One example, which might be an insult depending on how you look at it, happened during one of those actor round table things they do for some award shows. Christopher Plummer was there and he asked Charlize Theron why she didn't speak with an Afrikkans accent. She told him that the community that she lived in was very rural and there was barely any English spoken. So she learned English when she came to America at around 19 and there was no accent to break. Clooney jumps in to say that he was from Kentucky and they also learned English at around 19. So maybe a little shame there but he seemed good-natured about it. He actually mentioned being from Kentuvky a few times in the full interview.

• Well, he had to because his father was running for office. Even with George campaigning with his father, Senior still lost. I guess Kentucky does care much for Hollywood.

• George and Johnny haven't distanced themselves from Kentucky at all. I know people who know both. They still have family who live in their respective hometowns and still visit. When they do they manage to keep it as low key as possible. It is possible to fly under the radar if you want.

• Hey R36, I live on the West Coast too and coal is about to become a large environmental controversy here. While we're burning less coal today, there are currently about five proposals for trains that will transport coal westward from where it is mined to the coast so it can be shipped to China for fuel.

• I'm from a small town in western Kentucky and coal is everything! There are huge blackened and dead areas where the coal industry has killed everything and at the edge of town there's a huge lake of still black water with nothing but the stumps of long dead trees breaking it's surface. It's both sad and creepy!

R34, Kentucky is ranked 18th in pollution (California is 24th). If you really live in Kentucky (particularly eastern KY), you should already know about the water pollution brought on by MTR and other mining practices. It's a fucking mess. The water is becoming increasingly polluted and undrinkable. A couple of months ago, our idiot Senator Rand Paul got called out on his bullshit for criticizing Judd's position on coal. He claimed coal was the state's top industry - it isn't. It's actually 13th. Coal has provided jobs for years, and continues to do so, but there are other alternatives that would provide safer and cleaner energy. They would also provide jobs. Time to pull your head out of the coal and realize the coal industry isn't on your side. And btw, you must be really young if you can't remember KY's last Democratic senator. Wendell Ford is a legendary politician from this state who served for 25 years and retired in 1999.

• Story I read about here on DL worth repeating. Apparently, it made the NY Post but had to be cleaned up for publication. I can't remember the film, but for some reason Ashley grew to hate the screen writer, a 50 something woman. During downtime, she typed something like "Linda has a dry vagina and spends her evenings rearranging her spice rack." on a computer on set. Apparently, she didn't know that it was on a network that displayed entries on all of the other screens on set. So everyone read it and talked about it. Ironic now that Ashley's heading toward the menopausal cliff herself.
